Twas the night before ‘08, when all through the House
Congress used taxes like a blood-sucking louse.
The stocks were inflated and debts were not square,
Yet still we lay sleeping, not fully aware.
The children attempted to sleep in their beds,
With nightmares of paying welfare in their heads.
For when they get older, almost ready to snap,
Social Security’ll be gone, taken by their Pap.
Then from the House, there arose such a clatter,
A Representative from Texas made Washington shatter!
“Abolish the income tax; call home the troops!
Stop dollar inflation, and lobbyist groups!”
I looked for the source raising all the commotion,
For no ordinary politician would make such a motion!
Then, when I spotted him, he gave me a wink,
The only 72 year old who could make me turn pink.
With a humble appearance, not too slick or too tall,
I knew in a moment it must be Mr. Paul.
It was easy to see from the look in his eyes,
This is one guy who won’t flip-flop or tell lies.
He exclaimed with a manner that was hopeful and hearty,
“Return to the values of the Republican Party!
Let’s heed the advice given by George Washington,
‘Trade with all, entangling alliances with none!’”
His platform for election was simple common sense,
Not invading countries helps national defense.
For, if we were in their place, we’d never like
Being occupied by such an oppressive reich!
And why, back at home, should we give up our rights?
Liberty is for all! (Yes, even non-whites.)
And when we take time to examine the facts,
There’s really no need for so much costly tax.
Free markets make prosperous people, I’ve heard,
Just compare first-world countries with those that are third.
Why should we trust DC with our dough,
If their bad spending habits we already know?
If global warming is of your concern,
Then private property rights is what we must earn.
For capitalism is the key to success,
If we’ll clean up the subsidized, government mess.
There’s sure to be problems and all sorts of strife,
When the government tries to get involved with your life.
Follow the constitution, lessen federal power,
Give it back to the people; it’s America’s hour!
Soon he had to go, after sharing his views,
Though I knew he wouldn’t be on the night’s news.
The media believe he’s just way overblown,
They’d rather their own candidate gets the throne.
He left in his blimp, spreading Election Day cheer,
Standing by principles we all hold so dear.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit to be happy,
It’s about time things changed, but we must make it snappy!
If this guy gets elected, he’ll make things right,
I thought to myself as he sailed off that night,
Then I heard him exclaim, “Happy ’08 to all!
If you’re an American, you’ll vote Ron Paul!"
