Bring on 2005

Heck, I am not gonna let 2004 sign off without having one last final say. The curtains are almost down for 2004 and well, I hope everyone has made some resolutions for 2005. Not only that, I hope ya’ll stick to it, I know I’ll try my best :)

Party hard, party safe and I’ll see you guys in 2005. Peace, love and harmony from above. Be safe.

Happy New Years!

2004 In Perspective, Finale

In the midst of all this freak tsunami chaos, 3 more days to go to the New Year, I think I better finish off my 2004 review. It’ll be premature ‘cos it’s hard to write when incidents like this occur and lives are lost. It’s sad to read about the death of innocent people who just want to spend their lazy Sunday having family picnic and basking on our tropical sun. But lives were taken and families destroyed. Rest in peace my fellow Penangites.

Progression

Since my enrollment at EAA, things were not as smooth as I would like. I struggled and suffered to even break into the top 10. It doesn’t really matter where I am on the standings but it’s a reference of your performance against your classmates. And dwelling almost at the bottom isn’t exactly very comforting to my already battered and dented academic self-esteem. Somehow, I became quite a popular figure to the lecturers, but for all the wrong reasons, for example; “The guy whose always late” or “That dude at the back who always asks when is the next break” “The loud one”…the list goes on. :)

But I force my way thru, took on every challenge and faced every task that was thrown on my direction. I didn’t succeed in all of them, but my attempts were appreciated and slowly, my reputation changed.

What don’t destroy you will only make you stronger

My 2 months stint in KL really gave me a boost. It made me look at design in a whole new standpoint. Fast forward to present time, I’ve have set up shop on the top side. Lecturers now remember me for the right reason. With the New Year approaching, I can only look forward to good times ahead.

Peace out. In case I don’t have an entry in a few days time, Happy New Year!

Shockwaves in Sleepy Penang

Swept away

[3pm onwards]

OK, I do not know how I can start this entry. So I’ll get straight down to the point. We were hit by a shockwave coming from Aceh’s earth quake. The quake in Aceh was measured to be 8.9 on the Richter Scale, which makes it the 5th largest earth quake in the world and the largest since in 1964 in Alaska (if I’m not mistaken). Sadly, there are casualties. It happened at the worst possible time, on a Sunday where families spent their lazy afternoon on the beach having picnics.

Penang was the worst hit with almost the entire stretch of Tanjung Tokong, Gurney Drive and Batu Ferringhi covered with mud and sea debree. My dad witnessed the incoming waves first-hand and estimate it to be at least around 5m in height. My mom, Simran and I went on around checking out the ruins around Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Tokong area. Several dead bodies were lying around on Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Tokong has been blocked off by the police. I hope everyone else is OK.

[11pm onwards]

I took a drive later on to pick up a friend and saw the extend of the damage. It did felt like a movie with so much destruction and mess. Cars, vans and other motor vehicles were covered with thick layers of mud, dirt and so on. In my opinion, Tanjung Tokong suffered the most damage with the main road's divider being swept all the way to the other side, slamming onto houses and cars. It doesn't help that there was heavy construction going on within that area.

Note: Current death toll has increased to 53 throughout Malaysia, 38 of them are from Penang.

Lets take a moment of silence for those who perished in this incident.

Big, Fluffy & Retro

Well, since 2004 still have a good 8 days to go. I’ve decided to take some time off from “2004 In Perspective” series and get back to my daily ramblings and nonsense in view of the fact that there was a ‘party’ with a ‘70s theme to it last night.

It has been quite a while since I last clubbed. So it is always a big thing for me, same goes for people who sees me; “Wah, Kok Meng!” “Fuhh, Kok Meng clubbing?!” yada yada yada, sigh. I have a life, OK? :)

I was disappointed by the fact that no one actually dressed up apart from our group of friends. It’s a shame that the theme had so much promise yet it fell short on the night. With nobody else dressing up, we did looked like fools until our group won around 5-6 jugs of beer under the best dressed category and some side contest. Who’s the fool now?! Heh!!

I’ll let the pictures do the talking :)

Getting geared up and drunk before the party, thanks to the local 7-Eleven

Slightly drunk already, having just arrived at LUSH

Bored and drunk, then came Ronald McDonald with blue hair, minus the costume

Heheh, the afro was too cool. Had to try it on myself. Still drunk.

Simran, trying to be gay. So Eugene show him how its done. He's a natural!

In came, the real afro. 2 hours later, being the celebrity that he is, he's entitled to be late. Will the real afro please stand up?

Simran winning us free beers, despite giving the wrong answer.

Gettin' wild, more drunk and getting restless.

Simran interrupting Sina's makeout session, hehehe.

Me and Vig drinking beer (turns out to be water, blek!). Joanne & Simran getting it on.

So there you have it. The night where we re-live our father's era. Peace!

2004 In Perspective, Part II

Let’s call this a little mini-series of how 2004 went for me…Heh!

So, finally my wish was answered and surprisingly, I even slapped myself when I arrived at my room in Kelana Jaya staring blankly onto my iBook wondering…

What the heck? I must have done something really really good to deserve this. But what was it? Hmmmmm…

And while I bask upon this noteworthy achievement, the best is yet to unfold. Not to bore readers, I’ll have it summarized. Whatever that I used to do in Penang, I’ll do it with more enthusiasm, excitement and carefree in KL, that’s the way it should be! And let’s just say I set some sort of target for myself while staying at the capital, must do this, must do that. And well, I did all that :)

When Ryan was down in KL. We went searching for greens

Battle of the Bands at Taylor's. Ian played with John's Mistress as a guest band

Being with KLue, suddenly the world seemed for assessable for poor people like me. I get to go to the hottest parties in town, concerts, gigs, events, launches and much much more. And what could be better than that? Take a guess….IT’S ALL FREE! Wait, what if I tell you this can go up a notch higher…take a guess….no? WE GET FREE EVERYTHING!! Food, drinks, bags, Chivas12, you name it, we’ll get it free!

