1983 The Boyfriend Programme Part A

After the efforts of 1979 (Desperate Desmond), 1980 (Joseph) and 1981 (Dracula), 1982 saw the production team having a rest.  But in 1983 they were all back at it again, and this time the selected musical was The Boyfriend.  The show was produced over four nights, Wednesday 27 May, Thursday 28 May, Friday 29 May and Saturday 30 May.  You can see a number of chorus members from the earlier productions, now often in lead roles in this show.  Here's the programme, and thanks again to Rachel Quirk for sending this one up.

Lyrics:

Song: The Dracula Spectacula Show

Look! Read! Gasp! Quiver!
He's waiting for you there
Girl Meets Ghoul! Shiver!
In his castle lair.

So if you feel cosy
With Bela Lugosi
This is the show for you
There are no tomorrows
In this chamber of horrors
Check your heartrate - do.

Who is it drinks from the coffin's cup?
What goes down but must come up?
The Prince of Vampires, the King of Night
It's the Dracula Spectacula
The Dracula Spectacula
Dracula Spectacula Show

Bats! Screech! Blood! Rites!
You'll need the exorcise.
White! Fangs! Eyes! Ice!
Do not trust that smile.

So if your cup of tea
Could be Christopher Lee
Then fly with us tonight!
'Cos it's a two-way trip
In a cataleptic fit
Watch out in case he bites!

Who is it drinks from the coffin's cup?
What goes down but must come up?
The Prince of Vampires, the King of Night
It's the Dracula Spectacula

Come fly over Yugoslavia
Fly, fly. fly.

Time and the world are ever in flight
So the poet says
Come fly with us to the highest height
Wrapped in clouds and snow
Just smile on those below

Come fly, Transylvania

Come fly over Transylvania
Fly, fly, fly.
Come fly...

Video: Be Silent and Attentive to Me (1981)

Here's the videoclip for the song Be Silent and Attentive to Me sung by Lisa Cook (nee Crawley) from Dracula Spectacula.  Who could ever forget Mistress Landau's coach trip from the airport to Dracula's castle?

Remember: the videos probably look better in full-screen mode, click the [ ]-looking icon in the bottom right corner

Lyrics:

Song; Be Silent and Attentive To Me

Be silent and attentive to me
Hold fast as we pass the gallow tree
A dreadful creature devastates this land
Possesing woman and devouring man.

So we must ride, ride, ride
With never a backward glance
Keep low and hide, hide, hide
The inn is our only chance.

If the moon shines fair and bright
He will spy us from his castle height
When blood lust vampire dominates the air
Then 'fair is foul' and truly 'foul is fair'

So we must ride, ride, ride
With never a backward glance
Keep low and hide, hide, hide
The inn is our only chance.

If the moon shines fair and bright
He will spy us from his castle height
When blood lust vampire dominates the air
The 'fair is foul' and truly 'foul is fair'

So we must ride, ride, ride
With never a backward glance
Keep low and hide, hide, hide
The inn is our only chance.

Video: The Lubbly Glublick Song (1981)

Who could ever go past a German Drinking Waltz in a high school musical? Well there's certainly one in Dracula Spectacula, and this is it - the Lubbly Glublick Song!

Remember: the videos probably look better in full-screen mode, click the [ ]-looking icon in the bottom right corner

Lyrics:

Song: The Lubbly Glublick Song

Hans:
If you're a poor man who's full of regret
From family matters and problems of debt
If you've done all you can, but would like to do more
Then drink up your Glublick and freedom's restored

All:
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Fill up your glass to the brim
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Till it overflows the rim
All your troubles will stop
You'll find peace in each drop
When Glublick goes fizz ping and pop!

Gretel:
If you're a housewife who has given her all
To wiener schnitzel and pumpernick balls
If you've done all you can and the meal has no spice
Then pop in some glublick and everyzink's nice

All:
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Fill up your glass to the brim
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Till it overflows the rim
All your troubles will stop
You'll find peace in each drop
When Glublick goes fizz ping and pop!

Idiots:
If you're a Looby, a Clod or Riff-raff
You'll like drinking glublick with Scrubb and with Scratch
If you've drunk all you can and there's Dreg's in your Boots
Then pass on the glublick to Bogie and Booze.

