Embrasse Review - A Sunday Lunch Part II @ Carlton

One Sunday afternoon, the Boy and I were again wandering lost without a plan in mind. I jumped on Twitter to check what was the menu at Embrasse for their Sunday lunch, and to my delight, it was chicken and fish! (I can't eat beef you see...)...

And as a plus, if we mentioned we had come to dine on that day because of Twitter, we get a free cheese platter included in our meal... So that decided it! We were on our way!!!...

As we got there, Camm (FOH manager) greeted us with a twinkle in his eye... sat us down next to the window (fantastic!) and proceeded to tell us what the lunch would consist of..

Q Eleven Breakfast Review @ South Melbourne (Market)

Sometimes one just can't decide what to eat for breakfast. Sometimes one is just driving aimlessly up and down the inner suburbs of Melbourne on a Sunday morning. Sometimes, one can't find any good places to eat at.

Sometimes... one does! That's how we found Q Eleven at South Melbourne (Right in front of the market!)...

Old Town Kopitiam Mamak @ QV, Melbourne (An Asian Snack Food Tasting)

I have been very slack with putting up this post. So slack that I've been letting it slide since September... So here it goes...This is quite a visually long post :P

Thanh decided to host a Asian Snack Food Tasting at Old Town Kopitiam Mamak in QV... and it was also my first time meeting Agnes and Thanh in person (Twitter really does not count) :P Now this is a branch of Old Town Kopitiam located in Chinatown (and I'm quite sure of the one in Malaysia)... and this outlet caters for those wishing for a taste of Mamak (that just sounds wrong)...

Click here for their menu, as it is quite different from the menu at Old Town Kopitiam in Chinatown...

Izakaya Den Review @ Russell Street, Melbourne

After the Taste of Melbourne this year, a bunch of bloggers and twitterers decided to pay a visit to Izakaya Den as they performed so well in the event.

The wonderful ingénue (she might choke on this a bit, so I'll add, for good measure, chotto!) author behind the blog of Blah Blog Blah did really well in organising the get together (given that I have never met her prior to this [face-to-face I mean]).

Together with a few others from blogs such as I Eat Therefore I Am, Jeroxie, Off the Spork and essJay Eats, we made a Motley Crue of food enthusiasts ready to tackle on this new frontier (okay, we had a little bit to drink prior to dinner... just a tiny bit!)

Hako Review @ Flinders Lane, Melbourne

HR ladies to eat, away we go!
KM was leaving and we had decided to pop over to Hako down the road for a farewell lunch. Busting My Chops had recommended the place as she recalled it as being worthwhile and reasonable for the price...

When we got there, we were greeted warmly and showed our seating. The place was already beginning to bustle with the lunch time crowd. We were clever and pre-ordered before hand via their online booking and by researching their menu.

Milkwood - Brunswick East - Breakfast Review @ 120 Nicholson Street

The sign for Milkwood is nondescript
As we were all staying over at Ms Tinymouse's house for our girly weekend, we were asking the boys to come join us for brekkie...

Being near to Brunswick, the Boy suggested we try Milkwood. Milkwood is owned by ex-owners of Cafe Rosamond Diana Korndoffer and Alex Patterson

Spice Temple Review @ Crown Casino, Melbourne

The entrance to Spice Temple is right next to Rockpool Bar & Grill
"SPICE TEMPLE IS OPENING!!" The Boy excitedly kept me up to date with the going-ons with the set-up of the restaurant. He'd check the Rockpool blog nearly daily to tell me how close they were to the opening day.

Il Fornaio Brunch Review - Part II @ 2 Acland Street, St Kilda

The shot I was aiming for in my first post
We returned to il Fornaio the second time, in hopes of catching the ever elusive Snickers dessert. So since we  failed to catch it the last time (due to us arriving when the kitchen closed), we decided that the next visit would be done early! Brunch early!

