RHB SINGAPORE CUP: GLOBAL DRUBS NAGAWORLD TO QUALIFY FOR QUARTER-FINALS
Written by: Shawn Lim
Global FC became the third team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup after a resounding 5-0 victory over Nagaworld FC in the preliminary round at Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturday night.
Hikaru Minegishi's early brace set the Filipinos on their way to victory, but goals from Mario Clarino, Omid Nazari and Daisuke Sato ensured that Global join the likes of Home United and Geylang International in the next round of the competition, where they will meet Tampines Rovers.
The designated hosts had began brightly at the ground where they endured another 5-0 defeat to Home United on their previous visit in 2014, almost opening the scoring minutes after kick off when Park Yongjun latched onto a long ball and went through on goal.
However, Global custodian Patrick Deyto came rushing off his line to parry away the South Korean's fierce drive at goal.
Having survived the early scare, Global began to press with purpose and found the breakthrough with their first shot on target in the ninth minute when Clarino's cross was met at the far post by Minegishi, who took a touch before slamming the ball into the back of the net.
Nagaworld quickly fell behind again when they failed to clear their lines after Omid's cross came off the foot of the post and Minegishi stabbed home the rebound from a similar position.
Befolo Privat had a wonderful chance to reduce the deficit for Nagaworld in the 16th minute after Global failed to deal with Sos Suhana's misplaced pass, but Deyto got down well to deny the Cameroonian's shot at goal.
Deyto's agility was put to the test again 10 minutes later when Sos played Park through on goal with a defence-splitting pass and the goalkeeper brilliantly saved the South Korean's effort with his legs.
The game was well and truly over for Nagaworld in the 32nd minute after Clarino headed home Misagh Bahadoran's corner at close range.
The Cambodians came out after the break determined to reduce the arrears and almost succeeded in the 49th minute when Tum Sary made a diagonal run across the 18-yard box to meet Privat's lofted pass, but the midfielder's header flew narrowly wide of the mark.
Global however, gradually regain a foothold in the game and could have added a fourth in the 54th minute when Omid attempted a low piledriver at the edge of the box, but Nagaworld custodian York Ary got down well to smother the ball.
Nagaworld coach Meas Channa: "It was very tough for my team today. We had chances to score in the first-half but we didn't. If we scored, maybe we could have a chance.
"Global had three chances in the first-half and they scored three goals. Football is like this."
Global FC coach Leigh Manson: "It wasn't an easy win because the players had to work hard for the result. A couple of them came off with cramps, which showed how hard they worked.
"It was the first time we have played a top Cambodian team, so it was interesting to compare ourselves with them.
"I am very very happy with the clean sheet today because our goalkeeper made three very good saves."
Nagaworld FC: York Ary (GK), Sok Rithy, Sun Sovanrithy, Mhim Sovannara, Ngoy Srin (Meng Chheng 36'), Masahiro Fukasawa (C), Sos Suhana, Tum Saray (Thorn Darapich 66'), Prak Chanratana (Sary Matnorotin 26'), Park Yongjun, Befolo Privat

Ceres debuts in Singapore Cup
By: Cedelf P. Tupas
SINGAPORE—Ceres-La Salle aims to put its AFC Cup disappointment behind when the Bacolod side tackles Garena Young Lions in its Singapore Cup debut at Jalan Besar Stadium here.
The reigning United Football League champions arrived in the Lion City still licking the wounds of their stunning 0-1 extra time defeat to South China last Tuesday in the Round of 16 of the AFC Cup.

Global and Loyola both reached the semifinals in the past couple of editions of the tournament.

