Dots
Dots are minute little things that otherwise pass by unnoticed, amidst the hectic lives that we lead. As students with extraordinary mental capacity and astute observation skills attuned to grabbing even the most microscopic details of our everyday lives, this groundbreaking essay shall aim to uncover the various important dots of our planet. A famous man once said, “Good things come in small packages.” I agree, but only to a certain extent to this statement. Pimples – the most common dot of all, pass by unnoticed. They come in small packages (tiny pimples) but can come in large packages (many pimples). Pimples are the dots, commonly thought to be insignificant, which reflect the years of toil and hardship undergone by a person. Pimples can be squeezed; once squeezed, the bitterness of life oozes out and what is left behind is a much happier and satisfied human being. To further substantiate this point, I bring in another famous saying, “The more the merrier.” This saying has its roots in pimples; to break down this complicated saying – the more the pimples, the more bitterness you squeeze out, and the merrier your life will be. Also, did you ever realize that people with pimples are necessarily wiser? Even amongst those with pimples, those with MORE pimples have higher IQs. Of course, one might point out that Albert Einstein, probably the human being with the highest IQ ever, did not have pimples. However, pimples did not exist during his time! It is thus unfair to raise such non-relevant examples and we should instead look around us for examples that prove my point more accurately.
The next dot has its importance well-established in racial and religious historical contexts. Located on the foreheads of a race once discriminated, this particular dot now dominates the global scene and looks set to conquer the world. Since time immemorial, this dot has been in the headlines. Gandhi was responsible for the Great Salt March and the ultimate independence of India. Martin Luther King Jr. sacrificed himself for the sake of black rights not only in the United States, but worldwide too. Usain Bolt holds the Olympic and world records for 100m, 200m and 4x100m events. Barrack Obama sits in presidential office as the 44th president of the United States, coming down in history as the first black president of the most powerful country in the world. The country with the most of the number of red dots, India, is on the rise. It is predicted to become the next biggest economy within the next century after China. This dot currently hogs the limelight on news front-pages and will continue to do so for the rest of the 21st century, so mark my words.
On a more serious note, dots have become a major art movement; if one traces back a few decades, he would find that dots have been used extremely widely in Aboriginal Australia, to create dot paintings. Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papunya_Tula for more details. Although this topic may be a bit dry, it is also an important milestone in the rich and glorious history of dots. Moving on, I must bring out the point that many critics of technology think that computer games and the Internet are causing the dilution of arts and culture. However, this is definitely not the case. To bring out a specific example – do not think that dota players nowadays do not know how to appreciate the arts and culture – there is this dota fanatic from Louisiana, U.S., who blogs about dot paintings at this website: http://dotart.blogspot.com/. From his website URL, we can tell that though this guy may be a DOTA addict, he definitely thinks that art Rocks Too, therefore dota-rt, to the extent that he uploads and blogs about the paintings he creates using dots. From here, we can tell that the computer can coexist perfectly with the arts and can in fact influence the rise of art movements. For all we know, the next era for popular art will be known as...Doticism…
Finally, the last dot with undoubted importance is the full-stop. Full-stops mark a completeness and wholeness that cannot be replaced by any other punctuation. ?QUESTION MARKS? are complex to write, and besides, they demonstrate unsure-ness and a shaky attitude; !EXCLAMATION MARKS! are full of emotion and can be ambiguous since it can be written when the writer is in awe, surprise, anger or even delusion. This perhaps explains why all of us have an unnatural tendency to conclude sentences with full-stops rather than anything else. Furthermore, as a follow-up from the previous paragraph, full-stops are universal symbols of peace and neutrality. In the ancient times, people or countries at war with each other used to send white flags over to indicate truce. Since time immemorial, lovers who have quarreled make up by sending roses or some other pretty flower to each other; those at Bishan send delicious rafflesias to their spouses. In the present, people at loggerheads with each other send SMS-es to say their sorries. In the future, people will wrap and nicely package DOTS to send their sincerest apologies. Do not be surprised if you see “……” in MSN convos – it is just the opposite end’s way of saying “I’m sorry”.
After being revealed the true essentiality of dots, all of us should not treat dots so lightly anymore. I should end of with a quote as all great writer in history do: The futuristic Cruella de vil in 101 Dalmations very wisely predicted the importance of dots – “Dots, dots, I see dots!” – we should follow in her shoes and worship dots, perhaps even embrace them, so as to enrich our own lives in the coming future.

