Arte Y Pico Award

Well I was pleasantly surprised again today.....I was hopping along through the blogs I visit daily and there was Amy & My names on Neva's blog at Scrappin' Belle in a list of people she was giving this Arte Y Pico award to. It was a very nice surprise.

Here are the rules of the award:

I'm sorry there isn't a post for today....I did teach and had a BLAST in the grade 2 music class (ya gotta love when things evolve perfectly and everyone leaves singing and happy!), I did finish my taxes and the dear husband delivered them to the mail box, I did watch Model with Allison..who still isn't feeling that hot, and I hopped around blog land. However, in preparation for this weekends workshops I am stealing an idea from Laura, so I'll hope my husband lets me skip Choir tomorrow night to prepare....hmmmmmm

More Butterflies

Wow, it took a while to get a photo of this that showed the colours. This is today's colour challenge...Soft Sky, Purely Pomegranate and Basic Black. I've also used the "Try a New Technique Challenge" from yesterday which is the "Two Way Open Card". You can't tell that the "main" colour of the butterfly is Soft Sky because I used the blender pen. I may make this two-way-fold again with more vibrant colours because it's really quite easy to make.

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers....the band got back with no mishaps. They haven't heard yet of any standing they had...but it was more of a Festival than a Competition. Allison ended up missing a day of activities because she was sick...dehydrated! She'd gotten sick and was told to stay back at the hotel. She was pretty upset about it, but has gotten over it since. It meant she didn't get to do any shopping, which can be a good thing and a bad thing. She did however get pictures of the princesses she loves. Allison was especially glad to get to meet Belle again. The last time we were at Disneyland Allison had done a spring performance at school of Beauty and the Beast and she'd played Belle (10 years ago in grade 1)...so that princess is dear to her heart. She said she asked for a hug and got one. Lucky Girl.

Well, it's well past my bedtime, I have a lot to accomplish tomorrow but I'll try to get a post done....Taxes, (talk about deadlines!!!) dream up cards for the workshops on the weekend, watch America's Next Top Model with Allison, Teach....Yada, Yada, Yada.

Butterfly Happiness

Okay...I must be tired because I'm not very happy with how this turned out. It's a combination card...Sketch Challenge, Ways to Use It Challenge (Scissors) and for a big stretch the Inspiration Challenge which was A Safari Adventure...I went with butterflies in the jungle.
I created the three butterflies by colouring right on the stamp and then once it was put on paper I coloured in the extra spots that came out white. I've curved each of their wings a bit but the bodies are not raised off the paper.
I really need to practice with the distressing tool. I can begin with a perfect rectangular piece of paper and when I'm done, it's wonky. Oh well.

The 3 day music conference I was at was FANTASTIC. It was a conference put on by Carl Orff Canada...for any other music people out there.....I've come home with a binder full of ideas. We saw "Le Boucheron" Thursday night, Friday night was filled with 3 different concerts - The "Kokopelli Choir" made up of young people ages 14-24 (incredible sound), "Toe Jamm" - which is a group of 5 women who tap danced and were fantastic (being the former dancer that I am) and "Asani" which is a contemporary Aboriginal trio. All the groups originate from Edmonton. Saturday night we were entertained by the Japanese Drums of "Kita No Taiko" - WOW!!!! and the "St. Albert Community Jazz Band" WOW again!!!! Not to forget all the wonderful children's groups performing Orff pieces during our days. My brain is swimming with the songs and strategies I've learned.

Thank you for those who mentioned prayers and thoughts for the Ardrossan Band in Disneyland. Allison said that her flute solo went "good"....which probably means that it was FANTASTIC...since she's so hard on herself. She mentioned that black pants, white shirts and black vests are not the best "uniform" to have when performing in California....Sweltering. But she's having fun, and I pray for safe flying tomorrow.

It's sunny out...

What a great day! I spent some time in the basement (my stamping "studio") creating for our birthday card camp in May. I also did a sketch challenge for the first time so this is for SC173. I seem to have kept to the Soft Subtles today, I guess because they remind me of SPRING!




The card below is also the colour challenge, CC163, for this week (Certainly Celery, Pretty in Pink and Chocolate Chip). I added white to the card and of course a little bling with the dazzling diamonds.