NagaWorld to face Global in Singapore Cup
A squad of 18 NagaWorld players departed from Phnom Penh airport to Singapore yesterday ahead of their 2016 RHB Singapore Cup first round clash with the Philippines’ Global FC tomorrow at Jalan Besar Stadium at 6:30pm.
The two-time Metfone Cambodian League Championship coach Meas Channa has selected three foreign players in his squad for the upcoming tournament: Japan’s Mashiro Fukasawa, South Korea’s Park Yong-jun and Cameroon’s Befolo Privat.
Influential attacking midfielder Sos Suhana and defender Ngoy Srin have been included in the national squad for Sunday’s pre-Asia Cup qualifier friendly against Timor Leste. Cambodia play Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
Ahead of their trip to Singapore, NagaWorld head coach Meas Channa told the Post yesterday: “After seeing a video clip of Global highlights, I can say they are a very strong team.
“They are unbeaten in the Philippines’ United Football League and are top of their league.” “Global are good at attacking with speed. Their back four is also very strong,” Channa said.
Global are in form, having won all their first four matches in the Philippines’ United Football League, while NagaWorld sit third in the 2016 Metfone Cambodian League table with four wins, two draws and two defeats.
The current UFL leaders were also invited to take part in the tournament in 2015, when they were beaten in the semi-finals 3-1 by then Singapore champions Albirex Niigata.
NagaWorld, by contrast, finished their only previous tournament appearance in 2014 in the first round, losing 5-0 to Singapore side Home United.
Naga’s MCL rivals Phnom Penh Crown, who have made five appearances in the Singapore Cup, have lost in the preliminary round four times, only making the last eight once, in 2009.
Svay Rieng, who have played in the tournament twice, and Boeung Ket, with one appearance, were both knocked out in the preliminary round.
The winner of this match will go on to face Singapore League runners-up Tampines Rovers, a side that includes former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant.

AFC CUP RD16: JOHOR DARUL TA’ZIM 7-2 KAYA FC
Johor Baru: Juan Lucero’s hat-trick helped defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim cruise into the AFC Cup quarter-finals after a comprehensive 7-2 defeat of tournament debutants Kaya FC of the Philippines on Wednesday.
The Argentine striker opened the scoring on the quarter-hour mark before a penalty from compatriot Jorge Pereyra Diaz (pictured) and a quick-fire double from Azammuddin Akil put the hosts 4-0 up at the interval.
OJ Porteria did reduce the deficit to three goals eight minutes into the second half but Lucero restored the four-goal cushion in the next attack before Mahali Jasuli made it 6-1 to Johor.
Lucero completed his hat-trick on the 70th minute before Antonio Ugarte scored a second for Kaya in the final minute as the score ended 7-2 with Johor sending out a stark message to their AFC Cup quarter-final opponents.
"Qualifying for the quarter-finals is important, and I am happy and proud to see our team play well, especially in the first half,” said JDT head coach Mario Gomez.
"We showed we can play without Safiq Rahim, who is injured. Amirulhadi came in his place and did well, and he is also becoming an important player in the team.
"It was difficult playing on a wet pitch, but we handled the conditions well apart from one or two mistakes we made. It has been three months of heavy work where we played a match every three days, so we are looking forward to the mid-season break."
The recently-crowned Malaysia FA Cup winners were on top from the outset and started the rout on 15 minutes after Kaya captain Aly Borromeo fouled Diaz outside the box. Lucero stepped up to send the resulting direct free kick into the net and put the hosts ahead.
Things went from bad to worse for the United Football League outfit when Borromeo was judged to have fouled Diaz inside the box eight minutes later. Diaz stepped up to drill the spot kick into the bottom of the net and double the lead before a swift counter attack in the 33rd minute led to a third goal for the defending champions.
Izham Tarmizi started the move with a long clearance that led to Diaz racing down the left and crossed for Azammuddin to slide home inside the box.
Azammuddin scored his second seven minutes later when he produced a delightful shot from the edge of the penalty area that sailed into the top far corner of the goal as Johor went into the break four goals ahead.
Kaya pulled one goal back eight minutes into the second half as an Aidil clearance hit the crossbar and reached the path of Porteria who slid the ball below Izham into the goal from a tight angle on the left.
Johor replied instantly to make it 5-1 after Diaz’s set-up Lucero who fired past Kaya goalkeeper Matthew Acton from inside the box.
Another piece of individual skill from Diaz in the 69th minute saw Mahali well-positioned to control the ball near the penalty spot before finishing with aplomb for their sixth goal.
And Lucero completed his hat-trick two minutes later when he beat the offside trap and slotted past Acton inside the box in a one-on-one.
There was still time for another goal, this time from Kaya as Ugarte converted a cross from Porteria inside the box two minutes from time to reduce the deficit but it barely made a dent in Johor’s lead as the Malaysians roared their way into the AFC Cup quarter-finals.
"The first goal we conceded really surprised us because we were not ready when it happened,” said Kaya coach Joel Villarino. “I did not know what happened to our goalkeeper because we were not able to adjust right away to the free kick.
"It was a very good experience against the defending champions. Some of us were new in facing big crowds away, especially when we were up against the quality of the champions. We tried our best, but our best was not good enough in the game of tactics.”