All:
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Fill up your glass to the brim
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Till it overflows the rim
All your troubles will stop
You'll find peace in each drop
When Glublick goes fizz ping and pop!

Pupils:
If you're a schoolchild who finds learning too tough
And equations confuse you, then never give up
If you've done all you can, still the figures perplex
Just dip them in glublick and answer is 'X'

All:
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Fill up your glass to the brim
Drink Lubbly Glublick
Till it overflows the rim
All your troubles will stop
You'll find peace in each drop
When Glublick goes fizz ping and pop!

Video: Rhesus Negative Rock (1981)

Here we go, a sneak-peak of what's coming.  The videotape from the Dracula Spectacula has finally surfaced, and I have digitised a copy.  Be aware the tape was 31 years old, and toward the end of the show it was very badly damaged from too much pausing and playing, but this will really warm the cockles of your hearts.  Not bad at all.  This little clip is going to be like a Pringle - you can't stop at one.

Lyrics:

Song: Rhesus Negative Rock

Welcome to my Vampire Empire
High up on this misty hill
Meet the intravenous genius
Ever second's a vermilion thrill

Oh, Draculame'
He can charm me
He can turn me on and off
You can keep your muscles
We prefer corpuscles
When we dance the Rhesus Negative Rock!

Welcome to my Vampire Empire
High up on this misty hill
I supply re-vivication
Simply swallow down this cochineal pill!

Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
When we dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

Oh, Draculame'
He made us barmy
He just drove us quite insane
Changed our composition
With that small incision
Now we dance the Rhesus Negative Rock!   -  again!  (key change)

Welcome to my Vampire Empire
High up in this castle shell
It's a lunatic lymphatic
Every brainstorm's like a bat out of hell!

Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
When we dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

Oh, Draculame'
You don't harm me
You launch me to eternity
'Cos when we're hobnobbin'
With haemoglobin
We can dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
I mean MMMM! Yeah!!!!
Dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

(spoken) Miss Nadia: Oh, I hope we're not interrupting anything?

Welcome to my Vampire Empire
High up in this castle shell
It's a lunatic lymphatic
Every brainstorm's like a bat out of hell!

Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
When we dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

Oh, Draculame'
You don't harm me
You launch me to eternity
'Cos when we're hobnobbin'
With haemoglobin
We can dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
Rhesus-Negative-a-Negative Rock
I mean Mmm! Yeah!!!!
Dance the Rhesus-Negative Rock!

1981 An Evening of Theatre

For the princely sum of $1.50 (or 50c for a concession) Year 9 & 10 invited all along to our Evening of Theatre with Hisss The Villain and a Variety Show on Monday 30 November, 1981.  This was a compilation of musical and dramatic productions followed up with the famous A R Taylor melodrama.

I actually played drums for an early number (Christmas Jazz) which I didn't remember until Rachel Quirk sent me the programme.  (I probably had one rehearsal and a sight-read as I was wont to do in those days).  So for all the others who'd forgotten this, here is the programme (thanks Rachel).

This is a useful document as it not only lists those with a theatrical bent who were not in (or at least heavily in) Dracula Spectacula (including staff, such as Mr Hagen Heinrich, Mrs Magazinovic and Mrs Sandrea Petith) but also lists the Gorokan High School Choir as of  the end of 1981.

1981 Dracula Spectacula (Part A)

Wednesday 7th October, 1981at 8pm: Dracula Spectacula opens to incredibly appreciative crowds and was to run another three nights (Thurs 8th, Fri 9th and Sat 10th).  This was Gorokan's second MAJOR musical production and involved quite a large proportion of the school - both students along with staff.

Dracula is particularly memorable for the Gorokan High community, as the role of Dracula himself was played by none other than Robert Hackl.  For those unaware, Robert was tragically killed as a pedestrian on Scenic Road at San Remo only a few years after his dramatic and vocal triumph.

We have quite a lot of material on Dracula (thanks to Rachel Quirk for supplying me about half of this) so we'll split it up over about half a dozen blog entries.

1981 Dracula Spectacula (Part B)

Here are the publicity items printed in the lead-up and over the production week in the Tuggerah Lakes Advocate.  We were helped in some way as our English Mistress (Ms Marcia Kelly) this year married the editor of said paper and became Mrs Marcia Fenwick.  You'll notice a review by her as the final article on this blog post.
