Open-Heart Surgery for Dummies was added to the "Dummies" series in 2002 in light of a sudden demand for cheaper heart surgery. The do-it-yourself method was popularised by this book, written by Gerald Carter, a freelance writer with no medical experience whatsoever, although he did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Are you tired of having your loved ones' heart surgery being performed by those pesky experienced surgeons? Who isn't? In this book, we show you how to fix heart valves, repair arteries, and patch up holes- on the cheap!

From Chapter 1 - Preparing:
"Be prepared! That is what heart surgeons would say if they were also Boy Scouts. This rings true in the field of on-your-own heart surgery as well. Always make sure to wash your hands before surgery, and be sure you have all the proper tools: scalpel, thread, duct tape, and kitchen knife.

From Chapter 1.5 - Anaesthesia:
It may be interesting for the patient if he or she remains conscious during the exercise, but most surgeons choose to apply some form of anaesthesia, because they do not like it when the patient criticizes their work. One of the most common methods is to hit the patient very hard on the head with a hammer. Where to hit, how often to hit, it is all covered in this chapter. Alternatives are also covered, involving gagging and tying up the victim patient. When gagging be sure to gag the patient tight enough so that any scream or sound is muffled.

From Chapter 2 - The Heart:
The heart can be sometimes difficult to find, especially if you are operating on mean people. The heart is the red throbby thing right inside the ribcage. Start up, and scan down the body. If you see a long coiling thingy that appears to be digesting things, you've gone too far.

From Chapter 3 - Materials:
Don't have everything you need? Improvise! The ribcage can be opened with a simple tire jack. Most brands of tape can hold together holes. Need a place to put the heart when you're taking a break? The icebox is a great resting spot! Just make sure you don't confuse it with the steaks!

From Chapter 4 - Surgery:
You've made it! Time to shine. Find somebody you know with a heart defect. (Be sure that they're comfortable with the fact that it's very likely that you'll screw up if it's one of your first few dozen 'trial' runs.) The most important thing is to remain calm. The only thing that panicking does is make you realize that it's incredibly stupid to perform heart surgery yourself. Clearly, that is not very productive when you are going to perform it anyway, and may badly influence the outcome of the operation.

From Chapter 5 - Prenatal Heart Surgery:
Many unborn children suffer from heart problems, often stemming from inbreeding or the prenatal kidney surgery you performed on them last week. This chapter will prepare you to deal with delicate immature bones and undeveloped tissues without confusing the hearts of mother and child. Special bonus section: Twins!

From Chapter 10 - Dealing with Fatalities:
Every surgeon has one that, well, doesn't make it. Every completely inexperienced neanderthal has about five a week. You'll need to learn how to cope. Be sure to have a malpractice lawyer on hand. (Can't find one? Just buy Malpractice Defence for Dummies at your local bookstore!)

Criticism:
The book received a heavy amount of negative criticism from the press. A reviewer from the New York Times described it as "the story of horribly poor judgement told from the perspective of a blathering idiot... the pariah of our time." It was later noted that this was supposed to be for the review of Paris Hilton's autobiography. Harold Edwards of the Tucson Register complained, "this book killed my wife! This man needs to be sued!" Carter responded by saying "For more information, please purchase Dealing With Accidentally Killing Your Wife Via Botched Surgery for Dummies."

Arguments in favor
-Various arguments in favor of using the book have been mentioned in the technical literature. A selection of these:

1)People teach themselves Rocket Science, swimming, car racing etc. from books, so why not Open-Heart Surgery?

2)Many surgeons who hold degrees in medical science have passed their exams with some F's, many C's and D's, and perhaps even no A or B grades at all! People learning the contents of this book well, may do better than them.

3)Often, laymen are far more careful than experienced, boasting, "know it all, been there, done that" surgeons.

4)The worst that can happen is, that the patient dies. We all do, sooner or later, and it happens to qualified surgeons, too, that some of their patients die during surgery.

5)In many countries there are long waiting lists for Open-Heart Surgery in clinics. Be smart, do it at home!

6)Use of the book is money-saving. The patient can go on holiday with this money that is saved, which is good for the heart and may result in a speedy recovery!

7)People who do not like reading or who are even illiterate can still use the book as the pictures are self-explanatory and give complete information.

8)There is a braille version of the book, so the blind can use it, too!

Despite being a critical failure, the book was wildly popular and remained on the Amazon.com Bestseller list for two years. It was later determined that a glitch in the website's code caused this and that in fact only 5 copies were sold.