AFC CUP - RD16: JOHOR DARUL TA’ZIM V KAYA FC PREVIEW
Johor Baru: Johor Darul Ta’zim coach Mario Gomez is sweating on the fitness of captain Safiq Rahim ahead of Wednesday’s last 16 clash with visitors Kaya FC of the Philippines in the AFC Cup, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake at Stadium Tan Sri Dato' Haji Yunos.
Malaysia midfielder Rahim (pictured) was named MVP of last year’s tournament as Johor became the first team from East Asia to win the continental competition with a 1-0 win over Tajikistan’s FC Istiklol.
And Rahim has also been on fine form in the year’s edition with seven goals in the group stage putting him in third place in the top scorers list and helping Johor top Group H with a 100% record.
“We must see the fitness of Safiq Rahim today because we don't know whether he will be involved as a starter, substitute or not at all,” said Gomez, who guided Johor to the 2015 AFC Cup title after moving to Johor Baru from Hong Kong’s South China a year ago.
“It is only one game and we play at home. Our ambition is to retain the AFC Cup, so we have to win the game tomorrow before the long mid-season break.
“Kaya have good players because they qualified into the next round. Their striker [OJ Porteria] and defender [Aly Borromeo] are notable key players. They also have young and fast players, so it is not going to be easy for us."
AFC Cup debutants Kaya, meanwhile, will have to do without Louis Clark after the forward received his second yellow of the group stage in the Matchday Six goalless draw away to New Radiant of the Maldives earlier this month.
The Filipino side did, though, enjoy a comfortable 10-2 defeat of Forza FC last Wednesday in their most recent outing in the United Football League.
“We are really excited because being a first-timer in the AFC Cup, we have gone this far,” said Kaya coach Joel Villarino.
“Johor are one of the strongest teams in the tournament. We are glad to have the honour of playing against the defending champions in front of a strong crowd.
"We have to showcase our abilities. We have done our homework on Johor. We have to concentrate throughout and show our teamwork.”
South China ends Ceres AFC Cup run
A goal in the second half of the extension period from Brazilian Luis Carlos of South China AA ended Ceres-La Salle's historic campaign in the AFC Cup at the Pana-ad Stadium in Bacolod City last night.
With both teams playing a high level game, a goalless regulation forced the extra 30-minute extra time where Ceres remained dominant while South China was looking for that single opportunity to score.
“We did not come here to settle for a draw. We had been looking forward for that situation when we can score the goal,” said South China head coach Ricardo Rambo, who took over the job two months ago.
The Brazilian coach said playing against Ceres was difficult as it is a strong team but their persistence was rewarded with a wonderful goal in the end.
That single mistake in their defense cost them the match, Ceres' head coach Franklin Muescan admitted.
While they managed to dominate ball possession in both halves of the regulation, Muescan said they failed to capitalize and they missed several opportunities to score.
“A single mistake…we can not avoid it. It is part of the game. We are almost there and we were so unlucky. But that is football,” Muescan said.
With both teams failing to score in the regulation, he said they were not expecting a shootout. Muescan said they were expecting Ceres to score as they had been controlling the tempo.
Player of the match Bienvenido Marañon said everyone played well and while they lost the match, their focus now shifts to the UFL League where a top finish will allow them to compete again in the AFC Cup next year.
The team is also scheduled to leave for Singapore this week to join the Singapore Cup.*NAB