I made a few cards with the Just Celebrate set from the Occasions mini and this was my favourite. I love the designer series paper and I really like Bashful Blue and Pretty in Pink, I hope they add them to the colour choices in 12x12.



I made a few more things but some of them are for the camp and I want Joan to have the first peek so I will save them until next week. I hope Joan is having fun at her music course. As for me, I am off to visit with my little nephews. Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

Gift Card Holder

Monday's technique challenge this week was to create one of these gift card holders. I used a 4 1/4" X 11" piece of Soft Sky folded it according to the directions and added the extras. I'm going to link you to the main Challenge page for this project, because in the introduction to this challenge there are a variety of different places where you can link up to instructions.

It's not very visible here, but the Graduate cap is done in paper tole with three layers, the rust star is lifted with a dimensional and the "Congratulations" is actually stamped on the base of the card with the hole cut out of the designer paper with the word window.

This is a cute idea, I like some of the bigger versions that I saw through the links. Also, don't forget to check out the Gift Card Gallery.

I'm going to be in Edmonton all weekend at a Music Workshop so you may not hear from me until Monday.....Sunday if I'm awake.

Amy's First Post - Yikes!

Hello! Wow, I am a little intimidated with the whole posting thing. Joan has been doing such a super job of our blog. Thanks Joan - you ROCK! I have some time this weekend and I have set it aside just for stamping. Yaaa! Tonight has been productive - I even managed to get all 418 pictures off my camera and onto the computer! I am posting a card I made for my Aunt's birthday. Please excuse the picture, I see now that it is not all that clear. My Aunt loves cats so I had to use this image from Pun Fun. I was trying my hand at watercolouring using the markers and an aqua painter. I was inspired by Stamp with Heather. I am also going to post a small bouquet of flowers I made for display at the trade show. I am using a lot of pumpkin pie these days - LOVE it! Thanks to everyone for all your comments on the blog, it is so fun to read them!

A Happy Stampin' Day...

I got a wonderful surprise in the mail when I got home.....this fabulous card made by Danielle Kennedy at Wild Dragonfly Designs. I had commented a while ago on a wonderfully cute frog image she used on one of her cards she had posted on her blog. She then offered to send me some stamped images and they arrived in the mail today along with this card. I honestly don't know which to exclaim with excitement about first....So.... First: I love this card, the colours are so funky and so are the flowers. It's a perfect spring card in a city whose snow has finally stopped after two days. It really brightened my day.

Second...If you know me, you'll know that I'm telling the truth when I say that I squealed with delight when I saw the frog images Danielle sent. ( I have yet to grow up despite my age, much to the embarassment of my daughter and probably some of my friends.) There are four different poses and they're all great. I'm afraid to use them 'cause I don't want to muss them up....but I will use them....just wait and see!!!!!


Allison had a snow day today so the dear girl did her laundry, cleaned her room, and started packing to go to Disneyland, Therefore, I was able to stamp this evening. (A Happy Mom is a Happy House). This card is the combination of today's colour challenge (Chocolate Chip, Pretty in Pink, and Certainly Celery, last weeks "Ways to Use It" challenge where you had to add something acrylic on your card, and it's sort of, kind of, Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge.

I stamped the square button using Staz-On Ink and I separated the words on the stamp by covering up each line I didn't want inked with tape.

Monday April 21

Okay, I know this is from last weeks challenge, and I've made one pocket card already, but I had wanted to try this idea out and thought it was something I could do it easily. I could give you all the details of the troubles I had, but I won't.....It just took a bit longer to come together than I thought. I do, however, think that it would make a good springtime Thank-You.....that is if spring ever decides to come to the Edmonton area. The scary thing is to think that we've already had it. I saw this blossom put on the end of the Wonderful Words on another blog.....reminiscent of the watercolour garden combination....and thought I would use it. (Sorry I can't remember which blog )

If it's snowing where you are....stay warm
If you have beautiful leaves and blossoms on your trees and your bulbs are coming up.....don't take them for granted!!!! Stop and smell them, roses or not!

Life's a Whirl Wind

I so desperately want to get into my stamping room (which is now a complete mess from after the Trade Fair).....but I'm not sure how much I'll get done right away. I have to help my daughter get ready for a trip to Disneyland Thursday. They fly out at 5:00 Thursday morning from Edmonton's Airport.....they have to be there by 4:00am - yikes!!!! They're competing in a Canadian Band Competition while there - Exciting!!!! I also have to get myself ready for a music workshop for all next weekend. However, I am going to try my dardest to get something stamped and on the blog. I've been missing doing the challenges.

