It's October!

And i absolutely love Octobers. Whee! =D

Reasons why i love the month of October:

  1. There's Children's day! - Yes, i know i'm way over-age to be celebrating this day of fun but there's a little child inside everyone of us, no? We run to our parents when we're sad/hurt. We play silly games. We still hope Santa Claus exists. And admit it, we'd still cry like a baby sometimes. I think kids nowadays are growing up too damn fast for their own good. Kids are suppose to be the kings and queens of being awesome. So why can't we celebrate what we once were, and still a tiny bit are?
  2. Fall begins (in some parts of the world)! Granted i've only experience all but one autumn so far, nonetheless, whenever i think of October, i think of autumn and the golden leaves, perfect moderate weather, quiet serenity of falling leaves. Ahhh... i miss Vancouver.
  3. Rainy season in JB! - Let it rain, let it rain, let it rain~ over the roof, on the windows and all around! What's not to love about the comfy feeling of rain enveloping us like a soft cottony blanket accompanied by the pitter patter of rainfall?
  4. Oktoberfest! - Have u ever heard of January/May/August/watevermonthfest?! Nope. Don't think so. This shows just how much October is worth celebrating. lol. Now, if only i'm in Germany. Nor Nor!! Can i follow u in ur luggage please?
  5. World FOOD Day! Yeah! United Against Hunger is this year's theme. We often overlook the little things in life like a simple cup of Milo, or a piece of roti canai, or even a grain of rice. We are too fortunate to realise what it feels like to be hungry even for a day, while disasters strike across the globe lately. Imagine, what it feels like to be hungry children all alone in the world. So instead of having a McValue meal this month, how about donating that money for a better cause?
  6. Breast Cancer Awareness Month - crucial for all ladies and guys. Yes, u heard me. Guys. Though far less common, it is possible for men to develop breast cancer. Breast cancer accounts for 40,000 deaths a year. Stats may show that heart diseases is the leading killer among women, but that's for those aged 60 and above! Breast cancer is actually the #1 cancer in women between the ages of 20 and 59. Which is why ladies, we should pay attention to early detection. I love how as female groups around the world come out in pink force, various landmarks will be in Pink too! Sweet! =)

I am a

slave for the internet

Yup, you heard me.
There's no denying it.
Being away from the internet makes me feel stupid.
Without the internet, life feels half empty.
Not being online makes me anxious.

Damn. I hate this.

Caught in the middle

of an editor and a translator is the technical writer. Which is me, and that's what I have been suffering for the past week.

Lesson of day:

Technical writers can't do anything when they don't know the language in the text produced, and yet, they've got themselves a darn meticulous but super-clueless editor editing their every word.

These editors are really out to make my work life a living hell. They edit, and edit, and edit, and can't stop editing to please themselves! Gosh. What is their problem eh? One simple English text, has to be edited 7 times and still that's not enough. They say that's all today, but when tomorrow comes, they tell you there's more changes to make! Fine, editing is your job, I understand. But why can't you tell me to edit BEFORE I send for translations?!?! Wth...

And the worst is when you meet an editor who has no idea what she's editing!

Tell me, what's the difference between daylight saving time & summer time?
Answer: NOTHING! DST (US English) = Summer Time (UK English)!

Such a small thing, my editors highlight all the translated summer time and query where's the daylight saving time translation. OMG...

And so, I have to act as the really stupid middle man and query the translators back (according to protocol). gah.. =.="

I got so mad about the DST, I went Googling about it. haha.. Guess what?

When clocks spring forward, people lose sleep, have more heart attacks, and might not even save energy!

12 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Daylight Saving Time

Click here to find out more!

1. Officially, it's "daylight saving time," not "daylight savings time". But don't feel bad if you thought there was a final 's' on "saving"; far more people Google the incorrect phrase than the correct one.

2. Daylight saving time has mixed effects on people's health. Transitions into and out of DST can disturb people's sleeping patterns and make them more restless at night. Night owls tend to be more bothered by the time changes than people who like mornings, so say Finnish researchers.

3. There's a spike in heart attacks during the first week of daylight saving time. The loss of an hour's sleep may make people more susceptible to an attack. When DST ends in the fall, heart attacks briefly become less frequent than usual.

4. People are safer drivers during daylight hours, and researchers have found that DST reduces lethal car crashes and pedestrian strikes. In fact, a study concluded that observing DST year-round would annually prevent about 195 deaths of motor vehicle occupants and about 171 pedestrian fatalities.

5. A U.S. law signed by President George W. Bush in 2005 extended the length of daylight saving time by four weeks. It now begins at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March. It ends on the first Sunday in November.

6. Also in 2005, Kazakhstan abolished daylight saving time, citing negative health effects. The country's government reportedly calculated that 51.6 percent of Kazakhs responded badly to the time change.

7. Many other countries observe daylight saving time, but not all do so on the same day. That can create confusion for international travelers, business communications, and more.

8. Daylight saving can also cause confusion close to home. In March 2007, a Pennsylvania honor student was mistakenly accused of threatening his school with a bomb. He had actually called an automated line to get info about scheduled classes. Someone else made the bomb threat an hour later.

9. Two states—Arizona and Hawaii—and four U.S. territories—American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands—don't observe daylight saving time. Indiana adopted DST in 2006.

