The current state of diversity in the typical Australian workplace, and five advantages to be gained from embracing diversity in the workplace.

What is workplace diversity?

Workplace diversity means respecting and valuing the skills and differences that each staff member brings into the workspace. A diverse workplace is an inclusive environment that provides equal rights and opportunities for all workers, regardless of gender, colour, age, ethnicity, physical ability, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, and so on.

In Australia, it is law for workplaces to provide equal opportunity to their employees, as well as to create a workplace free from discrimination and harassment. Employers are responsible for putting measures into place to overcome employment disadvantage and discrimination in the workplace. This includes valuing workplace diversity and ensuring that a workplace is free from racial and sexual harassment, discrimination, and bullying.

Types of workplace diversity

It’s important to recognise the types of diversity and to provide ways to ensure that you as a workplace, employer, or employee are contributing toward a more diverse and inclusive workplace. Employing staff with barriers to employment and treating them fairly is one of the ways employers can attract a more diverse workplace and diversify the skill sets within a workplace.

There are now funding and incentive schemes in place to encourage businesses to support people with a disability, Indigenous Australians, mature-aged people, and those who have been in long-term unemployment. Here are some tips to help create a more diverse workplace:

  • Discuss diversity with your employees and outline the benefits of a diverse workplace.
  • Identify and address any bias when it comes to the recruitment process. Have hiring managers be aware of the qualities and benefits applicants of varying backgrounds can bring to the company and ensure they are allowing for a fair hiring process. Let applicants know that you are an equal-rights employer.
  • Value the individual skills that employees bring and make sure to utilize these strengths to help broaden your market and grow your company.
  • Allow for flexible work options and provide the opportunity for parental leave for both women and men.
  • Create and implement your own Workplace Diversity Plan (see the ACMA Diversity Plan as an example) for employees to become familiar with practising diversity and inclusiveness within the workplace.

Benefits of workplace diversity

  1. Increased productivity: A diverse workplace allows for more ideas and processes. This diversity of talent means a broader range of skills among employees, as well as a diversity of experiences and perspectives which increases the potential for increased productivity.
  2. Increased creativity: As various cultures and backgrounds work together, the opportunity for increased creativity exists. This is because there are more people with differing perspectives and solutions to problems, allowing for a greater chance of a workable solution to a workplace problem.
  3. Improved cultural awareness: A diverse range of cultures within the workplace allows companies to deal with the different nuances within a global marketplace. If a company does business with China, for example, having an employee who can speak Mandarin is an asset and can lead to improved workplace relations.
  4. A positive reputation: Companies that have a diverse workplace are often perceived as better employers. Potential employees want an employer who accepts and is tolerant of all backgrounds and who treats their employees fairly.
  5. Increase in marketing opportunities: If potential employees or customers see that a company represents a diverse workplace, it makes them feel like they can relate to the company more. Using advertising that depicts mature-aged, differently-abled, or ethnically diverse people encourages applicants to apply, promotes a positive reputation, increases marketplace awareness, and generates a more diverse client-base.

MELD: A PERFECT MEAL EVERY TIME

Meld upgrades your existing cookware and stove with automatic temperature control so every meal is perfect.

On my personal review. This made sense for people who are unsure of their temperature when cooking a soup meal. The Meld Knob is an automated knob for your existing cooktop, and it wirelessly communicates with a precision temprature sensor that attaches to your cookware. The Meld Clip monitors the temperature of you're cooking, and along with the iPhone and Android app, makes automatic adjustments to your gas or electric cooktop to ensure a perfect dish. Think of it as upgrading the cookware and range you already own helping you cook perfect meals, just like a professional chef, without the cost or years of training.

The Difference between Agile & Waterfall

The Difference between Agile & Waterfall

Both Agile and Waterfall are two of the most prominent software development methodologies used for ERP projects to deliver high value products in the least time possible. However, despite a common goal, they use different approaches to get the projects done. While Agile follows an incremental approach to get things done, Waterfall uses a sequential design process.

