Seagrams 7

I was downtown with the inclination to paint some landscape, but wasn't really feeling excited about anything. I came home at 2pm and decided to paint another old Playboy ad. Maybe the colors and the marina in San Diego made me excited to paint another sailboat scene. Splash into summer with Seagram's 7! oil on canvas, 24 by 24

I'm on Cloth Paper Scissor's website!

One of my "Tea Party" inspired pieces is now on Cloth Paper Scissors website. I should have a second piece in the upcoming January/February issue too. I have a subscription to the magazine though I haven't gotten my copy yet. It's supposed to be on new stands January 6th though the subscribers usually get theirs first. Has anyone gotten theirs yet? I can't wait to get my hands on a copy. :)

Here's the link to the website:

Yay!

San Diego

I was with family in San Diego for Christmas and, of course, brought my painting supplies! The weather forecasters were predicting rain rain rain but fortunately they were wrong. I went out with my mom Tuesday and Friday and the light was PERFECT!! Cool and clear. The first painting is of La Jolla (oil on canvas, 28 by 22). Off Prospect St we went to the balcony of a restaurant that was closed and got this amazing vantage point from high up! The restaurant workers were coming back and forth, but they didn't seem to mind me working there, I think it was entertainment for their smoke-breaks. Then on Sunday I wanted to go into downtown San Diego and find something to paint. We ended up on Coronado Island. I wanted to find a nice shot of the Hotel del Coronado, but they've built so many unsightly outlying structures which block the main building that there's not a good view from the street anymore! Too bad... But this outlying building on the marina, built one year before the Hotel, had the same flavor of the main structure but to me was much more picturesque (oil on canvas, 30 by 24). Also here's a composite shot of the work in progress (starting upper left going clockwise): as you can see from the early pictures there is a failure underneath the current painting, un urban landscape of Tune-Up Masters in the Valley... it's good practice from time to time to paint over failed paintings because it's easier to dominate them! They suck! and so you are easily able to paint all over them as quickly as possible and thus GET TO THE POINT! ^_^

Alpha Stamps Giveaways!

I got sucked into the vortex!

Since Jared and I just got his and her's iphones. (His is black and mine is white.) I have recently been sucked onto Facebook and Twitter which are really cool on the iphone. I know, I know... just one more thing to keep me from making art. :P The programs are based on Status updates, especially Twitter. It has been really fun to see what Micheal DeMeng is working on and when Claudine Hellmuth is out walking her dog. I've also been able to reconnect with some long lost friends. So anyway, if you guys are interested, hit me up and add me as a friend so you too will know when I'm doing lame things like cleaning the house. (today's status) hehe

It's coming.

the Hive at the Mountain Bar

On Saturday the 13th, the Hive artists were invited to do their thing at the Mountain Bar in Chinatown downtown Los Angeles; I did a few drawings and this was my favorite. I have a lot of fun sketching in bars! There's always such a pulse and flux of humanity. When you draw from life you have to go with the flow... it's such fun to try and capture a simple slice of life!

update Sunday the 21st: I figure why not just change the image as the painting progresses rather than waste blog space with new posts? I put more color on the painting today with a little more concern for the composition, but still very rough and working from memory. The person in the front right has changed hair and position and now I definitely want someone in the left foreground... Here's another superimposed image.

update Saturday the 20th: I've started a 30 by 40 painting based on the scene. So far it's just color splashed here and there. The image here is the underpainting and original drawing superimposed in photoshop. The original drawing is a little narrower than the canvas I have, but I think it'll actually help the composition! It's a fun way to start a painting and a good way to move forward on it.

painting at the art walk

I was out with Mr. Let's Paint TV for some nighttime street painting at the Art Walk! Here's some video of John in full effect... and here's the painting I did on the corner of 5th and Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. oil on canvas, 36 by 18

marlboro lights

Here's an especially sloppy painting of a Marlboro ad from 1983. I was particularly into the predominantly cool colors and tried to keep it really messy... it needs a few fixes here and there but it's close to feeling 'done'! oil on canvas, 24 by 36.

Altered Journal

I just finished another journal yesterday. This one is going to be a Christmas gift for someone special. I wonder who it could be???
The pictures came out kinda crappy. It's gloomy outside so the light wasn't great. It is SO much prettier in person.

A Few More Christmas Cards

Here's a few more cards I finished yesterday:

And for those of you who asked, here's the link to where I found these awesome envelopes. :)

Christmas Cards

Hey guys,

I've been busy working on a few Christmas cards for family that were inspired by these cool red string tie envelopes I found and I thought I would share them with you.

