Bio Seal

The Bio seal was developed for creating a sustainable solution in the hospitality industry. Living day to day life we are all aware of the damages caused to our environments from the foods we eat to the things we buy, we know driving cars are bad for the environment but yet we still drive on a daily basis. Awareness is a word in which some people might want to avoid because they are aware of what they are doing is bad but yet they still do it. Change is needed in the way some things are done and sorting the task as simple as sorting out our waste is one of them.

The potential for green bio energy is astonishing with the findings carried out for this project. Are you aware that 24% of all food that you purchase is thrown out into the rubbish bin? Have you also ever thought of what happens to this organic matter when it reaches the rubbish tip?

Technology has now allowed us to have waste sorted automatically at waste sorting facilities such as the UR-3R located at eastern creek. In saying this, does it mean we can throw all our waste into one local bin and expect it to end up in the right place? Well personally i dont think so at all. After investigating the service system currently in place in Sydney it is not the most efficient system producing a sustainable outcome.

The bio seal is a solution for the future, with the selected trial target to be the within the hospitality industry, in the research i have found that up to 80% of if's waste is organic waste. Organic waste is processed in a bio reactor can product 1kg of bio gas per 1kg of organic waste, this is generated from the composition of the waste into gases in a aerobic reactor.

Bio seal is a portable hand held device which is used to close and seal bags which are filled with organic waste, the bio seal will be supplied to businesses such as restaurants and catering houses creating a incentive of reduced electricity bills for the sorted waste. Bio degradable plc bags and labels will also be provided to the businesses with the device. The device will be professionally installed and mounted on the wall as it will require electricity to power the PCB which will feed information to a LCD screen and printer.

Creating a product that did not require training prior to use was essential, the supplied bio degradable bags were design around existing 60lt bins currently in the majority of the businesses. The basic easy to read back lit lcd display also only displays what is important to the user in creating awareness to the amount of organic waste is generated. Once the organic matter is sealed, each bag will have a label with a unique barcode printed on it to identify the business for the incentive or disincentive, bags which have more then 10% of contaminated non organic waste will incur in a written warning to the business.

The form of the bio seal was inspired from a number of objects, a rugged look and feel was needed for the device due to the nature and environment it was going to be handled in. The injection moulded abs body also needed a form which would not deter users from using the product. The neck of the device and the top portion was based on the sweeping motion, this also acts as a visual clue to how the product is used. Sutle tactile clues on the grip were also incorporated to create a neutral wrist position for when in use.

Was just browsing the net and i came across this.

"The MotoCzysz E1pc. It’s difficult to pronounce. It’s the world’s most advanced electric bike. It’s capable of speeds up to 140 mph. It packs 10 times the battery capacity of a Toyota Prius in its sleek, two-wheeled body. It just took on and won one of the world’s toughest, most dangerous races– the Isle of Man TT (electric bike race) today–with a time of 23 minutes 22.89, hitting speeds up to 135 mph. It narrowly missed out on a 10,000-euro prize for becoming the first electric bike to average 100 mph on the race course (averaged 98.973 mph). And you can get a taste of what it’s capable of in the video below." (http://motorcrave.com/worlds-most-advanced-electric-bike-wins-isle-of-man-tt-zero-with-video/8161/)

The story of Cap and Trade

The concept is easy, it happens around the world. From the east to west it happens all the time, the world and its authorities revolves around money which makes all the calls. Simple as this sounds, we can relate to this on a daily basis everyone wants to do things easier and have things more simpler while expecting everything to get better and better, knowing that what we have done most probably has a negative effect on our environment or our pockets. This i feel is just like the carbon trading scheme, you’re trying to place a bandaid over a problem and not solving it.

Governments know what the soul cause of the problems is, it’s not hard to understand that more carbon emissions create more pollution. Although the carbon trade scheme is meant to decrease the amount of carbon generated, as long as there is money floating around none of their solutions will work. Annie explains the cap and trade scheme very well in the video, but at the end of the day we have to ask ourselves will this make a change?

Maslow hierarchy of needs is a model in which we can all relate to except money is not on the top of the list. Although money can fulfil our needs, the world worries about money more then they worry about the environment. People are willing to get wealthier but the day and that is how things work.

Paying back ecological debt is a good concept but put it into practical use, how much people will actually be willing to donate. Being and industrial design student i believe there is technology out there that can help resolve parts of the carbon issue which surrounds us, the real issue is who is willing to invest the money in solving this problem?

The real issue i think lies in the lack of knowledge the world knows or cares about carbon emissions, Annie explains the third step as being distraction in the cap and trade scheme. I think this has worked really well in avoiding the people are really affected know the truth about what really goes on.
