Ryan and I were talking on the phone in the morning. We were talking about his rent payments. We were talking about the day. Just having a pleasant conversation. It was early. He was going to go to school, I was going to work. We discussed that he might go to the Charlie Kirk speaking event to just hear what all the hype is about. At the end of the conversation, he said I think I will just go. We hung up to go do our things. It was just another day.. or so we thought.
at 11:33a.m. my phone rang and on the other side was a panicked Ryan. He said "Charlie Kirk got shot, we are running, there was only one shot. We are running. I am okay, I am okay" Then he said it again. "We are okay. We are running off campus, Charlie Kirk got shot" I kept him on the phone and I could hear on the line the panic of the people behind him. They were almost to his apartment and they were going to lock the door and stay there. I immediately looked online and there was nothing posted yet. As we talked for a few minutes, more and more things were posted online that he was shot in the neck from a person on the top of a building 200 yards away. Campus was being evacuated. There was only one shot. More and more posts start coming out. Videos of the shooting, videos of the kids running. So many cameras were present. So much detail. Poor kids. Poor Ryan.
Throughout the day and hours following, phone calls, texts. Making sure Ryan was okay. Ryan had to go to work at 2:30p. He hung out at his apartment for a while and then decided to go to work. I talked to him on the way. He was doing ok, just was a little shocked about what just happened.
I kept looking online and Charlie Kirk was pronounced dead at the hospital, but he died suddenly after the shot. The killer was not found immediately after, but the weapon was found in a nearby field.
Ryan called me after work and made it safe back to his apartment. He said that there was so much police presence in the area. His apartment is next to campus so everything was blocked off. He went to grandma's house on Thursday to be away from it all.
This morning, a 22 year old man was found as the shooter. His dad turned him in. There is no motive, yet, but this event will forever change Ryan. We will continue to talk about it because he was there, but it will eventually become less and less for everyone else, but those poor kids who were there. The poor kids on the front row. No one deserves this. No matter who they are.
