our weekends are completely free on this program, which is really nice because we can pretty much roam wherever we like. the independent woman in me deeply appreciates this. this weekend we were going to head to florence, but the weather was crappy, so we decided to keep it local. we went to padua (of taming of the shrew fame) to see st. anthony's basillica.
st.anthony is the patron saint of travelers, donkeys, amputees and most famously, replacing lost items. in one portion of the cathedral that contained his tomb, there were also walls were people had posted notes, items and pictures of things that were lost and returned to them. it's their way of saying, thanks anthony. it was kind of cool to sit in that room and see people so devoted to this saint come and give thanks to him.
we then continued on to the chapel of relics. boy oh boy do they have good relics at st anthony's chapel. anthony was a gifted orator, and so when they dug up his body in 1300 and something, it was a miracle that his tongue had not turned to dust like the rest of his body. so, they put it in a fancy glass case, surrounded by chubby cherubs. in the same panel were also his lower jaw and vocal chords. kinda gross but kind of cool too.
the rest of the afternoon, we wandered the streets and went to some of the largest open air markets in italy. it was filled with produce and other goodies, like cheeses and meats. we had lunch, walked around the city somemore and headed home. it was a rainy day allllll day, so we came back and squeezed about 10 people in 3 twin size beds, and watched 500 days of summer. we all passed out. that night we went to du champ, a bar in santa marghareta, the hopping campo of venice.
our sunday was pretty lazy, we had a shooting assignment for our photo class this weekend, so we kind of wandered finding things to shoot around the city. we went to the lido, which is a seperate island that is basically a giant beach. its nice but it was cloudy today, so i forsee sunny days at the lido in the future.
