Review: Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce
Sisters Red
Written by Jackson Pearce
Release Date: June 7, 2010
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
The very first time I saw the cover of this book I knew that I had to read it! This cover is one of the best I have EVER seen!! I love how the wolf and the sisters are all part of one another- very clever and fitting I think.
Summary from Goodreads:
"Scarlett March lives to hunt the Fenris-- the werewolves that took her eye when she was defending her sister Rosie from a brutal attack. Armed with a razor-sharp hatchet and blood-red cloak, Scarlett is an expert at luring and slaying the wolves. She's determined to protect other young girls from a grisly death, and her raging heart will not rest until every single wolf is dead.
Rosie March once felt her bond with her sister was unbreakable. Owing Scarlett her life, Rosie hunts fiercely alongside her. Now Rosie dreams of a life beyond the wolves and finds herself drawn to Silas, a young woodsman who is deadly with an ax-- but loving him means betraying her sister and has the potential to destroy all they've worked for.
Twenty-five-year-old Jackson Pearce delivers a dark, taut fairy tale with heart-pounding action, fierce sisterly love, and a romance that will leave readers breathless."
My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this book! As a pre-k teacher, I love all of the classic folktales, and Jackson Pearce has done a wonderful job putting a modern-day spin on the classic 'Little Red Riding Hood' tale. This book was so action-packed and scary. After reading this, I caught myself double checking behind me when I would go outside at night! The author did a really great job with character development. The bond between Scarlett and Rosie was beautiful and I loved how they were completely devoted to one another. They were also devoted to hunting and killing the Fenris. Scarlett had an intensity about her and was so fiercely driven to protect not only Rosie, but all young girls from the grisly fate of the Fenris. The hunt is just a part of Scarlett. Her relentless drive to hunt the wolves was annoying to me at times and did seem a bit extreme, but that is what makes her who she she is. I think that Rosie and Silas felt this way about her too. They both wanted more out of life than the blood of the Fenris, and Scarlett's unwavering drive was too much for them at times. Rosie devotion to hunting seemed to stem more out of obligation to Scarlett than a true desire to hunt. When Silas reappeared in the sisters' lives, Rosie began to yearn for a life outside of hunting. She wanted a little normalcy. Silas wanted a chance at that too. I enjoyed the relationship that began to grow between Rosie and Silas. Silas was such a great guy, one who was always there to say the right thing at the right time, or to just lighten the mood. I found myself rooting for their relationship.
I liked how the chapters alternated point of views between Scarlett and Rosie. This really enabled the reader to see both sides of the story. It also allowed you to really get to know the characters. Just like the old saying goes...."There are always two sides to every story!" The pace of the book was fast and I enjoyed the ending (eventhough I predicted the ending well before I finished the book). I would be cautious of recommending this to young readers that may scare easily. There is quite a bit of gory violence in the fight scenes and lots of blood- so if that kind of stuff bothers you, then you might want to think twice about reading it. I really liked the story and its originality, and I look forward to the next installment in the series!

Waiting On Wednesday
"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill from Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating. It is always so hard to decide which books I want to feature on Wednesdays. There are so many wonderful books coming out this year. Waiting is such torture! Here are a few that I am waiting for:
The Iron Daughter (The Iron Fey #2)
"Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan’s own fey powers have been cut off. She’s alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can’t help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart."
This Gorgeous Game

Release Date: May 25, 2010
Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Summary from Goodreads:
"I know I know I know I should be grateful. I should be grateful to have his attention. To have him take such an interest in me.
I should. I know I should.
I will. No, you are grateful, Olivia, I tell myself as if I am my self's imaginary friend, sitting across the table, giving advice. Start acting grateful then, she begs.
I have a gift. I have a gift from God, he says. So rare he hasn't seen it in all his many years. I'm the real thing, he says. I'm a once in a lifetime, he says. I'm special and it's his responsibility to take me under his wing, to make sure I don't waste my talent. It would be a sin not to help me, he says. It would be a sin for me not to take his offer of help.
But I swear to God . . . no . . . scratch that . . . I'll not be swearing to God . . . I swear to Who Knows What that his latest demand, this pile of typewritten pages he hands me with a face that says, Please, Olivia, oh please don't be difficult and just do this for me, is staring, no it's glaring at me from the coffee table like a monster that might eat me. I feel like if I touch it I will go up in flames or the pages might bite.
Am I making too much of this? Isn't it just a matter of grabbing hold of the stack and moving it in front of my eyes so my eyes will begin to scan those black marks on the page which will magically arrange themselves into words that my brain will recognize and understand and volia, I'm finished before I know it.
Then, when he asks, because he will ask, I'll be able to answer truthfully, "Yes, I read it. I did," and he will smile and I'll be Good Olivia again.
I wish I'd never won that stupid prize which is what got me noticed by him . . . no . . . what got my writing noticed by him which is what led to the initial introduction which somehow turned into communications and invitations and coffees and attending office hours and going to High Profile Events together--his words--even before the summer started."

