On Holiday

Here are a few pictures from our Thanksgiving in New Hampshire.

Mmmm, turkey.

The dessert table.

Some Franzens enjoying dinner. I managed to get Aunt Susan mid-bite.

Kim celebrating her Zimzam victory over Preston.

Now who do you think is really helping here?

These last two are at the Joseph Smith birthplace memorial, where we were able to see the lighting of the lights and the little Christmas pageant. They had a donkey named Forrest.

You know what I don't like?

I don't like those live traffic feeds, where you can see who's just arrived or left the blog and from where. Isn't that a little intrusive? I don't necessarily want people I know but never talk to to know that I just arrived on their blog. Let me surf in peace, I say!

A Mid-Autumn Weekend of Bliss

We had an above-average weekend. This is why.

Friday -

Ben and Shannon talked me into going to the 10:00 showing of Twilight - something I would not normally do. I get cranky at night. It was totally worth it, though. I think we were the oldest people in the theater. It was us and a lot of emo kids. Much fun.

Saturday -

We hosted brunch at our place. On the menu: spinach and mushroom fritatta, cooked spiced apples, sausage, and a variety of juices.

The BYU football extravaganza at the Thompsons. The getting together and eating and talking part was fun. The watching Max Hall send the season down the tubes, not so much. I think Ben and Preston cried themselves to sleep that night. I managed to get over it fairly quickly.

Sunday:

Church. When the Relief Society President introduced Shannon, she mentioned that she could see the family resemblance. I'm not exactly sure what she was seeing, but it's a good story!

P.S. Preston came up with the title.

Our Northwoods Adventure

We ventured into Northern Wisconsin last weekend as Preston took on his second marathon. We had a lovely time and share it with you in photos.

This is me at our Manitowish Waters office. If you ever find yourself in legal trouble in Northern Wisconsin, give them a call! Quality service guaranteed.
This is Preston at Lake Superior.
Isn't this sign awesome? I'm kicking myself for not bringing home a mutt mitt home as a souvenir.
It was very pretty. I took this picture at a little wayside.
This one's blurry, but it has some vibrant color.

They had a old fashioned J.C. Penney's! I might have stimulated the local economy a little more, but they kicked us out at 5 p.m. to close!
Here we are after the big race. I'm sorry if my attire is offensive to anybody. It was all I had available.
This is Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty. You should go there if you're really hungry. They serve pancakes the size of Texas. If you were not aware, Paul Bunyan was called in to clear up a log jam on the Wisconsin River. So he's famous here.

And thus concludes our Northwoods Adventure.

The Robe The Robe by Lloyd C. Douglas

My review

rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book is fantastic! I enjoy Douglas's style of writing (be sure to keep a dictionary handy) and the book was fun to read. It is the story of Marcellus, a young Roman soldier, and his Greek slave Demetrius. They are stationed in Jerusalem during the last week of Jesus' life and are present at the crucifixion. They are both impressed by Jesus and feel sure that he is innocent of any crime, but it is his robe, which Marcellus wins in a game of dice, that compels them to find out more about this Galilean. What they find out truly transforms them, and as they apply these teachings, changes many people around them as well. It really made me consider how deeply these teachings, which I have known my whole life, affect my day to day actions.

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy

I don't know what the longest word in the English language is, but that one has to be on the list somewhere. I don't know exactly what it means either, but I can imagine, and it doesn't sound pleasant.

Sleep Straighteners Beware!

So, I got a new hair straightener (which works fabulously by the way) and I was reading the "Important Safety Instructions" - you know the typical "Do not use while bathing or in the shower," when I noticed this one, which had me laughing out loud.

- Never use while sleeping.

What? How can you even do that? Do some people literally fall asleep standing up while they're grooming themselves in front of the mirror each morning? And if you are a sleep walker, it's not like you can control what you do. You wouldn't think "Gee since I'm sleepwalking, I might as well plug in the hair straightener and make myself pretty." Would you? I can only imagine what dummy plugged the thing in beside their bed and tried to straighten their hair in bed while they fell asleep, then tried to sue the company so they had to include "Never use while sleeping" on their warning page. Honestly, some people...

Gee, what in the world shall I post about today?

