Star Light Star Bright Quilt-A-Long - Changes in Fabric Requirements!!!!

I am so very sorry to all of you wonderful readers who are planning on participating in the Star Light Star Bright Quilt-A-Long, but this afternoon I found that I made an error in the calculations on the fabrics.  I forgot to add the sashing in the background.  When I found this I literally felt sick.  I can not begin to explain how frustrated and upset I am with myself for making this error.  I wish I could turn back the clock and start over.  But sadly, I can't.

So now, all I can do is try to fix this as best as I can so we can move forward.   Because forgetting the sashing also changes the size of the quilt, I have added some additional block sizes so that we can once again have those wonderful bed size quilts.   So now, you have even more to choose from.

The good news is that if you have already picked your size, the print fabrics are pretty much the same.  It just might mean you are making a different size block.  So for example, the 3 x 3 layout to have a queen now you use the 28" block (a new size) instead of the 32" block.   And there was only a 4 1/2" difference in fabric for the print, so you would just have a little extra strip to add into the binding if you like.

The bad news is that you need more background fabric in all of the projects.  If you are doing the 1 x 1 layouts this is most likely not a big deal.  But as your projects get larger you are looking at a full yard or more extra.   I am so, so, sorry that this will cause some of you to go back to the store again.  If this is causing you a huge issue (like having to pay for additional shipping if you ordered online) please let me know and I will try to fix those problems as best as I can, including paying for your additional shipping.

Again, I am so, so, so, sorry!!!   Please, please, please, do not hesitate to email me with any questions :)

We will fix this together and move forward with the Quilt-A-Long and I promise we are still going to have so much fun!!!!

  1. Hi Melissa! Please don't feel bad, everyone makes mistakes, we are only human after all! You have already given us so much with your quilt-a-long that you are offering for FREE, I can only imagine how many hours you have already put in to this for us! Really in the scheme of things it is really not such a big deal :) I always buy way more background fabric than I need so I have heaps, but I am sure those who will run short will be glad for an excuse to go fabric shopping again!!

  7. You are so sweet! This is yet another reason that I am a huge fan! Don't worry about the mistake, we all make them. It's just a good thing I'm a slacker and didn't buy my fabric yet. ;) Now I can get on it feeling confident.

  11. Thanks for contacting us Melissa. I'm always a bit behind getting myself going on a QAL so I'm sure I'll be able to find some fabric for the sashing. What a great excuse to visit a fabric shop! These things happen so please don't worry.

  12. No issue on my end. I am never sure what size I am going to make, so I always buy extra. :-)

  14. Seriously, Melissa, no need to feel sick! Though, from previous QALs, you definitely have worked out the most efficient way to cut, so there's not much wiggle room in your fabric requirements. :) That said, to those who might be short fabric... the blocks without sashing can make a pretty awesome secondary pattern!

  22. Melissa, these things happen. No worries! And really, when has a quilter ever complained about having to buy more fabric?!?!

  23. Oh, Melissa, please don't berate yourself! In the vast scheme of life, this is a very minor thing. There is not one of us out here who has not made a mistake. What quilter would be upset if he/she had to make another trip to a fabric store or peruse fabric online? The sun will come up tomorrow and life is good. We are all just thankful for all that you do for us and that you are such a kind person.

  24. You are so sweet. I think you did us all a favor as we can use it as another excuse to buy fabric. Don't worry about it. It happens.

  25. I had this same problem with a missouri star quilt co tutorial. Such a pain, and when I spoke with Jenny, all she said was - well the tutorials are just a guideline, you know how I just shoot from the hip. At least you are apologised for the error and offered some sound solutions and ideas. I appreciate it - and will now go out and buy some more fabric and fudge a few small areas.

  26. Melissa - we all make mistakes. Especially when it comes to doing large amounts of quilting math. Ugh. Really - it was amazing of you to provide SO MANY options and do all the math for us. And I bet in most cases, people will be fine making a slightly smaller quilt. I just took a look at my plans. Turns out the baby quilt I'll be making (2x2) is only 2" smaller than what I thought. No need to purchase extra fabric. Actually, it will leave me with a few extra fun scraps to work with somewhere down the line. Or maybe to turn into a matching pillow that momma can put on a rocking chair in the room? In any case, I'm super excited to get started!

  27. Well, who doesn't go back to the fabric store anyway? You've simply provided us all with a smashing excuse to head back for more! Woohoo! Actually, I already bought mine and did get extra because I'm weird like that, so I'm still good to go.

  28. oh melissa honey, don't be so hard on yourself. i doubt there is one of your followers who hasn't made a quilting error!!!!! me included. i am a pro at mis cutting, mis measuring strips............i rip, i re-do, i get frustrated...........but i keep on trying. learning isn't easy, but it's certainly worth it when you give the efforts of your labors. so just re measure or re figure, adjust, fix the goof and carry on. you are certainly allowed a mistake now and then. no one will think badly of you. cheer up, it's really ok

  30. My godness you are so kind and generous, but what would someone ask for more? You are already giving a free pattern, your free time and everything else that goes with the hard work of figuring things out for every one; so lady: you are just to Great. don't worry; as quilters every one should know that errors do happen.

  31. Welcome to the human race where we all make mistakes, big and small. I suspect that most of us are still gathering, deciding, and dreaming about our soon-to-be-quilts, so we can still adjust pretty easily. Don't beat yourself up for being so generous with your time and talents! And thank you for your always upbeat, inspirational, and friendly posts!

  32. Don't worry, I am never that prepared. I haven't even begun to look for fabric. I have written a pattern for a class before and figuring the fabric requirements always makes me crazy nervous. Thanks for doing so much work for us:)
