The Complete Holiday Photolog

7th Jan 2005 - 5th Jan 2006

7th to 12th Dec -
Preparing for worship at home and in church, attending church, shopping around for christmas gifts with kenny and then with later sue, caroline, phuiyee and yinru - all medics i got to know when i was visting glasgow from jan-jun05. I didn't take many pictures till the 13th of dec when kenny's parents arrived so i guess the photolog'll just start from there :).

Other than all the activities covered here, we were also attending church, window shopping, playing either monopoly or risk, watching tonnes of dvds (crappy shows included), cooking, slacking, shopping for groceries and taking walks.

Joined ken's cell group for carolling at Monklands Hospital's Psychiatric Ward where Aaron works. We sang a few carols and i must say the patients enjoyed it completely. i was told the psychiatric patients are very lonely and deprived because not many people visit their wards and also because few activities, if not at all, are planned for them. There isn't really any cure for them because their condition cannot be simply explained and cured by medicine (both senses of the word). that's so sad... :( I was glad that we could actually do something to brighten up their christmas. (p/s they aren't extreme cases who have to have straightjackets put on them). It's a pity i didn't manage to get any pictures at the ward.

Ken and i took a short trip to Lancaster (where i spent my exchange semster!)to meet my ex-flatmate Anna who was visiting from Bath. She kindly arranged free accomodation for us on campus. Father Jonathan (an Orthodox Priest a the Chaplaincy centre on campus and also Anna's spiritual father) took all 3 of us to Heysham (29th, the day it showed heavily in Glasgow.. shucks, missed it) and treated us to lunch at a chinese restaurant there after that. nice! Anna made us lunch before we headed to town the next day (30th) for some light window shopping. We also visited the Roman Bath, Lancaster Castle, The Priory, Millenium Bridge (what anna calls the ugliest bridge ever constructed) and the Lune River before we left.

Heysham, St Patrick's Chapel

One of the most beautiful places in England. Heysham used to be a small fishing village. well it's still a small village but has developed since then. It now also houses 2 of the few nuclear reactors in the country. There are even tours conducted in the plants and around the estate!

Anna and I at Lancaster Castle before we left. Lancaster is one of the 2 Duchy's of the United Kingdom. The other is the duchy of Cornwall. The castle belongs to the Queen and its rent makes up about 20% of her annual income. It still houses about 200 prisoners. The castle is also famous for having the most number of executions in the country (even more than London!). The Pendle witches were executed here in the 1640 (i think... =P).

Merry Christmas to All

To all my friends out there, Merry christmas! May the festive season and cheer bring joy and happiness to your lives. May God bless all of u and guide u each and every day of your lives!

Had a christmas dinner at victor and kerwei's place last night. it was great! 14 people turned up for the potluck party but there was more than enough food to go around. it was a feast! played 'taboo' after that, which was great fun.

woke up to a foggy christmas morning. my estimations tell me that visibility must only be 100metres at most. ken and i went for the combined service at the GCCC in the afternoon followed by an early dinner later.

Will upload pics asap (of ken's parents visit etc). can't seem to shrink them on ken's comp.

Housekeeping...

I hate Heathrow airport. that horrible messy place. it took me 1 1/2 hours to clear immigration in london. don't think efficiency exists in this country. other than that, the flight to glasgow was pretty smooth, no glitches or hiccups whatsoever and... my luggage arrived promptly this time. ken was at the airport to pick me up :) won't say more, hate to describe mushy details here.. yuck. The weather is chilly, but not as cold as i had expected.. so i guess that's a good thing.

Had a good rest yesterday afternoon and last night. ken's at class now (last day of class) and i'm home alone. poor me
:( got some cleaning done - OMgosh, u won't believe how much dust there is in his room. anyway, the furniture is all nice and clean now. will have to vacuum the floor later.

right, have to start preparing dinner now cos we're going for worship practice later (for service this sun, at which ken's leading worship). ciao :)

Leaving on a Jet Plane

I'll be leaving sg tomorrow for glasgow. will be there for a month and be back on the 6th of jan, just before school reopens. thanks to all my friends who've made an effort to meet up during the past week! really appreciate u people! sigh.. thinking of all the great gatherings and parties that i'll be missing but o well.. either one or the other :)

Decided to do away with the optional research project next semester because i'll not be in sg for the holidays. the prof prefers that we work labs in the holidays so that term won't be so stressful. i'll stick to a usual core module and if i require any training later in the course, i can always get attached to a prof during the summer holidays.

church yesterday was great. looking for the lyrics of the song "offering." i would appreciate it very much if any of you who have it share it with me. cheers :)

one more, one more...

