LUCAS PLEDGES HALF HIS WEALTH TO CHARITY

Via blastr.com:

All that money we spent on Star Wars action figures? We just learned it's going to a good cause. Because Bill Gates and Warren Buffett—who've got a combined net worth of $90 billion—figured they could change the world by convincing the wealthiest people in the U.S. to donate most of their fortunes to charity. And one of those 38 other billionaires who said "Sign me up!" ... was George Lucas.

Lucas—along with Barry Diller, Ted Turner and others—signed The Giving Pledge, which is "an effort to invite the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to the philanthropic causes and charitable organizations of their choice either during their lifetime or after their death."

In an open letter, Lucas wrote:

As long as I have the resources at my disposal, I will seek to raise the bar for future generations of students of all ages.

I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future - and the first step begins with the social, emotional, and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt - as educators, storytellers, and communicators our responsibility is to continue to do so.

(Check out the full text of his letter here.)

Does this mean I can now write off HALF of all my Star Wars crap purchased over the years?!!!

PRECIOUS SMILES: GOLLUM & LOKI

I was flipping through the latest Marvel Previews last night and when I came across the solicit for LOKI #1, I thought "Ha, he has the same crazy-happy smile as Gollum!" And so, I share.

TOM MANKIEWICZ PASSED AWAY

Tom Mankiewicz passed away last week at the age of 68. He was the Screen Writer for SUPERMAN I & II, a few 70s JAMES BOND flicks and LADYHAWKE!

Superman director Richard Donner said, “Making ‘Superman’ was only possible because when Tom came in, he brought his sense of humor and brought those characters to life. A lot of people in this town have ‘the gift of gab.’ Tom’s was unique; there was always a true emotional center.”

Rest in peace.
Thank you for the influential works!

KIRBY GENESIS BY ALEX ROSS

"Mine eyes!!!!"

ALEX ROSS is teaming up with his "MARVELS" partner Kurt Busiek to do another grand comic series. This go-round is diving into one of JACK KIRBY'S Universes to further explore and expand. Dynamite Entertainment will publish "KIRBY: GENESIS" starring such Kirby Characters as the Ninth Men, Galaxy Green, Tiger 21 and Silver Star.

While its always a pleasure to have new Ross comics, I'm somehow not stoked about this project. Maybe its because Kirby's STYLE is so distinct (and awesome!) and very different from Ross'. I'm also not a fan of Busiek's writing.... at all (ok, "Astro City" is good).

Splashing KIRBY'S NAME IN GIANT LETTERS to sell it isn't enough to win me over since its his ART that attracts me (and obviously he won't be handling the art). I'd be more excited if say MIGNOLA, WALT SIMONSON and/or LADRONN were on this project, as their styles are more inline with Kirbyvision.

But I will check issue one out whenever it hits the shelves; Alex Ross is a top-notch storyteller and his stuff sure can be pretty... mixed with Kirby's imagination... could be fantastic (if only it was Krueger writing, not Busiek). We shall see.

Recommended Alex Ross (story and/or art):
Marvels
Kingdom Come (my favorite!)
Earth X
The World's Greatest Super-Heroes
Justice

DC UNIVERSE TRAILER WILL AROUSE YOU, BUT IT'S OK

Click HERE to watch it BIG!

THIS is what Comic Book Movies should look like. I'm done with the watered-down live-action attempts. From now on, I want THESE GUYS involved in making purely animated movies that blow your socks off. This trailer alone is better than all the live-action Comic movies combined. These guys GET IT.
