I Can't Get Enough

I just can't get enough of Oakcrest or camping. My good friend Emily was a camper at Oakcrest when I was a counselor. That has been such a neat thing that we shared. She gets how cool and special Oakcrest was. Tonight we went to the mountains and had a cook out and reminisced about camp. I brought my scrapbook that I made of my girls and the staff. Let's just say that my scrap booking skills have improved a bit since then. Let me just say that colored paper and crazy cutting of the pictures is not something that should be looked at. Emily was nice and didn't laugh at my scrapbook. She brought her memorabilia from camp. She actually knew some of my campers, it was fun to hear what they have done with their lives. We tried to get the kids to sing camp songs but they preferred playing in the fire and running up a hill, I can't imagine why. The husbands were nice and played with the kids so Emily and I could chat. We had a really great time. It is fun to share something so special with someone who was there and understands.

Eventhough my scrapbook was not much to look at, I did do some great journaling. I must have done the journaling right after camp got over. It is fun to remember all of the silly things that we said. Like Woo woo, a pig of course, meow meow roomie, meow meow. Good times!

Girls Camp

This past week was girls camp. We went to Brighton Meadows. It was a beautiful location, I am thinking a cabin there would be great. (Someday) The girls were great. We have the best YW ever. They all get along, they love each other. It doesn't matter the age, they all hang out together. The theme was Incredi Girl, find the power within. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Cyndie Dobson wrote a beautiful song about the theme. It is called He Strengthens Me. It was a very inspiring camp. I realized that I need to step it up spiritually. The girls and leaders help me to want to strive to be better and try harder. It was a wonderful time with great camp directors. I feel so blessed to have been able to go. We had one night with a lot of thunder and lightening. We stayed in cars for a couple of hours waiting for it to pass. We had a great time telling embarrassing stories. I learned a lot about the girls in my car. I love my calling and I feel so grateful to learn from the wonderful girls I get to serve.

The girls made this lovely style for me. They wanted to do a mohawk but it just didn't work. They covered my hair in hair spray and put clothes pins to hold it in place. They then colored my hair with makers. I was a lovely sight.

We have had a bubble game chewing contest for the past four girls camps. Ingrid was the winner this year. It really is fun and gross all at the same time. A few years ago the girls decided that they wanted to have someone lick the big gross pile of chewed up gum. We put the chewed gum on a plate and then it can be licked. The girls actually hold tryouts for the licking part. They are too crazy.

We Remember of Camp Oakcrest

I went to a 50 year reunion for Oakcrest Beehive Camp. I worked at Oakcrest in 1990 as a counselor and in 1991 as an Assistant Director. Oakcrest is a beehive camp in Kamas. The girls that attend camp are from the stakes in Salt Lake valley. We began in June with the first group of girls and we went to the second week of August. Each week we would get a new group of girls. There were about 10 to 15 girls in a group. The girls would come up on Monday morning and leave Friday afternoon. We slept in cabins, there were flushing toilets, showers and a huge lodge where we would eat each meal. Of course we sang songs after every meal. We had a mutual on Tuesday nights with great speakers. We would have a cook out followed by a testimony meeting on Wed. The counselors got to be good friends. I still keep in touch with some of them after all of these years.
My experiences of camp are hard to explain because it was such a unique opportunity that not many understand. It was the most spiritual place to work. Everything we did we tried to
have the spirit with us. We taught the girls that they are special and that they are daughters of God. The songs that we sang brought the spirit. Many girls felt the spirit for the first time at camp. When I went back a few weeks ago I was still able to feel the same powerful spirit that I would feel when I worked there. This was a great experience that prepared me for my mission. I was truly blessed to have been apart of such a special place.

These are my friends from 1991 when I was an AD. Sunshine was the other AD and Windsong was a counselor. Sunshine was the one that got me hooked on John Denver.

This is in the lodge. There was a wonderful program put on by the 2008 staff. Let me just say the songs have changed a little and so have the moves of the counselors. These are my great friends, Tiggy, Syosset, Sneaker, Banana, Bonzai, and Trumpet. It was so fun to see them again and catch up on the last 18 years.

Here we are in the Treehut. This is where the Director, AD's, and Kitchen staff live. This is where we would have our staff meetings. There were so new couches and some things were a little different.

The Best Day Ever!

I took Parker and Kaden to Sams Club to meet Darron Williams. They were so cute and so excited to go. Kaden had a sleepover the night before, Parker washed their D Will shirts so they would be clean and ready to go in the morning. When we got to Sams Club it was not as packed as I thought it would be, we only stood in line for about 5 mins. The boys were so excited they couldn't stand it. I bought them each a ball for D Will to sign. They decided that they will just put the ball on the shelf in their room and then they can have other team members sign the ball. When they got to D Will they handed him their balls and got a picture with him then the handlers shooed them away quickly. The boys decided that a signed ball was not enought so they stood in line again to have D Will sign their shirts. Then the Jazz Bear came and they wanted to stand in line again to see the Bear. It was so fun to watch them be so excited. They both said, " it was the best day of my life."

Catching Up

It had been awhile since I have had time to post. It has been so much fun having my family here for a few weeks. We always love to have them here and unfortunately it isn't very often so we make the most of it while we can. We went to the Round Up. I had never gone before but it was a lot of fun and I think we will make it a yearly event. We also took the kids to Kennecott, which was really neat. We went took the kids a long time ago but they were too little to remember anything. They all thought it was neat to see the pit and the huge trucks. It was fun to watch them be interested in what is going on around them in their world. The adults did a lot of visiting with eachother while the kids played. We had a great time!! Thanks for coming Spencer, Andrea, Michelle and Travis and all the kids we love you guys.
