Ten Lessons

Recently, at a kindergarten interview, Cade was asked why he was there. His answered surprised me a bit. Instead of saying "to get into kindergarten", which is what I anticipated he would say, he said,"he was there to be able to learn."  Since that interview, Cade got into kindergarten! The school said he was impressive.  Of course, I always think he is impressive, but it is nice when all your hard work is commended.  So, with the note of learning, Chad and I learned a couple lessons this past month.

Lesson 1: Monkey see, Monkey do.
Okay, so it isn't a new lesson, but when Cade wants to do something Beckett always has to do the same. This is excellent with our new ventures in potty training.  It also works well for behavior modification.  But, when Cade had to dress up for a kindergarten interview, Beckett had to do the same.  When we arrived at the school, the interviewer complimented us  for being in church like attire.  I think they look handsome, even if Cade is growing so much, he has almost outgrown all of his nice clothes!

Lesson 2: If you have an inkling, then research it, because it just might be true.
Since Beckett was little, he has struggled with ear infection after ear infection. Herein lied my first inkling that something should be done. Last September, I finally realized that I didn't need a doctor's order to take him to the ENT. I took him to the ENT to reassure myself that he had no permanent ear damage.  Thankfully, he doesn't.  But, visit after visit, they would tell me, "his ears aren't infected, they just have water in them."(inkling number 2).There is no way that water in a child's ear is ever comfortable.  After a long delay, Beckett finally got tubes.  To say we were thrilled, is an understatement.  It was even worth the two almost skin breaking bites he gave me prior to placing him on the operating table! The poor child, even in two weeks time, is speaking much better than ever.

Lesson 3: Things are found much better when put in neat baskets!
Okay, so I have always been a clean freak, and somewhat organized.  Although, my recent obsession has been organizing my house to a tee.  Last month, I did a Target run and bought a few dozen baskets.  With these baskets, I have organized my linen closet, my pantry, the boys' room, and my clothes closet.  I have even labeled all the bins with chalkboard sticker paper. I must admit that Chad is super handy.  So, instead of spending $1000+ on a professional closet organizer. His sweat and tears (okay so maybe no tears were truly involved), worked magic in our master bedroom closet.

Lesson 4: Just because you have time to do something, doesn't mean you should do it.
We got bunk beds for the boys. It is the highlight of their world.  To us, it is a little like running fingernails down a chalkboard.  The threats, punishments, and tears that are distributed each night are mind blowing, along with the early morning wakings and no-nap takings.  But, it does make it all the worth while, when I can roll over in bed for 30 more minutes in the morning, because the boys are playing sweetly with their toys in their shared bedroom.  That, is priceless.
To complete the makeover in their room, all we needed was a little paint.  One afternoon, I got ambitious, took the boys to the paint shop, and proceeded to paint one of their walls with chalkboard paint.  Halfway through I was done, mainly because I couldn't reach the top.  So, for at least a week, it looked like someone splattered black paint all over their wall.  Thank goodness, Chad also knows how to paint, and again came to my rescue. Maybe that is the real lesson...don't start projects if you can't finish them!

Lesson 5: Lunch time play dates are little gifts to tired moms!
As mentioned before, Cade has recently been invited to friend's houses after school.  This. Is. Awesome. It truly is a gift when he is invited, or has a friend over for a couple hours to play.  It gives me time to get things done, and gives Cade an opportunity outside of school to connect with his friends. And, he is SO HAPPY!

Lesson 6: Sometimes the harder thing, produces greater results.
This year is my first year in the MOPS program, and the first year on the leadership team.  Initially, I joined to meet more people from my massively large church.  The first semester proved to be new, challenging, and a growing experience.  Many a night, I was tired and thought it might just be easier to stay home.  Thankfully, I pressed through.  As I have gotten more comfortable in my role, I have gained so many priceless blessings.  To learn and grow with other women, is truly a gift. I am thankful that I have given the time to connect with some amazingly strong, vibrant women!

Lesson 7: Some places never change.
We celebrated Chad's birthday at the beginning of February, and my sister's birthday in the middle of the  month.  We were able to celebrate Chad turning 34 with some donuts, breakfast, and coffee with my dad in the village near their house.
To celebrate my sister's last year before heading into her 30s, we went to Clyde's, a long standing staple in my family with tons of good eats.  Later in the day on the day of celebration,  as I was organizing my closet, I came across an old journal.  In that journal, dated February 15, 1997 (my sister's birthday), I had written about how we celebrated Melissa's birthday with lunch at Clydes! It was an amazing how 15 years, three extra guys, and six grandkids later, we would be celebrating her amazing life in same exact place! I guess some places are still special after all these years.

