As I look back on 2018, I realized that I personally have walked some dark roads this year. I've battled low-level depression and freaked out about the future. As a family, we've faced some challenges and uncovered some hardships along the way, and there are a lot of things that feel out of our control.
But, in the nature of my personality, it took a bit of soul searching to remember that stuff. I look back and mostly remember the good stuff and the highlights. Certainly, there are pros and cons to the rose-colored glasses that I often live in, but honestly, it is nice to have to look hard to remember the hard. (Also, that is indicative that the hard didn't take all the way over this year, and for that I am grateful. I have had years like that, and this wasn't one of those.)
This year I dove all the way into the Enneagram and still talk about it daily with friends, family and John. It has been immensely helpful to understand the ways that I approach life and how that often differs vastly from those around me. Apparently not everyone views life as one party after another?!? But in all seriousness, it has given John and I a new framework to see our strengths and weaknesses, and we look forward to learning more. (I'm a 7w8, and John's a 2w1 for those in the know.)
In January, Lily turned nine on the 9th, and we celebrated with a Golden Party.
We had a theme during the year of getting more help, and that happened in a lot of ways that have been invaluable for our family. As it turns out, we still need a lot of help to make this merry-go-round of our life spin.
In February, we went to Disney World for the first time as a family of six. Since I am *slighty* Disney obsessed, this was a dream come true, and we had a mostly great trip with plenty of Highs and Lows.
{Part 1} {Part 2} {Part 3}
For Spring Break, we got to see some dear friends who live in Southeast Asia and visit Dallas and Great Wolf Lodge with them - such an amazing treat!
In April, Violet and William turned five, and we celebrated at our favorite ice cream shop that has plenty of dairy free options.
I had the opportunity to teach cookies at Camp Create which was a magical dream come true!
I hosted a Royal Wedding watch party and required everyone to wear their wedding dresses. Since mine didn't *exactly* fit, John tried to zip tie me in and cut his hand badly in the process spraying blood all over our bathroom, but miraculously, not the dress. What a life!
We visited Texas a second time in late May with our college besties and got to hit up Magnolia and spend time on the Ranch - all in all, it was a great trip! (except for all of the snakes that we saw...)
Our in-town friends are one of our favorite things in life, and we managed to get almost every last one of us to the lake for a day in June!
John and I planned a very last minute trip to Chicago where we got to see the Dodgers play the Cubs and see Hamilton all in one day. That whole day was surreal and incredible all the way through, and we enjoyed being tourists the next day before heading back to reality.
The twins graduated preschool in June, which was beyond precious.
We took a gorgeous road trip to North Carolina in the late summer to see John's sister and family. We enjoyed the beach, visiting Bald Head Island and playing around the area.
While on that trip, we got completely rained on during a family photo session. Probably a good metaphor for our life.
The kiddos all started at the SAME school in August, which has been a mother's dream come true. They are having good years, and I am so thankful for each teacher they have!
In September, I went on a beach trip with the girls from our D-group and had a lovely time. It would be impossible not to with these treasured friends.
Also in September (!!!), John and I went to Napa Valley with good friends. It was one of the more beautiful and tasty trips that I've ever been on.
{Hot Air Balloon & More} {Tastings ...} {Bonus San Fran Day}
In October, Bella turned eight, and we celebrated with an Amazing Race party, which was really one of the most fun parties I've ever planned!
For Halloween, we dressed as the Spenst Seasons.
We've spent the last part of our year having our kitchen remodeled - which I plan to photograph and share next week when the kids are back in school. I LOVE IT!!!
We rounded out the holiday season with all kinds of fun and cherished moments.
Even as I write out all that we have done this year, it looks pretty great. But, believe me, there is a LOT of mess in between everything. Go back to the first paragraph of this post if you need a reminder. What I am continuing to learn is that it all happens together for most of us. There is abundance and hardship all wound together at almost every juncture. There is rain on the beach. Every one of these trips and highlights included lowlights because we are all people and things happen.
But - we end 2018 knowing that God is faithful in it all. He is working in and through us and refining us, even when we don't like it.

DECEMBER HIGHS & LOWS
Sometimes I wonder why we stuff so much into one little month on the calendar. December is always so incredibly full. Here are a few of our highlights!