On the Fly Again....

Got up early this morning for some unknown reason except that I wanted to stamp something since I hadn't for a while. I thought I could probably throw something together before Amy picked me up for the Trade Fair at 9:30. I went to the computer and printed off the "instructions" for all the challenges this week, and thought I could do the colour and sketch challenge....that was all fine and dandy until I realized that my Groovy Guava ink was over at the Trade Fair. Oh well....I may end up repeating this challenge.

We're done at 6:00 tonight so I'm hoping to stamp somemore....unless I fall into bed like I did last night.

On the Fly

Just a very fast posting....I made this card a while ago for a workshop, but I thought I'd it would be a good one to showcase soon because of the upcoming chipboard sale. I took one of the outer circle rings and after inking it with craft ink I cut it in half.

It may be a bit quiet here since Amy and I are working the Fort Trade Fair this weekend. Hope our friends will drop by.

News.....

Just a quick morning post to let you know that from now on you'll be hearing from both Amy and Joan. We became a bit more technologically literate, and I was able to add Amy as a writer. That's going to make things fun!!!! Now too, when Amy makes a comment on any of your blogs she's connected back here.
The down side....is that our signature is no longer "Joan & Amy" on the blogspot blogs.....BUT, we still have the picture of the two of us....so you know it's from us.

Okay, I'd better stop babbling and try to get my "words" working for the day....I do still have to teach.

Double Pocket Card

Today's technique challenge was to create a double pocket card. It was actually quite funny when I looked to see what the challenge was for the day because at THE EXACT SAME TIME I was printing off the instructions from off of Judy's blog.
I really like this set of scrapbook paper....Fall Flowers. I also used the "Happiness" background stamp which I have not used since last years' convention....bad girl!!!! The lower "bookmark" is actually done with Soft Sky but it looks a bit murky in the photo. I would like to make this again with a little more time at hand.

Marker Technique 19 & 20

This may be sort of covered elsewhere.....but just plain colouring with the markers is #19. It makes it so much fun because some images can look completely different depending on what colour combination you use.

At convention the demonstrator also said that our markers work well for colouring hair at the spur of the moment. I wasn't going to experiment with that and then take a picture.....so just play around with that yourself. (hee hee)

The final technique is creating a sort of stained glass effect on velum by embossing an outline image with black, gold or silver embossing powder on velum and then colouring in the spaces with the brush tip.

If anyone knows of some other creative uses for the markers that have not been covered here please let me know. Thanks for your patience in waiting for me to post these each day. I've tried to remember to "Label" them so that you can get the whole bunch at once.

Kharma Featured...

Todays featured stamper on Splitcoast was Jodi (aka: Kharagirl)
Remember for the Featured Stamper Challenge you have to pick a piece from the gallery of the featured stamper and then "case" it....change the colours, stamp, embellishment, etc. It was very hard to pick a card to case because Jodi does a lot of fantastic work, so check out her gallery with the link above.

I like this little clock from "Time for You" so that's why I chose this card. I also liked the way Jodi created the layers of scallops. I didn't outline mine as boldly as she was able to, so my Rose Red doesn't show up as well. I used So Saffron, Certainly Celery, Bashful Blue and the Cutie Pie Designer Paper.

Marker Technique 17 & 18

Have you ever wished that you could have more than one colour on your wheeled images......you can do it with the brush tip of the markers using Technique #17. You may not be able to continue the colour for as long as the cartridge, but you can still add some extra pizzaz to a small piece. Just remember to huff all the way around the wheel.

Technique 18 is probably the most common use of the "journaling" tip of the marker....writing entries on your scrapbook pages or writing messages in your cards. It's so nice to be able to have everything match!!!

Cow Parade???

Today's inspiration challenge on Splitcoast was based on the Cow Parade figurines.
Oh my word, there are tons of differently decorated cows. We didn't have put a cow on our creation...which is a good thing because I don't have any cows....but we could pick a cow and use it for inspiration. I choose one called "Gotspots" shown in the thumbnail. It was a tough choice because I also liked the "Cowmedy and Tragedy","Tutancowman" and "Here comes the Sun". I decided this cow got the whole barnyard to participate....
This card has ended up with three challenges in it... Inspiration - (Gallery), Ways to use it - (Gallery) and the Limited Supply - (Gallery)

This was fun to do.....