I could post about the race last weekend that Preston and Dad medaled in, but I couldn't do because I couldn't breathe, but that's not a very pleasant memory. I could post about my job or my calling, but there's nothing new with either of those. I could post about the book I'm currently reading, which I am also thoroughly enjoying, but I'm not done yet and I want to finish it before writing about it. I could post about BYU football, but a lot of people are already doing that. I could post about my birthday...okay, I'll post about my birthday. I had a lovely day. Mom made me (and Preston and Dad) an amazing Sunday meal and a birthday cake with orange flavored frosting. Here is a picture of me blowing out the candles.
Here's another picture of me. You'd think after twenty-six years, I would have figured out how to keep my eyes open for pictures.

I know it's more blessed to give than to receive, so it's probably more blessed to talk about giving than it is to talk about receiving, but I haven't really given much lately and I have received a lot, so I'm going to briefly talk about that. I got some cool gifts, including an awesome scrapbooking organizer/tote thing, Close to My Heart scrapbooking supplies (those are way better than the ones I ever buy because I'm cheap), additions to my Little House on the Prairie series, several awesome gift cards, flowers from my bosses (random insertion - my boss calls me "E" and I laugh every time he does because I think it's funny), flowers from Preston (awwww, sweet) and several very nice e-mails. Thank you to everyone who remembered. And thank you to everyone who didn't for reading about it anyway.

Next time, I'll try to write about something other than myself for a change. Ta-ta until then.

I Heart Coupons

Well, since nobody gave me anything to post about, I will post about one of my favorite topics - Coupons. I love coupons and I use them frequently to score amazing bargains. This week has been particularly good for coupons. I like it when I save more than I spend. Like, at one store, I spent $8.97 and saved $9.28! Oooh, and Wednesdays are double coupon days at our local Pick 'n Save, so today I managed to get a roll of paper towels for a total of 29 cents. See, it was $2.29 to start with and I had a $1.oo off coupon, which they doubled to make $2.00 off. So the paper towels ending up costing me just 29 cents! And they weren't cheap ones either. They were the good kind that's thick and you can choose your own size. And they had a Box Top for Education. Am I rambling? I will put up a picture so people actually look at this post rather than just seeing that it's me going on about how cheap I am again, and finding something more interesting to read.

This is one of the earliest known photographs of Preston and me. We were going hiking in the Uintas and we stopped in Evanston for fun (or maybe it was for directions), and then we saw this gazebo, so, naturally, we had to go in and sing "You Are Sixteen Going on Seventeen." It was actually more like 22 going on 23, but whatever.

Survey

I had a heated discussion at work today about possessives. The way I was taught, you make any singular noun possessive by adding 's even if it ends in an s or x or z. The only exception is Jesus or Moses.

Example: Mr. Harris's class
the Senechaux's key
Jan Karpowitz's feelings
Moses' friends

I was typing a document with a name like Karpowitz and my co-worker tried to tell me I needed to take off the 's' and have it just say Jan Karpowitz' feelings. I said no way and got on the Internet to prove her wrong. Turns out there is conflicting information. Some people say you can say Jan Karpowitz' feelings. I say they're wrong. So I left it on anyway. What do YOU think?

The end.

Happy September

Since it is officially my birthday month, I thought I'd take the liberty of publishing my Birthday/Christmas list. Not that I'm expecting many of you to actually take heed of my birthday - in fact, I would feel bad if many of you did, but there may be some 4 or 5 readers out there who are wondering what to get their little/big sister/sister-in-law/wife/daughter for her birthday and I figured the rest of you wouldn't mind reading about just what it is I want for my birthday/Christmas.

1. The Taste of Home Cookbook (cheaper at Sam's Club).
2. The Taste of Home Baking Book.
3. Additions to my Little House on the Prairie Series. I currently have numbers 1-4: Little House in the Big Woods (the Big Woods, by the way, are the Northwoods of Wisconsin), Little House on the Prairie, Farmer Boy and On the Banks of Plum Creek.
4. A new flat iron (hair straightener).
5. An aerobic step so I can maximize my Jillian Michaels workouts.
6. A Pilates DVD.
7. Sarasa pens (conveniently sold individually in the BYU bookstore).
8. Moccasin slippers, like the ones at Payless.
9. A really amazing grammar and punctuation book (This is so I can prove all my co-workers wrong when they use comma splices and incorrect possessives). But it has to be really amazing.
10. A Bundt pan.