AFC CUP - RD16: CERES LA SALLE FC V SOUTH CHINA PREVIEW
Bacolod City: AFC Cup debutants Ceres La Salle will be banking on the support of their home crowd at Pana-ad Park and Football Stadium in Tuesday’s AFC Cup last 16 clash with Hong Kong’s South China according to coach Franklin Muescan.
The Filipino club won Group E ahead of Singapore’s Tampines Rovers with an undefeated record, chalking up two of their three wins on their own turf.
But with first-ever place in the quarter-finals at stake against 2013 semi-finalists South China, Muescan (pictured) is looking for a landmark performance from his side in front of their fans.
“South China is a big opponent and probably the best team we will be playing against in the history of the club. But we are the home side and we want to use this advantage,” said Muescan.
“We know that the Hong Kong Premier League is strong and their local players are good. South China is an established club and playing against them will be a great experience.
“It’s hard to pinpoint any weakness in South China, but from our end, we want to show that we have good team spirit and we believe in the quality and capability of our players.”
South China crucially beat India’s Mohun Bagan on the final Matchday a fortnight ago to finish second in Group G behind the I-League side and edge out Myanmar’s Yangon United by a point.
By the mid-way point of the group stage, though, that outcome looked unlikely after three straight defeats. However, under the management of Ricardo Rambo the side surged back to snatch a place in the Round of 16 after a run of three consecutive victories.
“We’ve had good results in the past three games, but this game is very important and we want to do well in the AFC Cup,” said South China coach Rambo, who saw his side defeated at the semi-final stage of the Hong Kong Premier League Season Play-Off after a 2-1 defeat to Southern District on Saturday.
“The team morale is very high and we’re very eager to get a win to reach the next round, which is important for a club with history like South China.”
“We know we will be playing a compact team which is also very hard-working with some quality play. I am very confident we can get the win but to do so we have to play very smart.”

U-14 girls out to give AFC foes tough fight
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines expects to give its rivals in the 2016 Asean Football Confederation (AFC) Under-14 Girls’ Regional Championship for the Asean zone in Laos a run for their money.
Coach Joyce Landagan said they have pooled together the technically good and intelligent youngsters and prepared them for at least one full month for the May 31-June 5 tourney.
The Phl girls are bunched with host Laos, favorite Thailand and Cambodia in Group A. The other group is comprised of Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam.
“I think kaya natin lumaban nang maganda (we’ll be competitive against our rivals),” Landagan said yesterday on “The Football Connection” program on DZSR.
The coaching staff draws confidence from the girls’ performance in the Jenesys Asean U-14 football exchange program last March in Japan, where they beat Laos, 1-0, and lost a close 1-2 decision to the Thais.
Phl U-14 girls will open their campaign against the Laotians on May 31, then tackle holder Thailand the next day and Cambodia on June 2. The Filipinas will seek to finish in the top 2 of the group to reach the crossover semis.
“We need to win at least two games (to progress to the semis),” said Landagan.
The country had previously achieved success in the AFC U-14 Girls’ Regionals as it won a historic silver medal in the 2014 edition. Landagan was an assistant coach on that team.
“We have a stronger team now. They’re technically good,” said Landagan.
The finalists in the Asean meet will advance to the tournament AFC U-14 Girls’ Championship, where Bangladesh, India, Jordan and Bahrain have already qualified from the first two zones.

