FINALLY!

So finally everything is done, and it turned out great, even if we say so ourselves :D It was fun getting things right trial after trial, it made the whole experience more rewarding.

A bit of wrapping up for the whole project. Our theme was "SEX, DRUGS & ROCK N ROLL". And to embody up this theme, we thought that we could incorporate elements from Woodstock concerts. So we used the elements from Woodstock posters, and the iconic text "3 days of peace and music", and other graphic references to Woodstock.

Basically the design is split into two parts, one consisting of typography and the other consisting of graphics. The idea was to seamlessly link these two things and create a pattern from this. Different styles were experimented for the graphics portion, and we chose something that complemented the typography instead of overbearing it.

The initial designs and sketches done were made in a way that everthing appeared clean and crisp, at the same time gave the vibe of retro. We're glad the silk screening produced the same outcome, with minimum amount of unexpected surprises.

We had our share of problems though, having to compromise colour wise. Although ultimately it came out quite pleasing. After exploring different color themes, a duo tone scheme was favored as it complemented the design instead of cluttering it.

All in all it was a great experience, experimenting with a totally new medium, it was a grueling ,but fun project. ^^

Silkscreening mania!

So finally we decided on a colour theme, the green and yellow duo-tone one, as it appeared more retro compared to the ones with more colour, and it gave a washed out look at the same time.

This was what we were going for. Although we had to make slight compromises colourwise
- We couldn't get a close enough yellow colour for the paper
- We had to buy a couple of shades of greens to get a satisfactory shade of green

Eventually we settled for a less yellowish paper, with a complimenting green, and it turned out well in the end.

Our First Batch!

For the first couple of tries we had to hold our breaths and see if it came out how we wanted it to. And it did! After a couple of trials, we got the hang of it.

Azu dedicatedly cleaning the screen

The cleaning process was tiring, coz we had to wipe and clean the screen evertime, if not the results were not very satisfactory.

Steady now!

Fancy close ups

To our horror we almost made a fatal mistake, but luckily we corrected with some overlapping of paper since we had some extra repetitions to spare

SPOT THE BOOBOO!!

Yeah! We messed up the alternating designs! I guess it gets kinda tiring after hours of doing the same thing over and over! good thing we managed to cover it up

Tiling

And finally we're done!!

You tend to go cuckoo after 12 hours of silk screening

Finally we're done doing the wallpaper, it was a learning experience, experimenting with a totally new medium. Stay tuned, we're gonna upload some more pictures after displaying it at the 'gallery'. :D

More progress and Silkscreening horror

More progress on the sketches

We probably will go for one of the duotone ones. We actually tried executing these ideas in class this week, and let me tell you this, no amount of watching silkscreen videos tutorials will prepare you for the actual thing, unless you try it couple of times and get the timing, the chemical proportions and the exposure times correct.

Since we get another week till execution, we're trying out incorporating more stuff as well.

Developing on the idea

Since the Typo design we chose might not hold strong on its own, we decided that it might be good to create an alternating design or pattern for the wallpaper. So that meant, a typo design and a graphic one as well. The graphic portion is to be created to encompass the theme with the three elements sex drugs and rock and roll.

Here is my sketch done in Photoshop

The elements in the graphic portion of the design is based on the three elements in the theme. The bird sitting on the neck of the guitar is part of an authentic woodstock poster.

More stuff from Azu

We are trying to incorporate key elements in both designs to form one that would flow better as a wallpaper pattern

Progress

We have made some progress on our initial idea of "sex drugs and rock n roll". The whole idea is to encompass the elements for these three things, in a nutshell what WOODSTOCK was all about! :D
Here is Azu's take on the theme.

Two typographic ideas based on the theme

Although we realize that using this sort of design would be a bit difficult to incorporate into a wallpaper design. But nevertheless, after consulting with Li Wen, we decided to go with the first piece with the stringy text.

Inspiration

After doing more research, we decided that it might be good to look into what kind of designs usually go into retro silkscreening, or retro wallpapers and even retro textiles, for coming up with a practical and trouble free design for our silkscreen wallpaper.

Upon looking into it, we came across some inspirational work from artists ranging from the designers from the actual era of 60s-80s but also modern designers who encompasses the whole retro concept in their designs.

Then came the styles

After giving much thought to the selected theme, "Sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll", we decided that its important to come up with a style to portray the message.

So after much discussion, we decided not to go for something too cliche, but to go for something a bit more subtle but retro at the same time. We spent some time doing research, and here are some of the works that interested us, whether it could be applied to our designs at this time or not, is not decided yet.

We came across the inspiring works of designer/artist and musician Scott Hanson. His work was something we were looking for in a style that could be applied to our wallpaper design. Scott Hanson is an internationally acclaimed designer, with an amazing client list, he has also produced visuals for the Barack Obama campaign. Below are some of his works.

Another designer that caught our eye was Jeff Canham. Also with a very impressive client list, his work is simple yet effective.