Marker Technique 15 & 16

This 15th technique is a bit tricky. Who would have thought of colouring the pearls from the Pretties Kit.....Wow. I slipped one of the pearls onto the stick pin in order to colour it with the marker tip. It flips around a bit so you have to take charge!!!! I don't think I actually rolled the pearl in the embossing powder put rather sprinkled it on while it was still on the stick pin. I ended up putting 2 coats on to try to make the colour more uniform. It's not something I would want to do all the time, or for a whole set of cards....but it is a nice touch for a special card.

The example I've done for number 16 has to be my least favorite only because I don't have any "good" brass templates. Larger images would probably be easier to work with.

Finally Something New....

I'm slapping this on the blog quickly before I head over to Amy's for our technique workshop tonight. I created this over two days..... (no 20 minute card creations for me right now.)

I'm disappointed with the way I coloured the hippo. She's a bit washed out because of the blender pen so her colour isn't very even, or vibrant....but I guess she just came out of the water to visit a friend with her balloons.

Marker Techniques 13 & 14

Technique 13 was a bit iffy.....I scribbled on the page protector, spritzed water and ended up with mud...I don't know what to say....I LUCKED OUT by getting the sky for this little bird....I'm sorry that I don't remember the colours that I used, but I know I will never get this bit of clouded sky again, no matter how hard I try!!!!!
I stamped the bird and branch with StazOn ink before colouring them with markers.

Colouring the flowers in the Pretties kit is pretty standard for technique #14. It sure is nice to be able to create a flower to go along with the layout you are creating. I must remember that water helps to eliminate colour where you want it. The nice thing about these flowers is that you can wash them out to begin again if you need to....as long as you do it quickly enough and the colour isn't too dark. (Sorry that the printing didn't turn out very well for this second example.)

Marker Techniques 11 & 12

Marker Technique #11 is Thumping It just so happens that it was the Wednesday Tutorial that Beate did on Splitcoast this week. So, for MUCH better instructions (and step by step pictures to go along....click here.

Beate used a more delicate stamp than my ginormaous flowers and the effect is wonderful.

Click here to see the Splitcoast gallery that shows cards using this technique. There aren't a lot, but they are varied. There's actually a really cool card with the alligator from "Wild About You" that also uses the two-toned marker technique like I used for Technique #5.


Are you one of those people who loves everything to match on your projects.....but you're sometimes disappointed because you want to put ribbon on your card but you can't find any that matches perfectly...Have no fear....use the brush tip of your marker to "dye" white ribbon. This works perfectly on both the grosgrain and the taffeta ribbons. You can colour the ribbon as light or
dark as you like to get the effect you want. I've ended up doing this a couple of times now.

I'm still working on some of the Splitcoast challenges for this week. The colour challenge is truely a challenge for me - Glorious Green, Real Red and Night of Navy. I'm challenged, but here are some absolutely FANASTIC cards using these three colours.

I'm hoping I'll get something finished on the weekend to post....Amy & I have two workshops this weekend and a Diva Day Saturday morning with our awesome Edmonton Team. Even if I don't get the challenges posted, I will continue to post the marker techniques each day.

Button's Birthday...

She just might get upset if she knew I was posting this....but here is the card I literally Whipped up for Allison's birthday. I got distracted and ....oh, excuses, excuses!!!

Anyway, it started out as a case of my own card from Beate's Weekend Sketch Challenge, but then it evolved into it's own form....just like Allison! All of the buttons are her....she's been her Daddy's button ever since she was born!!!

I was surprised and please when I threw the Lovely Lilac, Almost Amethyst and Groovy Guava together.....Who'd have Thunk????

Marker Techniques 7, 8, 9, & 10

I'm including four pages from the marker booklet today because I may not get a chance to post any tomorrow because we're having our team meeting.

I was blown away by this Embossing Technique when I did it. I never thought of colouring on top of the versamark "ink". It gives the stamp an interesting effect when finished. For this sample I embossed the entire image from "Take Three" but I only added marker to the centre image.

