This has been a kind of surreal week--I've spent most of the week with the baby while the kids have been gone and Dan has been teaching. There's not really much to say about that, at least, not without boring our few faithful readers!
However, Oliver is worth every minute of it. (That thing in his nose is a feeding tube. He gets to wear it until he gets the breastfeeding thing down. He's almost there.)

Checking In
I don't have much to write about this week--we've been busy taking care of the baby and the older kids took off for another visit to grandma a few days ago. I'm sure they'll have plenty to say when they get back.
In the meantime, I'm grateful for:
rain (we've desperately needed it)
supportive friends and family (so many people have offered to help us)
my husband, who still loves me even when I'm crazy on postpartum hormones
my kids, who bring me great joy
a baby who's starting to figure out this whole nursing thing. Each child I've had, I've been amazed at how this tiny bundle of cells can make me feel such intense protectiveness.
Things have been rough recently--but we have also been richly blessed.

Summer festivities
The Fourth of July is always a big deal for Dan's family. It's not so much about the patriotism, although I'm sure that's there, as it is the holiday itself. Sarah, in particular, loves it. I'm not sure if it's the fabulous color combinations, the food, the parade, or tradition (or all of the above), but it gets a lot of attention around here.
It helps that all of Dan's immediate family was in town to celebrate. On Wednesday, we started bright and early with a pancake breakfast at a local church. Actually, it was just our family, Bubby and Sarah--Poppy pooh-poohed the idea; Sarah's kids were still asleep; and Matt and Laurie didn't get in until the wee hours of the morning. The breakfast itself was just okay, but the money went to a good cause (a local scout troup).
Then, of course, we had the parade. Thanks to some mistaken information, we (actually Dan and the kids) got to the parade route a whole half hour early and were able to claim some decent real estate. The kids, as usual, came away from the parade with too much candy and I got annoyed by the neighboring kids who kept drifting in front of us, but aside from that I think everyone was satisfied. We followed the parade with the typical drinks, french fries and ice cream at "The Cow" (not the real name, but so called for the giant cow on top of the building).
The next several days seemed to be mostly about hanging out, playing cards, and the food. Wednesday we had Cuban sandwiches; Thursday Dan made smoked pork on the grill; and Friday Aaron made paella. (After nearly 9 years of marriage, I've learned that any Eves gathering will involve good food.)
In other news, baby Oliver continues to do well. He's finally passed his birth weight. And someday, when we get decent pictures, we'll post some.

We made it through another week!
Some weeks feel like they're a lot about survival. This was one of those weeks (partly, if I can be frank, because I'm still working through the hormonal aftermath of having a baby!).
My mom took the kids with her to spend another week with their cousins. They saw Brave, went swimming, played with Sarah's kids and Jeni's kids, and generally enjoyed being spoiled.
Judging by her conversation, Evelyn is currently obsessed with her birthday (which won't happen for another 10.5 months) and anything Aladdin related. I'm not sure why she's decided this is now her favorite movie (and therefore Jasmine her favorite princess), but so it is.
Andrew's currently obsessed by Skylanders, which I was only just barely aware existed. Apparently, we have his cousins to thank for this one! And his dad's iPad--when he can get it. He told us he wanted an iPod for Christmas and we laughed at him. But at least he's enjoying himself.
Dan and I spent the week visiting Oliver, who's still in the hospital. But he's almost back up to his birthweight, he lost his umbilical cord a few days ago, and he had his first bath last night. He blinked bemusedly at me and the nurse, his little forehead wrinkling up so he looked like the world's smallest old man. But he didn't cry, which is a plus.
This week, we're looking forward to lots of cousin time and the 4th of July holiday. We're not looking forward to Dan teaching summer school, but someone has to pay the bills!