I may make additions to the list as I think of more items, so check back often!

Pithy

Well, it's time for me to put myself back on top of everyone's blog list, but I don't really have a whole lot to say. So how about a complaint? Now that the Olympics are over, there's nothing good on TV! Men's synchronized diving or trampolining or Olympic walking are so much more entertaining than "America's Favorite Dog" or whatever other dumb reality show is on. I guess I could just turn off the TV and read a book (I do have a lot to choose from now :) ... or I could exercise... or do a number of other more productive things.

So we bid Janet farewell a few days ago. I'd like everyone to know that before she left, we played Boggle and I won. Oh yeah--I still got it. I'd also like everyone to know that when I hugged Janet goodbye, she got a little teary. But I can't blame her--I would hate saying goodbye to me too. :)

By the way, in case you were wondering about the title, it's one of the vocabulary words I learned from the book I'm currently reading. I think it describes this post rather well.

So, let me know if you have anything specific you would like me to post about because I'm having a hard time thinking of anything interesting. Maybe watching too much TV has dulled my creative juices...

Me + Lots of Books + Very Cheap = Dangerous

So, I went a little crazy at the library's semi-annual book sale this weekend. Mom and I went down on Saturday, which was "all the books you can fit in a bag for $5" day. I filled up my bag pretty quickly and borrowed some space in Mom's, ending with a grand total of 73 books! (In case you're wondering, that comes out to less than 7 cents per book.) I thought the selection would be crummy, but they're all good ones! I found lots of treasures from my childhood, like this one:
And these ones:And this one, which all Scoresby children should remember fondly:
As soon as we got home, I spread all my books out on the floor in categories. This is what it looked like:
Then, I made a list of all the books. The categories were as follows: Christmas; Children's; Young Adult (Sub-category: Newbury Award Winners - I want to collect all of them); Classics; Poetry; and Others. I thought about publishing my list of books so you could all be amazed at the awesomeness of the event, but I am informed that others may not get as excited as I do about books. I even got some good piano music:
There's only one small problem with all these books...we don't exactly have a place to put them and I will not demean my treasures by keeping them in a box in the garage. They deserve to be displayed. We'll just have to do some bookshelf shuffling and possibly bookshelf purchasing. It totally made my weekend and I'm already gearing up for the next one in November...

P.S. I'm a nerd (just in case you didn't pick it up from this post). I just now realized that you can upload as many pictures as you want at one time. The whole time I've been blogging, I've uploaded one picture at a time. Duh, Emily.

P.P.S. I have close up pictures of the different categories of books if anyone's interested. I could also send you my list if you're dying to see it. Just let me know.

It only happens once a year...

The Wisconsin Valley Fair, that is! We had a great time at the fair on Saturday, although Preston got kind of annoyed because I kept talking about how it wasn't as great as the Knox County Fair. Well, it's true. But we had fun anyway and here are some pictures of our adventures.

Me and a cow. I like cows. I'm not sure why this one was just sitting out in the open--maybe it was sick--but don't worry, I didn't get too close.
We went to this "Gourmet" Cooking show. It turned out to be a ridiculously long advertisement for locally made, locally overpriced waterless cookware.
The sign should have been a dead giveaway. But we stuck around because he promised to give away one of the chopper things in the above picture and I wanted it. I didn't get it. I still have to catch on to the whole theory of "you get what you pay for," because I'm a cheapskate and I'm proud of it. But that's a topic for another post...
This next one's for Joanna. The duck was shy. He (or she) waddled to the back of the cage when I tried to take a picture.

Preston nonchalantly enjoying some fried cheese curds. And the main attraction...
Come on, you have to admit you know all their songs from the Saturday night Oldies show we all listened to on the way home from Stake dances. We took a video for Carl. Ironically, the song we thought was video worthy was not even a Herman's Hermits song...but it was a fun show.

I know you're probably amazed by the extreme amount of entertainment offered at the Wisconsin Valley Fair, but there's more that we didn't even get pictures of! Like my AWESOME black cherry ice cream cone, Preston's lengthy conversation with the man who offered us a free two-question test to tell us if we were going to heaven, and the picture the National Guard took of us in front of Dale Earnhardt's car. Unfortunately, you have to give them all your information to get the picture and then they don't even let you copy it. I bet if it was in Knox County, they would...

