Baju Kurung and Snowman

I DID IT! I DID IT!! I DID IT!!!

I want to make snowman and snow angels!!!
I want to make snowballs and throw at Joe!
I want to take lots of pretty pics in the snow!!

It snowed for the 2nd time!!

Joe and I were watching an old black/white Christmas Carol movie in the common block when it happened. It was so pretty, it felt surreal! The sky was dark, snow was falling gently (like in the movies!), and street lights were shining on the lovely snow... And with the Christmas Carol movie playing, it felt so Christmasy!!! ^.^ The instant the movie was over, we rushed outdoors. It felt nice, albeit a little chilly without a jacket. haha.. And on the way back, we had a super-mini snowball fight. We were rolling snowballs with our bare hands (cos we had no gloves with us) and throwing snowballs like kids! lol.. We played and took pictures till we couldn't feel our hands! And that was just 30 minutes and 3 snowballs. haha..

Our Resident Advisor, Andrea from Jamaica.

Snow reflected off the ground!

The cold numbness was so terrible, i couldn't feel my hands even when under running hot water, and over hot burning stove! Nevertheless, barely a few seconds of slightly warmed hands, Joe said we should grab this opportunity to go out in the snow in our baju kurung! Since i made a pact with Mel, and Joe made one with me, we both braved the cold and did it! haha.. And so here it is, the long awaited picture.

This is for you Mel.

I think seeing snow for the first time in our lives, sort of made us very hyper. After taking a hot bath, we're out again at 1am making a SNOWMAN!!! Crazy but fun!! Because Christina was out studying, so it was just Joe and I making the snowman..Well, it was more like me squatting down making the snowman, while Joe just run around ordering me to get snow from here, snow from there, and squirting water on the snowball. sheesh! hahaha.. And after 1 hour and 1 failed attempt, Mr. Snowman was born! Christina came back just in time to accessorize and take pics with him. haha..

Me making snowman!

My 1st snowman!

Mr. Snowman 1.
He's made with choc M&M eyes, and leans dangerously to the left.
It's no wonder he crashed a few minutes later... =(

Mr. Snowman 2!
Made this time with almond eyes and bottle caps buttons. =D

Our snowman made a fashion crime wearing a cap - looks like a China snowman. lol..

Joe and snowman with a better snowcap!

Me and my snowman!

Roomies of 2101 with their snowman! hehe.

Our snowman guarding our entrance. He's really small.. hehe.

The entire night was a truly remarkable experience and I'm glad Joe was there to make it more memorable. Only she could make me go out in the snow at an ungodly hour just to build a snowman!! lol..

However, this wasn't the end. My worst experience was about to happen. I woke up the next morning to a sharp and burning pain in my left hand. To my horror, my 3 last left fingers were sore and swollen. It was just a little prickly feeling the night before.. but it worsen in the morning. It might have been a very mild superficial frost bite!!! Gosh.. Thank god it was nothing too serious. It was so weird though, cos only 3 of my left fingers had it. Anyways, after 2 days of wrapping it up in icy cold towel, the swell subsided and my fingers felt alive again. =)

I wasn't the only one with a terrible experience. Joe had a worse one.. Her laptop crashed the same morning!!! It was working fine that night and suddenly it wouldn't start up properly in the morning. And it became worse by the hour... In the end, it wouldn't even start up. Poor thing. Both of us tried to repair it ourselves, but to no avail. We followed precisely as the online help said, but they didn't tell us wat to do if we faced some differences. We were that close, yet so far! So, in the end, instead of making it right, it became worse. haha!! Guess we're not meant to be IT technicians. hehe. Then Joe decided to buy a new Dell laptop here cos it was so much cheaper. But sadly, it would take them 2 weeks to deliver it, and we didn't have that amount of time! So, all her hopes of buying a new one were totally dashed. We worried and cracked our brains for nothing at all! lol.. Just hope her hard disk is recoverable.. all her 4 months and more worth of pictures are all in there!!! Poor Joe..

