Book Review Monday

Happy New Year's Eve! This is my last blog post of this year!!!
On Friday I reviewed Montana Rose by Mary Connealy. Today I will review the next book in the Montana Marriages Series, The Husband Tree.
This book was so funny!
It is about Belle Tanner. Her last name really isn't Tanner, but that's what folks call her nowadays because so many of her husbands have died that they give up and just call her by her maiden name. She has had three husbands, and buried the lazy, no-good men under what she and her four daughters call "The Husband Tree". Her husbands have all been purely useless, according to her, and she has taken on controlling her ranch with her baby girl Betsy on her back and her other three daughters as her ranch hands. They don't need any men and the haven't since Belle's first marriage.
Except, that is, until the girls miscounted their cattle and Belle needs to hire a few men to go on a cattle drive with them. Most men in town are already on their way on other cattle drives, and she is forced to hire Silas Harden, a drifter.
Belle is determined never to marry again, and all of her daughters remind her of this when the handsome Silas  comes to work with them.
Silas has also chosen he never wants to marry also, because of his past experiences with women. Belle Tanner, on the other hand, is unlike any other woman Silas has ever met, and he is very bewildered by  her, especially when he finds out that the other cow hands that he is joining on their journey are three little girls, all under the age of fourteen.
Silas grows to love Belle and her brood of independent girls.
A subplot to this book involves Wade Sawyer, the villain of Montana Rose. He has changed ever since Cassie and Red helped him find God and he is a completely different man.
He saves a white woman raised by Indians, Glowing Sun, from a group of white men who are trying to kidnap her.

This book, like all of Mary Connealy's, is a WONDERFUL read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Book Review Friday

Recently I read Montana Rose by Mary Connealy. I really enjoyed this book, as I have enjoyed all Mary Connealy books! She is my favorite author.
This book is about Cassie Griffin, whose husband has just died, abandoning her in the West. She had been married to him since she was fifteen years old when both of her parents died. People call her "China Doll" because of her beauty and how she seems to always be perfectly composed and obedient and even cold.
The minute after her husband is buried, the entire town proposes to her because she is just about the only single woman they have seen since moving out West. Mort Sawyer, who runs a very large ranch and is a wealthy man decides that he is going to marry her because he wants the land her husband had owned. His son, Wade Sawyer decides he wants to marry her also, but he is quickly shushed with a look from his abusive father.
Most people in town know to beware of the Sawyers, but when Red Dawson sees Mort attempting to marry a very unwilling Cassie, a woman he has admired from afar since he first saw her, he knows he must do something to save her.
He offers to marry her, and unsure of what to do and still in grief over her old husband's death, Cassie agrees to marry him. They are married on her dead husband's freshly dug grave, and Red pays off her deceased husband's debts. The man had lost her entire fortune buy buying her new silk dresses every year and an expansive mansion, both of which she never asked for.
Red warns Cassie that she will be living in a much smaller home with him and that he will not buy her any more fancy dresses.
Cassie has been accustomed to being forced to obey her husband, and to face his wrath if she does not. Red  notices that she is afraid disobeying him and he realizes what her old husband was like.
Wade Sawyer has also watched Cassie since she came into town and is devastated that he did not marry her. He has been called a weakling by his father his whole life and decides to finally save Cassie from her marriage. He thinks that if only he could kill Red Dawson, he would not be a coward anymore. You see, he knew that Griff, Cassie's last husband, abused her so he felt connected to her because his father abuses him. He becomes crazed and wanders around by the Dawson's house, waiting for the "courage" to kill Red.

This book is great! I wrote a really long description of it, didn't I...? That is because the characters are so well-written that I wanted to share them with you!
What are you reading now?

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!!!
I am sorry I have not posted in a while; I took a break without warning you.
Well, most importantly, today is Christmas, but also, the new movie of Les Miserables comes out today!!!  I was lucky enough to be able to see the movie early, so I have already seen it.  I will review it for Broadway Tuesday today.
This movie was incredible! I LOVED it! It was just as amazing as I thought it would be and I cannot wait to see it again soon.
The effects and set were amazing and seemed particularly historical accurate.  Anything they changed in the plot line, they changed to be more accurate to the original book, so I did not mind that things were changed slightly. I thought all of the details from the book that they added were very special.
The singing for the most part was great. Hugh Jackman played an amazing Jean Valjean and I think he is now my favorite Jean Valjean.  Anne Hathoway was a great Fantine and as I have heard, she really cut her hair short for the part which is a big commitment that I don't know I would have done. Her voice was very pretty and her acting was very good. I did not like Russel Crowe as Javert. He did better than I thought he would, but his singing was very poor in my opinion. Just about any other Javert would have been better for me. I do not like Sasha Baren Cohen as a person but his acting as Thenardier was fitting of the character. I personally think Geoffrey Rush or Johnny Depp would have fit the part better. Helena Bonham Carter played the part of Madame Thenardier very well. The young Cosette was adorable and her voice was pretty.  I did not enjoy Eddie Redmayne as Marius. To me, he was better than Nick Jonas, but his voice was not very strong or memorable. In my opinion, he was also not as handsome as I think Marius should be. Amanda Seyfried fit the part of Cosette very well. Her voice was good and I preferred her to other Cosettes I have heard. Aaron Tveit was a great Enjolras. I loved him as that role.I have to point out that Hadley Fraser played one of the National Guardsmen and I loved him! I saw him in the 25th concert as Grantaire and he was amazing at that part as well.   Samantha Barks was also in that recording and she was a perfect Eponine in the movie! She is one of my favorites. I do not know the name of the actor who played young Gavroche but he was a very good Gavroche and very adorable.  I am probably leaving out some other actors, but all in all the acting and singing in Les Miserables was amazing.
This movie was AWESOME and I cannot wait to see it again.