Both are viable methods used in project management but in different ways. Waterfall uses a traditional approach which can be rigid at times and where the whole development process is divided into a series of events starting from conception and all the way through to production. Agile, on the other hand, is newer than Waterfall and uses an incremental approach to lean development.

Waterfall is more like plan-driven which see analysis, design, coding, implementation, and testing as different phases of a software development project. It works well when scope of the project is known beforehand, but it limits changes thereby restricting adaptability. Agile, as a modern approach, is open to changes comes at a price of course, but it works well when scope of the project is unknown.

Agile begins with a simple project design, starting with small modules over a set period of time. The phases of development process run parallel with regular feedbacks and a backlog is maintained to keep tabs on the progress. On the contrary, Waterfall is a sequential process which doesn’t oversee the progress of the project. A developer can only jump to the next step after successfully completing the first step because it follows a sequential approach

Contract terms in Agile methodology allows partial success of the project thereby decreasing risk of failure. As a modern approach, it prioritizes process based on value which requires valuable features to be implemented first thereby reducing the risk of unusable product. Waterfall, on the other hand, is all about the “all or nothing” approach which increases the risk of failure because it limits the partial success of project.

Agile
  • Takes an interactive approach that is derived from lean thinking and it allows changing the scope of the project and it allows changing the scope of the project
  • It works well when the scope of the project is unknown
  • it allows changes to be made as it starts with a simple design which decided into small modules
  • customer availability is important through the entire project
  • it allows partial success as valuable features are implemented first thereby decreasing risk of failure
  • Products are tested throughly for bugs and errors during the development cycle.
  • It provides flexibility to oversee the development project

Waterfall
-->
  • it takes a sequential approach to software development where a project is divided into different phases
  • it works well when the scope of the project is known beforehand
  • the contract terms won't allow changes to be made as the process is sequential
  • customer availability is required only at set milestones
  • it doesn't allow partial success which increases the risk of failure
  • testing cannot be done during the development cycle, but only at the end
  • flexibility is limited as products are based upon documented requirements

Both Agile and Waterfall are the two most popular software development methodologies used in ERP projects, but they follow different approaches to serve a common goal; that is to deliver the required product in the least time possible free of bugs and errors. Agile follows a more incremental approach to software development which provides the flexibility to oversee the progress throughout the development cycle. Waterfall, on the other hand, does everything sequentially starting from conception and initiation to implementation and maintenance. Developers can only proceed to the next phase after successfully completing the first phase which restricts changes thereby increasing the risk of failure. Agile allows changes to be made during the development cycle which decreases the risk of complete failure.

Workplace Stress

NSW Workplace Stress

A workplace stress can give a huge impacts on health and safety.

Workers who experience stress when their work has reached beyond their capabilities. This normally happen when meeting their deadlines or a certain works not receiving enough support from colleagues or higher managements. This impacts the health and safety experience such as physical, mental and emotional reactions to their working environment and it give a negative impacts on personal well being.

Some worker, not all can’t cope with work changes due to their work demands and therefore they will have negative personal experiences. Although stress is not an physical injury but a long on going stress can lead to mental health such as depression. A work-related stress does not harm physical body but due to stress, they may harm their own personal body or taking drugs just to calm themselves. When a worker have this symptoms, it will not only give impact on themselves but other people and business as well. This obligation is the same for contractors or self employed.

To identify the possible work related stress are physical stress such as headaches, indigestion, tiredness, slow reactions and shortness of breath. Mental stress such as difficulty in decision making and mind forgetfulness. Emotional stress are irritability, excessive worrying, feeling of worthlessness, anxiety, defensiveness, anger and mood swing. Behavioural stress such as diminished performance, withdrawal behaviours, impulsive or risky behaviour and increase in alcohol, drugs and nicotine consumption. Long term health issues are cardiovascular disease, immune deficiency disorder, gastrointestinal disorders, psychiatric and phycological illness such as depression, anxiety, suicide thoughts and musculoskeletal disorders

The best way for managing work related stress in the workplace is to reduce and prevent stress before it gets worse and that would lead to risk health and safety. So a management program must be developed such as consultation with workers, the program needs to identify the areas within the workplace that are likely to cause stress.