The best event: Free-flow of Chivas plus one bottle for us and on top of that, free-flow of food too

1 Day, 3 events, countless amount of free stuff and free food

The Powerbook G4 at work, makes my iBook not worthy :( (My desk on the right pic)

Audrey hard at work while I'm outside taking self-potrait :)

Last day, just finished work. Penang here I come!

A shout-out to the Puchong boys (Ian, Dimar and Nadir), without them, my weekends seems pointless. Thanks for everything (notably Zouk, Bangsar, Breakers, Hartamas on weekdays) and I’ll thank Ian personally for tolerating my occasional passing-out (drunk) on his bed while he has to move downstairs to the couch. Thanks bro.

Living in KL showed me a whole new world of design, copy writing and the outrageous lifestyles of the people here. Man, it made me feel like a village kid. But sometimes, its eye-candy for me, hmmmm….uhhh….nice…..”Wow, you call that a skirt?

It seems like forever while spending 2 months over there. I never wanted it to end. But like the old saying “All good things must come to an end” it had to come to an end. It was quite the emotional departure from the lifestyle I used to only dream about…But I’ll go back to the island a different person (design-wise and maybe more mature or professional, heh)…Now let’s see what I’ve learn in KL can do for me in Penang…

To be continued…

[Note: There was an horrific car crash just outside Copthorne Hotel, Iswara meets lamp post, result: half of the main road's street lamps' power got cut off. Is it a trend? There was another one earlier at Greenlane]

2004 In Perspective, Part I

Howdy, what a wonderful month it has been. Let’s have a little review session here since it’s almost the New Year already. Productive and progression would be the most suitable 2 words to describe 2004 for me since picking up the pieces back in 2003.

Productive

Well, I accomplished quite a few feats this year with the purchase of my brand spanking new computer (to date: not brand spanking new no more) which for the first time ever, enables me to achieve new heights on my design work and also exposure. I was using an ancient pre-historic PentiumII prior to the new comp. On top of that, I captained (EAA) Equator Academy of Art’s Redbull Indoor Football Team in which the event was held at Megamall, Seberang Jaya. We played the first game of the event. Being from EAA, we were just here to make up the numbers, but we proved to be more significant than that. After 2 games, not only we needed to win our last game, but we need to win by a 5 goal margin to qualify on goal difference. Sounded impossible at first, but we ended up trashing Prime College 8-0 (it was the highest scoring game on the event). By qualifying for the 2nd round, it felt like winning the event already. We bow down during the 2nd round to a 0-3 defeat.

But things got better after passing the half year mark when in August, a certain Juliana Choo from KLue Magazine decided to give me a ring at 11am while I was still nicely cooped up in my bedroom, refusing to wake up on such a beautiful and cool morning (also quite depressed ‘cos I haven’t found a job for my internship). She revealed that she was keen on signing me on and invited us (me and Audrey, she got a place before I did) to make a trip down to KL for an interview session. To me, it wasn’t an interview, but more like meeting us in person and welcoming us into KLue. So Audrey and I hurried our way to KL from Penang on that day itself so we could meet up at KLue the next morning, thanks to Ian for providing transport and shelter for this impromptu trip. After months of searching for a company to take me in as an intern, countless amounts of “We’ll call you back” finally, I secure a place. From there, things just got better and better.

After KLue, went to Burger King, Bangsar to celebrate.
From left: Ian , Audrey and me

On one fine day, mom suddenly, out of the blue asked me about Apple Computers. Having just bought a PC two months ago, I’ve already given up hope trying to own an Apple Computer. But strangely enough, mom suddenly agreed that I deserve one. Wow! Seriously, I was smiling from ear-to-ear for days. With the limited budget we have, choosing the model was nippy, 12” iBook G4 was my weapon of choice. By August 14, Saturday, with my bags packed and reinforced with an iBook; KL, here I come! From there on, the new chapter of my life begins.

My baby! Muah muah

To be continued…

The Unsavvy Duo

The 70s Character Design

With the holidays finally underway and doing absolutely nothing for the first time in months, “MAN…IT FEELS GOOOOD!!

But chances are, its only temporary. With the whole year-end party extravaganza within sight (e.g. Xmas and New Years), busy times are right ahead.

I hand in my resignation to CG Computers yesterday that will take effect on Christmas, after having realized I won’t save-up in time for the iPod, dammit! I guess it can wait. I hope my cousin still remembers that she owes me a two-way ticket to Australia this coming April after my graduation…would love to get out from the country again since my last excursion was way back in, errrr…94/95, I think…

Here’s something somewhat interesting. Just yesterday, this duo approached us to buy an iPod 20GB and decided he will purchase via credit card. Everything was business-as-usual right up to the point when we have to call the bank to verify the card, one of them started to freak out:

[Translated from hokkien]
“Hey!! What are you doing?! Why are you calling the bank?!”
“Hey! Hey! I want to cancel my purchase! Gimme back my card!”
“Oii! Deaf ah? I said I want my f**king card back!”

What a loser…

All that happened while I was lurking at the corner, ready to spring into action, should any violence burst out. Super-hero me emerged. Luckily, it wasn’t necessary. The funny thing was, he proclaims to be from Singapore while his “credit card” address is in Gelugor, Penang.