Anyhow, both of us have experienced everything "wintry" we could in just 2 days. hahaha.. To end my post today, here's a picture of snowflakes! I saw snowflakes for the first time ever i
n the middle of the night, outside my window pane. Enjoy!! hehehe..

You can't see the snowflake pattern here. But in person, u can really see the pattern clearly - like those on X'mas cards. Very lovely they are!

First Snow

This morning when i woke up, i rmb the room was dark as the curtains were still drawn and the first thing i did was to rush straight to the washroom cos the only reason i'm up so early was to pee. lol. After relieving myself, i wanted to crawl back into bed, back under the comfort of my warm blanket, but something told me to check my comp for any msn messages. True enough there were 3 tabs - one guy asking when i'm coming back, vincent replying my offline msgs, and then.. there was Mary (who brought me to the Aquarium) who left me a msg saying
IT'S SNOWING!!!!!
Joe and I were planning our remaining 13 days in Canada last night, and today, we were supposedly going to Gastown for souvenir shopping. Being in Vancouver, we can't go out without checking the weather forecast before hand. So, last night when we checked, the weather forecast said it was going to rain and snow today. Everyone who are in Europe have been telling me it's snowing wherever they are. And just the other day, Norven was complaining, why it isn't snowing yet in Vancouver. hahaha.. But rain and snow?? We totally couldn't imagine what it would be like. But the thought of snow was enough to make us excited yet worried. haha... Little did i know, when i threw open the curtains right after seeing Mary's msg, watching snow fall is the most breathtaking experience ever!!!

You know how you've seen real snow and fake snow on TV all your life.. You more or less know how it is - white small puffy drops falling softly on to the colourful world. But this morning, what i saw wasn't exactly how it is on TV. On tv, u see the first snow is usually dropping or floating gently down... The ones here... they were FLYING!!! The winds were so strong, the white snow drops were flying right across my window! lol.. I was totally speechless as i watched the scenes outside my window. I could only stare at the snow for like minutes and thinking to myself.. "Wah..It's finally snowing!! My very first snow!!! I can finally take a pic of me wearing Mel's baju kurung present in the snow!!" hahaha!!! Well, that's what Mel promised me to do: "Pakai baju kurung saya dan tangkap gambar dalam salji ye!" I have no idea wat made me promise her i would do that, as crazy as it sounds. Even though i know it was a joke (altho when it comes to Mel, it may be for real), but I was thinking, how many times in your life can u see snow and wear a baju kurung out in the snow?... And so, hanya untukmu Mel, saya akan memakai baju kurung dalam salji! hahaha..

After the random crazy thoughts, the first thing i did was to take out my camera and snap like crazy - as though the snow's gonna melt anytime soon. haha.. Then i opened my door wondering if the rest of the house knows about the first snow! Joe's room was dark, so i ran over and knock on her door shouting IT'S SNOWING!!!! She opened the door with her sleepy face not really registering wat i just said, so i had to tell her again to her face - IT'S SNOWING outside!! Immediately, we both went to her window, where i continued to amaze myself with the snow. haha..

Wanna know how it looked like? Here are the pictures!!

My very first snow picture!
This is the view when i opened my curtains. ^^

If you didn't see the ground, you'd think it's just heavy rain.

One thing about Vancouverites, come rain or snow.. they just walk without any umbrellas.

View of our block's common area from Christina's room.

Isn't it pretty?? hehe..

I really love this white house opposite my room.
Even more so when it's covered in snow!

Erm.. if u were waiting to see the baju kurung in snow pic, sorry guys, i haven't done that! Because the snow wasn't really frozen.. it melts the moment it touches anything!!! It's like rain actually.. So sad... =( Hence, i banished all thoughts of stepping out in the pretty kurung under rain/snow so early in the morning. hehe.. But fret not! The forecast said there'll be more snow next week! By then, i'll definitely go out and take that pic!! Just wait and see. hee..