Lesson 8: Sundays are better spent with friends.
This past year, one of my dearest friends, started homeschooling her first grade daughter.  I am super impressed with her ability to accomplish all she does throughout her day.  We don't see them as much anymore, since they don't live right around the corner. But, since they still attend our church, we are guaranteed to see them weekly.  So, to make our Sundays even better, this month,we finally got the schedules together and spent an  afternoon eating, talking, and playing.

Lesson 9: The simplest ideas are sometimes the best ideas.
I am a huge fan of Pinterest for any crafty and/or food idea.  Since, Cade doesn't have school on Mondays, I am always looking for ways to teach him at home.  This past Monday, a Pinterest idea, using scrap paper and sight words, was a huge hit.  Matchbox cars never get old in this house!
Lesson 10: Practice makes perfect!
Cade is in his second session of swim lessons.  He goes weekly, and has now been moved up to the Advanced Beginner level(also known as AB1) because of his quick improvement in the sport.  Since he LOVES star wars, we like to say he is our OBwan, a play off of AB1,  now because of his concentration to the sport. He loves to swim, and loves his patient coaches even more!  This is the view we have weekly...along with our zealous cheering section, which sometimes includes my parents!  What a treat to have them be close to come see him in his element.

A Year Of Change

A New Year always equal a New Me. Last Year I prayed some hard, hard prayers. Prayers that I thought God might answer differently.  Prayers that took me to deeper surrendering for God's will in my life.  I guess the saying,"be careful what you pray for" rings true in my case.  The surrendering is the hard part, the blessings that flow are easy.  The blessings remind me of the awesome power God has in my family and I's life.
What in the world did I pray for?  Through my BSF study in Isaiah last year, God challenged my thinking, thus, challenging what I prayed for. As I write this, I vividly remember surrendering my heart and what I thought were my true talents of mine, over to Him. This meant, in my book, running marathon after marathon like I had always done for the past 12 years.  Little did I know how God would respond. Late last summer, I was diagnosed with a Femoacetublar impingement and labreal tear in my left hip (and now possibly my right).   It is a pain I have battled for years, after the birth of Cade ( I guess my friend Who told me in highschool that I had "birthing hips" was wrong!).  And, a  pain that has left me not only rarely hitting the pavement, but sometimes physically debilitated. So, as I surrendered my plans and ideas to Him, he revealed Himself strong to me.  Even with extreme pain, I have felt God's peace in my life.
So, what does this mean for a year of change?  Well,  as Chad and I sat down to plan our goals and dreams for the year,  We felt a little like this..

But, God reminded me to not get stuck in a plan, but a template. And,let's face it, even my template stinks compared to God's great vision for me.  So, even if we make a million plans for 2012,  as we did in 2011, none of them might come to fruition.   I have learned this past year to hold loosely to the things of this world, because when you do, God gives blessings.  Blessings that, yes, are more rewarding than any marathon because they last longer than just 3.5 hours.  Now, when I see a runner cruising towards me, it makes me a bit nostalgic, even though it has been only 9 months since diagnosis. As the thoughts of what I once held dear comes rushing into mind, it makes me a bit sad. But, then my hips remind my mind of their reality, and my thoughts go straight to  "how the heck do they run that far?". Spoken like a true (converted) non-runner!

As we face many massive decisions, along with many unknowns this year, including the decision of hip surgery, I get a little overwhelmed.  But, I know that God never gives what He knows we can't handle through His strength.  And, all I have to do, is look at my precious boys to know that His promises are always true.

Family Festivities

Like a lot of families I know, we rotate the holidays from year to year.  This year, we left two days before Christmas, and headed north.  Leaving at 7pm, definitely assured us no traffic, and happy sleepers.  We made it just in time for the last hustle and bustle of Christmas eve.  We had wanted to venture into the city and check out the tree, but some of us still had some last minute shopping to do.  Shopping, included the fact that I forgot to bring any pants for Cade to wear.  I guess something about Christmas, de-motivated me to take the clean laundry out of the dryer and actually put it into the suitcase.  So, off to Gap we went.  Where, they had a 40% off sale, and I got 5 pairs of pants for cade, and some underwear for Beckett, all for only $40.  The peace of the Christmas season was deeply felt when we attended my brother-in-law's church service.  The children of his congregation led the worship, and it was utterly amazing to hear the carols from the mouths of little children.  It would have made me tear, but I was too distracted with the yelps coming from Beckett's mouth, and the random "Luuke", as he watched his cousins on stage.
When we ventured home, we put the boys to bed.  Even though Cade understands Santa, we didn't make a big fuss about him or the presents he would receive the next day.  Chad and I wanted him to remember the real reason we celebrate Christmas.  This might have been even the greatest present to us, because both the boys slept in on Christmas morning.  Of course, Santa, mommy/daddy, and their grandparents treated them kindly. For Cade, Star wars seemed to be the theme of this Christmas. For Beckett, it was some super heros, some Lightning McQueen stuff, and a football (because he is obsessed).  They each got, what Cade refers to as "ipads".  But, they are learning touch screen tablets, which will be incredibly nice for all the travels we have planned for this coming year.

