Londy

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love cities. I love the feel of energy, craziness, culture, movement, and excitement in cities. In particular, I love the city of London. I had the opportunity to spend a semester there in college, and found it hard to sit and study when such an incredible city was at my fingertips. London is unlike any city I’ve experienced. I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world quite a bit, and London always stands out as one of my favorite places. I love that London is the biggest “melting pot” on earth; I am pretty sure there are groups of people from every single country in the world living in London. I love that London is a huge city, yet most of the time in feels like you are in a neighborhood. I love the Thames and the beauty that it adds to the London skyline. I love the architecture – I swear every building in London is just amazingly intricate and unlike any other – no two are alike. The museums, the theaters, the parks, the food (any cuisine in the world is a couple steps in a given direction), the people, the style,  the royalty, the bobbys, the transportation (from double deckers, to the tube, to the awesome old school taxis), all of these kind of put London in a realm of its own.

That said, it was so much fun to bring Julie there and show her all of the things I love about London. I think she really liked it too…Maybe we’ll find a way to live over there for a while someday.

Julie got me a really nice SLR camera for my birthday last summer. I think she kind of regretted it on this trip, as I was going to town taking pictures. That said, I have SO many photos. So there will probably be quite a few in the post, but I think you can deal with that.

So here goes. We flew in on a red-eye from Detroit – got to our insanely tiny hotel room in Westminster (near Big Ben), laughed about how small it was, and then went out to see the city.

Detroit – serious excitement on Julie’s face.

Picadilly Circus at about the point I felt I was going to pass out from lack of sleep.

Tesco has the key to happiness in London. Hobnobs and little odd sized cartons of milk. mmm.

Europe September 2010 024

National Gallery of Art. I love that place. It was fun showing Julie my favorite Turner paintings there.

Europe September 2010 026

St. Martin in the Fields – right next to Trafalgar Square. This was all being refurbished while I was there last. It is just amazing that on every corner in London is another beautiful historical church or building.

Europe September 2010 031

That night we went for walk along the Thames in the rain. We got pretty wet but it was worth it when we got to my favorite piece of London architecture – St. Pauls – and dinner at Wagamama.

Europe September 2010 035

Europe September 2010 037

Wagamama is on the left (pretty cool inside the bottom of a bridge) – then i think this pub on the right is like quintessential England.

Europe September 2010 043

We walked across the Millenium Bridge (enter Harry Potter (scene in Harry Potter 6)) over to the front of St. Paul’s.

Europe September 2010 051

One of the main reasons of the trip was this…to see Les Mis. Julie has always wanted to see this and London is the only place it is still running. The performance was really really good – you should have seen the smile on Julie’s face. The next night we saw “Love Never Dies” which is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to Phantom. We had heard that it was supposed to be really good. I would love to know who the critics/reviews of it because holy cow, it was not good. We kept looking at each other just hoping it would get better, but it just kept getting more and more weird. Les Mis was so good though, that we kind of let Love Never Dies slip from our memories.

Europe September 2010 056

We did some shopping around Oxford Circus.

Europe September 2010 058

McDonalds in foreign countries rules. McD’s in London is really nice. You might roll your eyes, but I saw the ad for the “M with Bacon” and had to give it a try.

The mix of old and new.

Europe September 2010 062

We wandered into the Soho part of town to get some Indian Food before Les Mis. London is home or some seriously tasty Indian Food.

This was Julie after she just got back from a trip on the Hogwarts Express. She made it through Platform 9 3/4 and have a good conversation with Harry and Ron while taking a quick spin on the train.

We went to Buckingham Palace and saw the changing of the guard…so did a few other people.

One day we jumped on a train and went out to Windsor Castle. Her Majesty’s favorite place to spend her summers. 700 or so more rooms for her. Such a beautiful place though.  So much history there – it was kind of eerie/awesome to be in the same rooms where Henry VIII and other famous English rulers.

