Can we help a brother out?

My friend John over at Rejected Realities is undergoing gastric bypass surgery on Monday.  His insurance company is covering the cost of the surgery, but he is needing help covering the co-pay of $1,500.

Normally I would just donate to the cause and be done with it.  But in this case I really identify with John's weight loss struggle and I want to do everything I can to help him raise the money.  Please consider even a small donation to help him out.

Big hugs,
Robert

You can get to the donations page through this link.... John's GoFundMe Page

Sunday Selfie

I like this photo. Kinda makes me look Bad-Ass.  :-)

Today I had the opportunity to get out and mow the yard.  It's been a few weeks since I've mowed and it needed it.  Plus with the chilly weather moving in, the leaves are falling and I prefer to mulch them using the lawn mower.

My Mom and Matt's Dad are over today for dinner.  Matt's Dad was helping clear a good bit of brush and limbs from the yard. He has a farmhouse and is able to burn the stuff out at his place.

Tonight I have volleyball, LATE volleyball (8:20 and 9:10 - yikes!).  Gonna be interesting to see me play and then get up early tomorrow for my Monday morning workout.  But I have been finding that my body seems to be "craving" exercise. I'm actually getting to the point where I look forward to going to the gym.

TMI Tuesday - Does Size Matter?

Sean is it that time of the week already?  I do love these questionnaires, they're cheaper than therapy.

DOES SIZE MATTER?

  1. How big is your TV screen?

It's a 36" flat panel screen, but originally we were going to get a 32". I guess we knew that bigger in this case was definitely better. :-)

  2. How big is your hard drive? Laptop or desktop?

We have both a desktop and a laptop.  The iMac desktop has a 2GB hard drive, of course the computer was purchased in 2007. My MacBook Pro has a 4GB hard drive.  I covet a new desktop with a 1 or 2 TB drive. :-)

  3. How big is your home? Is it too big or too small?

Our home is about 1,800 square feet, and it was too small about 6 months after we moved in! We'd like to move into a larger place, but that will have to wait a year or two.

  4. How big is your waistline? Is it too big or too small?

About 38 inches, and yes, it's way too big.  Ideally I'd like it to be around 34.

  5. How big are your pets?

Since I'm allergic to just about everything, we don't have any pets. Plus, we're kinda selfish about our time and

  6. How big is your car?

I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic. It seats 5 if need be and I feel like it's big enough. I would like to upgrade to a larger vehicle in the future.

  7. How big are your biceps?

I have biceps?  I think they're hidden somewhere under my blubber.

  8. How big is your ego?

Not very big. I feel like I'm more humble than egotistical.

  9. Who's currently the biggest ass?

I'm gonna have to go with anyone who's a Republican politician.

10. Who's currently the biggest looser?

Easy - Ted Cruz. I'm honestly amazed how a 1st year senator can pretty much be the face of the GOPs effort to shut down the government.

11. How big is your bank account?

Not near big enough!  LOL

BONUS
You knew it was coming. How big is your sexual organ and is it big enough? How do you like your partner to be sized? Can it be too big/small? Does size really matter?

It's big enough. I like a partner's to be "manageable".  Yes on both accounts.  No, it's not the size of the tool, it's how it's used. :-)

Birthday 42

So today I turned the Big 4-2 (just like my good friend Shane did a few days back). It was a pretty uneventful day - I took cookies in for my students, bought doughnuts for my coworkers, and got taken out to dinner.

Tomorrow morning it's back to the gym to continue working on me. I haven't had a chance to blog that much during the past week, but I'm hoping to rectify that in the next few days.

And now I'm off to prep my stuff for tomorrow (I do love to iron) and maybe watch a "Cougar Town" rerun.

Yup.  That's how I roll. :-)

Sunday Selfie

Not my best selfie. Not my best day.

I've spent today trying to get caught up on school paperwork (i.e. grading) and that didn't go very well. Sigh.

Tonight was rec league volleyball and it didn't go well. My team is playing in a division that is above where we should be playing. The teams we are playing against are really good - really, REALLY good and well, we aren't. Tonight I got frustrated and ended up "barking" at a couple of teammates. I felt bad afterwards and did apologize, but I felt like the damage was done.