Reading of the week
Ah, the sweet smell of the weekend! Till I realise I have so many unmarked essays to complete. So without further ado, let's move on to the reading of the week... Shakespeare's Sonnet #18!
Shakespeare, arguably the most famous writer in the world in history, wrote not only plays, but sonnets too. A sonnet is a type of poetic forms, like a little song (from the Italian word sonetto). It now means a poem of 14 lines, also known as a Shakespearean sonnet, or an English sonnet. Each line has ten syllables, written in an iambic pentameter.
Sonnet 18 is perhaps Shakespeare's most famous sonnet, and there has been a debate over who the author addresses the sonnet to (and in this case, many critics believe it's to a male). A classic example of how to win someone over with words, as Shakespeare recounts of how his beloved is better than a summer's day, and shall live on forever through the words of a poem.
Sonnet 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And Summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd: But thy eternal Summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest; Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
- William Shakespeare

Reading of the week
Class, since some of you have such adverse reactions to poetry, I thought I might do this weekly thing on literature, a selection of some readings that I think might interest you, or has somehow touched my life one way or another.
So for this week's selection, a poem by the Irish poet William Butler Yeats, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923. I stumbled on this poem shortly graduating from Hwa Chong, and then, I thought it was one of the most poignant poems I have come across, filled with such rich imagery but light, tender and simple.
Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven
Had I the heaven's embroidered cloths, Enwrought with golden and silver light, The blue and the dim and the dark cloths Of night and light and the half light, I would spread the cloths under your feet: But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.
*Enwrought (adj.) - wrought or worked in, as a decorative pattern (archaic)

Of what we do for GP
Just a note about GP, especially when you might be asking:
Why is Mr Lo teaching us this? Why are we doing this in class?
GP is essentially an arts subject. What this means is that what you have and will study in class (and on your own) do not have a 100% chance that it will be tested in your A levels exams. However, along the way, you will pick up skills, through extensive reading, writing and discussion. In addition, the skills you have picked up for GP will serve you well in your future endeavours, especially so when applying for scholarships and the numerous interviews you have to attend; your term and thesis papers in university, and future jobs that you will take on.
So you might ask, how much of what we learn now will appear in our A level exams?
Honestly speaking, 10% or less.
But think of the bountiful amount of skills you will pick up, the knowledge and appreciation you have for English and all its comeliness.
So think twice when asking Why is Mr Lo teaching us this? Why are we doing this in class? because I will just wring your neck off if you do that!

