My "excuse" for not blogging lately is that I lost my camera cord, but I found it (in my camera case) and have still not blogged. Oh well. I did want to try to play catch up, but first I thought I would share what I've been up to. I have been laying in bed, struggling to walk, and fighting pain for a week and 2 days. Here is how it started:
David and I were busy preparing for the start of the school year. He was finishing up on the last minute honey-dos. The last item was to get my maternity clothes down from the storage in the rafters of our garage. (the loft) He climbed the 10 ft ladder and was looking around, but could not find the clothes. I followed him up to help. I got to the top of the ladder (a lean-to ladder) and noticed that the ladder was barely over the threshold of the loft. As I put all my weight on the last wrung of the ladder, it collapsed. Since all my weight was on the ladder I fell too. I was fortunate to first land on my Honda Pilot, I landed flat on my back on the hood. I bounced off, flipped, and landed on my back on top of the ladder, that now rested on the concrete floor. My first thought was that I was alive, my second was that I didn't think I broke anything, my third (and probably the dumbest) was that I needed to walk it off.
I was in excruciating pain, but managed to hobble in the house and yell for Ethan to help his Dad (who was stuck in the loft and panicking) get down. I hurried and laid down in bed and tried to assess my injuries. All I knew was, I was hurt. I decided to call the chiropractor to see if he could fix me. It was a Sunday, but he agreed to meet us at his office. David called his brother Brandon and together they gave me a blessing.
David helped me get in the car and we drove (very painfully) to Lovell. My pelvis was jammed up on the right side. My right leg was significantly shorter than my left. My back was already swollen and bruising on the lower right side where I landed on the ladder. I don't remember ever being in that much pain.
I did go to the Doctor the day after the fall to get pain meds. They did X-ray to make sure I didn't break anything (I already knew I didn't). I bruised my kidneys, a concussion, and a very bruised back, hip, and pelvis. By Wednesday, I looked like I was 6 months pregnant from all the inflammation in my back moving across to the front. My right leg was two inches bigger around than my left and my waist was 4 inches bigger than usual. I looked very large...
I went to work the morning after the accident because it was my first day with students, and I couldn't stand to miss being there to great 16 very nervous and excited 4th graders. I have absolutely no idea how I made it through that day, but when I got home my Mom was there to help me. I took Tuesday off, and worked half days the rest of the week. My body has been healing (slowly but surely), but I have been struggling with dizziness and headaches. (My head did dent the hood of my car:( But each day has better than the previous. I drove for the first time on Sunday (one week after the accident). It felt good to be a little independent.
I know I am very lucky to have fallen 10 ft. to a concrete floor and not break any bones, or worse. I am very humbled when I think of what could have been, but am so thankful. I know I will heal, I am just learning to be patient.
I am so thankful to everyone that has helped me. My class has been wonderful, my coworkers, family, and many friends have stepped up. I am so sick of asking people to help with everything. I can't wait to be 100 percent again. Then maybe I can help them out.