And because of the weird weather, Joe n I also decided not to go out at all.. Thus, we continued to watch movies and dramas in our rooms the entire day. I'm currently watching Bad Love starring Kwon Sang Woo. lol! Oh, i found this perfect website to watch subbed korean, japanese, taiwan, hk, china dramas! And that's why i'm hooked onto dramas these days. So far i've watch It Started With A Kiss 2 (i know it's lame.. but once u've watched the 1st one, u wanna watch the 2nd just so u know the ending) and Last Friends (a very interesting and meaningful Jap drama). hehe...

Alas, my winter wonderland didn't last long. Just a few hours later, the snow became heavy rain! And it rained till the evening. What a lousy weather. And the sky turning dark at 3pm ain't helping. It just makes ppl wanna hibernate and not step out of the house at all!! Sheesh..

The rain after the snow...
Snow on the ground begins to melt.. and soon it'll turn into slush. =(

I want it to snow MORE!!!
I want to make snowman and snow angels!!!
I want to make snowballs and throw at Joe!
I want to take lots of pretty pics in the snow!!
So please let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!

The speechless reaction when i see snow video. haha...

The Way I Am

It's about 38 hours away from my LAST final exam in UBC now... Linguistics, urghh! I'm getting so blur and sick of it already! Can't wait for it to be over. haha.. For once, i finish earlier than the rest of my friends!! wahahaha..

Am very excited yet sad to know my time here is slowly coming to an end. Seems like there's still so many things to do around here. Many places i've yet to explore.. but right now, all this can't compare to the thought of finally going back to my homeland. Not that i'm looking fwd to starting stupid classes in USM (duh..), it's more of the joy of being in a familiar environment and eating REAL food for once.

But then again, when i think of packing up to go back, i just wish i could stay here for another sem! Even if that means i've to go through rainy winter times and eating lousy food for another 4 mths. I don't wanna go back to Malaysia where the sun shines 12 hours a day, where 5pm looks like 12pm, where i'm busy all day long, where i can't live without a phone for 1 sec, where internet sucks, where... sighs.. where everything i have here is not there basically. lol..

Anyways, i shouldn't be blogging rite now. So i'm going back to my books and ending this blog with a cute song i found..

The Way I Am
by Ingrid Michaelson
If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.

Cuz I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.

If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I'll make it better.

Cuz I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.

I'd buy you Rogaine when you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.

Cuz I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

*p.s.: This song goes out to you vincey! =D

Cookie No More!

Did you know that Cookie Monster, THE Cookie Monster is becoming a Veggie Monster??!! OMG!!! How can this be happening???

According to rumours, Sesame Street's Cookie Monster is going to cut back a little on his cookie consumption and eat more fruits and vegetables. Apparently it's to encourage healthier eating among children... He's even got a new anthem: "A Cookie is a SOMETIME Food." Seriously. Seriously?! -.-"

What is a COOKIE Monster without his cookies?!!

I cannot imagine my favourite lovable blue, furry, googly eye Muppet who understands, speaks and shares my most basic appetites and desires becoming a CARROT or CABBAGE Monster just because eating too much yummy comfort food is not healthy! This is absurd!!! Kids in future will never know the fun of seeing that cute blue voracious monster stealing cookies from everyone around him and then gobbling cookies like they're the most delicious food on earth! They'll only see him gobbling veggie! This is so sad... Come on lah, where's the fun in that?! I don't see the need for anyone to obsess, lust and crave for veggie to the point that they have to protect their veggie defensively or take someone else's veggie by force just because they love healthy veggie! Only cookies are worth doing that!! COOKIES!!! Plus, it's not like he's obese or even overweight! Though judging from his googly eyes, i think he has more of an eyesight problem than weight issues. And perhaps he needs some grammar lessons too. lol..

No matter what the idiots say, i still think Cookie Monster is the coolest. Unlike us humans, who need many things to make us happy, he only needs his cookies. So from now on, i shall try to be like my idol. I will try to keep my life desires to the very minimal -- cookies. Isn't that great? Just cookies and me! Me want cookie, me eat cookie! *Om nom nom nom* hehe =D Oh, and another great thing about my idol: he's one of those monsters who can eat whatever he wants and never gain a pound! hahaha... How i wish i was like him. =P

"C is for Cookie, and that's good enough for me!"

