Restoran Boston Baru @ Kapar, Klang

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 11:37 AM 0 comments

The mention of Boston restaurant to any Klangnite, it should somehow ring the bell. For patrons that looks for good tasting food, not cost you a hole in your pocket, and doesn't mind the environment, this is The restaurant for you.

Important to note, its either you come before they open their restaurant, so that you can be in queue to be their first round of customers... else, be prepared for probably the longest wait for your food to be served. Waiting time exceeding 1 hour is common, and you are lucky if it doesn't exceed 2.

Despite it all, I still feel the food is worth all the hassle.

Queue starts 6pm+
A common sight
When they open their door, all those in queue will go around to get their seat, either inside the restaurants, on the pavement across the road, or along the front door of the shoplots (as they close for business). Those who comes after all seats are taken has to be prepared for the longest wait for their food and queue numbers will be given out. All those seated inside will get priority to order.

I had meal here, probably more than 10 times, and it should have been more if not for the waiting time that most people dread or skip.

They have a few must orders and their fried noodle does taste above par.

We ordered their Tapioca Noodles which is made from tapioca starch. The taste of the noodle surely carried the 'wok hei', and love to the see this translucent noodle. They also use pork lard which was so crunchy and tasty and the noodle was perfectly cooked, with the right chewiness.

Tapioca Noodle. Price-RM6
We ordered the large steam la la.I like how their lala was of the right size, with flesh in every shell. The chinese wine, bird eye chilli and lots of ginger used to steam the lala definitely gave the kick to our tastebud. The fried garlic that topped it was so crunchy and lend a strong aroma to the delicious plate of steamed lala.

Steam Lala. Price-RM24
I love this cereal mantis shrimp by Boston. The size of the mantis shrimp was just nice, despite that some that were missing solid flesh, however, for those that you can, it has ample flesh for biting.

The cereal cooked together with egg has a distinctive smell of butter which was divine. It was fried so perfectly that each cereal was so crunchy, sweet, tasty and we almost finish all parts of the crumbs.

Mantis Shrimp. Price-RM16
As we end the dinner, all seats are fully occupied, and new line of queue was in place.

Another common sight
A day later, I was already craving for the same food, and the food experience indeed lingered in my mind. With proper time planning, cutting on waiting time is indeed achievable.

Verdict
A meal that costed only RM50 was highly satisfactory to us. For the quality and price of food, I would willingly compromise with the long waiting time.

Gerai. The Food Loft @ Setia Alam, Shah Alam

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 3:45 PM 1 comments

Hang out with Glenies a while ago, and she suggested this simple local dish restaurant that opened at Setia Alam. When she said, its called 'GERAI'... I thought 'I bet its not the normal hawker stall, just couldn't wait to check it out'.

The restaurant has a very simple deco, and carries 1 important element - was really clean.. As you enter some restaurant, you know you are there for either their ambiance, or you wouldn't mind a really simple one in terms of deco, as long as they serve good food, and clean. So, I suppose that Gerai falls in to the 2nd category.

Inside of Gerai

I was having a slight difficulty when going through the menu, as there were quite a few dishes that caught my eyes. They have all the local dishes that one would like to have, including pan mee, curry noodle, nasi lemak etc.

I felt like a bowl of curry laksa, so opted for that. I liked the color of the curry, not too red, with a light curry color... The bowl of curry has all the complete ingredients with hard boiled egg, fish cake, chicken, taufoo pok, cockles... I like the curry richness, and the overall taste that isn't too spicy.

Gerai Laksa. Price-RM6.50

I tried a little of the dried chilli pan mee. Though chilli pan mee isn't one of my favorite, thought it has just the right flavor.

Dried Chilli Pan Mee. Price-RM6.50

Anyone that knows me would know that fish cake is one of my absolute favorite. I would have fish cake / fish ball, any time, and wish there is a fish ball buffet.. haha..
There is a slight crisp of the skin covering the fish cake, and though it lacks just a little 'springy-ness', overall it did satisfied my tastebud. .This plate of fish cake is really worth paying for, as the 4 generous size of fish cake cost only RM4.90 (1 slightly bigger size fish cake cost around RM6 at another restaurant that I frequent).

Fish Cake. Price-RM4.90

Overall, Gerai is just the kinda place one would choose to visit for goodness of the good old hawker fare, that can be enjoyed more comfortably.

It's nice to know that I can count on 'Gerai' to offer me good quality food at the right pricing, the next I am around Setia Alam area.

Fat Spoon @ Uptown, Damansara Utama

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 3:59 PM 3 comments

Uptown is an office area that is never short of F&B outlets. After discovering Fat Spoon, waited for the right Sunday to come for lunch (parking will be too much a hassle during weekday).

Just loved the homely atmosphere within, and the ID that gives such a raw feel to it. Also interesting to see the kitchen utensils, pot, tiffin etc, hunged at one corner of the cafe.

A nice Sunday afternoon spent at Fat Spoon Cafe : nice place, good food!