Breakfast/ Lunch menu
Look! A menu!! This time we had a very charming waiter, who was very pleasant and easy to talk to. Armed with magazines and the Boy's iPad, we were ready for a nice day along the beach (we did take a stroll on the very crowded beach).

We asked the waiter, "Will you have the Snickers dessert today? Now?"

Waiter, "Snickers? Of course! How many would you like? Just one? Excellent"

We placed our orders for our main meal and drinks (a caffe latte and a mocha)

The Boy decided to stick with breakfast and ordered the il Fornaio Benedict (poached eggs, smoked ham and hollandaise $ 15)

Hand rolled potato gnocchi
I decided to go with lunch and ordered the hand rolled potato gnocchi with lamb ragu, marjoram and black olives $21 (also available on the dinner menu $24)

The Boy clearly loved his eggs Benedict and only allowed me a tiny taste... and I absolutely loved the gnocchi and the lamb ragout... oh my.. that Lamb Ragout.. was AMAZING... delicious, with the flavours all working together to bind the sweet sweet gnocchi in the mouth... *sigh*

Now on to the dessert...

Wait a minute, where's the dessert?

Well....

Just before our dishes were served, a rather sheepish waiter came by our table...

"Madam, so sorry. I've just been told that the Snickers will only be ready at 3pm."

I smiled sweetly at him... and vowed to give them another chance... One more time, eh... Third time lucky?

I'll catch them, at DINNER!!!

For my previous encounter and to fully understand the irony, please read Part I.

il Fornaio Review - Part I @ St Kilda, 2 Acland Street

When we first heard that Phillipa Sibley had taken over il Fornaio in St Kilda, the Boy and I were ecstatic! The QUEEN of desserts had arrived in town and we were just around the corner! Minutes to her famed Snickers dessert! MINUTES! (Yes, I'm a food groupie)

The decoration adorning the wall
So one Sunday afternoon, the Boy and I took a leisurely drive and arrived about 3pm. Walked in, sat down and I eagerly looked around to see what everyone else was eating.

No one was eating any desserts of any kind. I walked up to the cake/bakery counter, and NO famed desserts. Only a few pieces of cakes, sandwiches and some quiche...

The bread and cake counter
Quite depressed, I walked back towards the seated Boy, who had kindly waited for me before putting in an order for tea and coffee (coffee apparently is a must have, since they get their stock from St. Ali)

Cane Sugar
The coffee arrived and I put in my order for the most lively looking cake behind the counter, and the Boy ordered a tea time quiche...

Coffee was good, but still only second best to Brother Baba Budan and Seven Seeds...

Caffe Latte and English Breakfast Tea
The cake arrived, and although not quite the amazing dessert I was looking forward to, it was a really good cake. Moist and full of flavour, the orange and almond was a perfect pair matched in the oven :)

Flourless Orange and Almond Cake
The Boy said that his bacon and pea (Not quite sure if it was a Lorraine), was really good. The quiche had a delicate balance of creamy and rich, which is quite often hard to find at other bakeries and cafes.

Quiche Lorraine
Although quite disappointing that we didn't quite make the try out for the dessert, the Boy and I vowed to return to try our luck again.

We weren't offered any explanations either when we asked the waitress who served us if there was a menu and where were the famed desserts. She just said, "No menu. The kitchen shuts at 3pm", and then walked away.

A bit taken aback with that answer, we did not dare to ask any more questions. We did however return the following week for breakfast...

Cocktail Night @ Cafe Vue, Normanby Chambers - October's 5th Element

The door that greeted our entry
When Ms Fashionista agreed to come to Melbourne for a visit, Ms Tinymouse and I were super ecstatic!!.. A GIRLY WEEKEND!!! What better task than to sit back, relax, gossip, giggle and dress up for no reason...

What better place to do that than at Cafe Vue's Cocktail Night. So I rang and booked for 3 for their October Cocktail Night, which was themed The 5th Element, to be told by a pleasant lady on the other line that unfortunately, the cafe was fully booked for that first Friday of October.

She asked if I would like to be informed if a cancellation occured, and of course I said, YES!