My favourite song: C is for Cookie!

C For Cookie
Must watch! FUNNY!! =D

What's Wrong?

AAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

What is wrong with me???!

I'm constantly glued to Surfthechannel.com (i rue the day Kevin introduced me to this fabulous site) watching almost EVERY latest US TV series like Gossip Girl (the drama), Prison Break (Michael Scofield!), Heroes (just so i know how they're changing the world), How I Met Your Mother (cos i love "Barney"), Grey's Anatomy (there's never enough surgery surprise n melodrama) plus Grey's Anatomy Season 2 (cos i missed it and it's bloody addictive. damn it!) instead of doing what i SHOULD be doing:

1. studying for linguistics quiz tmr - vowels & vowel-like articulation (wth?)

2. doing linguistic solo and group assignments due this n coming thursday

3. starting on my european history term paper

4. reading european history so i actually know WHAT to write for my term paper

5. did i mention read linguistics?

And yet, here i am blogging about wasted time. The irony. *pulls hair*

A Rainy Summer's Night

It's Remembrance Day today - a holiday in Canada to honor all war veterans who died on the battlefields. Had plans to go out to a Trift Store to look for 2nd hand luggage bag (cos the stuffs i'm bringing back to Malaysia are dangerously going to be double what i brought over. hahaha..) but my plans were dampened when i woke up to another rainy autumn's day. And so, like i said previously, i was spending what should have been a nice Tuesday holiday indoors all day studying for linguistics. Sighs.. As i was studying, looking at the rain falling outside my window brought back memories of a similiar rainy day...

It was the end of summer's day, when Joeyin and I decided we MUST get out of the house while summer's still here and the sun is still shining! After much consideration, we decided we shd make a trip to Gastown first, and later to Richmond's Summer Night Market cos it was the last day of the night market and we've heard so much about it, that we shouldn't miss this chance! So on a brilliant sunny sunday, we headed out with high hopes and an umbrella in our bags, just to be prepared for showers which has been pouring for the past week. haha.

First stop: Gastown
Another one of those tourist spot, Gastown was named after 'Gassy' Jack, and is famous for its steam clock that used to run on real steam but now only has steam spewing out every 15mins. haha.. Well, we're tourists in Vancouver after all, so no matter what ppl say about this place and the shops here being a tourist rip-off, we just had to have a picture with that clock! lol.. So, we took a bus to Downtown, but before venturing into Gastown, we wandered the surrounding area and came to Waterfront Station - a ferry terminal/train station just next to Gastown which houses the 1st Starbucks in Canada and has a beautiful view of the port outside. Took a few pics here and there, and headed back on our way to Gastown.

Canada Place

There were endless souvenir shops - we rushed into everyone we saw - but soon realised the things sold are about the same in every shop. Wish i could buy a little something for everyone, but with limited pocket money, shopping was kinda hard. Sighs.. Hmm.. think i'll be back here before i leave. hehe! Anyways, our main priority was to see the steam clock! Not shopping!! So, we headed straight to clock, trying not to be seduced by anymore souvenirs we saw. haha..

The Gastown Steam Clock

We were very tempted to go in, but.. sighs..

Gassy Jack

After many pictures, exploration and temptations, we decided we shd be on our way to Richmond for the night market. But before that, we'd have to fill our grumbling tummy. While searching for the correct bus stop around Downtown, we spotted a Korean restaurant offering reasonably priced meals! So, of cos we headed in for some hot food in the cold evening. But before eating, we detoured to our favourite supermarket Downtown: Marketplace!! Joeyin and I fell in love with it eversince the first time we came here by chance. It's not a very big store, but it has some surprising offers once a while and also the BEST n CHEAPEST bakery and the YUMMIEST potato salad. I'm serious. Every time we're here, we'll definitely buy their cheese bun, herb panini and of cos a box of potato salad. Delicious! =) Too bad there isn't buns like these near UBC, or i would be eating it every week! hehe.

