Big Kid Cafeteria
Vika got to eat her breakfast in the cafeteria this morning for the first time. She did really well and sat right down at the place her teacher indicated for her. She waved bye to me. I snapped a photo of the occasion. Only after I got to work and downloaded the photos at lunch did I realize that she has a dark red juice in an open cup. An open cup. Maybe we need to work on drinking from open cups, eh? The cute new outfit may be toast. Josh's room goes to breakfast a bit later than Vika's class so I didn't get a photo of him there this morning, but here's one from a few weeks ago. I love that they serve breakfast - or as we say - second breakfast. : )

First Day of School
The kids started their first day of the school year today. They are both in new classes and spent part of last week visiting with their new teachers and their new classrooms. Josh is very excited to have a teacher he's known since he was 1 year old. She actually transferred from his old school. Yay. Vika mostly goes with the flow, but I'm excited. Her new teacher seems to be very calm and competent - very important qualities for the 2 year old room. She insisted on taking her books to school. Of course, Pinncchio has no photos so she also took her personal photo album. Go figure. I, of course, subscribe to the philosophy that you choose your battles. That's not one of them.

Visit With Granny
We were very pleased to have Granny visit this month. She got a chance to see how Vika has grown, and to reconnect with Josh. She had to have had a huge sense of deja vu when she ended up trying to teach Vika how to ride the tricycle. It wasn't so long ago that she did the same for Josh (check out the post from 10/30/06). Granny got her to put her right foot on the pedal, then her left, but when the bike started moving Vika was done. All we heard was no, no, noooooo. Apologies for the poor lighting. We were so busy playing that I didn't take many photos.

Vika's Birthday
Curt and I got her a toddler MP3 player. This girl lives for music. She'll dance at the slightest provocation. I think she'll really like her music player but for the time being the book is winning the best present award.
The idea of cake was amazing for her. Actually eating it was another story. She wanted no part of it. Consequently Josh got to lick the icing from the candle.

Vika is 2!
Vika enjoyed a great birthday. She opened her presents like a champ (even if she did get a huge dose of unneeded help from her brother). Nonetheless, she was gracious about the help. She opened a book of words from Auntie that she loved. Other presents were rejected until she had read the entire book.
Nature Center
This weekend we checked out our local nature center. They had a biologist at the creek there to share nets and containers with the kids and to help them catch frogs, fish, salamanders, etc. Vika loved it and immediately walked into the water and sat down to explore. Josh took a bit of convincing. He declared nature beautiful but dirty. He eventually got into the spirit of the trip though and had a nice time.