Aftermath

today is family sunday in church..pretty awesome!! games etc theres even the hotdog eating competition, 5 contestant each round the fastest to down 3 hotdogs wins a starbucks voucher .. hehehe involved in handing out the prizes so all of us in charge did what we did best and what is that??? why, dragging poor unsuspecting passerbys to join the competition,shouted encouragement and laughed at them of course!..JUST KIDDING LA... we aint that mean..it was all good fun

alot happened but so lazy to type it all out..hehe typical jasmine

was in charge of the projector today in church 4 service.. 1st time handling it. b4 service while testing it out the poor thing wont on by the command of my remote control. was suppose to test changing the screen from computer to video ( if u dont understand this part its ok, neither do i noe how to explain..NOT tech savvy..all i noe is that thingy or this thingy :P) bottomline is suppose to press a button on the remote control at the projector from the back of the room not go up to it and press it manually like in class.. and you noe how remote controls (esp for projectors) just refuse to work sometimes..arghh ok fine MOST technology hates me mayb that explains it..
jabbing the poor controller with all my might and it wont work...and travis had to show off and did it in a flourish..

a gigantic cockroach quietly crawled up the wall of a whitewashed building. secretly, he planned to invade an empty room in an apartment where two innocent girls were happily residing.

he spied on them grinning to himself, his antenna twitching as they were totally oblivious to him.his blueprint for world domination was now in his tiny..erm..hands. 1st and apartment then the world! he tried his best not to attract attention in the dark room..perfect! his dark brown shell was camoflouging himself well with its surroundings.

time to test the waters..he climbed the cabinet facing the door quickly..he was about to enter his enemies main territories. adrenalin shot through his body, what if they caught him, what if this was his end. he knew he had to be extra careful, he had only one shot at it and hell, he was not gonna waste it after all the leader of the cockroaches had chosen him HIM OF ALL COCKROACHES to carry out the terrorising plan.

his beamed with pride, afterall he was the biggest and strongest of the lot. he was quick and nimble. in all, he was perfect for the job. coupled with the latest technology, he underwent genetic modification making his luminous shell 1000 times harder than an ordinary shell..he had his antenna straightened and lengthen enabling him to be more sensitive to his surrounding..he was unbeatable!he couldnt let them down now, they were all counting on him. he was to change all the animals and humans mindset that cockroaches cannot rule the world! humans have always portrayed anything and everything from monkeys (mojo jojo), weird green fellows(gangreen gang), crabs ( Him), to even a pack of amoebae ( the amoeba boys)in the race to win world domination. what an outrage!dont cockroaches have wad it takes to be even featured in powerpuff girls ?the best show on earth? ahem

his thoughts quickly vanished as he heard stirring in the living room. he stayed very still..counting under his breath..1....2....3..

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh

the horrors! girl number 1 has spotted him and sounded the alarm (eg a blood curdling scream) immediately girl number 2 rushed over to where she was rooted and responded the same way as the previous girl..

how could he have been so careless to let his thoughts ruin his concentration?? his cover was now blown all he could do now was run

and he did at super sonic high speed raced around the room emitting 'tic-tic-tic' sounds across the polished floor. adrenalin shot through his body..it was not over yet

he heard a loud spraying noise... RIDSECT?

" did the girls think they can kill me with ridsect?" he thought and he added to his thoughts
"im immune to all insecticides and pesticides, ild show them'

and he taunted the girls by purposely running in front of them while subjected to white clouds of ridsect coming from the blue can. he laughed his head off, i mean, almost.

it was time to show the girls a taste of terror..he spreaded his wings and flew buzzingly at the girls..enjoying the fear he instilled in them..they screamed louder and shriek-ier..he finally landed on the wall and let out another maniacally villian-esque laugh.. too bad human ears could not detect it ..however, he was not so lucky, the screams of the girls were within his hearing range...it was too much for him, the screams were taking a toll on his head..adrenalin and screams were not a good match , his head was pounding and he was feeling dizzy.. he dropped to the floor

but NO! he was not going to go without a fight.. so screaming was their weapon, he had to take cover..he ran into the darkness of the empty room he came from.. at least the screaming ceased!
bright light flooded the room. nooooooooooooooooooo

the girls switched on the overhead lamp in the room.! he could only perform his optimum in darkness! how is he going to survive this challenge?

he blindly raced out of the room..he couldnt adjust his eyes to the brightness..yet

more screams..will the girls just cut it out? he's brain was already infused with dunno-how-many decibels screams and the light was obstructing his eyesight! cant they have any compassion on him? his bravery took a plunge

he scuttled about not knowing where to go he was lost! he started seeing doubles of everything..was it all in his mind? was he really seeing them?

he heard a swoosh of air above him. he looked up to see a dark square coming at him and he knew this was..his end

phoebe and jasmine stared at the thick newpaper, the latter had just let down on the uglyyy cockroach inches away from her feet ..

the war was over..

