Trinity’s Zoo

This is from a while back but it was too cute to not share :). Trinity came to me and asked me for some paper, a pretty frequent request from her, so I handed some over and she disappeared for awhile. She had created her own zoo!

100_3381MUCES – Monkeys

100_3382CHIKS – Chicks       ELUFNS – Elephants

100_3383GRAEFS – Giraffes                          LINS - Lions

100_3384CATS – Cats                    FROGS – Frogs

100_3385FAIRYS – Fairies                                  EElS – Eels

100_3386BAIRS - Bears

100_3387ALUGATRS – Alligators                 MANUT – Manatee

We all toured her cute little zoo and then her and Keenan played with all the stuffed animals she had gathered! Obviously we are in the midst of phonetic spelling, especially for something that she came up with on her own. However don’t fret we are teaching her to spell things correctly when the words are age appropriate. I just love the fact that writing does not intimidate her!! She will write several sentences about a topic and spell some of the words phonetically and others (mostly sight words) correctly. At this stage I’m just glad she is comfortable getting her ideas down on paper :).

Penguin Lapbook

After the seasonal themes that we had studied through the fall, November and December we were looking for something new at the beginning of January. I had a few things in mind but wanted to leave the final decision up to Trinity so I presented the few ideas to her and she chose Penguins!

We talked about what we wanted to know about Penguins and what we already knew and I was on a mission to find a fun way to go about this study. I had heard of lapbooks before and as I looked through my own files and searched the internet I came across them again. After finding a penguin one online for free I decided we would give it a try. This was the result:

As you can see we covered lots of material. Trinity loved it, she couldn’t wait to work on it each day, we even did a few things on the weekends (Hey, if she is that into learning then I’m going with it!!) She can read and recall everything in the lapbook plus some! It was a great way to complete a themed unit and I found it provided great reading and writing lessons as well as the obvious science lessons :).

I did use lots of the stuff I found on the free site but I did add a few things that I already had and modified it for what we desired to learn.

Websites

*This is the site that has the free penguin lapbook: http://www.lapbooklessons.com/PenguinLapbook.html

*This site has free lapbooks on LOTS of different topics: http://www.lapbooklessons.com/index.html

*This site has lots of free lapbooks and a whole section on how to make the mini-books you put inside them: http://www.homeschoolshare.com/

I would highly recommend trying a lapbook, for your homeschool classroom or your school classroom! There are lots of websites with free lapbooks as well as ones you can purchase (I would start with the free ones ;)), add some great books from your local library and some craft supplies (crayons, markers, pencils, brad fasteners, file folders, stapler and GLUE STICKS, lots of GLUE STICKS) and you are set!

Try it out, let me know what you think or if you have any questions.

Bald Eagles of Starved Rock

As you know cabin fever has been getting the better of me! This past weekend we decided to venture out for an outdoor day even though it was far from warm. Although I must say the mid to upper 30’s with a few rays of sunshine were kinda like a heat wave compared to the temperatures we have been experiencing in our neck of the woods. That’s why we looked a little Eskimo-ish :).  100_3287100_3270

Layers, snow boots, snow suits, gloves and hats later we were quite cozy despite the chilly temps!

We decided to go to Starved Rock, where we had camped this past summer, to see the bald eagles that nest there during the very cold winter months. The nest there because the locks and dam keep the water from freezing allowing them to fish. It was AMAZING to say the least there were at least 25-30 (Gabe’s estimate, not mine, I stink at estimating things :)). We saw them sitting in trees, flying, fishing, sitting on logs in the water and eating! We saw one huge nest (they are approximately 6 feet deep and 6 feet wide!) in a tree on the other shore. Now that I have explained how awesome they were let me just say that the pictures are not quite as amazing because I don’t have one of those fancy shmancy, million $$, zoom in from 3 miles away cameras! But I still wanted pictures to remember our day so I took them with my little ole point and shoot :). That being said here they are: 100_3273This is the first one we saw, he was soaring and flying and swooping when we first got to the overlook and then he landed in a tree. We quickly got the binoculars out and realized that he was eating a fish! Trinity thought that was the coolest thing ever! 100_3275

There are at least 15 in this picture sitting in the trees. Some of them were young and did not have their white feathers yet so they are just dark spots but you can count some of them by their white heads.100_3277 There are 3 more in this picture.

