Elayna had her 6 month appointment on Monday, the 16th. She weighs 17 lbs, 13 oz, and is 26.5 inches long. Her height and weight are in the 75th percentile, but her head circumference is only in the 50th percentile. No worries. She is doing great, and takes her immunization shots fairly well. When Katie found out Elayna had to have shots, she asked to leave. The waiting room has a movie room, as well as a kind lady that just sits in the waiting room. The lady tries to keep the kids happy, watch kids that are staying in the movie room, and just keep the patients waiting appeased. She's nice. So Katie watched a movie while Elayna saw the doctor and got her shots.
On Tuesday, my mom's aunt Jean was visiting my parents. Katie, Elayna and I went over to visit. Amanda, Junior, and Abby (2 weeks older than Katie) also came over. Katie and Abby were playing downstairs, and Jean remembered that her pills were just sitting on top of her suitcase, so I went downstairs, shut the door, and told the girls not to go in that room. Well, about an hour later, Katie and Abby came upstairs, naked. They had evidently decided to go to the bathroom. Which was great, because Katie hadn't done that before at Mom's house. There is usually too much going on.
Well, Amanda and I went down to get their clothes and noticed, you guessed it, pills on the floor. Katie had also mentioned that she had makeup on her face, which after much prodding, we realized were bath beads that they had broken open and smeared on their faces. (Actually, Abby said she ate some, but we couldn't verify this) So, panicking a bit at this point, we got all the pills and had Jean verify what was missing. Luckily they were in those little week-long pill boxes so it wasn't too hard.
We called Poison Control (they are great, by the way) and told them that one diabetic medication called Glucaphog (no idea how to spell it) was missing. Ed told me to find out what all the other medication was, and call him back. Because, get this, there is a certain type of diabetic medicine that just happens to be fatal to children! Agh! So, really panicking now, we get the list of medicine and call him back. Thankfully, that medication wasn't on Jean's list of medicines, but it was still really scary. Ed told us to watch for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic or unusual activity in the girls. After I got off the phone with him, I went to tell Amanda what we needed to look for, and she was crying. And that's when it hit me. This could have been so much worse! What a blessing that they didn't have any side effects (I don't know if Abby did, but Katie didn't) and didn't die or something.
About the time I got off the phone with Ed, Ryan and Jay showed up with the Chinese food for lunch. Hopefully the girls understood how serious it was. They had to sit on the couches, without talking to anyone, or playing with anything for about 30-45 minutes. They were still sitting there after we had checked for the pills, called Poison Control, checked the pills again, called Poison Control AGAIN, both mothers had started crying, and their fathers came to help.
Not an experience I want to relive. Unfortunately, I'm sure this will not be the last time I call Poison Control.
Ryan is so great. He didn't have to work on Friday, so he let me go shopping for about 3-4 hours. I'm not normally a shopping person, but it was really nice to wander around, find great deals (almost everything was 50% off), and just be by myself. (5 shirts, the most expensive being $6. A cute black skirt, some running shoes, and a pair of dress pants for Ryan) I shopped, had some lunch and yummy frozen custard, and went home. Then, on Saturday, Katie and I went grocery shopping while he watched Elayna. We didn't get the house clean, but meh, it isn't like it's really that important, right? And Ryan keeps telling me, we can always do it next week.
Elayna is not very fun to nurse right not. I think this is what goes through her mind when she nurses: I'm HUNGRY! Where is my food?! Oh good, there it is. Wait! What was that noise? Oh well, I'll keep eating. What was that!? Let me look. (at this point I will try to force her head back towards eating) Hey! That's my head! What do you think you are doing? I was looking around!
Eat more. Oh wait, is that Mom up there? Hi mom! How are you? I'm just eating. Did Katie say something? ....
you get the idea. If I'm in a dark room, just me and her, and she can't hear anyone talking, or making noise, she might just eat the whole time. Only 6 more months of this. :)

Going Private
A couple of things:
I am going to make this blog private on March 31. That means I will need your email address to invite you to read my blog. If I normally notify you by email that I have a new post up, don't worry about sending my your email address. Otherwise, let me know by commenting or emailing me. Thanks.
I have been making some changes on my site. I've added a list of blogs I visit, which will list the most recent at the top.
Ryan fixed my posts, so if they said "Continue reading this post" and you tried clicking it, and nothing changed, that is fixed. I will only be putting part of the post on the main page. To read the rest of the post, click on "continue reading this post".
Thanks for reading! I'm hoping to do a new post each week, so keep checking back.

2 movies for your enjoyment
This is a video of Katie dancing. She cracks me up. I hadn't seen the hand movements, or heard the song before. Come to think of it, I haven't seen them since, either. Strange.
And this is Elayna talking to me. She's so cute.

