I've been busy lately catching up on my scrapbooking. Not really catching up because that will never happen, but I am really proud of myself for FINALLY finishing the 2008 scrapbook.

Nature's Superfood

Yesterday Jason and I picked blueberries for the first time. I soon realized that I will be buying my blueberries already picked from now on. They are so small that it takes forever to get a good amount. The sun was pelting down on us (I think it got up to 80 degrees yesterday) so we called it a day quite quickly. I'm sure Jason ate twice as much as he had in his container. He said it was because he was being discriminating, but I know that's not true (he LOVES blueberries).

This is him being discriminating.
This is all we got. It came to a grand total of $1. They are very yummy, so we'll probably go back and buy a flat before the season is over.

Crash Em' Up County Fair

One standing requirement for Jason is to go to a demolition derby every summer. Luckily the derby is part of the free entertainment at our county fair.
The pink rooster car was my favorite.
We got some excitement when one of the cars flipped over.
After the derby we checked out the rest of the fair.
We saw a pirate parrot show and learned that every time we throw away an aluminum can, we're essentially killing a parrot in the Amazon. Us being the cynical people we are now say as we're throwing away our cans, "There goes another parrot." I know it's bad, but I'm just trying to keep it real here. :)
There were several small parrots that were trained to take money from audience member's hands. The novelty worked on me.
The star of the day was Daisy, the baby pig at the petting zoo. Everyone (including Jason) was saying that we HAVE to get a pig. I don't think so.
She was very cute, though.
I love our county fair because we can see llamas, alpacas and cavies (guinea pigs).
Too cute! The arrival of the county fair always reminds me that summer will soon be over. What fun will we try to cram in before school starts? Only 2 more weeks!

Camas

Ever since we first visited the quaint town of Camas, we fell in love with it. It's hard to believe that it's so close to Portland. It feels like a world away. It has a wonderful historic district with a discount theater, restaurants and quirky antique shops.
A couple of weeks ago we went to Camas Days. I was interested to see the bathtub races.
I was hoping I would see all manner of homemade bathtub vehicles, but the same two bathtubs were raced in each round. It was still funny because the fire department made sure the bathtubs were filled with water.
The main street was filled with booths and activities. Ethan and Caleb tried out the climbing wall.
Last week the street was decked out in quilts for the quilt and fiber arts festival. There were some great examples of yarn bombing.

There's always something fun happening in Camas. We find ourselves there a lot!

Don't Mess With Texas

At the end of July, Ethan and I had our own adventure. We went to Galveston, TX to spend time with my sister Marie, her kids, my brother Tim, my sister-in-law Natalia and their daughter Olivia. This was a new experience for me because I had never been to Texas or anywhere in the South. The first thing that hit me was the heat and humidity. It hit me like a brick wall and sucked all the life out of me. It hasn't even hit 90 degrees here in Washington this summer, so it was quite the change!
On our first day at the beach there was a storm coming in so the water was wild. The water was so warm! I'm used to the icy cold waters on the Oregon coast, so this was a real treat. Ethan was totally loving being able to body board in the water. We were catching some wild waves that day.

The next day we went to The Strand, an historic district with shops and restaurants. We were wilting quickly in the stifling heat, so we decided to take a dolphin watching boat ride. It felt good to get a cooling breeze.
I was going to demand my money back if I didn't see any dolphins. Luckily I didn't have to do that.

The mini golf course in Galveston had the best view ever! Way better than Cherry Hill. Ethan, Kayla and I played in a group and they got schooled!
They gave it a good shot, though.
Ethan then did what he said was the best thing he's ever done in his whole life. He and Mariel got strapped into this bungee cage and were catapulted into the air. It was crazy!
The next day was beautiful, so we decided to go to the beach at the seawall.
As you can see it's a wall and a small strip of beach.

We walked over to a building on the water to get a great view off the deck.
By the way that's water on my shirt, not sweat. :)

We had a great time reconnecting with family--playing games, telling stories and getting to know each other better. It felt nice to be in the majority as a girl for a while. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

Another Visit

A week after saying goodbye to Jason's brother's family, we had a visit from Grandma and Grandpa. We were so excited to show them our home and the area. We ate Jason's yummy battered halibut that he caught himself and had a campfire in the backyard. We had a bit of excitement when the Pyrex dish that contained our breakfast exploded on the stove. Grandma quickly got us a new one at the DI. We also took a very interesting tour of the Pendleton Woolen Mill in Washougal. We got to see what happens to the wool as it is dyed, made into thread, then woven into fabric. Unfortunately we couldn't take any pictures.
The next day we took a drive to the Oregon coast.
Everyone needs the experience of feeding the animals at Blue Heron French Cheese Co. Grandma didn't appreciate the goat slobber. Then we stopped to get an ice cream cone at the Tillamook cheese factory (of course!).
Then a quick stop at Rockaway Beach. If you're looking for cool weather in July, this is the place to be.
Hopefully this photo conveys how cold the water was.
Then we went to Fort Clatsop near Astoria. This is where Lewis and Clark spent the winter before heading back to the eastern US.
Here Ethan is learning more by reading braille.
We enjoyed so much seeing Grandma and Grandpa again and showing them our "country" life in the forest.

A Shore Thing

After spending a couple of days at our house, we all spent 3 days on the coast together seeing the sights and playing on the beach. Jason, the kids and I stayed in Cannon Beach. We hadn't spent much time there before, but it turned out to be a great place to stay. It had lots of quaint shops and a candy shop we visited more than once. Caleb found this mask in an import store.
We covered a lot of area over three days. The first day was spent in and around Tillamook. We went to the Tillamook cheese factory of course!
We also went to Cape Meares lighthouse, but it was too foggy to even see the ocean.
On our second day started off with exploring tide pools at Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach.
Classic Jason-Pepsi in hand and acting silly.

Then it was off to Astoria. This is from the top of the Astoria column.
Then we went to the docks to see the sea lions. There was only one there at the time, but one was all we needed. We annoyed him pretty quickly.
Then a stop at a shipwreck.
Our last stop that day was Seaside. We got there pretty late, so we went back the next day to see more of the town. Here's Shawn with the Seaside Candyman.
Some of us did a little crabbing off the 12th St. bridge.
Of course we can't catch a crab without humiliating it. This guy is drinking a gummy bottle of cola.
It was a beautiful day for the beach. Ethan always insists on going to our favorite beach-Indian beach. There are always surfers there.
And lots of rocks and tide pools to explore. This is Ethan's bucket o' crabs.
Another great idea of Ethan's was playing a joke on the seagulls a la Jason and Shawn's childhood "Magic Carpet ride".

We had a great time while Shawn, Melissa and their family were here. We love to show off this great area we live in, so come pay us a visit!

Willamette Jet Boats

While the Farnworth family was in town we all went on a 2 hour jet boat tour. It was a great way to see Portland. I loved jetting under the bridges. What I loved most was when the boat captain did 360's in the water. It got us all wet, but it was so fun!

We even got to see a bald eagle.
We went all the way to Willamette Falls.

And we all survived!