Downtown: Richards n Smith St

View outside Marketplace.
We'd sit here, enjoying our food while watching the crowd go by.

Marketplace's buns.
The first time we bought it.

The yummiest potato salad! =D

The cheap Korean restaurant

I ordered a bibimbap and it was worth my money.
Portions were big enough and very satisfying. =D

Second stop: Richmond
After our hearty meal, just as we were feeling warm and full of energy, the sky turned grey and then rained as we waited for the bus. -.-" Arghh!! Damn... We were praying so hard it wouldn't rain, cos who goes to an open air night market in the rain?! Apparently, we were (ok, i alone was) desperate enough to stick to the plan and I dragged Joeyin there with me, giving her the excuse that it was the LAST night of the night market, thus we MUST be there that night!!! hahaha...

And soon, we were in Richmond. Richmond isn't a very nice place to be at night let me tell u this. It's more of an industrial area - there was no one on the streets, only cars and buses. After we got down, we had to switch to another bus, but we couldn't find the stop. Thankfully, there were a family who got down with us, and we managed to catch up with them to ask for directions, and thank god we did. Turns out we walked on the wrong side of the road and in the wrong direction. Sweats.. In the end, we found that little eeerie bus stop by a dark corner.

The eerie bus stop

And the seats covered in wet papers. Stress..

There was only one bus to the night market and it came only every 30 mins once! Shits. It seemed like forever waiting for that bus, we begin to suspect there was no bus at all. You know wats the stupid thing about Vancouver's weather? It was so sunny and warm in the morning, but suddenly in the evening it rains and when it rains, there's bloody chilly wind blowing from everywhere! Being ignorant and hopeful in the morning, we were so NOT dressed for a chilly night! We were basically freezing in our thin jackets while waiting for the idiotic bus to arrive. Finally, before our last thread of hope vanished, a lady came and told us she was going to the night market too! YAYS!! Apparently according to her, every year rain or shine there's bound to be thousand of ppl lining up to go to the night market. But this year there were only 3 of us.. till another first-timer ang moh old man came too. hahaha.. So there we were, 4 lonely ppl waiting in the rain for the bus to come.

You'll never know the joy of sitting in a heated bus till u have been frozen out in the wind. Joeyin and I were totally enjoying and warming ourselves in the bus. The stupid bus driver told us that special bus was going directly to the night market, so we were happily sitting there blowing hot air into our hands. Suddenly, the bus stopped in front of Ikea, and more ppl got up. Joe n I would still be warming our hands with hot breath if it weren't for the lady who asked us to get down! WHAT?! You call this a "direct bus" to the market? We were just in the middle of nowhere! Even the old ang moh didn't know we had arrived till i told him it was our stop. hahaha! Well, luckily we had the lady to guide the 3 of us first-timers to the market. It was basically winding through many factories and dark carpark till we see the market lights. And when we reached the market, what joy it was to see there were many crazy ppl like us who go to an open air market in the rain. hohoho!

The old man, the lady and Joe (warming her hands)

Richmond's Summer Night Market

Well, the market wasn't as grand as it was 'dihebohkan'. I think our very own Cheras night market beats it hands down anytime!! Malaysia Boleh man! wahaha.. These poor Vancouverites haven't seen what a REAL incredible night market looks like man. What a pity.. We were terribly disappointed but since we were there, we should just explore all the stalls. A few made-in-china clothing stalls, few more made-in-china electronic gadgets, and more chinese food stalls. Basically chinese stuffs everywhere. Didn't buy much (a $3 bag & a $1 file only), but we took a lot of FREE Vege juice. hahaha.

Within an hour, we were out of that place and after all the Vege juice i had to pee urgently. I was so desperate, i almost went into one of those blue toilet stalls u see in construction sites. U know what i mean? But the thought of me peeing in a dark stall in the market changed my bladder's mind. Thank god there was a McD nearby. McDs in Canada are kinda pathetic lah.. No one bothers to come here at all! Compared to M'sia, the one we went into had barely 5 ppl and it was only 10pm! Siens.. Anyways, we didn't want to miss the last bus, so in a hurry we walked to the bus stop and waited. Guess what's in front of the bus stop?