I'm tired and looking forward to a good night's sleep. Tomorrow the plan is to wake up early and hit the gym. Hopefully it will be a good week.

Spirit Day, Part 2

Both Matt and I wore purple today in support of Spirit Day.

My day was quite an experience. Yesterday I had mass emailed our school encouraged them to wear purple for Spirit Day. I honestly had no idea what the response would be as it was kind of late in the day when I sent it. I was pleasantly surprised when a good number of my co-workers were wearing purple, including our principal. :-)

During each of my classes I explained why I, along with other teachers, were wearing purple. This also gave me a chance to share a bit of why Spirit Day was personally important to me.  While I wasn't a kid who was bullied because I was gay, it still hurt to hear the words "fag" and "queer" used in a derogatory manner.

I emphasized that I want our school to be a safe place for ALL students. I truly felt like I connected with the kids and they got to know a part of me that they may not have known.

All in all, it was a good day.

Spirit Day 2013

Today is Spirit Day, a chance to show support for LGBT youth by wearing purple. I'll be wearing purple in my classroom (pictures will be posted later). In addition, I sent out an email to all of our staff at the school encouraging them to wear purple as well. I'm hopeful to see my coworkers supporting the cause as well.

A Spirit Day memory that stands out for me is the very first day back in 2010.

One of our very best friends was on the Iowa State Women's Basketball team. On Spirit Day 2010, she was attending the Big XII Media Day. I watched a video of her interview and noticed that she was wearing a purple sweater.  The following is a transcript of my text conversation with her.

Me:   Hey there. Great interview tonight.

Her:  Thanks. :-)

Me:  I noticed you were wearing a purple sweater.

Her:   Mmmhmm.

Me:  Do you know what day it is?

Her:   Yup. Spirit Day. :-)

Me:  I love you.

Her:  I love you too.

I had absolutely no idea that she was going to do that and couldn't have been prouder.

TMI Tuesday - Randomness

As always, a special thanks to Sean at Just A Jeep Guy for posting this week's questions.

RANDOMNESS

1: Could you go the rest of your life without smoking a cigarette?

Absolutely! I've never smoked and never will smoke. Honestly, I find a guy's attractiveness goes way down if I find out he's a smoker.

2: Are you single/taken/heartbroken/confused?

Taken. I've been married for 3 years, but we've actually been together for 18 years. We met the old-fashioned way - newspaper personal ad.

3: What if I told you that you were handsome/pretty?

I'd be very flattered. I don't personally think of myself as handsome.

4: Ever been told “it’s not you, it’s me”?

Not in so many words, but yeah, I've been told that.

5: Are you interested in anyone right now?

Other than my husband - um, well, I do like to look. But of course, he does too. I'm married, not dead.

6: What are you looking forward to in the next week?

I turn 42 in a week, so I guess I'm looking forward to that.

7: Do you want to be single/married/in a relationship?

I'm very happy being married, but there are times when I miss being single. I met Matt not too long after coming out and I sometimes wish I had more of a "sowing my oats" phase.

8: Have you pretended to like someone?

Haven't we all?

9: Have you ever told somebody you loved them and not actually meant it?

No. To me that's one of the worst things you can do.

BONUS
Are you better at giving oral sex or receiving oral sex??

I really like to receive, but I'm good at giving as well.  :-)

Sunday Selfie - The Weekend That Was

Today's selfie was taken just before my rec league volleyball match. It's been a scruffy kinda weekend.
Friday night was full of soccer and gays.  LOL  I met a friend of mine to watch the US Men's National Team beat Jamaica 2-0. Then it was off to a "gay guy" dinner that an acquaintance throws once a month. It's a chance for the gay community in Ames to gather for food and drink.  It can be enjoyable, but at the same time a reminder that I often find myself the square peg trying to fit in the round hole of the gay community (insert inappropriate comment here).

Saturday featured a quick trip to the gym and an afternoon of college football.  We ventured over to Hilton Coliseum to see the ISU volleyball team defeat West Virginia 3-0. Dinner followed at our local Japanese restaurant where I partook in a little sushi eating (the leftovers this morning were delicious).
Today has been all about getting schoolwork done (grading papers, lesson plans, etc) with a break in-between for volleyball. We lost both matches and I didn't feel like I played particularly well.