10. Daylight saving time was first used during World War I, as part of an effort in the United States and other warring countries to conserve fuel. In theory, using daylight more efficiently saves fuel and energy because it reduces the nation's need for artificial light.

11. The first American to advocate for daylight saving was Benjamin Franklin. He realized in 1784 that many people burned candles at night yet slept past dawn in the summer, wasting early-morning sunlight.

12. The effect of DST on energy use has changed over time and varies from place to place. Experts even disagree on whether DST still saves the nation energy. But so many people like to "spring forward" that it might be hard for officials to end the tradition, even if they determined it's wasteful.

Oops! This is getting too long. Oh wells, I'm the only one reading these days anyways. (*hugs* for Ming Eng, Margie & Allison!) hehehe =)

Technical writing rocks!

And it's not me saying this. Never in the past 3 months working as a technical writer have i ever felt that way, till today! All thanks to Barney, who showed me the "light". lol.

According to Investopedia in this article, this daily 8.30-5.30 job that i dread waking up to and yet live for every weekday is actually a high-paying, low-stress job! *woots* =D

You know how it goes after graduation... Everyone and anyone starts coming up to you with just ONE thing in mind:

WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?

It was a torture then, when i was jobless after uni; and still a pain in the neck even after getting a job. =.=" Every time I try to satisfy someone's eager question about my current status after my long awaited graduation, i get a puzzled look or sound in return! gah...

So today, once and for all i'm gonna copy and paste, yes i'm doing plagiarism in broad daylight, to officially introduce my über-cool career (at the moment) in a nutshell.

Technical Writer

In this high-tech age, new groundbreaking tools, mobile devices or innovative gadgets are released on practically a daily basis. Obviously, someone has to write about these ingenious doodads and complicated thingamabobs. That's where technical writers come into play.

Although they sometimes face tight deadlines, technical writers typically enjoy flexible hours and a comfortable, quiet workspace. Quite a few of them have an enviable 10-second commute - from their bedroom to their desk. Because all they need is a phone and a computer with an internet connection, many technical writers work from home. (If only i had that kinda luxury. haha..)

What's more is that technical writers are extremely high in demand. As technical companies continue to release pioneering new products, someone has to transform their complex technical-ese into everyday language the average customer can comprehend. Technical writers generally earn between $47,000-98,000 a year.

----------------

And so, after reading this, I'm now totally hyped and have decided to stick to my current job till i can get into the other high-paying, low-stress jobs (i.e.: Physical therapist, Computer software engineer, Civil engineer, or a Massage therapist!) hehehe. =D Obviously, that's bullcrap, cos I can never ever be an engineer to save my life. Maybe a massage therapist?! hmmm... lol.

Well folks, that's all i have for today. Got to head to bed now to avoid falling asleep on the job tmr. Note to self: i love my job, i love my job, i love my job. =)

Bubbles

Today, as i stepped into the shower to take a bath, a random thought popped into my head:

"When was the last time I played with bubbles?"

Sadly, i could not remember when was that. I had to go way back... back to the days when i was young and *ahem* innocent. A time when i would take long showers, played with water till i wrinkle like raisins, make bubbles in the shower with all the soapy suds and giggle myself silly at the sight of rainbows appearing right in front of me.

What happened to that girl i wonder? What happened to having fun at the oddest moments, or laughing at the silliest things, or forgetting that any problem exists when a chocolate is presented. Where did the girl who listened and hung on to every word mummy says went to? Why have things change just because i get older and time seems shorter with the passing of each year? Hmm...

Anyway, for the first time in years, i played with bubbles in the shower today. And it felt good!

So, when was the last time u played with bubbles? =)

Is it a boon or a bane...

to be her?

Louise Ball

Who's she, you may ask.

Louise Ball is a real-life 15 year old sleeping beauty! Not Sleeping Beauty as in a Disney princess character who sleeps after being pricked by a spindle and can only be awoken by a kiss from her Prince Charming - although i think she's pretty enough to be a sleeping princess, as compared to me - but she's a real human being suffering from a rare condition called Klein Levin syndrome, which is more commonly known as the Sleeping Beauty syndrome.

Was pretty excited to learn there's actually a name to the hobby (ok more like the daily routine) i do every day, till i learn that this pretty little thing here can sleep for days *gasps in envy* and cannot be awakened. Her record of being in bed is 13 days!! Can you imagine that?? Imagine escaping this trouble-filled world we live in for days just by dozing off. Hmm.. one of her dreams alone could be an entire season of Grey's Anatomy! Interesting~

While in the story, Sleeping Beauty has Prince Charming to kiss her to break the spell, the poor girl here doesn't live a fairy-tale life with a happily-ever-after ending. For now, there is no cure for her condition.

So, is it a boon or a bane? Due to her special condition, her family members say she has slept through life’s important events, such as family vacations and school tests (err..). Well, those are the important ones... what about skipping life's unimportant events such as mundane house chores, or boring history classes, or tiresome meaningless small talks at wedding dinners. Now, that would be pretty fun kan? (No offence please to anyone suffering from this Sleeping Beauty syndrome.)

Article from here.

ps: I really do hope doctors find a cure soon.