The counter area, and drink making area

Menu, posted within this old ladybird storybook. Good recycling effort, and presented in a rather unique way

As it was Shereen and my first time here, we naturally will look out for its specialty. And Fat Spoon being known to offer grandma's recipe, we wanted to look for something that could gives us such originality in taste. We both thought the owners was rather 'original' in presenting their menu, and after flipping through (trying not to be distracted by pictures in the story book), we decided on Perut Ikan Meehoon.
It came with lots of mix of vege, asam keping, some fish, in this overall thick broth and 'crowded' looking plate of noodle. We really liked this, as it brought a tangy and spicy Nyonya taste to our taste senses.. Meehoon soaked all the 'goodness' within, and every bit was to its satisfaction.

Perut Ikan Meehoon. Price-RM8.90

We also shared the Ulam Fried Rice which was no less satisfactory. The wok-fried rice with sambal and aromatic herbs was tasty, and loved the fried chicken.

Ulam Fried Rice. Price-RM11.90

Me & Shereen

Lychee sorbet with mint - a refreshing drink, to cool and good end to a relaxed Sunday afternoon

Interesting washing and toilet area, with pages from old comics pasted everywhere

During our visit which was a month plus ago, they were busy taking shots to put together a video for their 1st anniversary. Happy 1st Anniversary, Fat Spoon! May you have many more wonderful years serving us good food..

Home Made Fish Head Noodle @ Kota Damansara

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 11:11 PM 4 comments

Heard so much about Kennedy's at Kota Damansara, but being there on a wrong day ie. Monday (found it closed), had me & Cass opted for Home Made, fish head noodle instead.

I was extremely pleased to find this popular fish head noodle in such spacious and comfy environment.

Nice place for lunch

We had a little boy that required lots of attention...

"Give me your IPhone"....

I ordered their 3 layer milk tea.. This was by far the best I've tasted of 3 layer milk tea, after those that I tried from Kuching years back...Has this fragrant gula melaka taste, that compliments the other 2 layers made-up of tea and milk..The sweetness level was just right too.. Yumms....

3 Layer Milk Tea. Price-RM3.50

I ordered the Deep Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon. I have always liked my fish head noodle with milk, and also filled with lots of spring onion, tomato, salted vege, and I was happy to found generous portion of deep fried fish head, and fish meat. I liked the crunchiness on parts of the fried fish, enough meat for me to bite and the chewiness on some parts...
Overall satisfied with this bowl of noodle.

Fried Fish Head Mee Hoon. Price-RM8.50

Cass had hers with fish paste. Trust it would have been equally good.

They do not sell just fish head noodle, and within their menu, they also sell various toast breads, rice dishes... with a little similarity to chains such as Kim Gary and Pappa Rich..

Bora Asmara @ Kg Sg Penchala

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 1:09 PM 0 comments

A restaurant nestled within the kampung neighbourhood sounds interesting to us (though I've been here few years back, can't quite remember how it was like, or how to get here). With the help of map from Bora Asmara, was here to celebrate the birthday of Aloy & Janice.

Love the ambiance that is towards the Balinese style - open-air and spacious enough. We were there early, before all other guests, and before the evening rain starts.

Within the restaurant compound

Another view of the restaurant

Berposing before our dinner

Apart from the quite a different ambiance, I wouldn't recommend one to come all the way here for the food, as the standard was so so only, truly. Bora Asmara would have garnered another visit in future should there were 50% of the dish we ordered the other day tasted good, however, am disapointed that none of the dish that made me feel that a returned visit will be worth it.

We started our dinner with Top Hat - a famous nyonya snack which also known as Pie Tee. The filling of the top hat combines sengkuang, carrot, egg and spring onion. Sadly the most important 'recipe' to make this good is the case/top hat that holds the filling which ought to be crispy was not the case. It tasted like this was prepared earlier, and not placed in an air-tight container.

Top Hat. Price-RM15.90

The nyonya asam fish being one the popular dish doesn't carry much aroma.

Nyonya Asam Fish. Price-RM42.90

The tofu was a simple dish using japanese tofu, fried, and cooked with oyster sauce together with mushroom. Doesn't taste bad, nor good.

Singkong Tofu. Price-RM12.90

The only better dish was the Ayam Bakar Warung which was barbecued well, fragant enough and moist tender tasting chicken. However, for this approximate 1/4 chicken size which costed RM19.90, not that worth it, I fel
t.

Ayam Bakar Warung. Price-RM19.90

The kailan with salted fish tasted just like an ordinary plate of vege, with really not much of salted fish spotted, nor much of its taste. Tasted like lots of oyster sauce was used to make this plate of vege tasty.

Kailan Salted Fish. Price-RM11.90

The pandan chicken surely lacks the aroma of fried chicken wrapped in pandan.

Thai Pandan Chicken. Price-RM19.90

I felt really bad for making some comments on the overall food quality. The only thing that enhanced our experience was the really friendly and helpful staff which were all the time ready to be our photographer that night.

Aloy & Janice - the birthday guy and girl (seated).
Standing from L : Sally, Sam, myself

Bora Asmara also has this band that comes around each table to sing for the guest, starting at 8.30pm. The lead singer could really sing well. Started with birthday song to Aloy & Janice, followed by 2 more numbers. From where we were seated, we saw a total of 3 birthday cakes brought into my guest, showing that this is indeed a popular restaurant for birthday celebration.