Outside the castle grounds we walked through the town of Windsor. Here is Julie doing quite possibly the most amazing jumping picture of all time. Check out that face and hair.

Europe September 2010 210

Of course there needs to be this driveway into Windsor Castle that goes for as long as you can see. And we talk about exorbitant spending in the US? Ha.

Is Julie pretty or what?

Europe September 2010 223

Look, it’s the Bobbys. Julie was too wussy to ask them to pose for photo with her. Now that one on the right is just looking at her weird.

Europe September 2010 225

Case and point: London is beautiful. This is the tile in the Tube stop by our hotel.

The British Museum. Home of the Rosetta Stone. See if you can find Julie in that photo.

The Tate Modern. This is one of my favorite museums in the world…after this visit, I think it is on Julie’s list too.

Europe September 2010 237

This is one of my new favorite pieces of art. This guy is amazing. I can’t imagine the amount of time it took to do this. There was this one and 4 other huge pieces in the room. I want that for our living room.

Europe September 2010 254

A belt shot from inside St. Paul’s Cathedral. No photos allowed, but I could not help myself. I just this the inside of that church is so incredible. All mosaics – that combined with the light/brightness in there is just so amazing. I could sit in there for days.

After 5 awesome action packed days in London, we took the tube and a bus out to Stansted where we flew out to Italy early the next morning. So stay tuned for Europa Part II – Italia. It might be a few days though because holy cow this post took like 4 hours. London rules.

Europa

We had an absolutely amazing time in Europe. We’ve been back a little more than a week now – it’s been crazy trying to get caught up after being gone – but I am finally getting all the photos on to my computer and getting ready to give you a blogocation (new word I made up where you go on vacation via blog). England was amazing – I love the city of London and it was so fun showing it to Julie. I have been scheming for a long time to live over there some day. This was my chance to show it off to Julie and get her thinking on the same wavelength. She likey. Besides the fact that we were in Harry Potter territory, she was soaking in the amazing city non stop. Next stop was Italy – wow, what a country full of amazing places and history and people that desperately need Old Spice commercials – can you seriously not smell that on yourself, I mean seriously. I am going to start working on the post of the whole trip – hopefully it won’t take too long and I can get it up tonight, if not in the next day or two.

Europe September 2010 114

Julie sat in this booth for hours hoping it was the same one from Harry Potter that takes you down to the Ministry of Magic. Surprisingly, she actually made it down there and had a great meeting with Cornelius Fudge. More to come soon…

possibly the most beautiful spot on earth

I have been suckmaster 5000 at blogging this summer. but it has just been nuts. we bought a condo, we moved out, we moved in, we moved too many boxes, we’ve both been really really busy with work, we went to utah for a couple weeks (well, julie for a week, and me for two), we’ve had some wicked awesome visitors, we sweat a lot in our car with no ac, we finally got the guts to buy a new car (well not “new”, but definitely new to us when we’ve been in the 88 legend), we’ve just been busy. but a good kind of busy…life is really good right now. we are extremely lucky and blessed.

in the midst of all of it, we got to spend some time here at one of my favorite spots on earth.

bear lake, idaho. it was amazing to just have some open space, and see the stars, and spend time with some of the people we love most in the world. All 37 of us.

baby blessing

Noah’s boy Jacobson had his baby blessing which we all got to take part in. Pretty awesome to be there with all these amazing guys.

bloomington

We went to Bloomington Lake and rope swung into the water that was so cold there were ice cubes in it. Missing…photo of rope swing, but it was awesome.

skiing

Got in some great skiing. I wish I could ski more out here. It is one of my favorite things in the world. Nonetheless, I got my fix.

losing tennis

We played a lot of tennis. I beat my Dad. Wahoo!! Improving my all time record to about 6-1849. Not a bad percentage. Not sure why Julie is smiling here, Noah and Kristi captured the trophy from us (we beat them last year in the championship) in the family doubles tournament. It was rigged. That is the only way I can see why they beat us. I think the balls weren’t regulation size or something.