Later in the day we went to Uncle Rob's house, where Sue and Rob kindly hosted the entirety of the Parker family (excluding those in Illinois and NC, whom were greatly missed).  Of course, it was a blast for all of us to catch up, eat, and play a little dance, dance revolution.  Cade certainly has some skills, none of which he got from me!

The 26th brought even more craziness, as we added Chad's cousins from Brooklyn to the mix. It was so great catching up with them, as some of them I hadn't seen since our wedding! Staying up late with no naps until almost 11 both nights for the boys, proved to be wonderful as they both slept almost three hours long on our way home the 27th.  As you can see we had a merry, merry Christmas!!
Great big smiles, late at night!

The Two Christmases before Christmas

In midst of the shopping, packing, and preparing for our Christmas day celebration, we were able to squeeze in some quality family time with our favorites.
This year, my sister, Meredith and family hosted us at their house for brunch to exchange presents.  We talked a little, and ate alot! Meredith made my mom's breakfast casserole sans gluten. It was so wonderful, I took the recipe all the way with me to NJ to share with my in-laws on Christmas morning. We exchanged gifts, although, our giving was way less than theirs, since they had us this year, and we didn't.  So, not only did they host us, but they gave us awesome presents as well. Hmm..maybe we should do that every year?!I am stealing a picture from her blog, since I failed to bring my camera.
Later in the week, my parents hosted us at their house. My sister, Melissa, swung by to open up her presents from Chad and I.  Even though we didn't get tons of time with her family, I was grateful I was able to see her open some of the more sentimental gifts I have given her in recent years.  With that sentiment..my parents managed to win big in the Christmas cheer from a 4 and 2 year department by granting requests that even Santa couldn't fill.  They were in lego heaven with their individual lego tables. And,of course, a lot of other items that might take up the whole blog.
so excited to add to our city collection

i told cade he needs to practice not squinting for pictures...
beckett was hungry! but we had to do stockings first...

Of course, in my parents generous style, Chad and I made out huge. Thank you for adding to our wardrobes! We can now walk around confident that we are stylish for 2011 and not 1980...wait...the clothes are starting to look eerily similar. And, I can't wait to go get a chemical peel on my face.  Hopefully my face is still there when I am done. I am sure it will be...it is at the Ritz.  You can't go wrong with the Ritz!
After an hour of opening presents, our stomachs started growling. So,we headed to my parents local sushi  restaurant. It was such a fun treat to eat sushi with my parents. It is definitely one of our family favorites.  The boys especially love the challenge of picking up their noodles and fish with chopsticks. This challenge sure makes eating with them a lot less chaotic! That and their new star wars toys..

Thank you to my family for a great Christmas before Christmas.

Christmas Pageant

The past two years, I have looked forward to Cade's Christmas pageant.  At his preschool, every student is apart of the nativity story.  This year, he was picked to be Joseph.  Almost everyone in my family was there to cheer Cade on.  Even though he looks timid walking past us, he was a good actor on stage! In the picture, Mary is behind him, and his donkey is in front of him. His friend who played the donkey was really happy about it.  I laughed because Cade's school is the only school I have seen that actually includes the donkey in the story.
It was interesting to see how many songs these little three and four year olds can learn in a matter of two weeks.  I was quite impressed with their performance. Afterwards, there is a big shindig in the fellowship  hall of the little church that holds the preschool. Since I am one of the room moms this year, I got there early to set up.  Part of my contribution, which I kinda got sucked into doing (although I thoroughly enjoyed it), was to make a special treat for all 51 students.  So, I got crafty and made some Christmas cakepops.  The reindeers were the biggest hit.

No Christmas party would be complete without a visit from Santa.  Cade and his cousin Sophie really enjoyed taking a picture with him.  This definitely was the first year Cade was not afraid of him.