Note: iPods are cheaper in Singapore, and the picture above was that final assignment I've hand-in

Change Me Change You

Today, the last and final assignment will be submitted, for this term. And then finally, the holidays would officially be up and running. Starting to have this strange feeling creeping up on me with the holiday season around already. Haven’t really had holidays since my 2 months stint in KL back in August 14 all the way to October 15. Seriously, I don’t even know what to do…maybe that’s the whole point, doing nothing. Hehehehe.

Just to put things into perspective, referring to one of my previous entry A Step Closer, times of change have already sprung into action. Quite a handful of my friends have already decided (well, at least for a few years on) their future which is to work outside Malaysia. More than a decade of friendship, with all the dramas, politics, ups and downs we’ve been thru, finally, it is work commitment that eventually split us apart. I’m still pretty hesitant about my own future…where to go, what to do.

The next chapter in everyone’s life is unfolding. With a few more chapters to go, eg Getting married and having kids, hehehe, well…that’s still pretty distant, I think.

With the New Year just around the corner, and with this entire ‘change’ thing going on, might as well take this opportunity to have a new image for myself. I guess it’s about time to throw in the towel and present a newer and more polished version of me. Hmmpf.

Just a final say, I’ve never once even came close in picturing myself as I am today. And with this new chapter tiptoeing within, it can get quite nerve-wrecking when you realize planned situations hardly become reality (at least for me). So bring it on, life! I’m ready for ya!

Peace.

After more than a decade of friendship, here’s a toast to the oldest clichĂ© on the face of this over-populated planet, Friends forever! Hehehehe….

Twelve Is The New Eleven

The holidays have been kind so far. This has only been the 2nd day and quite a lot has happened. The biggest bombshell was when everyone showed up for Futsal on Thursday night and not only that, we were double-booked and were pushed back an hour later. Even so, everyone waited. That was cool. I think everyone enjoyed themselves, even though we’re not at our top form.

[My moment of madness: I was the goalkeeper, when the ball was in my hands. I rolled it forward, chased after it and took a shot but it was blocked by Eugene yet somehow it manage to squeeze between him and Matt and I continue my crazy run towards goal and took another shot. But it was saved and was faced with a lightning counter-attack, I ran back as fast as I can and dived to block the shot, and block I did. :) ]

Well, after almost a month working with CG Computers (AppleCorner) I’ve finally sold my first computer. Powerbook 12” SuperDrive was the model and well, the buyer is a friend of mine. It still counts! Hehehehe.

It’s great to finally have everyone back again. My body still aches and I’m wondering how am I gonna make it to “Rave It!”.

Note: The trip down to KL for a wedding video was cancelled. Too tired.

This was taken last year, but its still pretty much the same.

Thursday, 9 December 2004

Jolly, eh?

It is done. It’s over, finito! It hasn’t actually sunk in just yet. But I will be expecting myself to go crazy when I wake up from my ‘recovery sleep’. OK, seriously…I have one more assignment to hand-in but it’s technically finished already, all I need is to render and print it out, so I can say my holidays are finally here!! Believe it or not, this is my first holiday in 2 semester…I’m getting tired.

I have to make a trip to KL this Friday, *sigh*…this is for a wedding video. Darn it, I wish I could cancel it…I need a break.

My sister is on her way back from KL today, arghhhh…! Have to clean up some stuff from her room. Since her departure to KL a year (or so) ago, her room has become my room while my old room has turned into a store room for all my stuff (F.Y.I: graphic designers have tons of junk).

Perhaps I should keep this under the table or behind closed doors. But it’s too funny and I can’t resist. One of my colleagues was doing a demonstration for this customer when suddenly we realized the iBook 14” had hanged…yes, it hanged! An OS X hanged! Wow, but I don’t think the customer realized so (with some quick thinking from me, go me!) I sidetracked his attention to the iMac G5, buying some time for my colleague to recover the system. “Sir, this iMac ahh…damn terror wan lor. Can you find the computer?” hehehe, I have been using the same ploy for awhile now, I need a new one.

Note: OS X is still better than XP despite that slight blip. So to XP lovers out there, bugger off! :)

An Hat-trick to Forget

OK, I promised I wouldn’t mention anything about my assignments till the end of the week. I couldn’t resist. Here’s a lil say on my first day of the 8th week.

Today would mark the start of the week that most Equator students fear, the dreaded Assessment Week. Well, fortunately, for the 2nd consecutive Assessment Week I’ve had a smooth flow, apart from rushing to the print shops and last minute adjustments, I manage to maintain my composure and went on to have decent presentation. Come to think of it, I figured I have finally conquered my fear for presentation. No more shaky hands, no more stuttering…I can even generate conversations. Just today, I had one of the longest interviews. It lasted probably around 25-30 minutes, even though I thought it wasn’t long enough…

But the day didn’t go on spotless. Like a young child wearing a white shirt while eating Wan Tan Mee, he’ll bound to get at least a single drop of Wan Tan Mee soup on his shirt. As for me…my single drop of Wan Tan Mee on my white shirt was yet another summon from my good old friend, the MPPP. It’s the 3rd summon I’ve had in 2 weeks. I got this recent one while I was at the print shop. Looks like I’m on a roll here, a hat-trick of summons. And I haven’t even settled my previous summon for littering. *sigh*

A Step Closer

Tomorrow, I’ll enter the 8th week. Oh boy, here we go. Late nights has already started. In case anyone is wondering, I’m taking a little breather here, that’s why I have time to write this. Have been working on my assignments since the afternoon, taking a lil time off to chill and tidy up myself and my work.

