Today I've been thinking about being retired because it's so darned cold out there. It's a beautiful sunny day but it's only 8°! I'm here snug and cozy, not having to go out unless I want to. The poor birds look all fluffed up and are eating like crazy just trying to keep their bodies fueled up good and staying warm. One good thing about these frigid temps is that it usually doesn't snow when it's so cold!
The authorities is such matters, seem to think we're going to have an early spring because THE groundhog, P. Diddy Phil, didn't see his shadow on G'hogs Day. Although I don't have much faith in this sort of predicting, I sure hope they're right. It's not that I don't think animals know, it's just questionable to me whether they tell us humans or not!
I've been looking at rose catalogs and not buying! It's a miracle. Usually by this time of the year, I've spent hundreds of dollars on catalog roses. One reason for not making catalog purchases is that I think if I get roses this year, it will be locally so I can help support our economy, instead of the economy of a remote place. Another reason is that I am going to replace some of my missing roses, the ones that succumbed to rose rosette disease or other things, with more user-friendly flowers and plants...the kind that more disease resistant and way less work. It will be plants like perennial hostas, iris, hydrangeas, lilies, daylilies, and lots of annuals in pots. That's not to say I won't get any roses, I know I will but I think we should all support our local economies...after all, that's where our loyalties should lie. I can usually find roses I want here in our local nurseries and stores.
The bird feeders are full, our supper is planned...baked chicken, roasted broccoli, roasted corn and acorn squash...all things I'll do in the oven. There's method to my madness.
I'm going to go snuggle up with a new book called, "The Audubon Backyard Birdwatcher" by Robert Burton and Stephen W. Kress. Its a nice fat, hefty, reference-type, hard-bound book (I don't always use my Kindle).
I love fat, hefty, reference-type, hard-bound books!
