Moth

Lyla and I went to the gym today.   We had a good workout and on the way home Lyla was talking.  She said all serious "I need to tell you this!"  and then suddenly stopped talking.  Then she said "that moth just flew in my mouth"   Then she scooped him up off the dashboard and then tried to throw him out of the car.   He didn't want to go and flew back in.   She tried again and then told him to go.  Then continued on with her story.

Haha    As I type this, I actually just laughed out loud.

On Wednesday ...

Ryan and I were talking on the phone in the morning.  We were talking about his rent payments.  We were talking about the day.  Just having a pleasant conversation.   It was early.  He was going to go to school, I was going to work.   We discussed that he might go to the Charlie Kirk speaking event to just hear what all the hype is about.   At the end of the conversation, he said I think I will just go.   We hung up to go do our things.   It was just another day.. or so we thought.

at 11:33a.m.  my phone rang and on the other side was a panicked Ryan.  He said "Charlie Kirk got shot, we are running, there was only one shot.   We are running.   I am okay, I am okay"   Then he said it again.  "We are okay.  We are running off campus, Charlie Kirk got shot"   I kept him on the phone and I could hear on the line the panic of the people behind him.  They were almost to his apartment and they were going to lock the door and stay there.  I immediately looked online and there was nothing posted yet.   As we talked for a few minutes, more and more things were posted online that he was shot in the neck from a person on the top of a building 200 yards away.  Campus was being evacuated.   There was only one shot.  More and more posts start coming out.  Videos of the shooting, videos of the kids running.  So many cameras were present.  So much detail.  Poor kids.  Poor Ryan.

Throughout the day and hours following, phone calls, texts.  Making sure Ryan was okay.  Ryan had to go to work at 2:30p.  He hung out at his apartment for a while and then decided to go to work.  I talked to him on the way.  He was doing ok, just was a little shocked about what just happened.

I kept looking online and Charlie Kirk was pronounced dead at the hospital, but he died suddenly after the shot.  The killer was not found immediately after, but the weapon was found in a nearby field.

Ryan called me after work and made it safe back to his apartment.  He said that there was so much police presence in the area.  His apartment is next to campus so everything was blocked off.   He went to grandma's house on Thursday to be away from it all.

This morning, a 22 year old man was found as the shooter.  His dad turned him in.   There is no motive, yet, but this event will forever change Ryan.   We will continue to talk about it because he was there, but it will eventually become less and less for everyone else, but those poor kids who were there.  The poor kids on the front row.  No one deserves this.   No matter who they are.

Middle Name

The other night Lyla was filling out some documents for her to ref volleyball at the Boys and Girls Club.  She was talking out loud.   The form asked her to fill in her middle name.  She out loud said ANG-E-L-A and then told Alysa that is how she remembers how to spell it.   ANG-E-L-A.    haha.  I guess you have to do what you have to.

And she loved her Starbucks cup to say this the other day!

Math or not?

I was attempting to help Lyla the other day with her math.  She said that she was doing decimals and had to use the base 10 model to figure out the answer.  I told her I didn't even know what the base 10 model was so I didn't know how to help her.  She went to check if Max could help her.  Nope, he was asleep.   She went to check if Ryan could help her.  Nope, he was in class.   She came back and said she wasn't sure what to do.  I told her to look it up.  She said "Max is asleep, Ryan is in class and you are of no use to me".

Alrighty then.  This isn't a lie.  I wasn't any use to her at the moment.  She didn't have to put it so bluntly, but it was funny.

Meatball sub

Ryan makes a perfect meatball sub everyday for lunch.  He arranges the cheese and meatballs just so on the bread and broils the cheese.   He always makes me 3-4 meatballs that are cooked to perfection and put in a small bowl.  He delivers them to me at the table while I am working while the rest of his sandwich is cooking.   He is so cute.  I love to watch him make it and the way he just stares at it is just so cute.   He is so tall and working on his figure.  He has had a tough time with weight and we have been working on eating less and a little more healthy and exercising.  He has been doing so well.  I am very proud of him for all he is accomplishing.  He had all A's this last semester and is one of the only kids that leaves his camera on during the Zoom class.   Thank you for delivering me meatballs to the table when you make your sandwich.    I don't think you will ever know how much I love it.    That bowl with meatballs in it gets me every time :).

Birthday and a job.

Max turned 17 last week.   I really can't believe it - it really seems like yesterday that we were having eye surgery and dealing with a broken arm.   How are we already to being 17?!   He says that he has one more year and then he can go camping with his friends.   I didn't know this is all that is going to happen when he turns 18.

He applied to work and Chick-fil-a on Tuesday at about 12:00p.  Within about an hour, they called him and had him coming in for an interview two days later on his birthday at 9:30a.   We opened presents, he forgot to get on his class on Zoom because he was nervous.   We laughed.    He couldn't remember if it was 9:00a or 9:30a.  He told me 9:30, but then put it on the calendar for 9:00a.  He wore a sweater and jeans and headed over to be there at about 9:10a.   He looked so cute and so old, but was just doing it.  It made me a little teary eyed thinking of him going to the interview where he was so nervous.   He texted me at about 10:00a and said Geez, that was fast and texted me a picture of the job offer which was in the email.   He will be a part-time team member and will make $14.00 per hour.   This is crazy!   My movie theater job I made $4.65.  He said that he didn't even have time to get in his car and pull out of the parking lot before they offered him the job.   Ha!  He did it!   He got a job.   He had to fill out some papers, accept the offer and go there for a uniform fitting.   Hooray.    We filled out the papers when he got home after he had about 4 texts from them asking him to fill it out.   Ha again!    He went today for the uniform and they didn't have the pants that he needed.  They had to order them.  He got 2 masks, a shirt, a belt and a sweatshirt.  He said he got the goods!    He was excited that they showed him how to use the 3 apps that they use for the schedule, training and communication between the staff.   He will return the other documents to them this week when he gets his pants and then he will start training.   I am so excited for him.   He will love it.   He will meet new people and get an understanding of working.   Since COVID is happening still and he doesn't go to actual school until March 22 and even then only has 2 classes at the high school, he is getting bored and needs something to own and do.    Since he is a minor, he needed a minor work permit and I was happy to sign it.   I asked him today how he felt about all of this and he said it all happened so fast that he didn't get time to do anything different.  He kinda feels that I forced him to do it even though he applied himself.  I don't think he thought he would get the job and it would be delayed.  (I may have written the cover letter to go with the application and sent it to him to turn in, but that is it).   I believe that the universe is pushing him into something amazing.  This is just the beginning little friend.  You got this.

I gave her my shirt

Yep.   That's right.   I took off my shirt and gave it to Lyla to wear.   in the car.  right after dinner.

It was Max's birthday on Thursday and we were headed to get some dinner before dance.  Lyla had a bloody nose and got some on her shirt.   Max told her it looked like hearts and it would be fine.  She was very sick about going to dance with this shirt.   We didn't quite have enough time to go home and get another shirt.  So, yep.  I took mine off, zipped up my coat and handed my shirt back to her in the car.   The boys thought this was a little weird.  I told them you do what you have to.   We ate dinner and then went into dance.  She looked at her shirt and looked and me and gave me a little wink.   That little wink was worth my freezing coat touching my bare skin.   She said that no one knew that it was my shirt and she certainly wasn't going to say anything.    ha :).

The crazy thing is that she is big enough to wear my shirt.   The other crazy thing is that I am willing to just take off my shirt and give it to her.