Small things
The other morning, Ryan and I were trying to sleep in (Ha!) and told Katie to go play in the other room. Well, soon Elayna was awake, and we told her to go talk to Elayna for a while, in the hopes we could rest for just one minute more.
Well, soon I heard music coming from their room. Odd, since the mobile that has music is on the FAR side of the crib. I didn't think Katie could reach it. I went in, and this is what I found:
Apparently, Katie climbed in so she could talk and play with Elayna. Elayna didn't seem stepped on or upset, thankfully. They were both having fun.
Elayna was doing a groovy dance in her high chair this afternoon at lunch. She is excited about eating. She LOVES the sippy cup with water. I will hold the cup for her, and she will grab one of my fingers to bring the cup towards her. We put Cheerios on her tray, and she is trying to grab them, we can tell, but she hasn't quite got there yet. Ryan loves Club crackers, so we put one on Elayna's tray. She grabbed it and just looked at it. I pushed her hand towards her mouth, and she opened her mouth and tried to chew on it. Cute.
Katie is really into pretending. She has a bright turquoise hair clip that she carries around with her and she calls it candy. She will bring it out, and ask if we want some candy. She also likes to turn long objects into swords or wands. She likes to fight with the sword, and turn people into animals with the wand. When playing by herself, I will often hear her say things like, "Otay evybody" and "someone come get this". It reminds me of the Family Circus cartoon with the "ghost" people called "Someone", "No one", and "Not Me". Okay, I don't really remember what their names were, but it was similar to that.
Katie--"I just walking around she", when told not to step on Elayna.
Elayna doesn't use a pacifier or suck her thumb to go to sleep. She usually just falls asleep. During the day, however, she has her thumb, or finger, or toy, or blanket in her mouth almost constantly. She probably sucks on her fingers after I lay her down to sleep, and that is how she soothes herself. I don't know. I'm just the mom.
I painted my kitchen wall yellow. I had been thinking about doing it for a while, then a week or two ago, I decided it was going to be done. No matter the consequences. So of course, I went to go pick up the paint on a day that I had 20 minutes to do so. And it took 45 mins. And I was supposed to be at the church, opening it up, so they couldn't get in until someone else with keys showed up.
Then, I put the tape up, and painted the edges with a brush. (Mom and Dad were great through all this, since I called them and asked them about 50 questions, just to make sure I was doing it right. I also borrowed their ladder, and drop cloths.)
The first time I rolled the paint on, Ryan was watching, and he mentioned that I might be going a little fast. Swish, swish, get it done. Luckily I didn't have hardly any paint on the roller, so it didn't splatter everywhere. That time.
As I was doing the second coat, I had a lot of paint on the roller, and thought I was going slow, but tink, tink, tink, I could hear paint falling on the drop cloth 10 feet below. (I have arched ceilings) I looked at my arm, and I could see little yellow flecks all over it. Oh well.
I think it looks really good. I am pretty proud to say that after I took the tape off, there was no need for touch-ups.
I was reading a story to Katie, and it had a picture of a firefighter in it. I asked Katie, "Did you know that Uncle Ryan is a firefighter?" and she said, "My Daddy?", and I said, "No, UNCLE Ryan". "Oh, Ryot's Daddy?" "Yes". (Ryot is the dog)
Katie likes to wander around and just sing. The other day I heard her singing, "I know my name, I know my name. Katie Irma Bowman".

Painting
I let Katie finger paint the other day. This is how she painted:
It was actually pretty interesting to see her progress with painting. I first put dabs of color on the newspaper, and told her to use her fingers to paint on the paper. This picture looked very neat, and I think I did a lot of it:
Then, we introduced a sponge, and she would draw a picture, then smear the paint around with the sponge until it looked like a water color:
Then, I basically said, "Go for it!" and she went all out. She put her fingers in the containers, and brought out huge gobs of paint that she then smeared all over the paper, and the newspaper underneath. The containers are now useless as pristine colors, but I think she really had fun with it. It was really fun to watch her.
This is what she painted:
Then, after clean-up, she took a nap, and decided that she needed to paint again. "No, not right now. We already did that this morning". The next day, she asked again, and again, and again. It took her about 3-4 days to quit asking. I guess if I was a better mom I'd let her do it more often, but I'm thinking outside in the summer time is a better time for that.
For this picture, I kept asking her to "grab her toes", and "where are your toes?". She was pretty good about getting them when I asked her too. Also, if you look close at her ears, you'll see we pierced her ears too! On Jan 22nd, we were up in Orem eating dinner with Ryan's parents, and since we were close to the mall, we decided that night would be the best time to do it. We prepped Katie for a while first, and it was awful to see Elayna cry when I held her head. Well, and you know, when they actually pierced her ears. But they are so cute, and they don't seem to bother her at all.
One night, Katie was crying for us to come lay down with her, and she kept saying, "Mooommmmmmy, Daaadddddy, Mooommmmmy! Daadddddy!" and then we heard, "Sooommmeboodddy!" I had to laugh at that.
Katie has the cutest expression. I will go lay down by her, or give her a hug, or she will be looking at Elayna with this look of complete love on her face. It melts my heart each time I see it.
When singing Old McDonald, I sing the song, and Katie fills in the blank with an animal of her choice. This is what happened the other day:
Me-"Old McDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O. And on the farm he had a...."
Katie-" ....DRAGON...!!"
Me-"What? a Dragon??" Okay. "With a ROAR here, and a ROAR there, here a ROAR, there a ROAR, everywhere a ROOOOAAARRR." She thinks it is hilarious!
I just remembered: When I used to burp Elayna, she would have her little arms folded on top of my shoulder, and she would just rest her head on her arms. It was so cute!
Ryan and I were talking about how we wanted to visit the Draper Temple Open House. We asked Katie if she wanted to go see the temple and she excitedly said yes! Later that week, I told Katie that Ryan and I were going to go attend the temple. Which means we will be doing sacred ordinances. She said, "It is open now?" "Can I go?" I replied that it was something just Mom and Dad can do, and she responded with "when I am 5, I will go to the temple, and Elayna, when she is 5 she can go too!" I explained she wouldn't be able to attend the temple until she was 12, but it is cute she is excited to see the temple.
Elayna eats carrots, green beans, peas, sweet potatoes, and yellow squash baby food now. She loves to drink out of her sippy cup. She is also obviously very interested in all our food.
Elayna turned 6 months on Feb 7th. She has found her toes and her hands, and entertains herself with them, for a moment anyways. She has also been sitting up this week. After we prop her up, of course.
They are both growing up so fast! :(