Dedication to Jasmine
back to my blog again..just wanted to dedicate this entry to Jasmine cause she's a beloved friend whom i didn't get the chance to say happy birthday to PLUS i didn't get to send her off to KL which is another tragedy...


Well Jasmine is one heck of a girl...met her in like form one..still remember getting to arrange our tables parliment style(mrs.chan bah)then i happened to sit next to her...we were both sorta shy to chat at first but then for some funny reason we got to the topic on where we were living at and coincidentally,jasmine lived practically 100-150 metres behind my house...since then on,that physical connection between houses linked us both and we became friends!!muahahahaha....we sorta went to each other's house and i always received a joyful heart-warming welcome from her parents which are such optimistic and cool people...i love her mum's backyard!!!the fountain,the eden like look,the ginger flowers hanging above the small miniature lake,trees,shells in the patio...ah...so relaxing...still remember jas?when we'd sit out there and talk about life,relationships,school and duh...gossip...=)...sally was there too!!!hehehe..

Over the past 5 years,jasmine has become an invaluable friend to me...she's always so bubbly(but when she's made u do NOT wanna mess with her),she's always so sweet,she's tough in her own way-(jas and I always utilise our forceful ways to make margaret eat and not over indulge herself in coffee..hehehehe)she constantly shows genuine concern for her friends,she's intelligent, artistic, outgoing,such a heartbreaker too(she's beautiful and such a boy magnet....can't blame her ba..she was born sizzling hot!)...hehehehe...i can never thank her enough for all the times she had helped me through tough times and put up with my unbearably thunderous sounding voice and fanatical ways...collaborating with sally,both of them have always kept my spirits up when things seem impossible and have supported me in all my endeavours...i definitely know what a true friend is like...

i just wanna tell you,jas,that i'm forever grateful and i hope that we'll remain friends throughout this lifetime...i'll never forget the times that we've helped each other and lent our shoulders to each other...hahaha..my palm can be ur punching bag anytime..."we must cherish the love we have,we must cherish the life we live...cherish the love..cherish the love..cherish the love..."well...jus replace 'love' with 'friendship' K?heheh..it's lyrics from a song..hehehe...

My only regret is that we didn't spend more time with each other...well time is never fair when it comes to good times...

hehehe...remember at tuition ,we use to laugh ourselves silly with ivan,tian,cel,lun,kim,jeremiah and tania?hehehhe...miss those times when we could still be as one class to talk and to laugh till our sides hurt...hahah..can still remember lun going "What the hell???" while lifting his hands up with the shocking look on his face...hehehe...

the other day the lion dance troup came..apparently i sponsored them to come and dance in taylors hahah coz all of them were wearing this red shirt and the back of it have a flower with the word JASMINE, the jasmine rice brand la

i heard the drumming but i was in the library at the time( break ma) emailing and listening to music on headphones so i didnt bother going out. but the lions missed me (jklah) so they decided to come find me in the library) both the yellow and white lion came ..they danced all around the library for like 20 mins i think..didnt really bother la occasionally glancing up to see wad the lions were doing then suddenly i noticed the yellow wan was missing..

i mean i kept seeing the white one so didnt thought much of it carry on doing my own thing then suddenly i felt hot i glanced to my left and saw smth yellow and by REFLEX i screamed (aiyo so embarassing) , the lion was eating my headdd....(cry) y attack me wannn.. then they went out

we missed 30 mins of bio watching the lion dance on the ground floor :)..they jumped on stilts thingy quite cool la..dangerous ah..in the end they had to get their ang pow i mean thts wad they were here 4 rite..but cannot reach heheh so funny so they had switch sum1 to another person taller hahhaha

ok ok i will not apologize for not blogging because its my blog la DUH hahaha

hmm i arrived safe and sound ( obviously ) everythings great and running smoothly..which prompted SOME people to exclaim " I TOLD YOU IT'LL B FINE, YOU WORRIED YOURSELF FOR NOTHING" which is quite true.. i am prone of doing that...perhaps its a good thing i was flown to kl in such short notice to keep me from extended worrying which would definately result in possible brain trauma in the nxt 10 yrs.. ok im blabbering but who cares YOU'RE THE ONE READING THIS..haha ok i shud stop being mean

lan is pretty cool ( in a way) we split up into groups of ten ( or 12 in my group) and we have to put up a drama , actually a few dramas in a semester on malaysian stuff..i missed doing the 1st one which was on the 5 bad mannerisms of malaysians but got to watch them when i came into class last monday..so our new drama is on colonisation on malaysia or smth like that so instead of putting it up on stage our group decided to film it instead..i got to b the carema(wo)man/narrator...pretty AWESOME! hahaha it was soooo funny filming them doing the scenes..aLOT of cut scenes coz of laughter but i managed to keep a steady hand on the camcorder altho i was trying hard not to burst out in fits of laughter while filming...yay we finished it today and are to present it on friday.. apart from filming for lan the rest of lan is well..u noe ________________ fill in the blanks yourself

i can go on abt a few more other things but im so lazy!