Wanted: Higher-rated foe for Azkals
By: Cedelf P. Tupas
WITH the Philippine Azkals unable to find an opponent for a friendly match in the next international break, coach Thomas Dooley will hold a training camp for his expanded pool that will include Under-22 standouts in the first week of June.
The Azkals are preparing for the group stage of the prestigious AFF Suzuki Cup, which the country will host for the first time from Nov. 19 to 26 at Philippine Sports Stadium in Bulacan.
Dooley wanted to face an opponent ranked higher than the No. 115 Azkals during the international window, but the Philippine Football Federation said teams in the coach’s radar have already scheduled matches with other countries.
Syria was supposed to play the Azkals in the first week of June, but football officials of the war-torn country informed the PFF last month that it was no longer pursuing the match.
Azkals manager Dan Palami is looking at the positive side of the team’s predicament.
“At least, we can get a closer look at some fresh talent that could make an impact on the team,” said Palami.
The Azkals are setting their sights on a first Suzuki Cup crown, after three straight semifinal appearances, starting in 2010 in Vietnam.
PFF president Mariano “Nonong” Araneta earlier confirmed two friendly matches against Kyrgyzstan with the Azkals traveling to Bishkek for a game on Sept. 16.
The Azkals will host the second friendly in Manila on Nov. 9.
South China AA heads for Bacolod Sunday for knockout match vs. Ceres
The Hong Kong-based South China Athletic Association football team is scheduled to arrive Sunday in Bacolod City, two days before the single- knockout match against home team Cere-La Salle Football Club in the Round of 16 of the AFC Cup 2016 at the Panaad Stadium.
South China qualified into the Round of 16 after finishing No. 2 in Group G of the group stages behind No. 1 team Mohun Bagan of India. The team absorbed three straight losses in the group but managed to bounce back by winning their last three games to finish with 9 points.
The team from Hong Kong opened their campaign with a 1-2 away loss against Yangon United of Myanmar, and was overpowered by Mohun Bagan, 0-4, at their own home pitch at Mongkok Stadium in Hong Kong.
Their third match in the group stages against Maziya Sports and Recreation of Maldives ended 2-1 in favor of the Maldivians.
South China, however, got their grooves back as they posted back-to-back home victories, 2-0 against Maziya and 2-1 against Yangon United. They clinched a spot into the knockout stages after a 3-0 away win against Mohun Bagan at the Indira Gandhi Stadium.
Meanwhile, the members of the Ceres-La Salle team are coming home to Bacolod City today after claiming back-to-back wins of their own in the ongoing UFL League, 6-0 against the Nomads on May 14 and 10-1 against the Agila on Wednesday.
The Busmen were undefeated in the group stages where they emerged No. 1 in Group E. After settling for a 2-2 draw against the Selangor FA at the Panaad Stadium, the team beat home team Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi in Bangladesh, 2-0, then escaped with a 1-1 draw against Tampines Rovers in Singapore.
A 2-1 win against Tampines at the Panaad Stadium catapulted the team to the top of the group and the scoreless draw in Kuala Lumpur against Selangor virtually ushered the squad to the Round of 16.
The Bacolod City-based squad formalized their entry into the knockout stages after dominating the Bangladeshi-squad, 5-0, at the Panaad Stadium.*

Laos forgoes morning kickoff against GAU
By Ivan Saldajeno
MANILA--Green Archers United was credited with a 3-0 win after Laos failed to show up in their supposed UFL clash at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Sunday.
Scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. kickoff, Laos opted to forgo their match-up with GAU, effectively giving the latter the victory.
The reason behind Laos' forfeiture is unknown as of posting.
This is the second time GAU got a forfeiture win this season. Curiously, the first came against Laos' sister team Global when the latter's UFL Cup win was overturned because they fielded an excessive number of foreign players in the said game.

Stallion bucks last-second scare, downs Kaya
By Ivan Saldajeno
MANILA--Balut Doctora's goal appeared to have sufficed for Stallion in their UFL clash with Kaya.
The three-time champs, however, made it interesting at the death.
The 2013 winners survived one final stand from the league's winningest franchise to escape with a 1-0 victory at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on Sunday night.
Doctora displayed his veteran smarts in the 25th minute by beating Matt Acton and slotting what would be the only goal of the match.
However, Stallion only walked out of the woods after staving off Kaya's late push.
With about five seconds left in the game, Aly Borromeo almost spoiled Roland Sadia's clean sheet as the Kaya skipper's header went high past the Stallion keeper, but the ball hit the post and Robert Mendy's second serving took a deflection before the ball went straight to the goalie.
It was Stallion's first win of the league season, putting them back in the early title picture following two straight defeats.

