Preparing for October

Babies, babies, babies. I love having them crawl all over me (most of the time). I feel so blessed.
Unlike most moms (I'm assuming here), I do encourage the careful use of scissors at a young age. I think it's a great skill to have and the younger they learn, hopefully the younger they start using them in the right way! Eloise will sit at our craft table for a long time and cut a fringe along the edges of a piece of paper. I love it. Love that she's naked.
Still plugging along on our violin lessons! Making slow and steady progress. We've officially started that stage of forcing our children to practice instruments. It's just as awful as it always sounded.
Charlotte has done better in her lessons that I thought. She actually seems to have a better concentration span right now than Hazel! And on another note, she recently confiscated a pair of scissors and cut out a chunk of her hair along the side of her head. I also found out that she cut off some of the hair on our giant giraffe's neck and head in the baby's room. She's now grounded from scissors for a few days (but I secretly think it's cute and age-appropriate. She just curious!)
I pulled out our Halloween decorations this week! I LOVE Halloween and the onset of fall. In our craft/holiday basket, I had some Halloween face paints and let Hazel have a go at them. We walked into the kitchen looking like this! I think she did an amazing job for a five year old.

I found these lanterns for a dollar at DI and decided to use them above the dining room table. Kind of obnoxious, but I like it.

I thought it would be fun to put some of our Halloween lights (they look like candy corns) on the girls' bunk beds. It makes for a nice little glow in their room at night and makes bedtime stories and scriptures easier to read on Charlotte's bed where we all usually congregate.
This little one has been coloring non-stop lately. She will do this for 30 minutes or more.

From my journal on this day, Sept 26th: I have been loving my activity time with Eloise on Monday and Wednesday mornings while Charlotte is at Joy School. There really is something so special about her age. Today we went for a walk outside and counted ants on the sidewalk and touched bark on a huge tree.
I also found a great activity idea that worked really well for her! She had to drop the pom-poms in the smaller pumpkin into the paper towel holder so that they fell into the larger pumpkin.
She worked hard on this for quite some time. I love seeing her face in deep concentration.

(Journal entry for Sept 26th continued) Edison has been bouncing in his bouncing horse and it's so funny to see those little baby legs bounce him up and down with a huge smile on his face. I've been feeding him rice cereal here and there which he loves. He tries to grab the spoon and help me get it into his mouth as quickly as possible. Ellie is easy and wonderful. She is independent and entertains herself very easily throughout the day. I love how she comes over and backs into my lap when we sit down to read books. And she loes playing chase and peek-a-boo. Reminds me of how I loved doing that with Bradley when he was little. She's so fun to play with (she's sitting next to me on the couch as I write this and she just tooted).

September 27th: If you could understand how much I struggle with doing hair, you would know how proud I am of this hairstyle for Hazel.
Hazel decided she wanted to make her dad something special, so she scrambled this egg (mostly) on her own. She was very proud.

Charlotte and I were studying the letter W and made this witch hat!
And a tiny one for decoration too.

I found a book at the library that had Halloween crafts and Hazel tried this one on her own: a spooky house! It's not even October yet, but we are very ready around here.

Grandpa's 80th

September 23rd

On Sunday we celebrated what I thought was Grandpa Phipps' 81st birthday. Turns out it was his 80th! Oops.
I'm unabashedly proud of this cake. It is a vanilla cake made from scratch with a lemony cream cheese frosting. I can still taste it.
Here's Edison schmoozing the great-grandparents.

Papa Kevin has always sang "You are so beautiful" to the girls when they're little. With Edison, he switched to a song that goes "Great big globs of greasy grimy gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, roasted toasted birdie feet...." So funny.

Love those overalls.

Notice the belt and the necklace? She may not be the dress-up queen that she once was, but she still accessorizes.
Fate was on his side and Grandpa won the crochet tournament!
And he provided some nice music after dinner as well.

Happy 80th Grandpa. Here's to 81!

Ogden Octoberfest

Saturday, September 22nd. Hazel's first time scoring a soccer goal! She scored TWO.
And she got ice cream afterwards.

After Hazel's awesome goal-scoring game, we headed downtown for Ogden's Octoberfest. It was a BLAST. I'm so glad Gram came with us to enjoy all the booths with free games and crafts. What a great way to welcome fall.

I see a C, an H, and a super fancy A.
Eloise held onto this pumpkin the rest of the day, she was so proud of it!

The Nature Center usually brings some really amazing birds to these events.
Five going on sixteen. My goodness.

Welcome Fall!

End of September

We started "zones" with our girls! Hazel has bathrooms, Charlotte has stairs, and Eloise is responsible for putting shoes back in the shoe baskets and (sometimes) wiping down the walls.
BYU vs. Utah (we lost)

Handsome man in my arms.
My kids live a charmed life. Here's Lottie with her hair up in Gram's curlers getting tucked into bed with the "goodnight monster."
One of my favorite things in the late summer/fall: evening walks.
Typical scene at the home front.
And the kitchen. I took pictures of these two messy rooms to remind myself that we are BUILDING A FAMILY (and it's messy business).

Eloise with her little friend, Sophie.

Soccer practice on Wednesdays.
