Nov/Dec 2014- I Feel the Love Project

It is already that time of the year again, time to start collecting holiday cards for kids that will be spending time in the hospital during the holidays! In the past, this has been one of the biggest collections and we cannot wait to get lots and lots of cards to send to these special kids :)  We like to spread the love all over the country and this holiday season we are honoring a fabulous children's hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

November/December 2014 I Feel the Love Project

From Children's Hospital at Erlanger:
"Children's Hospital at Erlanger is the sort of full-service facility usually found only in very large cities. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is designated Level III by the state, providing the very highest level of care for premature or sick newborns. The Pediatric Trauma Team, Emergency Department and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit provide immediate, 24-hour-a-day care for critically ill or injured children.

Erlanger LifeForce Air Ambulance and the Neonatal/Pediatric Ground Transport make the services of Children's Hospital quickly accessible to pediatric patients throughout our region. No other facility in our region offers these services."

Feeling the love for Lily.

We at the I Feel the Love Project sincerely hope that you have been enjoying your summer!  We cannot believe that September is here.  A big thank you to everyone who has been supporting the I Feel the Love Project month after month.

This month we would like to honor a young girl who is battling ALL Leukemia.  Her name is Lily and here is her story:

On June 17th 2014 while visiting her father, Lily was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia.  Lily started chemotherapy June 18th and has had her mother and grandmother by her side the entire time.  She has received tons of love and support from her family and friends, but is already tired of being poked and measured.

Lily's main interests/likes include: Disney, the color purple, glitter and art, and Monster High.

Please join us as we create handcrafted cards for this amazing little girl. We would like to create signed cards of support, as well as cards that say thinking of you or anything that suggests love and encouragement.  Please consider joining us this month!

I Feel the Love Project- August 2014

You might not know this, but September is National Grandparents month.  We thought it would be a terrific idea to honor seniors during this month by selecting an assisted living facility as our August I Feel The Love Project cards recipient.  We will collect cards in August to send out in September just in time for National Grandparent's Day!

Wynwood of McMinnville provides Personalized Assisted Living and Alzheimer’s Care options for seniors.  Personalized service plans are reviewed regularly by staff to ensure that they meet the changing needs of their residents. Their trained staff is there to assist with personal needs – bathing or showering, selection of clothing, dressing assistance, grooming, hygiene, mobility and transferring and dining assistance – 24 hours a day.

Integral to life at Wynwood are the programs, outings and opportunities they offer to their residents. Their philosophy is to incorporate not only resident’s individual interests, but opportunities that allow them to make meaningful contributions to each other and the community on a regular basis.

Please join us as we create handcrafted cards for the amazing elderly people who utilize this facility. We would like to create signed cards of support, as well as cards that say thinking of you or anything that suggests love and encouragement.  Please consider joining us this month!

I Feel the Love Project- July 2014

Last month I should have said welcome to the first project of year 4!  We just completed our third year with over 30 projects being successfully shipped out.  Time flies!

Friendship Home exists to support, shelter and advocate for
victims of domestic violence and their children.

Friendship Home Seeks To:
  • Provide a continuum of safe, confidential shelter options--from emergency shelter through transitional shelter.
  • Provide a rich array of crisis intervention services, case management and emotional support to those we shelter as well as those who are waiting for shelter; helping them to rebuild their lives, free from fear.
  • Continue to reach out to survivors through individual advocacy, emergency case management and support groups after they leave shelter, offering an environment where survivors feel welcome and are encouraged to share their stories and their wisdom with others.
Please join us as we create handcrafted cards for the children and families who utilize this agency.  We would like to create blank and unsigned cards of support, as well as unsigned birthday cards.  These cards can be kept on hand and used as needed.  Please consider joining us this month!

I Feel the Love Project- May 2014

Our recipients continue to want to pay it forward, so the I Feel the Love Project would like to shine a light this month on a sweet little girl that Maddy (March 2014) and her family met while undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Please join us as we create handcrafted cards for Violet and her family, the May 2014 I Feel the Love Project card recipients. Maddy's mother shared that this family can really use our love and support right now.  Please consider joining us this month!

In June of 2013, Violet was diagnosed with infant leukemia (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) when she was just 10 months old. She is an amazing little girl who is the youngest of three other siblings. She loves making silly faces with her brothers and sister, playing peekaboo, and chowing down on delicious bread products!

Violet is currently receiving chemotherapy and blood transfusions at a local hospital. She has already had two surgeries to prepare her for her treatments. Her family lives an hour away from the hospital. When her at-home care begins, they will still return to the hospital for treatment throughout the month. Her prognosis is promising, but she and her family have a long road ahead of them that will last at least two years.

We will be collecting cards for Violet, but if you would like to include a card for her parents that would be great! The cards can be signed and it is always fun to include where you are from in your card.