RE: vent your frustrations
Giving and Receiving: How Can One Be Better Than the Other?A discussion began on my network forum in which a member posted the very widely accepted belief that "it is better to give than to receive". Certainly something we think about this time of year when giving goes full throttle - either from a spiritual standpoint or a commercial one. I thought I would share my thoughts on this timely topic… Giving and Receiving...yes, a topic relating to our core values. Note the capital "G" and the capital "R" I used above. I have given importance to both. Let's look at a dictionary definition of "better": better (adjective) 1: greater than half; 2: improved in health or mental attitude; 3: more attractive, favorable, or commendable; 4: more advantageous or effective; 5: improved in accuracy or performance For our purposes here, I suppose "better to give than receive" probably refers to numbers 3 and 4: favorable, commendable or more advantageous or effective. Now let me give you questions to ponder: ~ Is it better to exhale than to inhale? ~ Is it better to be awake or to sleep? ~ Is it better to talk or to listen? ~ Is it better to speak to God/Universe/Creator (affirm/pray) or to listen to God/Universe/Creator (meditate)? Which of the above are more favorable, commendable, advantageous or effective? Think about this for a moment or two, before reading on. Here is a quote that I placed below the title of Tithing Sets You Free, Lesson Five of the Feel Free to Prosper program: The Law of Giving The universe operates through dynamic exchange… giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe. And in our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives. ~ Deepok Chopra So, if giving and receiving are both aspects of the flow of energy in the Universe, then how can one be "better" than the other? How can one exist without the other? How can we exhale if we don't inhale, and vice versa? I am not a bible scholar and I don't want to bring religious discussion into this, as spiritual law encompasses all religions and no religion. However, the bible is filled with spiritual law and I am familiar with and quote certain scriptures that pertain to the teachings of these laws. The biblical scripture does not say, "It is better to give..." The scripture states, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." blessed (adjective): bringing pleasure, contentment or good fortune In teaching about tithing, for example, I teach that one gives in order to set the flow of prosperity energy into motion. It is establishing our connection to Universal supply. It is the farmer planting his best seed to create a harvest. It is releasing (giving up) fear in order to create the space in our consciousness to receive. ~ The Universe/God is ready and willing to give us our supply. But if we cannot receive, then where is the blessing? ~ The seeds contain the gift within themselves, but if the soil is depleted and cannot receive, where is the blessing? ~ If our good wants to get through to us, to reach us, but fear is occupying our thoughts and emotions so that here is no room for it, then where is the blessing? ~ If we give to someone, but they do not feel deserving to receive, or are ungrateful, embarrassed or feel obligated, then where is the blessing? So yes, giving IS a blessing and allows us to become individualized expressions of the Creator itself, however, we must come to a very definite realization that receiving is a very important part of giving. With no receiving, there is no giving. When there is a gracious receiver, then the giver AND the receiver are blessed. Pleasure, contentment and good fortune are bestowed on both. And a very good way to learn how to be a gracious receiver and open ourselves up to Universal supply is to learn to give to ourselves. © Copyright 2004-2007 Marilyn Jenett http://ezinearticles.com/?Giving-and-Receiving:-How-Can-One-Be-Better-Than-the-Other?&id=375633