An interesting conversation was had yesterday when we found a mini card calendar on Ian’s windscreen. As I check up on everyone’s birthdays, I said, “I wonder how things would be when we turn 22.” Well, as far as Ian and Ryan are concerned, they’ll still be cracking up on their college work, while I graduate this coming April…so thing are rather uncertain for me, I could end up anywhere, heck….I might still be studying for my degree. But chances are I’ll be working for a couple of years to save up for the degree. I could end up anywhere…given the probability, I might leave the island again in search for better opportunities and I can only hope Penang’s design industry would pick up in the near future.

*Sigh* I guess the time for change has finally arrived (or maybe a lil later on). Gosh, I have been studying for practically all my life, and now, finally….after all these years, we’re almost at the finish line.

Been having this appalling backache for 2 days already and it hasn’t help me getting thru this muddle one single bit. Well, wasn’t actually thinking when I decided to lift up 2 oxygen tanks at one go. Seemed like a bright idea at first. What a dumb idea it turned out to be.

Stripper Friend

Yesterday, well…let just say sober was more or less oblivious. Yes, it was Tuckday, and well, most of us got wasted…well, almost anyways. 5-6 big bottles of Tiger and a couple (possibly more) of Stout (Orr Kau) and well, there you go: the recipe for a proper night out. OK, maybe it wasn’t that proper, I had soup spilled on my pants (no thanks to Chee Yong aka The Chicken) and sandals and later on some Stout and I think there was some Tiger spilled on me too…I remembered Tuck spilled quite a lot of beer and yet he managed to get high. The night ended with Kevin literally walking back to his house despite the fact that I offered him a ride home…probably because Ian was chasing after him which inspired him to run away. Before he gets even higher and possibly smashed.

And we all learn a little some new that night, our model friend aka Vignesh aka Alleycats Jr. aka The Masturbator is apparently a part-time stripper. Yes, stripper…why? Its easy money and well, ok…dignity has flown off the window for him…(sorry Vig, I had to join the crowd and make fun of you)hahahah. Vig in red latex underpants…HAHHAHAHA, ewwww!!

Note: Yesterday was world AIDS day

The Lefties

Woke up surprisingly fresh today, attended my first morning class this week (first as in made it in time) and well, had a smooth flow of things…ahhhh, what a great day today, despite being so darn hot still.

The shoes are doing alright except for the left foot. Apparently (I just found out today) everyone will have their left foot slightly bigger than their right, its one of those unexplained stuff or natural phenomenon kinda thing…same goes for your palm…darn it! Stupid shoe sales man didn’t take out the left shoe for me to try it on…

I really adore the outcome of my 2nd video assignment (commercial) titled “Visit Penang 2005”. Well, it was a sweet topic given to us in the first place; I’ve always wanted to do something to uphold Penang’s glory and finally it happened…if anyone is still in denial, Penang isn’t exactly as shiny and flashy as it used to be. Once regarded as a rival to Kuala Lumpur now Penang has slumbered off, it’s kinda dirty, the roads are getting more ridiculous and well, it’s getting more packed with people than ever before…heck, there’s a freakin’ traffic jam everyday at lunch time. What’s happening to the Pearl of the Orient?

Note: Sony WEGA commercial shoot has cancelled the outing, darn it! grrr...

12

Is it me or that the weather is unbelievably hot today. So hot that I can feel a sore throat coming up….better start drinking more water. Has anybody noticed? No? It’s December already!! Oh boy…that’s fast; I think this has been the quickest year I’ve had thus far. But it did felt like forever when I was down in KL. Oh well, time to chalk up some new year’s declaration/resolution, quit this, quit that, start this, start that…blah blah…be good be better, yada yada yada…

The countdown is now on, week 7 is on its 3rd day with 2 more to go and taking no prisoners…before the climax of a week-long persistent and harsh presentation also known as; “Week 8”. Ughhhh….

OK, I declare this entry would be my last entry vis-Ă -vis on my assignments. It’s boring to read about it let alone write it…maybe a little say on whole week 8 sometime later on, but other than that, NOTHING! There’s no technicolour element in assignments, its all just black and white…and maybe grey.

In my opinion, spam has taken itself into a whole new level, now they have infiltrated the mobile communication. Does anybody else receive spam on their mobile phone? Or is it just me? Just today I’ve received 3 spam messages about some “super-duper-must-subscribe-now-or-else-ur-phone-will-explode” kinda thing…what next? Penis enlargement and Viagra spam send to our phones? *sigh* they screw up my email, now my phone…

There are four oxygen tanks at the dining area…hmmm; maybe I could get euphoric from taking compressed oxygen…hehehe, “ahhh..assignments…don’t worry….be happy” :)

On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!

Finally, after months/weeks of contemplation, I finally did it…I bought me a pair of Nike’s brand-spanking new Total 90 III indoor football shoe (gold+white) along with a Adidas sling bag that I’ve been yearning for. Get to be in style for the final hurdle…the least you can do is look good and feel good on a time when even combing your hair is a rare luxury because of the lack of time we have left.

Not one day I’ll avoid mentioning the amount of workload we have to accomplish by the end of this week and then later progress to a week-long, relentless, never-ending, nerve-wrecking presentation on the 8th week.

