Shrove Tuesday

February has never been my favorite month, it's slushy and cold, and full of hearts and stuff. But not this year.  Utah was cheated out of winter this year.  My friend and  Carrie and I have been learning about Shrove Tuesday and all of the traditional ways to celebrate around the world.  We decided to have a joint birthday party on Shrove Tuesday and enjoy a lot of pancakes.

One tradition we found and love is from a small town in England that started in the late 1400's.  The women would walk to the Church to start Lent and on the way they would toss pancakes from their cast-iron skillets.  I found cool old pictures online as this town has continued this tradition to this day.  We decided to go ahead and try tossing some pancakes as well.  I made The Bountiful Kitchens Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Sour Cream Pancakes, as well as a box of Chocolate Peppermint pancake mix.

on life lately...

some notes and pics about life lately.

I am certainly a paper crafter but not much of an artist so I am working on Art to the 5th Academy's Documented Life Project.  I have even kept up on it so far this year.  Every Saturday I  receive a new art/quote prompt and it has been fun to work on Sunday evenings.  I decided that I rather have something I can add to my scrapbook so I am using 6x6 pages rather than an art journal or planner.

January's theme was "A blank page and how to face it" with prompts about being your own goalkeeper, the beginning is always today, saying things with colors and shapes, words with friends, and what lies beneath.  February involves a love of layers and this weeks prompt was about when not to stop.

_____________

I have been cooking a lot lately.  I have made baked tacos, multiple types of guacamole, molten chocolate bread pudding, farmers breakfast casserole, Dr. Pepper pulled pork, smashed potatoes, and pancakes shaped like Star Wars spaceships.
_____________

I'm finally watching Breaking Bad.  Don't worry about spoilers, I followed it while it was actually on so I know the gist.  It has been an interesting watch.

______________

Oh and I am finally watching Friends for the first time.  Yeah, you read that right.
______________

Booked a trip to California for my birthday to visit Susie and Co. plus Toni. Oh an to spend my birthday in Disneyland.
______________

Pippin has been up to no good.  I love him so much (just be glad this isn't a picture of the worms, bees, or mice he has been dragging around.

______________

Once upon a time, Tom Felton designed a shirt for charity and I bought it.  I was hoping it would be here in time for FanX so he could autograph it, but it finally came and I love it anyway.

______________

Um Utah, I personally love winter, so while I have enjoyed the 70 degree weather this past week, please don't heat up so fast!?!

FanX 2015: Day 3

Fan X was once again a lot of fun. The last day is always interesting because you head into it exhausted, dehydrated, and wanting to see and do everything you can.  I had prepaid for a couple of autographs so I knew I would mostly end up doing a lot of waiting in line.  I got lucky though and had great family and friends who helped me wait, saved me spots, and saved me time so I was able to see and do almost everything I wanted to.

I started the day out getting their early to see Tom Felton and catch his autograph.  He is seriously the nicest guy and my sister Laura wanted me to ask him if he would be willing to every do a singing movie role.  He said it might take some training up but he would definitely be interested if he thought it was a great role.  He called me Lovely and told Becca, "thanks my love" and we both agreed to never wash our hands again. Okay not really never again but he certainly enjoyed the moment.

While waiting in line to get onto the floor I met some interesting characters and saw some cool cosplays.  Male-Slave-Leia was especially funny and this dude had no fear or regrets.  I had to snap a picture with him.

My first panel of the day was a last-minute short interview with Carrie Fisher a.k.a. Princess Leia of Star Wars. Because of Star Wars episode 7 she wasn't able to initially do any panels, but I am glad they figured out a way she could, even if it was short.  Her back had also been bothering her so I am so impressed with how gracious and accommodating she is of her fans to keep going with a smile on her face.  Annicka and I were able to grab her autograph and get glittered by her.  She is so random, quirky, and awesome!!  Some interview highlights:

-She wanted a coke before she started and some guy from the audience ran up with one and she kissed him.  She said, "you bring me what I want and I'll give you what you want."
-She sang and danced a bit.
-Her dear dog goes with her just about everywhere.
-Her only teaser for Episode 7 was that they filmed it in England and Harrison hurt his leg. Also during filming they had to be under tents because of drones trying to fly over set.
-She said that she is a fan of no sense.
-She liked the role of Princess Leia because she likes being bossy and uncooperative.
-She knew Star Wars was going to be a big deal.
-She helped George Lucas write other things, like the scene in Young Indiana Jones where he loses his virginity, and some stuff for Hook.
-She has been glitter bombing her fans because she brought a force field of glitter and everyone needs glitter in their lives...it's the law.

