Heads up

The first novel I've read this holiday is Red Dust by Fleur Mcdonald. I finished that a few days ago. Shall be blogging about it soon :)
Have a great day!

New Directions :)

Did I say I was going to blog more? Well I sure didn't forget that! Here I am, the day after my end-of-semester 1 exams ready to resuscitate my blog :)
After so many years of just spilling my guts out about whatever's on my mind - usually the lousy days, and a few good ones - I've decided to put some direction into it. It's like turning a winding, dwindling jazz piece into a Bach masterpiece. Ok, I don't know so much about the 'masterpiece part' but J.S. Bach, take that as a compliment man.
Here's what I'm gonna do: I'll be blogging about books and music! That's any book I've read and any music I've listened to.

I thought this would be a great idea since my brother asked me to embark on the journey of reading his IB English texts to help him. My usual reading repertoire consists of trashy teen novels picked up from the YA section of the local library, and classics or 'real literature' obtained from elsewhere *snicker*. My loves of modern, 21st century novels are really all over the place - I don't really read all the books ever published by just a few authors, so that would make it really difficult to name all the novels I've ever liked. Of course, that was with the exception of the Harry Potter series. J.K Rowling *tries to do cartwheel* I also am a sucker for Haruki Murakami novels (under the influence of the IB program). As a kid, I liked Roald Dahl (still love him)…and er, I can't think of any other off the top of my mind now. I really just read any random book I get my hands on. And if it turns out to be junk, then I either flip through it just to find out how the story ends, or chuck it immediately.
As for the classics, Jane Austen has got to be my favourite, Edgar Allen Poe too. Hmm..I'm pretty ok with the others as long as they don't incorporate crazy characters (Poe's are fine, except for The Black Cat). Seriously. *waves hello to Shakespeare's MacBeth, Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre, and Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea* You don't know how much these texts have haunted me. That's including the time I had trouble washing my hands without thinking of…ok enough of that.

As for music, I have a classical background, and most other times I listen to pop/'sounds-made-for-people-now'. Some classical composers I love are J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, F. Chopin, S. Rachmaninov, G. Gershwin, L.v. Beethoven, O. Puccini. I also like listening to Bobby McFerrin, Yo-yo Ma, Sarah Chang, Itzak Perlman, Evengy Kissin and Janos Starker. I also am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movie soundtracks - thank you Howard Shore and John Williams! You'd probably argue that this is quite a biased selection, as I play electone, piano and cello; I'm open to any suggestions.

As for pop music, Michael Jackson, Mika, The Glee Cast, Maroon 5 and John Mayer are my favourites. I also listen to Peter Cincotti, A Very Potter Musical, Disney songs, some Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera etc. My playlists are also quite limited because I may be quite a fussy listener. Oh, and I used to love Linkin Park in my early teens. I still don't mind listening to their older albums occasionally, but I'm not so crazy over their newer albums. Talking about Linkin Park, I also don't mind Fort Minor. I also listen to some Chinese music (a lot during that time I felt I had to get in touch with my roots), but not so much now. I really enjoy Khalil Fong and Wang Lee Hom.

Anyway, I can't wait to get some reading and blogging done through my 3 weeks of winter holidays and after that too! --End of spiel! Haha--

A Re-Introduction

Hello guys. I realised I haven't blogged anything for a long time now, most probably due to my love of Twitter. Being able to type tiny posts of 140 characters each has changed my life and made me less inclined to type much longer and more substantial posts. I also worked out that writing about my own measly life doesn't give me much of an audience on blogger as compared to Twitter, which I think is an incentive for me.

So I shall hereby re-introduce myself to the blogging community, so that you know who I am. (I might have changed a little during this time away from my blog, because people are dynamic creatures.)

I'm a second year university student studying dentistry. My life is mostly boring, except for the 2 month summer holiday back home in Singapore, which I enjoyed from December 2009 to February 2010, during which I took a diploma in professional make-up artistry and became a make-up artist. However, as I am a full-time student, I do not intent to plunge into the cosmetic industry. I also do not intend for this to be my job. I did this course purely out of interest (though it turned out to be quite stressful, and also partly because I give myself a lot of stress), and what I might do with the diploma and my newly developed skills is an entirely blog post altogether.

Back on topic, did I mention that I am a Singaporean living with my family in Brisbane, this supposedly sunny part of Australia that has been nothing but rainy these few months? I have a younger brother who's graduating from high school this year and doesn't know what he wants to do in university. I also have 8 adult budgies, 3 baby budgies and 2 quails as pets. (No, I am not a crazy budgie or bird woman! I promise. Most of the birds (except 1 adult budgie and 1 quail) were given to my family by our friends. I'm still in the process of developing my relationship with the birds. I did make an effort to learn all their names and have noticed some peculiar characteristics (like mysterious high-pitched squeaks from Mrs Budgie as she makes her husband kiss her), and I think that's a pretty good start for someone who hasn't had much experience with birds as pets. In fact, make that pets in general.

Ok, this is getting long-winded and out of hand. If you have any burning questions, fire away.