Number 8 is pretty self explanatory too. The key is
to remember to begin colouring with the lightest colour first.
Technique Number 9 took a little bit of practice because you don't want to mist too much water onto the stamp, otherwise you end up with a muddy mess. Hold the stamp armlengths away from you and then catch the mist once you've sprayed. I did end up liking the way this technique looks once I was done.

Number 10 is using the Spritzer Tool, which I just love!!!! For the "Enjoy" the white piece is spritzed with the ballet blue to match. The "Laugh, Play Share" is spritzed with the three colours which are at work there, and finally the flower is a bold stamp which has been inked with the So Saffron and then spritzed with Celery before applying it to the paper.

I have to go now and make a birthday card for my beloved daughter who turns 17 tomorrow. Should have done it yesterday while she was doing her Driver's Ed!!!

Today's Challenge...

Monday's Technique Challenge was "Stacked Ribbon"...two more layers of ribbon as an embellishment...with or without a bow.

I have been wanting to use this "citrus" stamp from Tart and Tany for a long time. I've seen some great bright and beautiful cards on Splitcoast with lemons, limes and oranges. I wanted to use the microbeads, and since they only come in orange, that slice got perked up a bit more than the others. I added them around the outside of the scalloped edge, but still dazzled up the lime and lemon with "diamonds" I used the Tombow glue for the microbeads and as you can see....some areas are thicker than others....oh well.

I wanted to try the watercolour technique I talked about the other day from Julie's tutorial...so the "Merci" card evolved. I liked working with the markers, aqua painter and watercolour paper! It's much easier for me than the
watercolour crayons...which I like, I just haven't learned to use them properly yet.

I drew a line of Elegant Eggplant around the edge of the paper and then used the aqua painter to draw the colour into the middle. I guess what I like best about this technique is that you can remove colour from the paper with the painter if you think you have too much.

On the "Merci" section, I just ran the brush tip of the marker along the exact edge of the paper....it still moved into the paper with the water but wasn't as "thick" as on the flower.

I used Eggplant only because I needed to use ribbon and it was the only purple I had. I'm slotting this under the "Limited Supply...Why, oh why, did I buy that" challenge from last week because the green ribbon comes from one of the Ribbon Originals that I love some of...but not all.

Marker Techniques 5 & 6

Here are the next two pages of the marker booklet...

I remember at convention how the demonstrator expected us to all freak out when she placed the tip of her light coloured marker into a drop of dark reinker.....it really wasn't that scary. It did, however, take a bit of practise, or the right image to the the proper effect.










This is an old stand-by....It's fun though. I remember colouring the different lines of the "Print Pattern" background stamp with different colours. It takes a lot of "huffing" once you're done!


I'm off to do today's challenge....it involves layering ribbon. If I beat Allison to the computer I may be able to post it later tonight....LOL.

20 Ways to use our Markers...

I was quite excited at convention last summer during the session on using markers; I was amazed at all the different examples that were given. I decided I wanted to make a little booklet to show customers the different examples, but as you can see it took me a while to put it together.
I don't think that I will post all 20 right now....but I'll give you the first 4 pages.
(I need to get to bed because I'm going to have to try to get in to school early in the morning. I KNOW my classroom and the music room are going to be in shambles after the floors have been waxed over spring break.)




The printing for this didn't come out very clearly in the photo...it says..."Colour with markers directly onto watercolour paper. Use a blender pen to remove brush lines.
I'm actually going to make a new page for this because I have since watched Julie Buhler's (from Paper Pleasing Ideas) tutorial on "No Copics, No Problem"...watercolouring with markers onto watercolour paper and was quite impressed. I'm not sure that I have thick enough paper, but I'm going to try her method and add it as #21.







Yes this is me...Joan...my first birthday, which is why I'm pointing with my finger. I got that bunny and he was that colour. And, I must say, that dear old bunny is nearly 50 and is being kept in a very safe place. Some things ya just don't part with.














No extra explanation is needed for this one since my printing, as atrocious as it is....is visible.
















It took a while for me to get something I was happy with using this technique. I found that no matter how long I let the white craft dry....even if I used a heat tool, the white seemed to come away as I coloured with the marker. I believe I left the top leaf and flower white so that people could see the difference.