High: We were invited to not one, but TWO weddings. Which is wild, because we are not exactly in the wedding season of our lives. But, they were both beautiful, and it was such a joy to celebrate with dear couples. Also, as I sat in the ceremonies, I was reminded of the beautiful covenant that marriage is.
High: We got to celebrate our friend, Frank Scott Jr., becoming the first African-American elected mayor in our city - his watch party was electric!
Low: I got asked when Christmas was about 40 billion times by one twin in particular. No matter what I told him, he asked again. Sometimes in the same minute.
High: I got to attend a "Favorite Things" party with some of my very favorite adoptive/foster mamas.
High: Driving to Siloam Springs to surprise my mom for her birthday was such a delight! She was so surprised, and we both cried.
Low: Why can't we live right next door to all of the people we love? Is that too much to ask?
High: Celebrating Christmas with our D-group was a highlight, because these are the people we do life with, and I'm so thankful. It doesn't hurt that we have an absolute blast together. The day after the adult party, we took the kiddos all caroling at a nursing home. That definitely had highs and lows, but ultimately, it was a real joyful thing. When I really concentrate on the words of Christmas carols, I always cry, so I had to just pretend that I was singing nonsense to get through it.
Low: Somehow, we've managed to be on the scene of a lot of car accidents this month. Thankfully, no one was hurt in any of them, but it has made for some added chaos. One of them was a friend who was rear-ended while myself and another friend were in a line of cars behind her. We had 13 kids between us on the side of a frontage road. Again, I'm so thankful that no one was seriously hurt, but I would appreciate a break from car accidents.
High: We have season tickets to the Little Rock Broadway shows with two other couples, and we've loved having scheduled date nights with great friends. Finding Neverland was really great!
Low: We left the show Love Never Dies at intermission, because it was that bad. Also, John missed out on Finding Neverland, because he had a migraine so painful that he Ubered home from dinner. After taking pictures in front of the beautiful tree at the Capital Hotel, of course. He loves me.
High: We hit $6 Million dollars at our restaurant for the first time just a few days ago, which was a huge milestone for us! We are so thankful for our team and guests that made this possible.

All in all, the highs outweigh the lows, which I am very grateful for. I CANNOT believe that December and 2018 are coming to a close!
THREE CHRISTMASES
The last few years have brought changes to the way we celebrate the holidays, because now we have family in town. Not just one family, but two! So, though we spent all of actual Christmas in Wichita with my family, we also managed to celebrate Christmas with John's family and our adoptive family all within a couple of weeks.
A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated with John's parents here in town. We had dinner, exchanged presents, sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and took them to see the Inflatable House in N. Little Rock that is always a favorite.
(Lily has decided to largely boycott smiling in photos she doesn't deem necessary)
We set off on a road trip to Wichita with trepidation, but we had remarkably smooth and pleasant travel both ways, which was mind-boggling to us. It was amazing to arrive at a destination and not feel like we were ready to claw our eyes out.
We kept the trip to Wichita fairly short, because it is a LOT of children and stimulus, and sometimes, shorter can be sweeter. On our first night there, we had sitters for all the kiddos and had a delightful dinner out with adults only.
We had planned our time well before-hand which helped things run smoothly while we were there. Christmas Eve brought the trampoline park, lunch at CFA (obviously) and the Christmas Eve service at church before dinner. We also put Lily in charge of getting the kids to act out the nativity with mixed and hilariously chaotic results.
(Twinning is winning)
Christmas day was full of cinnamon rolls, a "Christmas Arena" for stocking and present opening, a neighborhood walk, seeing Mary Poppins with a party of 18 and playing games. I'm so thankful for family that is genuinely fun to be with, even when it feels a bit wild.
(Ellen made this quilt for Mom. Violet wants to be in every picture.)
(She had just pantomimed Barbara Bush in a way that we were actually able to guess it, which seemed pretty masterful.)
Our final Christmas gathering came two days after Christmas with the twins' birth siblings and family. I never get over how creative God was/is as this story continues to be written. We had a potluck dinner at Gran Gran's, and she had a gift for every last one of us, which is no small feat! It was another wild time, but it is an unforgettable treasure to be together.
Recovering from Christmas feels like a full-time job that we are not quite up to, and we are trapped in that bizarre time between Christmas and New Year's when nothing makes sense. But, we are thankful for the gift of Jesus coming down, and all of the precious people we get to celebrate with.