the paper today sucked.. but that was the general feeling i guess. i couldn't finish the paper.. ditto to most people. sigh.. i'm really going to die for this one. didn't do well for the CA, somehow managed to screw up a 'take home test'. i should have done it in a group instead of doing it individually. well, it's too late for regrets. i'm just hoping that i can pull it off. it's sure to affect my overall score though.

the paper on tuesday was so easy. too easy in fact. but that's what made it difficult for me. i didn't think that one particular question would be that easy and somehow i managed to conjure up some kind of nonsense as my answer. gross, feel like cursing. the A+ was guaranteed! grrr.. i wish my dear dear prof were still here to remind me to stay calm during my exams and apply the ockham's razor. Exams really do make me go crazy, in more ways than one.

come to think of it, the papers in lancaster weren't really that easy (comparatively). let's just say God fulfilled His purpose. this time, i'm really hoping for a miracle.

on a brighter note, i'm really happy with this new template. managed to customise it a little. i'm looking forward to the month of hols in uk and... even better cos there'll be someone special to spend it with me :)

Grrrr......

what a completely lousy way to start off the exams. it was the first paper today and i completely missed a 8 mark question and realised it only AFTER the paper when i was talking to serina. what crap. and it's so so easy, could've easily gotten full marks for that. feel like screaming and slapping myself and it's not like i can "afford" to lose those marks. it wouldn't be that bad if i didn't know how to do it but i do. it's easy peasy! sigh.. if i go on i won't be able to stop whining about this so i'd better stop. just hope i'll still be able to scrape a second upper for this one. argh! stupid things like this just make me wanna bang my head against the wall. Nooooooooooooo......

my papers end on the 28th and i've got 4 more to go. can't wait for them to end.. this sem's been hard and absolutely crazy. complete madness. 4 core modules?! that sucks. nicholas's exams end today. good for him, he can finally relax. sis will be ending soon too. last two papers on the 24th. she should do well considering the amount of time shes' spent mugging. the O's and A's were stressful, glad i'm past those. can manage a smile here.. =)

gotta get back to studying.. ciao.

Humdrum

Haha~ it's been almost a month since i last updated this page but guess what? i've got nothing much to write about (notice the lack of pics too). life has just been so bland.. school work's engulfing me and taking up most of my time. lethargy is creeping in. about 2weeks + left to the exams and then it's the holidays again.. finally. gosh, term at NUS is a stark contrast to that in the UK.

why have such a heavy curriculum when most of the students forget most that was taught as soon as the exams are over? the modular system makes that even easier to do. i myself am trying to retain all the info from the previous semesters. well.. pros and cons.. shan't delve into that now.

i recently signed up for a 2 session seminar at wesley on the canonicity of the bible (and possibly the apocrypha as well) but decided to give both sessions a miss - no time.. too much to do.. yes, that's the difference (between here and overseas).. no time to pursue your interests (sigh... miss the volunteer work i did at the preschool in uk..), everything revolves around school. campus 'life'? hmmm... haha.

all my good reads are still lying on my shelf.. waiting for someone to flip their pages..

crap.. this sucks. but but...

Isaiah 40:30-31
30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Matthew 11:28
28"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Profoundness in Simplicity

Today's church service was great - it being children's ministry sunday and all. we sang quite a few what-u-would-call "sunday school" songs. i remember singing them when i was little - at kindergarten and at chapel service in primary school. today, the songs took on a whole new meaning for me. being older and wiser, i was better able to grasp the meanings behind those lyrics and as a result, was touched tremendously.

I remember singing "His Love is warmer than the warmest sunshine" very so long ago and i'm really quite sure that i used to just imagine the sun, stars and the ocean, that are mentioned in the song. i guess being too innocent, i was not able to fully comprehend the greatness of His love. i'm glad to say that today, i can better understand that fact. thanks be to God! Such simple lyrics, and yet so profound if one looks deep enough. Hopefully one day, these simple words will take on an even Greater meaning (a metaphysical one perhaps? =P) for me and for all those who seek the Lord.

Chorus:
"His love is warmer than the warmest sunshine,
Softer than a sigh,
His love is deeper than the deepest ocean,
Wider than the sky.

His love is brighter than the brightest star,
That shines every night above,
And there is nothing in this world,
That can ever change His love."

Later, we sang "So you would come" and more thoughts flooded my mind - How easy it is for little children to come to the loving Father but not for those who have experienced the cynicism and skepticism of society today. We should always remember that although the world hated Jesus first, Jesus never stopped reaching out to the lost or the poor in spirit.
"For God has said, i will never leave you, nor forsake you - Heb13:5"

The world is full of deception and lies and we should never allow ourselves to be led astray. And even if we do deviate from the path at times, we should always turn back to Him when we realise it or when we are rebuked by our bros and siss in Christ. Jesus is the ONLY way to the Father and the ONLY one that will NEVER fail us.
"It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to put confidence in man. - Psalms 118:8"