Interview with ARSON's Estevan Vega!
Arson Summary from Barnes and Noble:
"Arson Gable feels like a freak. He can create fire. He never asked for it. He never wanted it. But he can't shut it off. Before now, three things were true: he both loved and despised his grandmother; his life was going nowhere; and he was alone. But when a strange girl—who feels more normal behind a mask than inside her own skin—moves in next door, Arson hopes to find something he's never had: purpose. Using what he fears most about himself, Arson must face his consuming past and confront the nightmare that is his present as he walks the fine line between boy and monster. Dark, moody, and breathtakingly relevant, Arson, the chilling chronicle of an isolated boy with unimaginable ability, is sure to ignite the hearts and minds of a new generation."
About the Author (taken from his bio):
I will begin by saying that Arson took me by surprise! I was not expecting to sit down and read it cover to cover in a day! It is definitely not a light read, but a beautifully written journey into some pretty dark and heavy issues. Many of those issues teens and adults face daily, such as family dysfunction, the pressure to fit in, divorce, peer pressure, alcoholism, dealing with insecurity, and more. I've read that this book is very personal to you and was written during a tough time in your life. Was writing Arson a therapeutic experience for you? And how much of yourself do you see in Arson Gable?
*It is amazing that you were publishing your first book at the age of 15 and now you are out here promoting your third book at the ripe old age of 21! Do you feel that your age has helped or hampered you while navigating the let's just say difficult publishing industry? And what lessons have you learned through your own experiences (positive and negative) that may help the young, aspiring writers reading this interview?
*Describe a "Perfect" day in the life of Estevan Vega!

The Friday 56 (April 16, 2010)
- Grab the book nearest to you right now.
- Turn to page 56.
- Find the fifth sentence.
- Post that sentence (plus one or two others if you like).
- Post a link along with your post back to Storytime with Tonya and Friends.
The closest book to me is the next book I plan on reading/reviewing. It is a new ya vampire book by debut author, Brenda Pandos, titled The Emerald Talisman.
Page 56/ 5th sentence(and a few extras):
" I turned before I heard the angry snarl. The noise came from just beyond the trees. Frozen in fear, I waited and watched. Evil green eyes appeared and stared out at me with lips curled up to reveal teeth ready to rip me to shreds."
**Sounds good! I can't wait to start reading this one!!