But tomorrow is another day. Time to get busy and get ready for it.  :-]

5000!

I just hit my 5,000th page view!

Thank You to everyone who has checked out my little slice of the internet. It seems like just a few weeks ago that I hit 2,500. I'm truly grateful to all my readers and if you like my blog, please add it to your blog roll.

And since it's an NFL Sunday, here's a little Jason Witten to get me excited. Teehee

Trying Something New

This week I tried something new - and I liked it. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I got up early and went to the gym BEFORE I went to work.

This required some planning on my part as I had to get my stuff together the night before. The next morning all I would have to do is throw on my workout clothes and brush my teeth (no one wants to workout with fuzzy teeth).

Not Me - But maybe in the future.
Waking up a little before 6, I dressed and headed out. My goal this week was simply to get there and do something. The elliptical machine called my names and I completed 3 35-minute workouts. I have to say, it felt really good getting my exercise in early. The physical activity woke me up and that clarity that I had previously blogged about returned each time.

I'm confident that this is going to become a habit and that my overall health will continue to improve. My next hurdle is my diet. But that's another post, for another time.

Have a great weekend!

I'll Take "15 Minutes" for $1,200 Alex - Part 7

Sorry about the delay...

(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6)

The next morning I showed up in the hotel lobby again, but this time knowing what to expect. There were the "newbies" along with Steve (the champ), Glenn and me. I have to say that a little success seemed to go to Steve's head (winning 5 straight shows might be the reason) - he showed up wearing the dark sunglasses and was very standoff-ish. Glenn and I on the other hand were very chatty with the new kids, giving them a heads up on what to expect.

Now I have to say, having been through the process the day before was immensely helpful. I was much more relaxed and at ease. Sure, I was still nervous, but it wasn't as scary this day. While everyone else was Maggie was going over all the paperwork with the newbies, we vets kicked back and relaxed. I actually partook of the free food they had laid out (none of us touched it the day before.... nerves).

After paperwork and practices, it was time for the first episode for which Glenn was picked. I got to wait a bit longer. Steve went into Final Jeopardy in the lead, but thanks to a "Holy Places" final category, Glenn (a part time minister) stole the win!  Steve had been defeated - whew! I was kinda grateful that I wasn't picked for that episode as the categories really weren't my forte - "Dinosaurs", "Aztec Gods", "Famous Couples", "Authors", and "Grammar" just to name a few.

As the production on the first episode was wrapping up, one of the coordinators came out and announced the next two challengers, Jocelyn and me. Gulp.  We went back for touchups on our makeup and then to get set.

Have you ever noticed that all the contestants on Jeopardy! look to be the same height? Don't believe it. To make it easier on the camera that films the contestants, they level us off using boxes. Glenn didn't need to stand on one since he was the tallest, but I had to stand on one to increase my height. Think about that next time you watch the show.

It was time. The music starts and Johnny Olsen says, "THIS IS JEOPARDY!". Alex comes out and announces the categories - "Colorado Dreaming", "Photographers", "I'll Have the Beef", "Anagrammed Cabinet Departments", "James Bond" and "00-7 Letter Words". Glenn selects the first clue and we're off. I started off a little slow, but once I got the hang of the signaling device, I was off. At the commercial break, I was in third place, but feeling good.

Me and my good friend Alex.
During the interview segment, Alex asked about the eyebrows and I shared my story - on national tv. LOL  Telling that story actually helped put me a little more at ease and I overtook my opponents and started to build a lead. At the end of the "Jeopardy!" round, I was in the lead with $7,400.

"Double Jeopardy!" starts and the categories - "Medicine", "1970's Albums", "A 'Little' Lit", "A Boy Named Sue, et al", "Archduke University" and "Word & Phrase Origins".  Honestly I don't remember what actually happened when the game got going, I went into "tunnel vision" where all I could really focus on was the board. Evidently I got on a hot streak. I found a "Daily Double" in the medicine category and I was up by quite a bit.

Going into "Final Jeopardy!" I had an insurmountable lead, up $24,000 to $10,800 on second place. Unless I pulled a Cliff Clavin, I was going to win. The "Final Jeopardy!" category was "The Stock Market". I was so nervous that I just wrote $1,000 as my wager. I knew I could lose that and still finish in first place.