We're Back!

We didn't actually go anywhere. I just took a brief hiatus from posting. We got kind of busy, and I've been dealing with a wicked case of poison ivy (I won't post pictures, you're welcome). But back whenever I posted last, I promised you a post on what Preston's been up, so here goes:

Preston completed his first triathlon yesterday! Maybe he will come on and provide one of his rare posts to tell you about it, so I'll just share the pictures.

What a hunk.
He wanted a picture of his leg muscles too.

Here they are getting ready to jump in the lake. Can you tell which one is Preston? (Hint: he's the white one who's not wearing Spandex.)

Here he is in the transition to bike area.
And taking off on his 28-mile bike ride.

And now he's off on the 10-K run.

I'll leave it to Preston to philosophize on the whole experience, but he did a great job, especially for it being his first triathlon, and doing the long course no less!

Well, that's probably enough pictures for one day, but don't worry - you won't have to wait two more weeks for the next post, because the triathlon was only one part of an extremely exciting weekend, so stay tuned!

What Emily's been up to

I'm sure you've all been dying to know what's been occupying my time lately, so I thought I'd give you an update. Here's what's been occupying my days lately.

1. Working - I LOVE my job. It's going great. I'm learning a lot, keeping busy, I like the people I work with and the environment, so it's all good. Of course, like any job, it's difficult to start because there's so much you don't know, but I am enjoying learning it and the co-workers have been great with helping me along. It's so nice to have a job I can actually look forward to going to.

2. Exercising - I've gotten kind of bored of running, so I'm branching out my exercising routine a little. We got 1-month passes at the YMCA so we've been swimming, using the elliptical and treadmills, and lifting weights. The YMCA is super nice, but unfortunately, our passes expire this week and we probably won't be shelling out the $850 for a year's pass. We've also been riding bikes quite a bit and I've been playing some tennis. A lady in the ward tried to pressure me into joining her city-league team, but I'm just not ready for that. It does feel good to hit again, though.

3. Shopping and finding incredible bargains - I have to dress nice for work, so that's given me an excuse to buy some new clothes. Bargain hunting is like a sport for me. And I have to say, if shopping were an Olympic sport, I would be a gold medalist. Today I wore a skirt I got for $3.60 at 90% off. And it had never even been worn before!

4. Being domestic - This week I made strawberry jam all by myself from strawberries I picked all by myself. I also like trying out new recipes, although I don't have as much time to cook as before.

5. Directing the Ward choir - This calling is definitely in my top 5 list of favorite callings (along with being nursery leader of 1 in a singles ward). It's fun to choose the songs we sing and pretty much do whatever I want. Plus, I like it when the old men flirt with me. (Preston says they flirt--I just think they're very nice :) The choir here is completely backwards from any other choir I've been in. We have lots of men, almost too many, and hardly any sopranos! But I really do enjoy it even though the Bishop thinks I choose songs that are too hard...

6. Reading - You can see my current reads here.

Well, that pretty much sums up my current activities. Stay tuned for the next post: What Preston's been up to! From all of us here at Winding Ridge #1, have a good night.

Subscapularis tendons, anyone?

One of the extremely engaging tasks I get to do at work is transcribe documents that the attorneys dictate into their little mini-recorders. We often get to do summaries of a person's medical records, which can get quite complex. Here's a little snippet of what I had to decipher today.

Impression is 1) that there are small areas of partial articular sided tearing of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis tendons, with no full thickness rotator cuff tear identified and there is tendinosis in each of these areas. Small amount of intrasubstance tearing of the subscapularis tendon near its insertion is also noted. 2) Probable small enchondroma at the humeral head. 3) Mild acromioclavicular degenerative changes. The achromion is relatively downsloping, which can predispose to impingement. 4) No significant glenohumeral degenerative changes. No definite labral tear.

Try saying that five times fast.

Federer is not betterer

Not today anyway... Did anyone else see that AMAZING Wimbledon final? Nadal wins 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7. We got lucky that there was a rain delay--I said after church, "I wonder who won?" and Preston got online and saw that they were still playing, so we were able to tune in to The Best set of tennis I have ever seen. They're both so good...it totally made my day, week, and possibly month.