1ST GP ESSAY!
QUESTION: Males are more disadvantaged when compared to females. Do you agree with this statement? I agree with this statement to a certain extent. First, let me define a few terms in this question. “Males” refer to muscular dudes who are male in gender, while “females” refer to those people who wear skirts and strut around like models expecting the muscular dudes to give way to them. When it comes to issues of physical harm, taboo terminology, and festivals, males are definitely more disadvantaged than females. When it comes to issues of physical strength and the human anatomy, males finally show what stuff they are made of. Perhaps the most frustrating thing for males is that of physical “abuse” or harm. While it is normal for females to physically harm (lightly) males but it is considered ghastly and abusive even if males 动一根寒毛 of females. For example, when PCJS punches or whacks innocent males like Strychnine, though Strychnine’s muscular arm can take the blow, and PCJS often dares Strychnine back to punch her, it is immediately thought of as ‘just not right’. After all, how can males hit females? Of course, when PCJS hits T-Ball Pang, this question does not arise as there is always a reflex blow if one punches T-Ball Pang. To add on, taboo terminology plays a part in making males more disadvantaged when compared to females. Males are often referred to as “gentlemen”; with this term comes many heavy responsibilities such as “gentle”, “kind”, “warm”, and, most annoyingly, “politeness to the females”. Females are often referred to as “ladies” but even if they do not behave as prim and proper ladies should, they are not criticized or thought of badly. However, if gentlemen behave badly, the terminology will not be conferred on them anymore and they will be degraded to being “male” commoners again. Also, “gentlemen” have to always give way to “ladies”, yet there are no societal provisions that “ladies” have to make way for “gentlemen”. Why is this so? The sheer unfairness of the world…sigh… Besides, the celebration of festivals makes it clear that males are disadvantaged compared to females. Recently, we just celebrated International Women’s Day. Where is International MEN’S Day? Huh? Out of sight? We don’t need it? Yah right! In households, subservient husbands are often dominated by their aggressive and authoritative wives. In school and at the workplace, female students employees abuse their la femme power against powerless males who are coerced into being “gentlemen”. In every place that males go, females go FIRST. Where has the justice in this world gone to? Is all the above not justification enough for festivals to celebrate the existence of males? However, males can sometimes be more advantaged than females. It is generally known that males are physically stronger and fitter than the weaker and less-fit females. For every single sport available in the world, the men’s world-record timings pawn/own/thrash/trash the females’ world-record timings. Why is this so? It is because males have much greater physical strength, and not to mention stamina for a few of our Jamaican counterparts, as compared to the females. Females only know how to mug, while males balance both mugging and the athletics. Even so, males manage to do well and score ten A1s and also run faster than Strychnine but, of course, height has to be sacrificed. Despite this, what is a little disadvantage compared to all the advantages already gained over the lesser females? Also, in terms of the human anatomy, males are one notch above females. When we think about it, people like AZK and 我的人 have such well-defined chests and arms that we feel dwarfed when we stand next to them. Their huge, muscular shadows loom over us as they completely overpower and dominate us. This goes to say for other prominent bodybuilders like Strychnine and all other males who read this zai blog. For females, though they have some good stuff also, males do have a generally more well-framed anatomy and this cannot be doubted at all. In conclusion, it should be said that males are more disadvantaged than females. Truly, females play a less important role in life than males – housewives versus breadwinners. Though in many scenarios and under many conditions males are abused by abusive females (duh), males remain loyal to their tradition and stick to being “gentlemen”. To all females out there: the next time you decide to bully a male, think twice; it’s not that males are defenceless, we are just too gentlemanly to 计较 with you childish and immature people. Thus, I conclude that males are more disadvantaged but, YOU KNOW WHAT? they are definitely more muscular and matured than those peoples known as females.

The Thing About Readings
When it comes to GP lessons, we get no less than 10 readings "over the weekends" When it comes to March hols, we get no less than 1,000 readings "over the hols" ...if you think this is crazy, consider again, because... "WE'RE STILL LAGGING BEHIND" and "IF YOU DON'T DO WELL IN GP IT'S 'COS YOU DIDN'T READ ENUFF READINGS" Other classes must have like mountains of readings, huh? They're faster than us?!?! We're not GP robots, and there's definitely much more to life than reading readings. Surprisingly, Mr Darth Vader apparently thinks that his readings are effective. However, readings are not for reading. (What an irony!) Readings are for pple like CKR to wipe bottoms after an intense session of bubblebreaker P.S. after saying that, please still read your readings cos you might do badly for GP if you don't =)

TECHNOLOGY
All who did technology flame this question here under Comments... (10) "Technology is a necessary evil." Do you agree?First of all, technology is not an evil by itself! It is in fact how scientists and other governmental officials choose to employ technology to their own advantage that really causes technology to be seen as "evil" due to its morally and ethically-objectionable usages. Secondly, why would an evil be necessary? Though you might think that some things require a balance of both sides (good and bad), this might not be the case for technology. Take for example gene technology used to create designer babies is actually useless. Since there is already in-vitro, why is there a need to personally design your perfect baby? Thirdly, and lastly, this question purposely tries to perplex even seasoned GP essay writers like those pros from 09S72. "Technology is a necessary evil" actually translates into "Are there more advantages or disadvantages of technology?" Why do the question setters have to phrase it so cunningly such that a question that is originally so simple becomes so frustrating to think about? I love GP =D