The Final question - "In 2006 this Milwaukee-based co. announced it's new stock symbol, "HOG", at a gathering in Sturgis, SD." I knew the answer immediately - Milwaukee, HOG, Sturgis, it could only mean one company - Harley Davidson.  All three of us got the correct answer.

Robert - Jeopardy Champion - $25,000.

Here's a link to my episode questions on J-Archive

I didn't have long to savor my victory. They rushed my back to the contestants room to change clothes and get my makeup touched up. Maggie did find Matt in the audience and told him that it was okay for him to breathe again. I love that woman. :-)

The next episode didn't go as well. In my first show I got categories that played to my strengths, not so much in the next show. "The Jeopardy! gods giveth, and the Jeopardy! gods taketh away." While I was leading going into "Final Jeopardy!", I missed the question and finished in third place - still good for another $1,000, for a grand total of $26,000.

Matt asked me how I was after I had been defeated. My response was that I felt great and that I was a Jeopardy! Champion. I knew in my heart that was something that would never be taken away from me.

One person I haven't mentioned is Alex. Contestants don't really get to interact with him all that much, but he is incredibly professional and very gracious when dealing with the public.  He does a Q&A with the audience and answers every question as if it's the first time he's ever been asked. And if he makes a mistake during the taping, he just fixes the audio during one of the breaks. The man in absolutely not a diva (unlike other hosts I've heard of).

So I was now done with the taping.  My episodes wouldn't air for another 2 months. The hard part now was keeping the results under wraps. :-)

Coming soon - The Epilogue.

TMI Tuesday - Music Makes The People Come Together

Thanks again to Sean for posting this week's questions.

1. How often and where do you listen to music?

I listen to music all the time.  I think it started when I was a baby - my Mom would leave a radio in my crib and I was hooked. I also have a talent for remembering song lyrics, which came in VERY handy when I worked at a music store (remember those).

Primarily I listen to music in my car, at the gym and at my school desk. In the car I listen to both pop and country. I drive a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu, so I don't have Sirius, but I'm so gonna have it in my next car. At my school desk I listen to Pandora, my Swing Out Sister station. I find it keeps me calm when the day gets hectic. At the gym, it's high energy dance music - heavy on the Rihanna, David Guetta and Calvin Harris. But I am always looking for new stuff to add to the mix.

2. When was the last time you bought music in CD format?

I honestly can't remember the last CD I bought which is funny because I used to buy CDs all the time. Back in the day I worked for Musicland / Sam Goody and got a pretty decent discount on purchases. There's just really not that much new music that I need to go out and purchase.

3. Do you buy complete albums or just a song at a time? Is this different now because of iTunes?

I used to have a rule where I had to like 3 songs on an album before I would buy it, unless it was an artist who's trust had been earned - (John Mayer, Swing Out Sister, Basia, etc). Then came iTunes and now it's just easier to buy songs that I like.

4. From who do you purchase your digital music?

All hail iTunes.

5. Do you listen to satellite or internet radio? How about Podcasts?

As I said before, I listen to Pandora at work, although for some reason it thinks I'm a huge fan of Hall & Oates. I likes that I can say whether I prefer a song or not and that it learns from my likes. I really want Sirius radio in my car simply for the choices. In central Iowa, we pretty much are controlled by Clear Channel, so there's not that much choice in what gets played on the radio.

6. What are your favorite kinds of music?

When I worked for Musicland, I was in charge of hiring people for the store. Instead of asking what type of music candidates enjoyed listening to (they ALWAYS say "I like all kinds of music"), I asked them if they were stranded on a desert island, what three CDs would they want with them.

My choices - John Mayer - "Room For Squares", Original London Cast - "Les Miserables" and Swing Out Sister - "Somewhere Deep In The Night"

7. Today's music_____!

Is fairly generic.  I miss the good ol 80s. Sigh.