Have you seen Les Miserables yet? Did you enjoy it? When will you see it if you haven't yet?

Broadway Tuesday

This weekend on youtube I watched the musical, not the movie, of The Little Mermaid. Let me just say, that I LOVED it!!!! The actors were amazing! The set and costumes were ingenious! The voices were perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all, Sierra Boggess's voice is beautiful no matter what she is singing, but she was perfect for the role of Ariel and acted it beautifully.
Norm Lewis was a very cool Triton.
Sherie Renee Scott is another woman with a very pretty voice and perfected the role of the evil seawitch, Ursula.

The plot was good, so good, that I thought it was better than the movie. I recommend this show to everyone, keeping in mind that although this is a children's show it is great for teens and adults, as well.

I Have Found My New Favorite Meal, I Think

Warning: Noodles and Company did NOT pay me for saying this.

I went to Noodles and Company the other day, ready to order the usual: Wisconsin Mac and Cheese. (Yum!)
Well, when I went in to order, I saw a sign for something new: Barbecue pork mac and cheese. Huh?????
Traditional Wisconsin mac n cheese, slow-braised tender pork, barbecue sauce, and crunchy fried onion strings. Oh yeah.

I ordered it instead, and it may be my favorite meal EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to go there every day now.

"This stuff is so good...It'll make your grandma faint, it'll make your grandpa lose his teeth...it'll make your little baby stand up in his diaper and shout 'I believe, I believe, in the power-'" Whoever guesses what that quote is from gets a big cyber hug from me.
Anyway, have you been to Noodles and Company before? What is your favorite dish there?

Book Friday

Right now I am in the middle of the book The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I'm not sure what to think of this book yet... it is interesting and unlike anything I have really read before. It opens you up to a different culture and is filled with many short stories that are all connected by the four people in the mahjong-playing Joy Luck Club.

What are you reading?

Broadway Tuesday

Recently I was in a production of Picnic by William Inge, playing Millie Owens.
It is about a small, rural town in the 1950s and the main theme is people wanting something that they can't have. Madge Owens is a beautiful young woman who is dating Alan Seymour. Her younger sister, Millie Owens, is an artistic tomboy who wants to be noticed. Hal Carter is a drifter who is taken in by Mrs. Potts, the girls' neighbor. He used to go to school with Alan.
This play is very fun and I enjoyed being in it.

Book Review Monday

Sorry that I didn't post anything last week...I was busy with dress rehearsals.
Today I will tell you what book I am almost finished reading: Mariah's Quest by Dianna Crawford and Sally Laity.

I am really enjoying this. Mariah and her two sisters are indentured servants, each bought by a different person.  Mariah is taken by a man named Colin, who is kind to her but his family is not pleased that he took her. His mother is convinced to allow her to teach her three girls how to be ladies and to play instruments. Later on, Mariah and Colin agree to marry--the trouble is, his mother refuses to let the marriage happen. Colin is drafted away to fight in the military, leaving Mariah alone with his mother and family. He returns months later, scarred by the war. He is blinded and the beautiful Mariah realizes that she needs more than beauty for someone to love her.

So, what have you reading lately?

(Assuming for these performances you can sing adequately, don't have stage fright, and can change  to look like your character. (Unlike in most real-life instances!) )

I would say...I would want to be either Christine in Phantom or Eponine in Les Mis....but also many others!!!!

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Broadway Tuesday

I watched a really cool show called Broadway or Bust a couple of weeks ago that aired on PBS. It was about teenagers from across the country competing to win the prestigious Jimmy Awards in New York City. Performers are judged by how well they perform in their local high school's production and a winner is selected from each region.  The winners then go to New York City and learn some medley numbers to perform in a real Broadway theatre. They also perform solos and are judged by a panel of professionals. One girl and one boy win the entire competition and many audition opportunities are opened to those who performed.
Broadway or Bust focused on a couple of teenagers who were performing at the Jimmy Awards and it showed their progress from the first day of rehearsals for the performance to when the winner is announce.
THIS SHOW IS AMAZING! It represents the theatre community far better than the (in my opinion) stupid TV show Glee.
I hope they film Broadway or Bust next year, also!

