Dale D. Dayhoff, 88, Topeka, formerly of Chanute, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012 at a local hospital.
Dale was born Jan. 7, 1924 in Abilene, the son of Harry and Phoebe (Hoover) Dayhoff. He graduated from Salina High School and Kansas State University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was employed as a civil engineer for the Kansas Department of Transportation for 36 years, retiring in 1985. He worked for KDOT in Florence, Cottonwood Falls, Junction City and Chanute.
He enjoyed playing bridge, woodworking, golf, gardening, traveling, and watching K-State football.
He was a member of Countryside United Methodist Church in Topeka, V.F.W. Post #1654, American Legion Post #170, Kiwanis Club, and the First United Methodist Church all in Chanute, the Kansas Engineers Society, and KDOT retirees.
Dale married Esther Mae Woods on July 11, 1943, in Salina. She survives. Other survivors include daughters, Lynne (Alan) Caraway, Cypress, Calif., Terri (David) Sanchez, Topeka, Becky (Karl) Muenzenmayer, Annandale, Va.; grandchildren, Jason Linenberger, Dr. Nicole Caraway, DVM, Dana Caraway; four step-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; brother, Delbert (Janelle) Dayhoff, Bartlesville, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012, at Countryside United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will be at a later date at Leavenworth National Cemetery. Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