The shop for me!!

After a boring ourselves for awhile, the bus came. The bus was JUST about to leave the stop, when i noticed Joe's umbrella wasn't with her and i asked her. It was on the bus stop bench! She quickly rushed to stop the driver from driving off. The driver did stop, and she got back her umbrella. Whew~ That was real close! Now kids before i go on, let me tell u the story of that umbrella... (trust me the story's gonna get more exciting)

It was on 29 Aug 2008, when Joe n I first came to Vancouver and on the first day itself it rained. It was just two of us gals in a foreign land with only 1 umbrella (mine) wandering the streets of Downtown Vancouver on that rainy evening. Joe hadn't thought of bringing an umbrella all the way from M'sia and after few minutes out in the rain, she soon regretted it. So, we looked around for umbrellas, but everyone of them were expensive (practically everything we saw were ex to us then. haha). Therefore, being the cheapskates we were, Joe decided not to buy one yet. Fwd to 31 Aug 2008 in our UBC residence: we had just moved into our campus residence and it appeared that the ex-residents have left a whole box of unwanted stuff in the store. Curiousity led us to explore the store and open the big box to see what we could use. We found 1 big and 1 small slow cooker, 1 pack of glutinous rice, half a pack of dried mushrooms, lots of tupperware, 2 rice cookers, and buried down beneath it all.... were 2 identical umbrellas! It felt like an early Christmas. Joe was even more happier cos this means she didn't have to buy an umbrella le!

Ok, back to the story... We were on the bus, finally on our way home. Chatting happily bla bla bla till we reached that same eerie corner. Joe got off first, then me and then an old man boarded the bus. The moment the bus closed its doors and started to move, Joe suddenly shouted and ran after the bus!! I didn't know wat she was doing, but realised miliseconds later that she had once again left her umbrella! OMG!! It was on the bus!!! She managed to catch up with the bus and knock on the bus's side, the old man (the only passenger) saw her and rang the bell, BUT the STUPID IDIOTIC driver didn't stop!!!! He just drove on.... And just like that, Joe lost 'her' umbrella forever. We were wondering how Joe could have left her umbrella AGAIN!, how i could have missed it when i got down after her etc... Then out of the blue, we came up with a "brilliant" plan to wait for THE bus to return. We thought since it's so late at night, and the buses came every 30mins, there shd only be about 1 or 2 buses plying the route. And so we waited in the rain once again at the same bus stop for the bus to return. We waited.. and waited.. sang stupid songs to forget the cold.. walked and wandered about the eerie place to kill boredom.. and finally one of the bus came.. BUT it wasn't the same bus! And so we waited some more.... U know how time past so SLOOOOOOOWLY when u're waiting? Yeah.. it felt like centuries that night. Thinking back, i don't even know WHY ON EARTH we waited for more than one bloody hour in the cold for the umbrella. So many bus back to UBC have passed by till finally, the 2nd bus came. Joe went up the bus and asked the driver if she could check. BUT it wasn't the bus! She asked the driver how many buses were on the road that night... he said there were 5!!!!! Oh my god..

We couldn't take it any longer. Cold and tired, we gave up hope and just waited for our bus back. Joe had decided in the end she had to buy an umbrella after all. haha... When we finally reached home, i suddenly recalled that there was another umbrella in that box! Joe quickly went to find that umbrella, and she FOUND IT! There it was... the long forgotten umbrella!!! Gosh.. the DRAMA we had to go through, when we had an umbrella right there in our house! Crazy really. LOLs!

And so from that moment on, Joe n I vowed never to go to Richmond ever again. haha. Ok, that's exaggerating. We were just traumatised for life, with a BAD, VERY BAD memory of Richmond, and would rather die than to step foot there ever again. LOL..

And that, folks, is the story of a rainy summer's night.

=THE END=

Joe with her unlucky umbrella.
May the umbrella find a better owner. haha.

ps: I didn't know my post would be this long. Well, guess i won't have to blog for at least a week eh? hehehe..