Franzen, Wisconsin

Preston somehow found out that there is a town in Wisconsin called Franzen. So, in the spirit of family pride, we ventured out to investigate it. Turns out, Franzen isn't so much of a town...more of just a township. There was no sign announcing "Franzen, Population 505," but because it's not within any city limits, each driveway has a little sign that says Franzen and the number. I'd invite you all out to see it, but the picture pretty much sums up the experience.

Let me know if any of you want me to look into real estate in the area.

Betcha haven't seen this...

I was going to post about our little excursion last weekend, but I can't find the camera, so instead, I decided to post about one of my FAVORITE movies--Dil Chahta Hai. A couple years ago, I had to watch some Bollywood movies for work (I know, get paid to watch movies...what a job.) I didn't really know what to expect, but turns out, I really liked them, and this one in particular. It's about three young men in India who are just graduating college and trying to find themselves, including their true loves. It actually has a really deep story about friendship, but there's a lot of funny stuff too, like how they say random words and phrases in English (a lot of their random English words are swears, but it's hilarious hearing it with their Indian accents) and the extended song and dance scenes--some of them are so ridiculous you'll about fall off your seat laughing. Anyway, if you want a good time (about 3 hours worth), find a copy and enjoy.

Here's a link to a YouTube clip of the title song. I also recommend Lagaan, which is very good (incidentally, I saw a copy at our local Hollywood Video), and Bride and Prejudice, which is not very good, but should be watched just because.

Pet Peeves

I have a grief that I would like to share with the world. It drives me crazy when I send someone a friendly email and they DON'T RESPOND. I mean, talk about rude! I know people are busy, but I also know that everyone checks their email just about every day. Why wouldn't you take 30 seconds and at least send a note saying you got someone's email and appreciate them thinking of you? It really discourages being friendly or trying to stay in contact with old friends when they don't make any effort. I need to see if Gmail has that feature that sends you a message when your email is read. That way, at least I would know people do get my messages and just don't care enough to respond. I would rather have people just tell me never to email them again than to never respond. So there's my complaint of the day.

P.S. I am not directing this post to anyone in particular. It just seems like it's happened a lot lately and it BUGS me!

Boston-mania

So in the past year, I've unintentionally become a Boston sports fanatic. Just ask me about any player on the Red Sox and I'll tell you what position he plays, what team he came from, and how good he is (example: Dice-K (Matsuzaka): Japanese pitcher, given an insane amount of money to come play for the Sox, has been somewhat of a disappointment--at least not as good as everyone made him out to be). Ask me who my favorite Red Sock (?) is and I'd tell you Jason Varitek, catcher and captain. In fact, I think I watched every game of the World Series while Preston watched about 1/2 of one game. Same goes for the Celtics. Ask me who my favorite Celtic is and I'll tell you Paul Pierce (Kansas, drafted by Boston, starter for past 10 years). Don't go thinking I sit around looking this stuff up and studying Boston athletes. It just comes up in casual conversation around here. I'm sure all this stuff is pushing other more useful information out of my brain cells, but for now that's the way it is. Go Boston!

Lonely

Sometimes I get sad because I see other people's blogs and they have a ridiculously huge list of links to their family and friend's blogs, and then I see ours and we have a pathetically short list of links, all of which are immediate family members (many of whom, incidentally, seem to have ceased posting altogether), which makes me feel small and friendless. Couple that with the fact that I get an average of 1.5 comments on each post and I find myself wondering, "Why do I even bother?" So, I say to you, my readers (if you actually do exist), that you would be providing a small act of service to me if you would comment on my posts. And if you are my friend (acquaintance will do just as well), and you read this blog, and you have a blog, let me know so that I can add you onto our link list. It may be for no other reason than to raise my self-esteem level slightly, but isn't that worth it? And, by the way, if you notice my link list mysteriously disappearing in the upcoming weeks, you will know that my whole-hearted attempts to improve my cyber friendships were in vain and I have resigned myself to my solitary status in the blogging world. Please don't let me down...