Lena Heady and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau play the Lannister siblings on Game of Thrones.  I have actually never seen it but I wanted to see them as I like other roles they are in (Lena in the Mortal Instruments and Nikolaj in the Other Woman).

-They talked about how Game of Thrones has become this animal and they never anticipated it would be like this.
-Neither had/have read the books, but Lena's mom loves them.
-Lena talked about how it was an opportunity of a lifetime to be a part of something so big and so loved and still be alive in it.
-Nikolaj talked about how being famous shouldn't change you as a person, acting is still just a job.
-Lena discussed how she believe her character Cersei as a girl who always wanted to be her brother Jamie but really has become a mirror opposite.  She wishes that Cersei could swing a blade a bit more often.
-They both acknowledged that as a women in that time period, if you weren't ruthless you were dead when talking about why Cersei is such a ruthless character.
-Lena said she checks each episodes script to see if she dies first and then just learns her scenes so the rest of the episode can be a surprise when she watches it on TV with her family.
-They gave up long ago trying to second guess George RR Martin's brain.

Next I stopped into the Vampire Diaries panel featuring Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin for Toni.

-When asked about Vampire Diaries vs. Twilight Paul said he had never seen or read them and Phoebe defended Twilight a bit saying the major difference was the lack of glittering for the Vampires and that Vampire Diaries was darker overall (you could tell she likes Twilight and didn't want to bash it like the fans asking the questions wanted them to).
-Paul loves Utah and lived her for 8 months while filming Everwood one year.
-Paul likes directing more than acting and directed the episode that was on TV a couple of weeks ago.  They said Ian is currently directing an episode and we should pray for them all.
-If Paul could pick how Stefan would be killed off it would be to have Stefan remove his ring, walk out into the daylight, and kill himself off.
-The guy who plays Alaric is from Salt Lake City.
-Paul's favorite scenes are when he plays the Ripper in the 1920's and the first time Elena recognizes he is a vampire.
-Caroline and Stefan will be getting hot and heavy very soon.
-When asked to give his best Vampire smolder, he said he rather give Ian's sexy face.  It was pretty funny.

Disabilities in Pop Culture was a panel I stopped in that featured Richard Paul Evans, Josh Trewles, and RJ Mitte from Breaking Bad.

-They discussed their first exposure to someone who was disabled in pop culture (i.e. Bionic woman, Hawkeye-deaf, Daredevil-blind, Corky from Life Goes On) and the impact that had on them.
-They talked about how many shows are on today that feature characters with a disability and how many use people with a disability to portray characters.
-They especially appreciated Glee and the Michael Vey book series, which made me happy, and talked about how it is empowering to the disabled and Mental Health communities.
-Comic Con is inclusive of everybody and anyone can fit in somehow.
-Big media isn't immoral it is amoral.
-Spider-man is the first imperfect hero, one who was filled with self doubt.  Only now in the movies do they demonstrate that in other hero's like Superman.
-To make changes, start with yourself and change your mindset, then change your kids mind.
-On Breaking Bad, Walter White Jr.'s disability of Cerebral Palsy is only actually mentioned once.

Another panel I attended was a Marvel Phase 3 panel that discussed the upcoming movies through 2018.  I am excited for these movies but also sad as there is a high possibility some of our favorite heroes will be killed or changed forever.

After walking the floor some more and meeting up with my family we ended the day watching some of the cosplay contest and with the annual Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog Sing-a-long.  Overall a fun Fan X.