Apart from the chaos and predicament of assignments, things are pretty smooth, so to speak. The only thing now missing would be the daily schedule of football (both indoor and outdoor) that’s still out of sight. Wait till Mr. Simran gets back, should be able to get some footy action going. He either has a strange obsession with his name or just weird football antics. What am I talking about? For those who know him, you’ll never fall short of hearing him shout “Sim’s ball!” or “Simran’s here!” when he is near or on the ball…hahaha. Even with complete strangers, he still shouts out that same line…

Holidays are oh-so-close already…it’s so tempting to start doing nothing (or usual holiday stuff) despite of this entire muddle at this instant. Take a deep breath, collect all thoughts, set your sights on the finish line….and GO! Kinda like when I was young, I had to cycle all the way up to my house after school (on a hot afternoon, wearing those long green pants and the ridiculously heavy bag) on a hill which sometimes feels like it is at a complete 90° angle…It’s all in the past now, *phew*

Things have sure change since my earlier days. :)

Freeze!

Cold cold cold cold…what a cold cold cold Sunday it is. Its rather unusual to have a cool Sunday, seems that my last memory of a cold cold cold Sunday was around 7 years ago when it rained so heavy that there was landslide all over every hill/mountains etc in Penang. Well, we were all stuck and couldn’t get out from the hill. Both paths have been blocked by one landslide after another…so the authority declared an emergency holiday kinda thing as only 6 pupils made it to class. And only 1 was on time, the rest were all hours late. Same goes for basically every school in Penang.

Back to the present day, it’s still raining, but I doubt there will be any repeat of the landslide incident 7 years ago. The only landslide that’ll ever happen would be “an assignment landslide!” arghhh, it’s the freaking and dreaded 7th week! Our last week, the final hurdle, the end! Hmmpf, still got a handful of assignment to straighten out. It’s funny that we go thru this every term/semester, and yet we still get the jitters, the screw ups and late nights…

Have set my sights on an iPod 20GB from Japan, that’ll help me, save roughly around RM200…that means extra cash for RAM! Yesh! (Punches the air, uhh uhh!)

Catch me and some peeps at Georgetown this coming Saturday for a Sony WEGA commercial shoot. Hehehe…

Polaris

I have no idea what went wrong, but obviously somewhere somehow I must have done something quite evil…I declare today (even with a few more hours to spare) as the lousiest day I’ve had in awhile.

Woke up an hour late for class, felt like crap the entire morning thru afternoon. Then when I arrived at work, I had to put up with this ridiculously pointless (and random) conversation with this old dude who seems to have this curiosity in Apple computers and wireless stuff…how ridiculous the conversation was?…Lets put it into perspective:

Old Dude: So can I connect to the internet with this iMac?
Me: Yes you can, may I know the brand of your modem?
Old Dude: Yes, yes…it’s a ADSL modem…
Me: No no, I meant the BRAND of your modem. Aztech? D-Link?
Old dude: Yeah, its very very fast one.
Me: Huh?
Old Dude: Yes, yes, modem.

And that was only one small tiny fraction of the 30minute conversation. You can imagine the rest (don’t bother). And in one scenario, he decided to be mute. What wrong with you???!!!! Arghhh!!!

And he went on about a wireless monitor. What?! How f**k is that gonna happen?! It’ll suck the life out from batteries in like seconds. Then it became more random. *Sigh*

To top it of, I was summoned by this under-cover MPPP dude (just when I’m in bad terms with them, they pop up out of nowhere and issue a summon for littering). Well, ok fair enough, I was at wrong…but where the hell are the ashtrays?

So seriously, could it get any worse?

Lifeless Moving Creatures

A re-union was held last night and then it became apparent, THE YEAR-END IS HERE!! And ughhhh! I got freakin’ assignments to do! *sigh*

Presumably, I was suppose to get my ass to class this morning and well, one thing led to another and it was 12pm when my eyes first opened today. Ack! Again! I miss a morning class! Focus! Focus!

My parents are starting to freak me out at times, just the other day they told me the bought 2 more fishes…right, ok…fish. Nothing wrong with that. Well, they left one part out and I came back and saw 2 more fishes on the tank and went “There’s thousands of different species of fresh water fish in this world, hundreds of choices at the shop, and you guys settled for PLASTIC FISHES?!” Arghhh, it’s so creepy, having fake fishes moving around the tank and they’re in bright blue and yellow!

Green & Slightly Smaller Than A4

Embarrassing enough, I tried on some good old HTML scripting and failed miserably. Alignment was horrible and the padding was just wide off the mark. So I’m still stuck with this somewhat conventional page that is shared by some few billion people around the world. I’ll be back! I can’t stand being…errr….Bah! I can’t find the words; I just want a blog that’s different! Unique! Hehehe…

Supposedly, one of the biggest visitor/reader of this blog, Audrey has finally decided (after weeks of persuasion) to create her own blog! Hehehe, now I got a fellow blog-mate :) I’ve added her link at this site, go check it out…I’ll help her out to do some editing with her blog site later on.

I got a ticket for parking at a dead-end today, can you believe that?! This is ludicrous! Why would it be an offence? It states “Meletak Kereta Di Luar Kawasan Letak Kereta” which translates into “Parking Your Car Outside The Parking Area”. OK, I’ll admit, it wasn’t exactly an official parking spot but common sense would tell you that what harm could I do? The only possible offence I can think of would be blocking God’s path back to this small little shrine at the end of that dead-end (Sorry God, I don’t mean to offend). If it’s ‘blocking traffic’ your talking about…this spot is like 10-15 meters off the street, it’s a dead-end for god's sake! (sorry again!) At the end of it is a shrine on the left side while the grass are as tall as me…maybe there’s some sort of super hero hideout there…hmmm Keluang Man kinda thing, hehehhe...