Good News, Better News

The good news: I can sleep again. I haven't been sleeping very well since we moved here for two reasons: 1) Our apartment faces the parking lot and the parking lot is very well lit, so when we turn off the light at night, it's really not very dark. We have mini blinds, but lots of light still comes in. 2) It gets light so darn early here. I keep waking to a completely light room, thinking it must be 8:00 and we overslept; then I look at the clock and realize it's only 5:15. Try going back to sleep then. So, I got some cheap fabric, broke out the sewing machine for my annual sewing project, and sewed up some curtains to use in addition to the mini blinds. I thought about taking a picture, but they're really not that aesthetically pleasing--definitely more functional than beautiful--but, I tell you, they work like a charm. The room is dark and I can sleep again. Hallelujah.

The better news: After a long and extremely frustrating search, I finally FOUND A JOB. I will be working for a law firm downtown as a legal assistant. The pay isn't that great--I was hired through a temp agency, so I'll be working for them for the first 90 days, but I think I will enjoy the work and there is definitely room for advancement. I start on Monday, which means I only have two and a half more days of doing whatever the heck I want all the time, then I am a working woman again. I'll miss watching all three hours of the Today show every morning, but it's probably for the better...

Beans and Rice

So, Preston used to listen to Dave Ramsey on AM radio all the time--he's a financial dude who helps people get out of debt, etc. Anyway, he always talks about how people like us (newly married, in school, still getting established) are in the "beans and rice" stage of life--meaning we should be living pretty simply--not going out to fancy restaurants all the time, not driving really nice cars, not taking exotic vacations, you get the point. So, we always joke about how we should be eating beans and rice more often. Because of that, I made a New Year's goal to learn to cook with beans. I'm not really doing that great on it--I'm still afraid of using dry beans that you have to soak and cook all day, but I did purchase some cans of beans when they went on sale at the grocery store and after conducting an internet search for recipes using canned beans, I found this amazing recipe for Rice and Beans using canned black beans. It is quite delicious, very easy to make, and a nice meal for the summertime when you don't want to eat a lot of meat (or are too poor to buy a lot of meat). I invite you to try it. I believe you will like it.

Doesn't look very appetizing, does it? Well, appearances can be deceiving. It is very appetizing.

P.S. I don't know if anyone likes or even reads these posts about recipes I like, but I figure this is our version of the Allred Bugle, and people put recipes in there, so I'll probably keep doing it.

Red Sox

So a couple weeks ago, Preston learned somehow (maybe espn.com, I don't know...) that the Red Sox were playing the Twins in Minneapolis. Since neither of us was working yet and Uncle Sam had just given us a little bit of money, we decided to make a day of it and drove over. Unfortunately, both cameras died before the game actually started, but I did get a few pics beforehand.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome
Clay Buchholtz, the starting pitcher. He didn't do so hot.
Jason Varitek, the catcher and the captain, warming up. Also two fish walking across the field.
What I wish I had pictures of was Manny Ramirez's 3-run homer in the first inning, or the Twins' right fielder's goof, where the ball landed in his glove, bounced up onto his head, rolled off his cap and back down into his glove. Other than that, there was nothing very remarkable about the game. What was remarkable, however, was the amount of beer consumed. And on a Monday night. Wow.

Janet's Good Luck Charm

It's too bad we didn't move here a month earlier or Janet's soccer team might have better stats. Why, you ask? Well, it's because I've discovered that I am Janet's good luck charm. You see, she has scored at least once in every game I've gone to. And, I believe the farther I travel to her games, the more she scores. We went up to Rhinelander and Janet scored three! Here she is on the very left side of the picture preparing to shoot a penalty kick (don't worry, it goes in).
Now, you may be thinking, "Yeah right Emily, Janet's just good," which is true, but get this: the one game I did not attend ended in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes! Janet's turning 18 this week; maybe she and I should take a trip to Vegas and see if I'm good luck there too...
Janet's #13 by the way.

The Big Move

Can you believe we have enough stuff to fill this truck? Pretty good for a couple who haven't even been married an entire year. Anyway, for anyone who didn't know, Preston and I have moved to Wisconsin. We're all settled into our little apartment now, and things are going great.
Preston is working at Aqua Finance, and I am actively looking for work. In our spare time, we have enjoyed going to Janet's soccer games and finding new places to run. Here are some pictures of our new digs.
