Evensong

(excerpted from "An Alien at St Wilfred's", Adrian Plass)

Evensong, twilight tune
Sad goodbyes, see you soon
Every night seems so long
I want to hear your evensong.

Autumn days, ice-cream air
Summer's gone, a failed prayer
Lines of grey in auburn hair
Faded pictures, leave them there.

Seaside town, winter's day
Empty streets, cold and grey
Waves of comfort blown to spray
Who will hear me when I pray?

All my life, waiting for
Knowing you, being sure
Tiny glimpses through the door
Shining moments shine no more.

Evensong, twilight tune
Sad goodbyes, see you soon
Every night seems so long
I want to hear your evensong.

昙花一现

In my balcony here in Sydney, there lives a scraggy humble potted cactus-y plant - the very under-rated Epiphyllum oxypetalum (Bunga Bakawali, 昙花/曇花, Night Queen, निशागंधी Nishagandhi, 月下美人 Gekka Bijin), which is the eponymous flower in the chinese proverb 昙花一现, i.e. flash in a pan. This particular plant was left behind by previous tenants ages ago in a shabby state, but slow, tender loving care over the years helped it to recuperate and establish.

This plant supposedly only flowers once a year (or in my case, 3 times in the 6 years here), and when it does, the bud take 2 months to mature, and it is well known for blooming only in the wee midnight hours, opening swiftly over 4 hours, and then spectacularly wilting and dying by morning. No fruit is produced, to my knowledge, as it propagates by shoots: what an extravagant waste of the plant's resources over a year, gone in half a night, all for nothing except pleasure. Rare, fascinating and short enough for entire communities to gather at night to watch one bloom, and the subject of numerous chinese, japanese, indian and malay lore (more here).

Tonight, it bloomed again!

Massive flower spanning almost 9 inches wide and 4 inches deep, with long delicate fingers of red carmine petals radiating outward lily-like and elegant stamen and pistil drooping slightly in the centre, filling the air with a sweet, almost ethereal, scent. The edges of the red petals are lined with an intense purple hue made only visible under ultraviolet light (shows up as a strange shade of fuchsia in the photos, due to cold-white LED lighting). Usually 昙花 produces white, slightly pink flowers, but my plant makes em red!

Anyhoo, share my joy! =)

Dona Nobis Pacem

I need a top-up,
feel the wind back in the sails,
fire burning in the bones.
Save me from vapid and insipid mereness,
as if the point is to arrive safely at death.

Miserere nobis,
Dona nobis pacem.

Baba Yetu (Our Father...)

To all my friends the world over, whom I miss, I long for the one day when we will all gather, along with every tribe, every nation and tongue, and in doing so bow our hearts, raise our hands, to the One on the Throne, who is Worthy.

The Lord's Prayer (in Swahili)
Baba yetu, yetu uliye
Mbinguni yetu, yetu amina!
Baba yetu yetu uliye
Fu jina lako litukuzwe.
Utupe leo chakula chetu
Tunachohitaji utusamehe
Makosa yetu, hey!
Kama nasi tunavyowasamehe
Waliotukosea usitutie
Katika majaribu, lakini
Utuokoe, na yule, muovu e milele!

Ufalme wako ufike utakalo
Lifanyike duniani kama mbinguni. (Amina)

Our Father, who art
in Heaven. Amen!
Our Father,
Hallowed be thy name.
Give us this day our daily bread,
Forgive us of
our trespasses
As we forgive others
Who trespass against us
Lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from the evil one forever.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven. (Amen)

Slightly lost boy

(spoiler alert: Stream-of-consciousness monologue ahead)

Hallo friends, it's been a while.

A while it has been.

Have I been gobbled up by the busy-monster?

Perhaps. Drugged and engulfed.

There's been a bit of travelling lately - Adelaide for WOMAD, Hobart for a simple weekend, and again, the Coonawarra region and the south Victorian coast for a lovely drive with friends. Don't have that much photos to put up, but boy, were we stalked by rainbows!

Work is plodding along. Wishing it would get off the ground soon.

Visitor season ends, and I brace myself for the solitude of winter.

Hunker, bunker.

Academic Spam?

It is strangely fascinating, receiving academic spam.

On one hand, it's gratifying that somewhere out there in cyberspace, some industrial name-crunching web-trawler has somehow identified your academic activities and spit out your contact inviting you for abstracts and papers at an upcoming "prestigious conference", or to participate in some exclusive academic survey, or even just plain old "we-have-the-biggest-and-flashiest-most-expensive-machines-that-go-PING-so-you-need-to-get-one-too-for-your-cutting-edge-research" adverts. Most are phrased in an innocuous way to subtly stroke your ego about being the exclusive receipient of such unsolicited attention.

On the other hand, it's still spam that's made its way through the trusty ol'uni email filter: 99% is stuff not even related to my field or stuff I simply do not need. Surely their trawling algorithm needs a lot more refinement. Sure - the occasional cardiovascular, palliative care or mitochondrial membrane potential conference paper might look good on my physics/engineering CV.

Aside from a few [genuine] conferences, a large number of the conferences (strangely) seem to be held in Orlando, have tacky acronyms, contain template-generated wordings, and seem to be sent out of a server in Venezuela some 10-15 times a year, concerning some meta-topic about meta-research (research about research). Hrmm. Could it be some sort of a conference paper farm colluding to bolster academic CVs? or just a regular garden-variety scam preying on unsuspecting academics: collecting conference fees for a virtual conference? hehe.

Here's a healthy and fascinating sample crop of what I get... (edited of course):

Dona Nobis Pacem

A prayer for the terminally self-delusional...

Dear God,

grant me the courage to let go,
and the wisdom to do so,
when, or if, it is time,
otherwise,
the heart to carry on hoping.
But give me rest.

Amen.

Crash Helmets

Mark Batterson, In a pit with a lion on a snowy day, pp. 118.

"...There are basically two approaches to life: playing to win and playing not to lose... Too many of us are tentatively playing the game of life as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death."

At Changi (Again!), now back to Sydney

Here I am, again, at Changi. But now heading back to Sydney for the year. It has been a wholly fantastic 8 weeks away, in Singapore, Malaysia, China and Mongolia, and meeting a whole lotta friends and family. God's again mindblowingly amazing, and backlogged updates are due, soon!

Thanks to all whom I got to meet over coffee or meals or prata or other random midnight sessions. Thanks for accomodating and taking care of me, and sharing your lives. More to walk, and more to share, as certain, as He is faithful!

Be blessed, beloved, and fare thee well!

Updates soon!

At Changi, Again...

Hallo World. This is my first post of 2011. Its a new season, and the bookmarks are firmly set for this chapter. The dynamics feel different already.

Now at Changi, on my way to Beijing, and thereafter, Ulaan Bataar and surrounds for 3 weeks. Frosty frosty. Lets see where things lead! Thank God for a fantastic 3 weeks home already, and for warm friends and family, and fantastic fellowship, not to mention food and drink.

Here's another step on the water, coming up!