8. What music is you guilty pleasure?

I love 70s soft rock - Ambrosia, Atlanta Rhythm Section, America, Kenny Loggins, Fleetwood Mac. I can sing along word-for-word with some of the most obscure songs. And I love every minute of it. :-)

9. Have you heard a song recently that reminds you of someone?

Every time I hear the song "Royals" by Lorde I can't help but think of my old school district. Our school mascot was the Royals and from 10 years in the district I'll always think of myself as a Royal.
BONUS
Do you play music to set the mood? Nah. It's a little distracting when I start lip-syncing during foreplay. LOL

Once it's set, what do you play to keep the action moving?

Sunday Selfie - October 6th

Getting this done a little late today as it's been a bit busy. Today's selfie was taken just after getting back from rec league volleyball. We lost all 6 games tonight, but I had a BLOCK! I have the vertical leap of all about 6 inches, but somehow, I got up and blocked a pretty good kill attempt.  My entire team was stunned as was I.

Now it's time to start getting ready for the week ahead. Tomorrow we have a professional development day - no kids. I'm also going to try something new. You'll just have to wait and find out what it is. ;-)

Best wishes for the week!
Robert

My Outstanding College Reunion

Last weekend I attended my 20 year college class reunion. It was truly an amazing visit home and one that I needed very much. Matt skipped this trip as he wanted me to just go and have fun and not worry about him being a "third-wheel". I do love that man.

I graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Huntingdon is a small, Methodist-affiliated college on a beautiful 58 acre campus. It truly looks like a college should and I can't imagine having gone anywhere else.

My "Hubba Bubba"
I'll admit, I was nervous about making the trip back. I wasn't "out" in college and in many ways I was pretty immature. I didn't know who I was as a person.  Twenty years later, would those same insecurities reappear?  Would I revert to that same person that I was?  Gulp.

Taking Friday off from school, I flew down to Birmingham (the closest Southwest destination). I was fortunate that during the flight from Des Moines to Chicago I got to sit next to, and chat with, a very good looking gentleman. He was a muscle daddy type. Sure, he is married and has three kids, but it sure made the flight a lot more enjoyable. Plus he introduced me to an amazing chorizo and egg burrito at one of the Midway food court restaurants. Lightning almost struck a second time on the flight to Birmingham as there was a really hot Auburn fan on the plane, but alas, he sat in the row in front of mine. I affectionately referred to him as my "Hubba Bubba".

Huntingdon:
Fair College on the Plain
Being back in Alabama felt good. The blue skies, the pine trees, the bad drivers. Yeah, this felt right. My drive to Montgomery was a quick 80 minutes and then on to the Huntingdon campus. The campus was just as beautiful as I had remembered. I spent the next two hours wandering and reminiscing. It all felt so familiar and comforting. What impressed me even more was how polite the students on campus were! One young lady even stopped to ask me if she could help me find anything. I was touched.

Me, Tree, Jodi and Craig - Class of 93 Awesomeness
I checked into my hotel and freshened up. I have to say how impressed I was with downtown Montgomery. Back in my college days, downtown was not somewhere you wanted to be after dark. Now it's been redeveloped and is a place to be. Oh how things have changed.

The plan was to meet for drinks with Craig, Tree and Jodi - three class friends, whom I was very excited to see. It had been 20 years since I had seen them last. I couldn't wait to see them, yet my heart was beating a mile a minute. I had no reason to worry. Seeing the three of them brought back a lot of great memories and falling back into our friendships was so easy. It was so..... comfortable. We spent the next two hours catching up and sharing a lot of laughs.

One thing that stuck out in my mind was the comment that was made about how much I had changed. I knew exactly what was meant by that.  In college I wasn't comfortable in my own skin. I was gay in the south in the early 90s. I was so worried about being "found out" that I couldn't really be myself.  This weekend, after 20 years of living, I was able to be "me". Being out and maturity certainly go a long way.

From there it was off to see other classmates at various drinking establishments (the weekend was filled with alcohol). We ended up back at the hotel having the most AMAZING Domino's Pizza. Well, with the amount of alcohol consumed, anything would have tasted that good.  :-)

Gameday!
The next day was the official Homecoming football game and celebration. When I was at Huntingdon, we didn't have a football team. Now the school has a great team and a pretty cool Homecoming weekend. The alumni event served incredible barbecue and was very relaxed and laid back. More of the Class of 93 arrived and more memories were shared. The game ended up being a blowout with Huntingdon winning big. We ended up walking around campus and enjoying the afternoon.