Being a little kiasu, we surrounded the band for a shot

Us being open to try out new places, could at least now say, at least we have tried, and hope Aloy and Janice had a wonderful birthday the other night.

It's A Noodle Bar @ Bangsar Village 2

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 10:48 AM 0 comments

A fresh feeling dashed in when I stepped into It's A Noodle Bar, which is connected to For Goodness Sake. I love the raw looking feel, simple yet cosy ambiance. We were brought menu from the 2 restaurants. Not bad. Seated at either side, and you have choice of menu from 2 restaurants.

A cosy, yet simple deco

You get the best of both world - menu from The Goodness Sake and It's A Noodle Bar

Ordered tong sui while waiting for the other 2 colleagues to arrive. The apple, boiled with lotus seed and lilybud was just nice-ain't too sweet, and good for cooling the body.

L : Snow fungus, ginko and egg. Price-RM5.50
R : Apple, lilybud, lotus seed, red dates and snow fungus. Price-RM5.50

This was the right choice made by Tay, as the vege and yam was fried till real crispy, and fragrant. Yumm yumm.

Yam and Vegetable Fritters. Price-RM5

Kelly opted for the pan mee, with minced chicken, ikan bilis and fishball.

Dry Pan Mee. Price-RM9.50

Tay was extremely tempted by the golden sauce noodles which in fact was very 'golden' looking. It combines kembong fish, pineapple, cucumber, 'keropok' with 'lai fun' noodles in spicy and sour sauce.

Golden Sauce Noodles. Price-RM9.50

My choice was the fillet of snapper with vermicelli. I like that it doesn't feel like I've had a too heavy meal - overall, this bowl of noodle tasted alright. It looks milky as its soybean soup, however, lacked the aroma.

Fish Fillet Vermicelli. Price-RM14.50

Chris's choice was the beef brisket noodles.

Braised Beef Brisket Noodles. Price-RM12.50

The bite size order came last - we were looking forward for this, as we love brinjal, and chicken floss. However, this was a little let down, as the fried brinjal was rather tasteless, and flavour from the spicy chicken floss doesn't help much either.

Fried Eggplant with Spicy Chicken Floss. Price-RM5

Overall, our take of the meal that it tasted alright, but lack the wow factor (somehow none of this dish has a strong aroma) that would make us want to return to have what we had the other night.

However, the environment and the meal that is quite fairly priced, especially around this area, may garner It's A Noodle Bar future visits.

Strawberry Field @ PJ States

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 11:41 PM 0 comments

Met up with SK, whom I was real close to, during my days at NM. Its been a year plus since we last met.

Based on where's convenient for the both of us, we met at Strawberry Field at PJ, States, last 2 Fridays.

I've been here few times in the past, mainly to have drinks, thus on that night, we opted for cantonese fried kuey teow, and the tom yam mee hoon. Their food and drinks are reasonably priced here.

The cantonese fried kuey teow though nothing fantastic, the standard was on par with some of the 'dai chau' restaurants that I go to. The kuey teow fried till just nice, and thickness of the gravy was also just nice
.

Cantonese style kuey teow. Price-RM6.50

The tom yam mee hoon was really good. Just the smell of the tom yam when it was served made me drool. The soup was really good, cooked with sufficient spices, which makes it real aromatic. We really loved this. Tom yam is best eaten together with mee hoon, for the mee hoon could fully absorb the soup.

Tom yam mee hoon. Price-RM6.50

Yum, yum... Can we start eating, SK?

It was a lovely catch up. The close to 3 hours of catching up doesn't seem quite enough - SK, you better not be such workaholic, and spare me more of your time, ok?? *<>*

Me & SK (both with initials of SK, actually)... *<>*

For an evening, in a cosy environment, with food and drink, the total bill came up to RM20.40. Where else to find such 'peng, leng, cheng' place? Keke....

Ah Tuan Ee @ The Curve

Posted by ijustwanaeat On 1:59 PM 0 comments

Friday lunch is the day that extra effort is made to drive out for lunch. My office area is one of the area where we felt lack of choice of places to eat. Went to Curve one of the Fridays ago, and with the 1000x more choices of places to eat, the 3 of us being frickle-minded at first (reallyyyy frickle-minded), settled for Ah Tuan Ee. Despite it being opened since Curve was first opened, this was our first time.

Like the Peranakan styled restaurant

The first being served was the assam laksa. First thought was, it was really small serving - the 'lai fun' was so little. Overall taste so-so. Sourish and though with quite a lot of fish, the soup is a little watery than the usual assam laksa I had in the past.

Laksa Assam Lemak. Price-RM13

The char kuey teow tasted alright. Not too wet and quite fragrant.

Char Kuey Teow. Price-RM11

The tang hoon has a touch of tom yam taste. Made us felt like there's not too much skill required to prepare this, except for just adding in the tom yam flavouring.

Fried Tang Hoon. Price-RM11

The overall taste was just average. Don't think will return here again, especially since there are so many choices of places to eat.