I Feel the Love Project- April 2014
Please join us this month as we create handcrafted greeting cards to send to the Violet and her family. If you would like to be a part of this month's project:

I Feel the Love Project April 2014: Bringing awareness to children in need

Because April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, the I Feel the Love Project would like to shine a light this month on a fabulous nonprofit center that works with abused, neglected, and at-risk children.  Please join us as we create handcrafted cards for Tennyson Center for Children, the April 2014 I Feel the Love Project card recipient.

"At Tennyson Center for Children kids suffering from abuse, neglect, emotional crises and other traumatic experiences will get the help they need while finding healing and HOPE in a safe and caring environment. Our varied programs build trust, offer support, encourage loving, caring, healthy relationships, and teach kids just how precious they are." (taken from the Tennyson Center for Children home page).

Programs at Tennyson Center for Children include: Residential Treatment, Day Treatment, Education Programs, Community-Based and Special Home-Based Services, Outpatient Therapy, and other programs.

We will be collecting birthday cards for the children.  In addition, we are looking for cards that could be given out when a child, or even a staff member, is having a difficult day (cheer up theme).  The center can keep all these cards on hand to hand out at the appropriate time.  Our hope is to shower this center with lots of cards that they can give out to the amazing young people they work with.

Who Would Steal from a Child? - I Feel the Love Project March 2014

When a jar filled with cash was stolen from a restaurant in a small Central California town, the restaurant owners and customers were shocked and dismayed. This was not an ordinary jar sitting on the counter for the purpose of leaving a tip – this was a special jar, filled with heartfelt notes and monetary donations for a very special little girl, 6-year-old Madelyn “Maddy” Gonzales, our I Feel the Love Project March 2014 card recipient.

Diagnosed in the fall of 2013 with acute lymphocytic leukemia, Maddy often travels with her family – mom, dad, and older sister – for treatments. The stolen jar of cash, filled with donations from community members, would have helped to offset some of the expenses incurred by the family.
“I was sad when I found out,” Jessica Gonzales said. “Just to know that there’s people out there that would do something like that. I’m not naïve, and I know things like this happen, but when it directly affects my daughter, well, it’s just sad.” And what was Maddy’s reaction when she heard the news a few days later?

“She said ‘That’s just stupid!’ when I told her what had happened,” Gonzales said. “Then she said she was sorry for using a bad word; she doesn’t like saying ‘stupid.’ She’s a sweet little girl and for this theft to happen was just not right.”

I Feel the Love Project- March 2014

After reading Maddy's story, we knew that she was our girl for our March project.  The exciting news for me is that for the first time since project #1 (June 2011), this is a local project for me and I get to hand deliver the box of goodies to Maddy.  That will be an extra special day!

Please join us this month as we create handcrafted greetings cards to send to Maddy. If you would like to be a part of this month's project:

Create for a Cause!

Cards for the kids...
Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center

For those of you who have been following the I Feel the Love Project for awhile, we are excited to announce that this month's I Feel the Love Project was chosen by Ms. Ashley Nelinger.

Ashley is the daughter of Reggie Nelinger, our May 2013 card recipient. Fifteen years ago, Ashley was diagnosed with Wilms', a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children. She beat the odds that were stacked against her despite losing one of her kidneys.  In January, 2013, Ashley was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer completely unrelated to the cancer she had as child. It is called rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive cancer of the connective tissues, which in Ashley’s case is attached to her sinus passage. Not only is this cancer a bit of a medical baffle due to its rare state, but Ashley only has one kidney and that makes chemo and other forms of treatment more challenging to treat than normal.

Ashley has a team of Angels known as "Angels for Ashley Nelinger" who continually pray for Ashley and spread the word about her story.  On the FaceBook page that they created, we first learned that Ashley, despite her own medical issues, wanted to be a part of helping others.  We contacted Ashley and asked if she would like to nominate someone to receive our cards so that she could be a part of spreading joy and love to others.  Ashley agreed and selected the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, where she has herself received treatment.

Please join us this month as we create handcrafted greetings cards to send to the Pediatric Floor of Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center in Ashley's honor. If you would like to be a part of this month's project:

I Feel the Love Project- January 2014

Cards for Baylee...

In August of 2011, shortly right before her 4th birthday, Baylee was diagnosed with a very rare disorder called Isolated NK Cell Deficiency. There are very few cases in the world. In addition, Baylee has been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Patients with NK cell deficiency are born with low or nonexistent levels of NK cells. As a result, these patients are vulnerable to infections. Life expectancy varies among patients, depending on how severe the deficiency. The condition may lead to fatal infections.

Despite these challenges, Baylee continues to make the most of each day and always with a smile on her face.  Let's do what we can to fill her box with love and support!!!  We have learned that her bedroom is decorated with Hello Kitty, one of her favorite things :)
