Monday Makers!#42

Welcome to Monday Makers!#42 on a Tuesday!
I had a funny confusion yesterday.
It was a long weekend in Down Under- thanks to Queen's birthday. We were all home, didn't do much. Hubby has been quite sick with a flu so I had my nurse's cap on all through weekend and Monday. Because he was home all day on Monday (I don't work on Mondays but he does), I somehow thought it was Sunday and it only clicked that it was actually Monday when I went to bed around midnight. That's when I had the big "doh!" moment. Monday Makers?? Too late...
Hence, it is now here LOL

I had been working on the quilt for my son and I finished the quilt top the other night. Today, I want to share more about it.
Before I started this quilt, I had an exact idea about what it was going to look like- for the first time. It was going to be a simple coin quilt made with printed and solid fabric squares/rectangles. I thought this pattern would be the best  way to make a big dent in those fat quarters that I wanted to use up. Out of curiosity, I just kept on looking at coin quilts on Pinterest and saw one that I immediately fell in love with; which meant changing the plans a little. And here is my quilt top after seeing that beautiful quilt.
I strongly support that people should give proper acknowledgement of others work. The original quilt is called "Read Between the Lines" and was designed and made by Nicole of Modern Handcraft as an entry for 2014 Bloggers Quilt Festival. I searched through her blog for a pattern/tutorial for it as she said in the blogpost that she was working on a pattern but I couldn't find one.
To make my version of Nicole's quilt, I used ten different fat quarters and came up with my own measurements. It was meant to be for a single bed but once I added the solid grey part, it became almost a queen size quilt. I thought about trimming it but this would only be a waste of fabric. And you can always use a larger quilt on a single bed anyway.
(The photos look fuzzy once I upload them to the blog-no idea why.)
As much as I love it, I still think my version doesn't look as charming and organic as the original quilt. This is probably because of the fabrics I used. I still go back to Nicole's quilt and drool over it! Love the beautiful, rich colours she used.
This is also the largest quilt I have ever made; measures 55 inches x 83 inches. The idea of quilting it with my tired old machine is scary! It will have to wait until after I return from our Europe trip anyway which is only a few weeks away!

Monday Makers! #16 and some big news!!

Hi there!
How was your week? I had a really nice week. Things are not hectic at work any more; I am just finalising a few things before my office closes next Wednesday-not that I am counting!, had a lovely Sunday yesterday at the markets. The weather was beautiful after an all-day-rainy Saturday and I met some lovely people. This is one of the reasons why I love being at the markets. You meet lots of people and some of them become really good friends. I am still in touch with most of my customers whom I made a couple of years ago when I was running a Turkish food stall. I love human interaction.
And....We received some big news. No, I am not expecting a baby LOL. Most of my friends thought I was having another baby when I said "I have some big news!"
My husband got an overseas posting to Argentina!!! We will be moving to Buenos Aires in February 2016 for three years. This was something we-especially my husband- wanted so much; not necessarily Buenos Aires but going to a Latin America country. He worked in Mexico before (before we met) and loved the culture, life, and people there. Since he returned from that posting, going back to Latin America became his dream. I also love exploring different cultures, trying new food, learning new languages. I always loved the Spanish language and wanted to learn it; now this dream of mine is coming true too! I am so grateful that we both got what we have being dreaming of.
It is still a year away but we have already started planning our lives there. There is a lot to finish in and around the house, a lot to organise; so, it looks like 2015 will be a busy year! I might be sharing more of my excitement here in the future!
Now to Monday Makers!
I finished the quilt top for my quilt bee last week and today I have purchased the backing fabric as well as some fabric for a Christmas table topper I am planning to make.
I thank each of my bee fellows for being so exact with the size of their blocks. I didn't have any issues with matching the seams.
This lovely purple will be the quilt backing and the nice ash colour will be the negative space of my table topper. Love them.
Do you have any finishes and new projects you would like to share with me? If so, here are the linky rules:

A finished quilt top

No, not a new quilt top, the "damn triangles" quilt top it is.

As you might remember, I had put the whole thing away because of the mismatching triangle points. And as you know, mismatching seams bother me a LOT!!
After a long break, I decided to fix it and pulled it out again. I don't like UFOs either. Much to my surprise, it didn't require much fixing.
Here it is.
Another good example of perfect photography: setting the scene. Your quilt top must be hung while the clothes are hung too. Not my fault. I don't have fancy places to take my quilts to take their photos. Ok, maybe there are some nice places but it means taking a break from what you are doing and driving some distance. Call it lazy maybe?
I even went ahead and basted it and started quilting it.
 Perfectly matching seams, hmmmm, nice.
I am straight line quilting it and thinking about doing something fancy in the big purple triangle.
My backing is the famous Ikea numbers (Britten Nummer) fabric. I didn't prewash it so I wonder how much it is going to shrink after washing the quilt.

I am glad that this is no longer a UFO and I am looking forward to finishing it!
Linking up with Lee @Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

What is the one UFO that you have finished/gotten one step closer to finishing recently?

Finished New Wave quilt top

I finished the New Wave quilt top a few days ago. The weather is always rainy and windy here so I had to take yet another photo indoors; the quilt top hung up on my design wall.
I was going to baste it today with this famous Ikea numbers fabric and start quilting it.
But it has to wait till tonight because I have a very upset poppet at home with me. Not only is he sick but also he fell and bumped his forehead to the tile floor.
 Ouchhh!!!
