Our Sunday - 22 May 2011

I love it when the family gathers together. Sunday we gathered at my house to celebrate Emma's birthday. She turned 15 years old on Saturday, May 21st. Emma is an amazing person, with skills, talents and abilities beyond her years. I love her!

Isobel made Emma's birthday cake (though, I think Emma helped her out). She made marshmallow fondant for the frosting and a big 'cabbage' rose, with Royal Icing flowers and a ribbon for additional decorations. She also made brownie cupcakes. They were all very pretty.

It was a very nice day.

Gardening - aaah

We finally got plants for our gardens on Saturday, May 21st. We've done mostly box gardening since we moved into our building in Kidder, at least for the vegetables. Last year, we didn't grow any veggies, and we missed it!

So, Rob and I went to Jamesport where the Amish have a pretty good-sized community. We like to get our plants at "Country Acres" outside of Jamesport. I didn't realize, until Saturday, that Rob had never been with me when I bought the plants before. He was completely overwhelmed, and pleased, at the varieties available, and the prices. Needless to say, we came home with many more than the 36 tomato plants and the 18 pepper plants we had planned to purchase!

We got all the boxes filled up with plants, including some basil and oregano. We even bought one 'Delicious' tomato plant that holds the record for one tomato over seven pounds! Here's hoping. We planted several flowers and ground covers, also. We have a long way to go, but the yard is looking great.

Rob finished mowing the lawn just as it began raining. Within 15 minutes, we were in a tornado watch! I prayed and prayed for our little plants (silly, you say?). The wind blew over 50 miles an hour, the hail beat down, and then it rained buckets! This morning, about two-thirds of our tomatoes were laying on their sides, but they're alive. Now, we look forward to watching them grow and produce.

More Graduation

Did you know that children 'graduate' from pre-school? I didn't, but it is true!

Avery graduated, complete with cap and gown, on Monday, May 16th. The program was cute, of course. How could it be anything else? The stage was full of children under six, uniformly dressed, singing and wiggling. It was hard to choose which pictures to use, but here is a sampling.

Photographer!

I love taking wedding pictures! Laura's sister, Kira, got married in Nauvoo on May 14th. I was asked to be the 'official' photographer. This actually meant that the families wanted to be sure all the important pictures got taken. I was intimidated by the cameras some of the groom's family members had, but I did my job - and really enjoyed myself. It's been a long time since I was the wedding photographer. It was quite energizing. :)

Here are a few of the pictures I took:

School's out for summer

Both Sarah's and Josiah's families belong to a home school group that offers classes on a weekly basis. The subjects the students have offered to them are quite impressive.

We attended their year-end program on May 9th. The collage below shows Tessa with the ROTC leading the flag ceremony, Rebekah participating in the bell choir, Elisabeth performing with the American Sign Language class, and Emma receiving her ROTC badges (Tessa was assisting). It was a pretty long program, but we were rewarded with cake provided by the cake decorating class.

Little Sweeties!

When we got together on Mother's Day at our house, the Jensens came earlier than the others. We enjoyed a nice sit-down dinner together. These little sweethearts, Rebekah and Rachel, felt pretty special at their own 'just right' table.

Seminary Graduate!

On May 1st, we attended the Liberty Stake Seminary Graduation program. Our first grandchild, Tessa, was among the graduates. Where does time go?

Congratulations, Tess!

The other day...

... Kizzie, Andy, Avery and Jack came for a short visit. It was very nice. I always enjoy the times we get to spend with our children and grandchildren, in large or small doses.

We adults chatted in the parlor for a while. Avery and Jack played in the family room. After half an hour, or so, they all left. The house is always excessively quiet for a time.

The next morning, as I walked through the family room, I saw tidy evidence of the happy boys who'd visited the day before. It made me smile. I left the toys that way for a few more days, just for the joy of it!