Note: I tried to find a link for Keluang Man but failed, it's just a ridiculous Malaysian rip off of Batman, and he wears a sock as a mask while his suit is pink, it’s suppose to be a national joke. It was quite a hit.

An Exit With A Bang!

Weekends these days has turned into a rare luxury. I find myself doing nothing even though there are tons of assignments that need to be accomplished. I need a motivational speech from someone now!

Tomorrow will officially be the 6th week of our academic term before reaching the pinnacle point that I like to call “The 8th Week Scuttle” where somehow we’ll be plagued by sleepless nights, long hours and of course the ever popular; mystery failures. Yeah, mystery failures; that’s everyone’s biggest nightmare and foe and yet somehow, no matter how cautious you have been throughout the term/semester, by hook or by crook you’ll find some sort of malfunction either on our computer or design (in some cases, both) when its at the closing stages.

It has happened one to many times for the people I know, including myself. Just as recent as last semester, in an unusual circumstance, I was actually ahead of schedule with my assignments with a couple of weeks to spare when out of the blue my old computer’s motherboard decided to heat up and became ultimately roasted. Yes, it was roasted. How? I don’t know. So you see, it’s not the issue of being lazy and leaving everything at the last minute, things just f**k up. Just 2 weeks back when I unexpectedly got highly motivated, I completed a huge chunk of my assignments when suddenly…..*yes, you’ve guessed it!* the computer decided to go *koo-koo* for no obvious reason, and this is a new system. It’s not even a year old yet. Apparently, nobody has been able to ‘blue-screened’ an XP before, but I’ve done it like a billion times already. “XP: The Mother of All F**k Ups”, unless you have a mysterious obsession with reformatting.

So now, I do all my assignments on my iBook. Let’s see if I could crash an OS X, or even better…blue screened it. :)

Most peculiar scenario was when the light bulb directly above my head (no, it’s not those light bulbs that pops out when you have an idea) blow up and crash land on my crotch while I was sitting at my computer desk finishing my assignments at 3AM. Blimey!

Recommended

It has been a long day today and finally got my first sale going. No I didn’t sell any computers today, but I did manage to sway this Scottish couple to go for the iPod 20GB rather than the iPod mini which is at 4GB, yay! Despite some afternoon war of words and arguments about the graduation concept, the day progressed well as the semester is almost at its climax. Heck, the Scottish couple bought a 20GB iPod for their 6 year old daughter! Ack! All I got when I was 6 was some Thundercats action figure.

Getting a hang of all this sales thingy and I might actually be good at it someday (soon, I hope…I have a sales target to meet in 2 weeks) so I could apply this additional skill to sell my designs. What’s really amusing is that we’ll never fail to give our customers a bolt in the blue with the new iMac G5’s built-in CPU. Serious! In fact, I surprised 3 customers with it today.

Customer: Nice eh. So, where’s the CPU?

Me: Where’s the CPU? Hmmm *points at the speakers*

Me: Nope, that’s not it…you’re actually looking at it!! *turns the iMac around*

Customer: Wahhhhhhhhh!!!! Fantastic! Out of this world! *enormous smile*

And then I’ll start to point where every thing is. (CD/DVD Slot, USB etc…) Then after the enlightenment, it’ll usually end up with “I’ll get back to you…” *sigh*

A fellow colleague has taught me a few new tricks and also how to upgrade the iBook myself! Goodness me, its effortless…who would have thought it’ll be that easy upgrading a laptop on your own. Heh heh heh, 516MB RAM here I come!

But now, I have to work from Mondays to Fridays…*sigh*

Peace out, need to wake up early for a video shoot tomorrow…can’t even rest during the weekends, ouch…

Up And Running

After spending the entire day fixing and reinstalling everything in my PC, finally its up and running again…still wondering what the hell happened in the first place. Ok, it wouldn’t have taken the whole day if it wasn’t for my files that I want to backup. So it took me a couple of hours to decide which files I should keep and which I shouldn’t and then burn those that I need onto a CD. Phewwww, glad that’s all over.

Was delayed a bit as well when suddenly my parents decided to do a little spring cleaning, what the heck? Chinese New Year is still months away…I found out at the end that my parents had bought a spanking new freezer. It did come across my mind, “Why do we need 3 fridges?” my enquires was answered….they’re replacing the old one on the balcony…the old one is more of a microwave rather than a freezer, so it’s time to change. We want to store our meat! Not cook ‘em! Sorry Chi Tuck, you can’t seat on it anymore, this one is not metal…if he did, and breaks it, I’ll probably kill him and store him inside that freezer, hahehhah…perfect fit!

The Raya holidays are almost over and it’s back to classes tomorrow. *Sigh* just when you get used to this ‘freedom’, suddenly it’s over.

A quick update on the ‘Neighbour Wars’ saga that has been going on…the same neighbour that had her house flooded few days back, now her car is vandalized. Hahahha, some joker splash acid on the roof of her Volvo S80 and now the paint it all f**ked, it looks like someone puked on it, yucks…and I just rained! Yet another double whammy, ouch…

Note: I think it’s week 5 already…ARFHH Club is now at full swing.

No! We Don't Sell Mobile Phones!

A sudden discovery of peace and serenity in the midst of all this assignment/project related chaos. Ok, seriously…my comp f**ked on me again and it nearly cost me everything. Yes, I mean everything…every single important data I’ve kept since the start of my course back in 2002 was nearly lost. Thankfully for some computer geek friends and my own geekiness, I managed to somehow get back into the OS and dig everything out and dump it in my 3rd backup drive. That was 3-5 days ago and till now, the comp is still unusable. It happened prior to the Raya holidays so now I have decided that I’m gonna take a break. Go chill with some gear and Korean jinro my dad brought back.