Review: Arson by Estevan Vega
Written by Estevan Vega
Have you ever read a book that took you by complete surprise and kept you glued within its pages start to finish? Well, Arson by Estevan Vega was that type of read for me! I seriously read this book cover to cover in one sitting (minus 30 pages)! There are so many different ways to describe this book. I could say that it was dark, real, and riveting. I could say that it was beautifully written and powerful. I could say that it was intelligent, layered, and a little twisted! But I guess it all boils down to this... it is a really good book!!
Summary from Barnes and Noble:
My Thoughts:
This is the kind of book that stays with you after you read it. To me, it was a story of the human condition at its worst and its best. Estevan did an incredible job developing the characters in the book. They all had more to them than the visible layer, yet still maintained a simplicity that was so raw and human. I found myself caring for them, rooting for them, feeling sorry for them, laughing at them, getting mad at them, but mostly just connecting with them. Each had their own dark journey into some pretty difficult and heavy issues (family dysfunction, peer pressure, alcoholism, abuse, insecurity, wanting to fit in, and divorce). These issues are ones that teens and adults face everyday. The character's individual struggles seemed so real and authentic that they became absolutely real to me while reading. I loved Emery and her sassy wit and sarcasm. She was a really cool girl and was able to see Arson in a way that no one else (including Arson himself) could. She had a really screwed up family life and found solace in Arson and his nonjudgmetal view of her decision to wear the mask. Arson was such a tortured soul. He was so full of regret and just wanted a chance at redemption. I think that he saw Emery as his chance to make up for his past. It was fun to watch their relationship grow and I wanted it to work between them so badly. Arson's 'talent' isn't fully revealed until you've read a good chunk of the book. The small glimpses that you do see only fuel the suspense as to what he is really capable of. The ending was completely unexpected! It was a "No way- that did not just happen!" kind of ending! It was a cliff hanger that left the door wide open and screaming for a sequel. I can't wait to find out what happens next for Arson, Emery and the rest of characters. As far as recommendations go.... this isn't a light read for sure and there are references to mature topics like sex and infidelity, so I would say 9th grade and up. The content of Arson may be dark, but the skill that the ultra-talented Estevan Vega delivers it with allowed me to see past that darkness into the lives of these incredible characters that now have a place in my heart.
About The Author (taken from his bio):
**If you can't wait until May 4th to get your copy, then head over to the publisher's website where you can snag your copy NOW!!! Yeah!! City of Fallen Angels (Mortal Instruments, #4)
Written by Cassandra Clare
Release Date: March 31, 2011
Published by Simon Pulse
Summary from Goodreads:
"City of Fallen Angels takes place after the events of City of Glass. It splits its focus between Jace and Clary and Clary’s best friend, Simon, and how he adjusts to life as a vampire, but it’s still an ensemble-cast story, and all the characters from the Mortal Instruments series appear in it: Jace, Isabelle, Alec, Magnus, Luke, Jocelyn, Maia, and many more. (It even helps to have read The Clockwork Angel before you read CoFA, because some of the characters from the ID series do show up in it. However, it isn’t required.) In City of Fallen Angels, someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and leaving their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters. Internecine warfare among vampires is ripping the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Meanwhile Jace and Clary investigate a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels."
I have heard through other blogs that this is a fan art cover. It is still really cool though!! I know it is a while until this one comes out, but when I saw it on Goodreads I couldn't resist!

Review: Twilight - The Graphic Novel Volume 1
Twilight: The Graphic Novel Volume 1
Written by Stephenie Meyer
Art and Adaptation by Young Kim
Published by Yen Press
Available Now!!
I will admit that I have never been a graphic novel fan. I do own the first volume of the Dark Hunter Series graphic novel by Sherrilyn Kenyon (cause I love me some Dark Hunters!!), but that's it. I really didn't have any intention of purchasing the Twilight Graphic Novel- until I picked it up off the shelf and looked at it! It is truly beautiful!
Summary from Goodreads:
"When Isabella Swan moves to the gloomy town of Forks and meets the mysterious, alluring Edward Cullen, her life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. With his porcelain skin, golden eyes, mesmerizing voice, and supernatural gifts, Edward is both irresistible and impenetrable. Up until now, he has managed to keep his true identity hidden, but Bella is determined to uncover his dark secret... Beautifully rendered, this first installment of Twilight: The Graphic Novel is a must-have for any collector’s library."
My Thoughts:
As I stated earlier, I have never been a graphic novel fan. That being said.... I am a fan of this book! I read it cover to cover in one sitting. I love all of the Twilight books and the first is my favorite. With the movies, hype, and overall Twilight craziness, it is easy to forget how beautiful the book is! The graphic novel brought me back to the first time I read Twilight and allowed me to revisit the feelings I felt while reading it. I read the books before any of the movies came out and I pictured the characters a certain way in my mind. Although I do love the movie cast, they don't really look like what I had pictured in my head while reading the books. The graphic novel's characters look so much more like my versions of Edward, Bella and the gang (except Jacob- I didn't like the way he looked in the graphic novel). The cool part is that on the back of the book jacket Stephenie Meyer is quoted as saying, "I've enjoyed working on this new interpretation of Twilight. Young has done an incredible job transforming the words that I have written into beautiful images. The characters and settings are very close to what I was imagining while writing the series."
The artist, Young Kim, is so talented! I thought that her use of color was striking. She only added color a few times in the book, and it was at crucial times (the meadow, to show the amber color of his eyes, when he revealed how he looks in the sunlight, and a few other places). The pictures are meant to tell the story and they do their job! There is just enough dialogue to aid the pictures in telling the story, but not enough to overpower it. This volume ends with the meadow scene and their first kiss, with the continuation of the story to be picked up in volume two. If you are a Twilight fan, I encourage you to add this to your collection. I know many of you may be thinking that this is just ANOTHER piece of Twilight commercialization, but I feel that it is truly a wonderful addition to the Saga.