Fortunately, there was a cancellation and we made it!

A cute concept of using recyclable wooden utensils
We were told that the doors would open at 6.30pm and the first course would be served at 7.00pm. We arrived to see that the place was indeed filling up fast!

The menu that was present throughout the whole night
As we were seated, we were informed of the process and introduced to the concept of the Cocktail Night. Being the foodie that I was, I begin jotting down notes as each "element" was brought to us, as there was alcohol involved and I wasn't going to trust my memory on this ^_^

Water - spherification of Cairpirinha
First cocktail, representing the 'Water' element, was a bit confusing, as we were left to our own device to figure out how to drink it. Apparently 3 giggling girls could get it wrong!... We drank the shot and then had the lemon 'oyster', rather than the other way round, much to the amazement of the couple seated next to us...

As a drink, because it was a shot, this went extremely quick and I was feeling quite lightheaded! My tolerance to alcohol has pretty much gone downhill ever since I stopped working for companies that offer month end drinks :P

Tuna tataki with oyster emulsion, saltbush & edible sand
The first course that was paired with the cocktail was a delicious Tuna tataki dish. With the most delicate edible sand and oyster emulsion. I quite literally wanted to lick the plate clean! (I DID NOT, in case you were wondering!)

This dish would be my second favourite dish of the night!

Air - gin, marschino liqueur, lemon & lavender mist
Cheers to over 20 years of girly friendship!
The second 'element' arrived, a cocktail comprising gin and representing the element of 'Air'. This was our least favourite drink... it was quite bitter and neither of us finished it off... it had an interesting introduction though!

Before we were allowed to drink, there was a brief introduction, and one waitress released a lavender and lemon scented mist upon us (from a perfume bottle!)

My notes, with Ms Tinymouse's extra notes :)
By this stage, Ms Tinymouse was extremely giggly and kept succumbing to laughter at anything that was being said, much to the amusement of the lady seated next to us, whom we later discovered was a free-lance Journalist doing a piece for The Age.

Buckwheat risotto with duck egg and cranberry
The second course, was our most FAVOURITE dish of the night! Buckwheat risotto with duck egg and cranberry... second best risotto I've ever eaten (first being from Tutto Benne), actually could be one of the best.. considering the last one I had from Tutto was a complete disaster!! (Chocolate and red wine risotto, you ask me why? I'm just as confounded as you...)

The delicate balance of flavours and the crispiness of the duck (bacon) and cranberries worked really well together.

Shot courtesy of Ms Tinymouse
We took quite a lot of photos (as can be seen), with Ms Fashionista's SLR camera... which prompted one of the waiters to demand, "Okay, whose the food blogger here??!"... hence. how we found out that the lady next to us was a free lance Journo and now a Twitter acquaintance :)

The waiter was hilarious and was very friendly and chatty... just the way we like it with alcohol!

Earth - frozen peaty whisky and dark chocolate
The third 'element", Earth, was Ms Fashionista's favourite... it was a frozen cocktail (meaning ice-cream!), of whisky and dark chocolate and had a very very intense smoky essence...

Pan seared kangaroo loin with celeriac puree & cocoa soil
Paired with the Earth element, was a pan smeared kangaroo loin with celeriac puree & cocoa soil... (those tiny bits of meat at the background is speck)

The kangaroo dish came adorning paint spattered boards
When the waitress said, "Speck", I had to ask her to explain.. brain was already very slow ... I had assume she was saying that the board was speckled!... (yes yes, laugh all you want)

Arriving under cover and released with smoke!!
FIRE - cognac, fig, orange & burnt sugar
The fourth element was my favourite! And I even polished off Ms Tinymouse's cocktail (by this stage, she was drinking warm water and no alcohol)...

Representing 'Fire', this cocktail was a mix of cognac and burnt sugar (do you see why I liked it?)

Fromage - Fire Engine Red Panna Cotta with red wine gel & Squid Ink Grissini
Paired with it was an interesting dish... a cheesy panna cotta with red wine gel... those little squiggly sticks you see poking out of the panna cotta, are actually squid ink grissini, a bit tasteless, but very crunchy...