Global wards off Loyola Sparks, solidifies UFL lead
by Olmin Leyba
MANILA, Philippines – Daisuke Sato struck early as Global FC held off Loyola Meralco Sparks FC in a clash of contenders, 1-0, to firm up its hold of the lead in the UFL League tournament at Rizal Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
Sato eluded multiple defenders before sending it home at the 11th minute to give Global the cushion for its fourth straight victory at the expense of fancied Loyola Meralco for a league-leading 12 points.
The Sparks, who turned up the heat on offense in the second half with ace Phil Younghusband coming off the bench in his first game out of sick bay, suffered their maiden setback after a 2-0 start and shared second spot with idle JP Voltes (six points).
Global captain Misagh Bahadoran lauded his teammates for staying focused and relentless in the midst of a tight schedule this week marred by a burglary at their locker rooms last Thursday.
“Great performance even though we had three games in a week and we lost our phones and wallets two days before the game. The guys showed how professional and hardworking they are both inside and outside the pitch,” said Bahadoran.
Sparks defender Anton del Rosario suffered an injury in the same sequence where Sato knocked in the marginal goal for Global in the first half. Global nearly doubled the lead when a penalty kick was awarded but Ivan Petrovic sent it wide.
The Sparks came out more aggressive in the second half but James Younghusband, Simon Greatwich and Alvaro Castiella didn’t hit the target. Phil Younghusband, who last saw action in the Cup, was unexpectedly sent in and energized the team but still the Sparks couldn’t buy the equalizer.
Meanwhile, Nate Burkey fired a hat- trick as Ceres La Salle FC picked up its first win via a 6-0 drubbing of Manila Nomads.
Burkey found the back of the net at the second, 14th and 86th minutes to lead the scorching attack that also saw Orman Okunaiya (44’), Bienve Marañon (79’), and Marvin Angeles (70’) joining the scoring fray.

Hat trick for Gallardo as Ceres tops AFC Cup 2016 Group E Qualifier
Spanish striker Adrian Gallardo scored a hat trick last night as Ceres-La Salle Football Club demolished Lt. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club from Bangladesh, 5-0, to finish on top in Group E of the AFC Cup 2016 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City.
A tap-in in the 9 th minute following a blast from Bienvenido Marañon a couple of minutes earlier allowed Gallardo to set the tone for Ceres' domination against the visiting Bangladeshi squad.
Gallardo registered his second goal and Ceres' third in the 57 th minute off a pass from Patrick Reichelt. Seven minutes later, he completed the hat trick and registered his 8 th goal in the tournament with the trademark “Adrian strike” as Ceres pulled away, 4-0.
Reichelt sealed the win in the 70 th minute as he sent the ball into the net after receiving a pass from Gallardo.
“We had a good game…we are very happy as we finished on top of the group. We made history as the first Philippine team to advance in the next round,” Ceres head coach Franklin Muescan said.
Everything boils down to how well the team prepared for the tournament as Muescan thanked team owner Leo Rey Yanson for his support during the post-match press conference.
Lack of preparation was the reason why Sheikh Jamal went down nil-5 against Ceres, their head coach Shafiqul Islam Manik said.
Traveling 24 hours from Dhaka to Bacolod City after completing a tournament in Bangladesh took its toll on the players.
“This was the worst match we had after playing six games in the tournament. We are not prepared…the players are tired going out there playing for 90 minutes after travelling for more than 20 hours,” coach Manik added.
The Bangladeshi squad arrived in Bacolod City late Monday afternoon barely 24 hours before the match.
“In this kind of tournament, you need a good preparation and we did not have that. It's not excuse for losing but that is our excuse,” the Sheikh Jamal coach said.
Meanwhile, Ceres will play the knock-out game in the Round of 16 against South China (Hongkong ) on May 24 at the Panaad pitch.
Muescan said among their problems are the accumulated yellow cards and the tight schedule in the UFL League.
“It will be hard four us. We have several games lined up in the UFL before May 24 and need to rest our players,” Muescan said.*NAB