jump on beach

We jumped.

campfire

We campfired and s’mored it up. This one included an awesome bday surprise from Julie.

bday

These guys had an awesome bday party for me when we got back from our work conference. Julie was already back in DC, but it was so fun to be with all these guys.

mfme

Julie joined all the girls had the MFME outing in Park City for a few days. Including some seriously nice food and the alpine slide.

alpine slide

Perhaps the highlight was my bday present from Julie. An absolutely off the hook SLR camera. I have been coveting one for SO long and Julie totally surprised me with it by putting it in a bucket and giving it me at the big family BBQ – somehow she tricked me into thinking that it was some special dessert to cook over the campfire – instead it was the camera I have been googling about daily for the last 4 months. I am really excited. I’ve got a lot to learn/remember about SLRs but hopefully you’ll be seeing some of my work on here soon. The top two photos were compliments of the new camera. More to come soon.

Bear Lake provided some great recharging. It is great to be back in DC, but it was SO fun to be there with the entire family. I have an amazing family – on both sides. We get to see Julie’s parents this week and we are so excited about that as well. Stay tuned.

PS. I mentioned a new car. Well here it is… I just need to find a Flux Capacitor – they are really expensive on ebay though.

Summer yields visitors here in DC and we are loving it. One of my very best friends and his wife came and visited for a few days and we had a blast. Here are a couple of the highlights. It has been so amazing over the past few years to see my best friends get married and see how perfectly their wives fit them. Angela is the perfect balance for all of Parley’s quirks/awesomeness. Of the stuff that we actually photographed (thanks Par),  we had a BBQ on the roof, went to a Nats game complete with Strasburg and fireworks and sweet hats, and wandered around Eastern Market and Georgetown on Saturday. Par and Ang got to experience the Legend in the summer here in DC (not fun as the AC doesn’t work) but they were good sports. Most of all it was just fun to catch up and talk about life.

Memorial Day in NYC. a little late.

K I know this is crazy late. But this is the first night I have had in like the last month and half to go through these pictures. It has been such a fun summer so far. Starting with a good old time in NYC for Memorial Day with Noah and Kristi and their fam. Julie’s brother Bryan and his wife Lis joined us as well and we had a great time. Highlights included the USS Intrepid, the Shark (awesome speedboat that goes out in the harbor and jumps off the waves of the Staten Island Ferry), the Shake Shack, GoGo Curry (best reason to go to NYC), and good talks/walks through the greatest city on earth.

IMG_9798 IMG_9803

Kristi has serious hops. Below:Southstreet Seaport. McKay took this picture. Not bad eh?IMG_9824 IMG_9825

A lot of people wonder what ever happened to Kosmo Kramer. Well… I found him conveniently sitting right in front of his picture. IMG_9833

Amazing flowers in Madison Square park while we were waiting in line for Shake Shack. IMG_9836

This guy had this contraption to blow huge bubbles (like 5 feet long) by Bethesda Fountain in the park. McKay was loving it.IMG_9844 IMG_9851 IMG_9854

I got to stay with Lyla and baby Jacobson while these guys went on the Shark. I had been on it before and they wouldn’t let kids below a certain height ride on it. So I got some good dad practice keeping a 2 year old occupied while they were gone. IMG_9855 IMG_9867

View from below the Brooklyn Bridge from on the Shark (taken by Julie). You don’t see this view very often.  IMG_9870 IMG_9876

The Concorde! At the USS Intrepid museum they have one that you can actually go inside of. So cool. Here’s something interesting… when you are going like Mach 1.5 or whatever, while you are in the cabin, you can’t hear the sound of the plane, because you are going faster than the speed of sound. Man, I want them to put those things back in service. IMG_9877

Stealth Bomber. This picture doesn’t do it justice. It was huge. IMG_9883 IMG_9887

Pretty amazing to be on a huge Aircraft carrier looking over the Manhattan Skyline. Memorial Day weekend to remember.