It was at this stage I caught the gentleman next to us licking his plate! The waiter (our good friend), approached him to say that we unfortunately missed the best picture of the week!

The 5th Element!!
The last element, the 5th Element, we were told to guess...

We were also told that we had to make the cocktail ourselves, by balancing the flavours provided...

Citrus, Syrup and tinctures (own made bitters)
I actually had a lot of fun... all 3 of us ended up with very different tasting drinks... and we all liked our own versions best

Reversed Floating Island
Paired with the last course, a dessert... which was a reversed floating island...

Delicious vanilla cream oozing out of the meringue shell encasing it, the dessert was sweet and was a great way to end the course.

Did you guess what the last element was?

It was ....

Creation!

It was a super fun night, filled with much chatter (we were chatting to the two tables immediately next to us and sharing notes!)

Would I return for another adventure? Most definitely... am already planning one for the girls at work for November's menu!!!

Nyonya Weekend Buffet Review @ Chilipadi, Melbourne Central

Last week, the Boy and I had the honour to be invited by the owners of Chilipadi at Melbourne Central to try out their menu for their Nyonya (or Nonya) Weekend Buffet (which will be starting soon). Special thanks to Penny (from Jeroxie) who gathered a bunch of us bloggers and tweeps to try the fabulous food that night!

The beautiful table setting of fabric rose petals, real daisies, and tea candles had us all in the romantic mood

Penang Coffee House @ Burwood Road, Hawthorn

The unassuming profile of Penang Coffee House
Penang Coffee House has been around for a long time. Frequented by Swinburne university students and lecturers alike, they have been the go to Malaysian joint for us for as long as I remember.

The menu with all the right information
I remember back in uni days (I'm not from Swinburne *ahem*), we'd drive to Hawthorn East and have conversations with the owner. Him regailing us with tales of growing up in Malaysia (Ipoh) and us listening politely and updating him with news from home.

The view into the kitchen
That was in the old restaurant. A few years ago, they moved to a bigger outlet further up the road. The place still gets crowded with loyal customers...

The now empty but often cramp and bustling dining area
We usually have a starter, main and dessert just because they have everything we crave for!

Tauhu Goren (Fried Tofu with cucumber and bean sprouts and satay sauce)
From delicious fried (and stuffed) tofu...

Slurp-fest!
To delicious laksas... (Laksa's here differ from the ones you may find in Laksa King, as the one you find here has a richer milkier soup base --> Hence why it's called Laksa Lemak [which literally translates to Fat Laksa!]) It just has a richer quantity of coconut milk in it.

Laksa Lemak (I usually request for it to be more spicy!)
Their Hainanse Chicken rice is pretty good as well, you can't really go wrong with it. (And if you did, you shouldn't be dining there in the first place)

Hainanese Chicken Rice
Once when I wasn't feeling too well and had a sorethroat, Ms Tinymouse didn't allow (she strongly advised against it) for me to have my usual order of Laksa Lemak and instead had to go for a soupier and clearer noodle soup/broth, which turned out to be quite good (considering the owner is from Ipoh)

Ipoh Hor Fun (Flat rice noodles with prawns, spinach and sometimes chicken)
The Boy usually orders Hokkien Mee (Noodles) or Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) when he's here, as he can't take spicy dishes and he quite likes it. So it must be good.

Nasi goreng (Fried Rice)
Their desserts are quite good as well. We've had their Ice Kacang as well as their Pulut Hitam (Black glutinous rice). Somehow it seems that in my haste to consume the desserts, I'd forgotten to take pictures of it. And I can't be bothered trawling pictures from past visits to find it. So you'll have to use your imagination 0_0

Would I return? Undoubtedly.. I've been coming here for years. Although the recent price increase (yet again!) has put a damper on my enthusiasm.

I would rather go to the Little King Eatery :) now that I know about it!