I’m actually writing this at work, this is my 3rd day and well…can’t complain. Not as glamorous as the one in Gurney, but hey! It’s work, with work comes money, and with money comes the eagerly anticipated CD changer I’ve promised myself. First time writting this with my mac too.

It’ll be a bad idea to get out today with this incredible traffic jam going on outside. Took me an hour to get to work when it should have only been 15 minutes. Yikes!

For some mysterious reason, people tend to think our shop is a mobile phone ringtone seller or something… “boleh letak lagu kat phone ini ah?” what the heck…there’s no excuse for being unable to see the “Apple” text and logo. I think we end up giving people directions more than doing any sort of sales. *Sigh*

Ai Ai Capt'n

Good evening, to start off this entry, I’ll update you guys with the on-going ‘Neighbour Wars’. A quick fact, there’s actually 2 ‘Neighbour Wars’ going on, between us and our underground neighbour and the neighbours next to us (same scenario: ground floor vs underground floor). So the situation was like this, someone used her water hose and direct it into her front door and then turn the tap on, hence a massive flood (also the fact she occupies the under level, double whammy!) and so the stage was set for what would seem like a climax to this unending feud that has been raging for 4-5 years. But somehow, she and her gangster boyfriend managed to calm themselves down, or at least in public eyes and stay cool. Damn! No show to watch, *sigh* I can’t imagine any reality TV show is as good as this…apart from last night, which was a disappointment.

Tomorrow is a public holiday with thanks to Deepavali for giving us a much needed break! Hehehe, and also the upcoming Raya holidays, phew….

Have just completed my CIS stationary set and will start working on the other 6+6 major and minor items…don’t understand? Trust me, you don’t want to.

It has been a long day, and since tomorrow is a holiday, I’m off to complete as much assignments as I can and get out from the house, have been cooped up at home for days already…except for yesterday…I did something yesterday, but can’t really remember…hmmm

“A day is a miniature eternity” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

A gorgeous rainbow emerges after the evening showers. How could anyone not find serenity upon the sight of one? Ahhhhh…..(sigh of relief)

view from my house

P/S: I finally figured out what Felujah means, it’s a freakin’ state in Iraq! When I heard on TV I was like “Hah!!” and a tirade of flying rice particles came out from my mouth (was having dinner, parents thought I choked, then they remembered I’m not your standard 21 yr old).

Happy Deepavali!

Round 1, Fight!

Made my XP looked like an OS X! Wohoooooo…I’ve added or modified the ‘comments’ section because the original requires you to be a blogger.com member, how ridiculous!

A lil update on the on going “Neighbour Wars” and finally some fortune on our side, now they have one month to tear down the extension they did or face the consequence (which is a court case and a hostile entry by the council people). Wow, this is getting a bit out of hand, well…they started it, and they only have themselves to blame! Too bad for them. Incase anyone’s interested; it’ll all started when they first moved in. So there it was, they’re house along with a billion thousand flyers scattered all over within their front door. So naturally, anyone will know the correct thing to do would be cleaning up that mess and clean up they did via trashing all of them (yes I mean all them flyers) to our side of the house, what bloody wankers would do that?! Where’s this thing called; common decency? Goodness me. So we had no choice but to retaliate (hey! I ain’t cleaning his mess!), so what I did was I gathered some brooms and summon my sis and off we go and sweep every single one of them back into their house (some leafs and extra trash was added as a sign of gesture) along with a nice lil note saying: “KEEP YOUR GODDAMN TRASH TO YOUR GODDAMN SELF! Sincerely, your neighbour.” And so it begins; the unnecessary war. What a bunch of pricks! Haven’t they heard the expression: “Love thy neighbour”? *Sigh*

Work will start this Friday and I hope I can finish off the video shoot on Saturday and proceed to editing as soon as possible. Running out of time with 3 more weeks left. Argh!

Action Hero

ARFHH” club is now in session, incase you’re wondering, it’s a club me and my classmates create to signal that we’re running out of time and that we should buck up and hurry our assignments/projects. Since we’re on our 4th week now, and had done squat! (well, maybe not nothing completely) and with 3 more weeks to go, it seems like a daunting task to get it all done. Argh!

My job was postponed today due to several reasons; one of them was that they didn’t call me and also the fact that I had to attend this meeting regarding our graduation exhibition in April 2005 entitled; Version 5 or 5th Version …. Something like that. Since I’m the head-photographer (so it seems apparently since nobody else seems to bother or do anything) I have to schedule a photo shoot date to shoot 64 x 4 = 256 headshots and then painstakingly compile them and convert each graduate’s headshots into the CMYK format, which means each graduate will have 4 different headshots and each of them will be in single colour of cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Hence the nickname ‘Action Hero’ which was given to me ‘cause I seem to have this obsession to make something different. Hey, I’m a designer! Or soon to be….I have to stand out! Ughhh, no time…no time

Speaking of time, we got sooo bored today in class and since everybody had already left while the few of us had to wait for the meeting, we re-organized our classroom’s table placement, now its more our style! Heh heh heh uhhhhhh……I need a life…*sigh*

To those who read this and not an Equator Academy student, you’re invited to attend our upcoming graduation exhibition in April 2005.

Note: Work is much more fun than fun.

Faded

The phone rang really, really late last night and to my surprise, a small stash of gear was available. Had yet another good session though it was almost 4am already and I had to go. When will this draught end, eh?