100_3286 We also had a lesson on how to use binoculars :). Trinity figured it out quickly and enjoyed them, Keenan….who knows what he saw, but he liked to look through them :).

100_3281 100_3282 I just love these pictures :)!

Our day was not without it’s challenges. Trinity was hungry so she was whining asking about lunch every 2 seconds, we tried to tell her to eat more breakfast :).  And snow boots aren’t really meant for hiking in but that was the most appropriate footwear we had so we went with them. Trinity and I had some some sore tootsies by the end of our little adventure! Gabe has some really nice and heated hiking boots and Keenan was carried most of it so their tootsies were just fine :).

It ended up that Trinity’s whining asking for lunch worked in our favor! We went to the Starved Rock Lodge for lunch and beat the lunch crowd since she was just starving and couldn’t wait a minute longer for food. 100_3295 This was the huge fireplace inside the lodge that we warmed up at before lunch. It was nice and toasty!

We braved the weather, with full bellies :), for a little longer so that we could check out St. Louis Canyon. It was totally worth it!! This is what we saw:100_3303 How awesome is that…100_3306 and that…100_3304 and that?!?!?

It was amazing! The pool that the waterfall pours into was totally frozen so you could walk right up to it, touch it and climb behind it.

It was spectacular!

Our hike back to the car was not a very long one but my little man was determined to do it all by himself (He did except for the stairs at the end)!!

All in all we had a great day, learned some things about bald eagles and binoculars and got out of the house :).  Trinity is working on a Bald Eagles lapbook for school, I hope to post it when we are finished with it!!

Do ya wanna hear a joke??

Trying something new is always a challenge but I was able to figure out the title pages and captions and how to get the video to publish on here!! Now I need to get a better quality video recorder. I just used the one on my digital camera, that is why the video is kinda dark. Please disregard the fact that my daughter is wearing a Halloween shirt in the middle of January!! It was laundry day so the wardrobe choices were slim :).

This was lots of fun I might try another one soon!! Trinity has a project she has been working on for school and pictures just wouldn’t do it justice. Come back next week sometime and I should have it ready!! Thanks for stopping by :)!

Cabin Fever???……No, not me!

The other day while driving I came to a stop sign and turned towards home, but as I was turning it crossed my mind that it had been awhile since I had turned the other way, probably since this summer. Then I wondered where I was going the last time I turned the other way and I realized that we had been going on our only camping trip of the season (you can read about it here, we really did want to go again but it just didn’t work out). Then I started to want to go camping! Kinda random, right?? I mean I had fun and we are looking forward to taking the kids again but this whole “really wanting to go camping in the dead of winter with snow on the ground” thing was kinda strange!

I started to notice other strange thoughts about summer activities; like what will we do with our garden this year, planting flowers on Mother’s Day (that is my gift from the kids, we go and pick out flowers and then plant them and that is my Mother’s Day gift, I love it!!) and riding our bikes to the ice cream shop in town (although I really need to start working out if I’m gonna be in shape for this one ;)).

So one night I ran all this past Gabe and he did indeed confirm that I have “Cabin Fever”. It was kinda startling, I don’t ever remember having it like this. Sure there have been times in the past that I had gotten sick of winter and wanted spring to come but that was much closer to spring than January! So I don’t really know what to do with myself?!?! I have been feeling pretty unmotivated really and I must get over this ‘cause lets face it I just don’t have the time to be unmotivated! So what do you do about “Cabin Fever”? I might have to give some of your suggestions a try  ‘cause summer, heck even spring, is pretty far off right now!!