Kinda a weird thing to be inspired by right? LOL I just love string tie envelopes. I don't know why but I think there's something really romantic about them. So anyway, of course I had to scoop them up and make some pretty cards to fit inside. These are one sided mini collaged cards done on Watercolor paper. I have written Christmas messages on the back.

Hope everyone is enjoying the season!

Street Painting of the Water Nymph

The festival in Houston, Texas which benefits the Center for Hearing and Speech, has to be one of my favorite events. The location is really great and the organizers are amazing. They really take care of the artists and are so appreciative of what they do. I can't say enough about the event and the organization it supports. Remmie and I both had such an amazing time, and even though it was a little chilly, the weather held out with clear skies.

The painting I created for them is titled the Water Nymph. I am really happy with the end result. Red hair again ;) Anytime I can paint red hair I do...It's so fun to do long flowing locks of fiery red hair.

Cute art video. :)

marlboro country

I didn't feel like going out to paint any landscape today but I wanted to paint something. Here's another painting inspired by the same stack of old Playboy magazines that my friend down the street found. This time I painted one of the ads rather than the nudes. I think I'm sub-consciously giving the "western art" genre the finger with this one. Repainting it made it fun for me, I used it as an excuse to throw some paint around, and that's what it's all about anyway! I think it needs a little more work but I'm happy with it so far. oil on canvas, 48 by 36

Let's Paint TV, Venice Beach Edition

I went out with John 'Mr. Let's Paint TV' Kilduff to Venice Beach today for some street LPTV. Venice is renowned for it's laid back, endless summer, hippy vibe, but if you've ever visited you also know it has a rough side. Still that just makes it all the more real! It was quite an adventure, it felt even edgier than doing it in downtown LA, especially as the other local performing regulars sized John up and staked out their turf, but in the end everyone loved it! I think we were only out about an hour painting, and I spent 20 minutes of that taping John doing the show, so here's basically a 30 minute portait of Venice and Let's Paint TV! Also a shot of both easels and my painting more even more roughly laid in. I still like it! I'll be adding video of the event once John edits it and puts it on youtube. What a hoot! oil on canvas, 18 by 14.

Street Painting in Houston.

This weekend is the Via Colori Street Painting Festival in Houston, Texas. Last year I was the festivals featured artist and unfortunately we were rained out. I barely finished a face in my painting before it began to pour. This year is destined for great weather. I've designed a new image for the event. It is based on the painting I designed for 07 but revamped. Here's the sketch!

It's titled 'The Water Nymph'. She'll have flowing red hair, of course!

South Pasadena Art Walk

I tell you, there are so many art walks! Today I was at one in South Pasadena. I decided since the painting I did of the Rialto is at the SoPas gallery, why not paint another landscape at the art walk for fun? Here's a photo of the lay-in, my sophisticated kindergarten drawing, and the same painting a couple hours later. It's Buster's again! The corner of Mission and Meridian. oil on canvas, 12 by 24.

Let's Paint TV, the street edition

Last night at the Downtown LA Art Walk was a blast, some good old fashioned nitetime alla prima plein air urban landscape! John was doing his show with the P.A. blaring and painting a great shot of 4th and Spring and I did a painting of John painting his painting. Here is some video of the evening, it gives you a feeling for the madness and joy of painting and life. oil on canvas, 24 by 12

Joggles Class

I've been getting a few rather upset emails about the Joggles class date change and I just wanted to tell everyone again how sorry I am. The change was completely out of my hands. Joggles made the decision to push back the class date because they were unable to order the class supplies in time. If for some reason you are not able to attend the "class" don't worry. Every lesson is in pdf format, step-by-step, with lots of pictures for you to print out and work at your leisure. I will also always be available to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you all so much for you patience and again I'm really sorry for any inconvenience this has caused,

XO

back at cindy's

I put more on the painting of Cindy's today. It needs more work... I like that it's more resolved but still rough. oil on canvas, 48 by 24.

cha-cha lounge

Yesterday the light wasn't working to paint more on Cindy's, so I stayed home and put some paint on a composition from a bar called "Cha-Cha Lounge", it's right across the street from the Red Lion which is a favorite place of mine. It's all based on drawings on location and memory. It's really rough and still work in progress but, like the Footsie's painting, I'm still pleased with it! oil on canvas, 30 by 48.

New Holiday Art!

Things here are in full Holiday swing. I have Christmas music playing to set the mood here in the studio and I am working on lots of new Christmas art to post for sale for the Holidays. These tags are the first installment and are now up for sale in my Etsy store.

How cute would these be peeking out of stockings or tied to packages come Christmas morning?

These are all very glittery and much more beautiful in person.

More holiday art coming soon!