Book Review Monday

Today I will review The  Blue Enchantress by MaryLu Tyndall. Here is a book description: "Hope Westcott plunges into Charles Towne society trying to find love and acceptance—but lands herself in trouble. Captain Nathaniel Mason is determined to build his shipping business, and falling in love with Hope doesn't figure into his plans. What will he do when saving Hope means losing everything?"

Here's what I thought: I think I liked this book even better than The Red Siren, the first book in this great series. Hope was a very believable character that I was rooting for throughout the whole story. She struggles with very real problems. I liked Nathaniel very much and thought he was a wonderfully-written character. He was very kind to hope most of the time. MaryLu Tyndall describes her settings so well, I felt like I was with the characters in most of the scenes. I definitely loved this book and it kept me up well into the night because I just couldn't put it down. There are twists after twists in this novel. I would recommend it to friends and family.

Book Review Monday

Today I am going to review a different kind of book...a travel guide. I read The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2011 by Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa.
No, I'm not going to Disney World anytime soon... I just missed Disney World so I decided to read a book about it. I really liked this book. For one, I think it would be helpful for families or couples or groups going to Disney World because it offers useful advice on how to make the cheapest and most efficient vacation to Disney World.
I enjoyed the descriptions of the attractions and hotels that are part of Disney World, and the explanations of    Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Disney Hollywood Studios.
I loved reading all of the interesting facts in this!
Have you ever been to Disney World? What was your favorite part?

Book Review Monday

A while ago I read A Heart Divided by Kathleen Morgan. Here is a book description:

"It is 1878 and the Caldwells and Wainwrights have been feuding for decades. Still, Sarah Caldwell has misgivings when her father pressures her into distracting a ranch hand while he and her brothers rob the Wainwright place. When it becomes clear that hand is actually Cord Wainwright, Sarah realizes she needs to lay low. But Cord spots her in town and, with the sheriff away, makes a citizen's arrest, dragging her off to the Wainwright ranch until the sheriff's return. As the feud boils over, Cord and Sarah make a most inconvenient discovery--they are falling in love. Can they betray their families for love? Or will their families betray them?
Against the beautiful and wild backdrop of the Rocky Mountains comes this sweeping saga of romance, betrayal, and forgiveness from beloved author Kathleen Morgan."

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters in it. Sarah does as her father asks and distracts Cord Wainwright, her family's long-time enemy. However, she never expects to get caught the next day and dragged to Cord's house. He keeps her there in the cellar until the sheriff returns. This book was AMAZING! I have to read the second one in the series now because I loved this one.

Book Review Friday

A while ago I read Surrender the Dawn by MaryLu Tyndall.
Here is a book description: "Baltimore lady Cassandra Channing is determined to support her family by hiring a privateer. Luke Heaton is a handsome rake who is being blackmailed by the British into selling supplies to their ships. Both are caught up in romance amid the intrigues and dangers of the War of 1812."
Here's what I thought:
I loved this book so much! It was a great ending to the Surrender to Destiny series. I was very excited throughout the whole story to see if Cassandra and Luke would surrender to their own destinies. I loved Cassandra; she was a brave and fiery heroine, and Luke was an awesome character. When I read it, I noticed I was feeling the similar emotions to the characters, so I know it was beautifully written. I liked Luke's younger brother a lot. I definitely couldn't wait to finish this book to see what happened to all of these exquisite characters. I would certainly recommend this awesome read to all of my friends and family!!!

This book comes after Surrender the Night, which I reviewed earlier this week.

Does this book look interesting to you? What are you currently reading?

Book Review Monday

Today I am going to review Surrender the Night by MaryLu Tyndall. Here is a brief book description: "Step into a breathtaking novel of adventure and romance set amid the War of 1812. During an assault by an enemy sailor, timid farm girl Rose McGuire is saved by the least likely of heroes—a British Naval Lieutenant. Now that he’s wounded, she’ll have to heal as well as hide him. Alex Reed is being aided and abetted by his enemy—albeit an innocent and attractive one. But he might be doing Rose more harm than good if his presence on her farm is discovered. As their love blooms, trouble looms. Will this couple survive another British invasion?"

Here's what I thought: The best book of the series. I found Rose to be a very real character. Her character was wonderfully written and I admired her very much. Alex Reed was another amazing character whom I totally loved. I found myself staying up well into the night, unable to stop myself from reading and reading and reading this masterpiece! All together, this was an AWESOME book and a must read!