Something has been bothering me this last few days, tried to put it aside but it just doesn’t seem to work, *sigh*. I need a therapist. Don’t want this psoriasis to resurface. Why am I cursed with this revolting defect?!

Tomorrow will be my first day with CG Computers, hope all goes well. Been having second thoughts about this job though, come to think of it, I don’t really have that much time at my disposal with the preposterous load of assignments/projects that’s breathing down my neck but I need the money, wasn’t blessed with rich parents. But I guess that builts character. I’m in need of one.

I hope it’s true.

Work & Play

Had an extremely long interview with Mr. CG himself (owner of CG Computers aka AppleCentre) about my job application, and wow….shit, I know squat about Apple Computers! Ughhhh, but they’ll be teaching me about all this technical aspect that I’ll need to know…he went on about how to complete a sales transaction (credit card verification, cheque and so on, phewww…confusing sial) but anyways, I’ve been accepted and will start on Monday and will be placed in Prangin (they’ll pay for my parking! Yay!). So I guess it all works out, in the end.

Since KLue, I’ve noticed my music’s perspective has changed vividly. More reasons to quicken the process of saving up and buying a CD changer for my car….and maybe an iPod since I’m working there, hmmmmmmmmmm..we’ll see…. (Oh, forgot to mention this; “this would go really well with my iBook!”)

Today is the official opening day for Equator Academy of Art’s follow up to last year’s successful “Halloween Party 03” entitled “Playground” (what the f**k?? playground?? What sort of sissy name is that?). Frankly, I do think that it’ll fail, judging by the fact that Halloween 03 was a run-away success, picture this, it was raining from the start of the party towards the end and yet more than 3000 attendees came on that night alone even though we only had like 1000 tickets…sold out 3x man, hahahha. We had a better poster too back then compared to the really offensively ugly poster they came up with for Playground…it’s supposed to be scary! Not decent-soft-edged-teddy-bear-i-wanna-hug-you-and-kiss-you style man. God!! But for the sake of the SRC committee and some friends who are still in it, I wish them all the best. Good luck!

Have a nice weekend…

Anatomy of Penang Drivers

After weeks of waiting…and waiting, finally CG Computers (AppleStore) gives me a ring regarding my job application. They seem to like me (hurray! Go me!) as I can speak really well (kinda surprised myself, they called me while I was sleeping). But the down side is (also worst nightmare/scenario) that chances are I’ll be located at Prangin Mall (yucks!) since the store in Gurney isn’t as productive as the one in Prangin and also the fact that it is the official ‘training’ centre for new workers, sigh. I tried and voiced out my opinion on how I would prefer to be at Gurney. But, hey! They’re the boss, guess I don’t have a say in this, hmmmpf, besides I really need this job…so I guess I’ll just get use to it (argh! No free parking!). Working life sucks…

Futsal plan didn’t go according to plan, infact, it was cancelled the minute the previous blog was published…hahahha, sad case man.

Finally I have my CIS (Corporate Identity System) logo out, maybe not finalized just yet, but its 90% done…phewww…gosh, have been spending weeks on this design.

Here’s another say from me about the drivers in Penang. We drivers here do not know the meaning or the function of a brake unless in a traffic light situation (not all the time). Serious! Countless amounts accidents could have occurred but being the Penang drivers that we are, we usually escape with nothing but a fist the air and flicking the middle finger at the other driver. For instance, let’s say this car is coming out from a parking space, he/she didn’t check his side or rear mirrors before entering the road, an incoming car comes by. The correct thing to do would be slowing down or brake allowing him/her to get out. In Penang, we’ll drive faster making sure we’ll zoom pass before he/she gets out while honking ridiculously loud and hard at the driver and then go “Hoooi! Che meh ah?” and then flick the middle finger at him/her and go “Nahhhhhhhh!!”. (Translation: Hoi! Blind ah?). Tell me that’s not true? Tell me! Hehehe. I have to admit, I do that sometimes…but only because I’m already late for class!

Go Penang!

Midnite Samba

Went on a brief shopping spree today to get some ‘utilities’ to complete (or completing) my mission in making my life (ok…too dramatic, my comp desk, to be precise) organized. And organized I am now! Hurray!

Tonight we’ll attempt to organize a second futsal session and this time, we want freakin’ 11pm dammit! 12midnight is just too damn late!

Eugene aka Captain Gan has apparently been involved in some sort of dramatic entanglement with some friends and friends’ relative which results in some nasty encounter at some club recently, perhaps this might help him to cheer him up a little and maybe later on introduce him to ‘gear’ hehehehe, he admit it himself that it’s time to give it a try! Hehehehe…pothead!

He seems to have this “Please beat the sh*t out of me!” sticker on his forehead, whatever he does (or in some cases, nothing) he’ll have people coming up to him to either beat him silly or threaten to beat him silly. There was this situation once, this guy come up to him after having bought some food, and said (in hokkien) “Siong hammik lanciao? Gien tiok pak hor?” then walks away in typical canto-pop-wind-gushing-thru-his-hair style which means, “what the f**k you staring at? Wanna get beat up?” even though he didn’t even look at the guy for the obvious reason of him sitting facing at the opposite direction. Poor guy.

Today’s the 3rd week of class already and yet I have done absolutely nothing (well, not literally). Just need that extra bit of spark to get it going, still waiting…still waiting…

Note: There’s only one variation of USB! Not round not triangle not whatever! It’s a flat rectangular head (refer to pendrive, if you own one). Sheeesh, some people just don’t get it…giving me false hopes. Selling off my USB Aztech 100U Turbo DSL modem for RM130, interested? Hehehehe…

Peace