That night we had dinner at a downtown restaurant and then drinks at the Alley Bar.  Um, I drank - a lot. Gin & Tonics, Cranberry & Vodkas, and shots. I was having a blast and my liver was holding up well. The alcohol gave me the courage to go up to a bouncer who was working the club and telling him that I "thought he was the hottest f*cking guy in the place". Yeah, I was drunk, but seriously, the dude was pipin' hot!  And Craig was impressed that I had the nerve to do it.

Sunday morning, the four of us met for breakfast at the hotel restaurant.  After the previous evening, I fully expected us to all be sitting there in dark sunglasses, but we were all functional.  LOL  We said our goodbyes and headed our separate ways. We are already exploring ideas to get together again and NOT waiting 20 years to do it.

Reconnecting with Craig, Tree and Jodi was something that I truly needed and I wish I hadn't waited so long to do it. It took me a week to recover from the trip, but it's one that I will never, EVER, forget. I am so grateful to my three friends. My life was enriched from going to school with them, but its even more so now that I've renewed our friendship.

My 20 year reunion ROCKED! :-)

Clarity

It's been a while since I've been to the gym. Lots of excuses - NONE of them valid.

I played rec league volleyball last night (we're back playing indoor now) and I realized that I really want to be in better shape, plus one of my very best friends is getting married in May and I want to look my best for it.

This morning I went to the gym and did 35 minutes on the elliptical.  It felt great.  I was amazed at how clear my mind was while I was on the machine. Everything - my problems, fears, hangups - just went away. All I could focus on was the music on my iphone and how my body was feeling.

Not wanting to over do it, I didn't push myself any further. I play volleyball again tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to it. Yes, we're in the B+ league again (which means we get our asses handed to us on a regular basis), but I love playing.

TMI Tuesday - How Do You Like_________?

Once again it's time for Sean's TMI Questions.  Hope you enjoy the answers.....

 HOW DO YOU LIKE_____?

1. Your coffee?

I'm not a coffee drinker in the traditional sense.  I can't stand the actual drink.  But I do love coffee ice cream and I've recently become addicted to an iced coffee drink from a local convenience store.  I get a mixture of the mocha and french vanilla.  It's delicious!

2. Your sandwich cut? In half, square or diagonal? Crust or no crust?

If I do get a sandwich cut, it's usually cut in half.  My favorite sandwiches are from a local place here in Ames - West Street Deli.  They are big and delicious!

3. Your coffee or tea?

Tea. Iced Tea. Usually unsweetened.  Being from the South I grew up drinking sweetened iced tea - "It's the house wine of the South." When I moved to Iowa, I discovered that unsweet tea was the only thing I could get. Over the years I got used to it and now it's what I order (with a wedge of lemon), even when I'm back in Dixie.

4. Your alcoholic beverages?

Bombay Sapphire Gin - and plenty of it.  :-) For a long time I was a Gin Gimlet fan (gin and sweet lime juice), but recently I have taken to Gin and Tonics.

5. Your ice-cream served: cup, cone, soft or hard?

Call me a traditionalist, but I love hard ice cream in a cone.  Nothing's better than a Drumstick on a hot day.

6. Your hair–long or short? Up or down? Straight or curly? Permed or natural?

Short, straight and natural.  When I let my hair grow out it becomes wavy and unmanageable, so I try to keep it short and groomed.  I have a standing haircut appointment on the 20th of each month (payday) at 4:30.  That way I always remember when it is.  I've also had the same guy cutting my hair for 6 years now.

7. Your cell phone?

Earlier this year, I got an iPhone5 and I love it!  Well frankly, I'm kind of addicted to it.  It goes with me everywhere and I use it now as my alarm clock in the morning.

8. Your computer?

I'm an Apple man. I just simply find them easier to use.

9. Your web browser?

Google Chrome - I'm kind of hooked on using Google's stuff - Chrome, Gmail, Maps.  Again, easy to use and easy on the eyes.

10. Your car?

I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu Classic. It's older, but it gets me where I need to go. I'm hoping in the next year to upgrade to something newer.

BONUS
Your sex? Position? How often? Mild or wild? One or more?

Oh that's a subject for another day. Maybe when I'm drunk off my a$$.
