Future Astronaut?

Last night Killian and I took a trip to the gas station for some milk and of course a treat... It was quite late, but lil Killa' was wide awake jabbering my ear off. I thoroughly enjoy listening to my little 4 Year Old when he is rambling about all kinds of crazy information that his little brain has accumulated over the short 4 years he has lived...

Last night, Killian's lesson for Mom, "Space!" He informed me all about Gravity, told me what it was and how it worked. Now I am pretty sure his definition was not exactly as scientific as it should be, but Holy Cow I was amazed. His lesson went something like this, "Gravity is on the Earth, but not on the Moon. It is why when we play outside we don't fall off Earth. The Earth goes around and around and we never fall off because of Gravity. If we were on the Moon and we jumped we would float and fall off because there is no Gravity on the Moon, someday Mom I will travel to the Moon and tell you all about it."

He went on to tell me about the "Planets in our Solar System," (and yes those were the exact words he used.) He told me all about Jupiter, Mars, Earth and Pluto. "Earth is in the perfect place because it isn't too far from the sun so it stays a good temperature, but Pluto is far far away from the Sun so it is very cold."

I didn't want our little adventure to end....there are days when it seems nothing goes right, but then there are the little moments like these that make everything so worth it. I love you little Killa and I hope one day you will travel to the Moon so you can tell Mom all about it.

Summer Babies

I have a MAJOR soft spot for all creatures… This spring we had three nests around our house. Blake was nice enough to leave all the nests alone (he hates that they poo all over!) We had two in the front yard and one in the back. The back nest was inside our pavilion. In early spring the sparrow babies fell out of the nest :(, There were three babies and it was so sad, I found them on the ground under their nest. I didn’t think the sparrows would lay more eggs, but they did!! I was able to watch the little birds grow.

Unfortunately, While Blake was outside he noticed one of the babies had fallen out of the nest. I climbed my ladder that I had put out there so I could check on the babies and I put the little bird back in the nest. I searched the Internet to see what the likelihood that the baby would survive. According to my research if the baby was healthy the mom wouldn’t reject it. I checked on the little baby the next day and it didn’t make it. It died, but there were still two healthy babies. I was worried because the nest was so shallow, so I took a dishtowel and wrapped it around the nest so the others wouldn’t fall out.

About two weeks later, the Momma and Dad bird started teaching the little ones how to fly. It was crazy to watch them, the little birds were down on the ground and the parents would squawk at them and come down and peck at them until they would fly. It took a whole day from them to finally catch on to flying. Then for three days the little birds hung out in the backyard with their parents. They would fly around but stay really close to the nest.

Everyday when I let the dogs out I look to see if the little birds are still flying around the backyard, but they have left. ☹ It makes me sad that they are gone, but happy they survived and are now out on there own. It was a really neat experience to watch them grow and learn to fly, I never realized how much work goes into raising little wild birds. I wonder if they will come back next year and visit!!!