people are pretty friendly here i made friends on the 1st day of sch!! even tho i was late..oh yeah i forgot to mention a big THANKS to those who sent me off in the airport..very very nice of you guys :) didnt know that so many people were going to turn up.. c u guys when i get back on the 17th yea, those going to b in kch that is..

i go to the ACTS church here.. quite like mine back home but with less people.. :) nice the people are super nice and friendly..( the 'super' phrase is back)

hmm... wad can i say bout jas. first thing? she's short! jk jk. k lah. memang short. physically. but usually she stands taller than others. but let this be a reminder, never kacau her bout height. i keana jab n punched coz of my jokes and my attempt at intimidation thru height. ;P

she has this habit of goin "boosh" n nearly punching u. crazy sadistic girl one her. bleh. but she is really very nice. n trust worthy. wadever secret u tell her sure safe one. n my God, she gives the best advice. n she is too kind one. always forgive. i think thats coz she's also very holy one. last time was.. wad again? err.. assistant assistant leader in church? not typo. every friday go youth one. then saturday go prayer. then sunday go church. crazy scehdule. if for me i long time ago mati. too holy for me.

she is also super paranoid. always worry one. her driving law test ar. she one of those nonstop worry. keep studyin. in d end get how much? 98% bleh.

oh. bet u never knew this. she is actually damn good in tic tac toe. managed to beat me! ive never lost for over ten years. mus be wait until my brain half dead coz of law talk then straight away use big big strat. hmmph.

she absolutely loves spongebob. n cartoons. hahaha. memang childish. n if u look at her, u think she is type that likes soft soft songs, love songs. turns out she likes fast n upbeat songs. actually likes promiscuous girl n believe me (fort minor). looks r deceiving.

apart from that, she is damn tough one. she goes thru a lot yet u can always c her smiling. u have to admire her for that. u will rarely c her cry in public. no matter how bad it is. haha

oh. n she has this thing of always calling herself ugly. is this a common thing with girls? calling themselves ugly although they are beautiful enough to win miss universe( i noe im biased. but im biased based on facts) look at the pics lar. jas actually very pretty yet always say she look weird. *sticks out tongue. next time u say that i give u nudgie!

she also like to take photos. last few days i lazy take photos jus pass my cam to her. give her free reign. total photos from 3 days? over 500! haha. not bad photographer also. but cant challenge me. me king of candid. haha. finally she get her own cam. of all colors? pink. hehe. memang lah. this girl obesessed with pink. last time we talkin crap bout how im gonna conquer the world( wait for it. i will eventually do it). she say wanna steal it from me then make it all pink. garr. the horror. pink n fluffy. my worst nightmare.

ok ok sorry u few readers for the not- so- omnipotent queen has been busy

although STILL shell-shocked( i get over things veryyy slowly) i am updating

ok so on wednesday which was a few days ago, i climbed into the car after school relieved that school was over ..and then my mom dropped the bomb

she told me that my dad had talked to the taylors ppl and they were still receiving students and that i had to fly over the weekend to kl and start college there...immediately on monday

i went into shock because i didnt ever thought about leaving so soon i mean i knew that most likely if i were going to taylors it'll b in july...so hah?? all of the sudden im suppose to drop everything, pack everything and fly..

at least if im going in july i can prepare mentally and emotionally or wadever it is but i guess i felt it was really too fast for me but my parents say its the best to go now then to wait ..i miss 2 weeks class of work in taylors..can catch up?

haih, i do want to go its jsut that its so...sudden..so im feeling suprised, shocked excited and sad all together...wad do u get from that? a wreck

then on thursday i didnt go to school except to take/ return books and my dad told me that im flying on friday. thats today. insteead of saturday, its friday..one day closer..

its not that i dont want to go , i do want to go but leaving everything behind so suddenly takes a punch

i have a phone now :) and a number (duh) i dun even noe wad my number is ahahhaha better check later

oh oh ! guess where im staying!! im staying at phoebe's apartment..remember phoebe kho ??? her mom came over to the pharmacy and suggested i stay over there since the my place apartment can only offer a triple sharing ( quite crowded) so for the nxt 6 months im renting a room over at phoebe's..hmmm i hope she doesnt mind staying with me..hope for the best

oh yea since sch is starting and all that + the stupifff (see its not 'stupid', van..ahaha)connection perhaps ild blog less..my mood for blogging dwindled liao coz conection really is slow naha ctually more pissed abt my msnger..its totally not working since just now!!! *fumes

hehe till nxt time if there is one..oh by then ild b telling u abt my new sch..ironic isnt it..i started about at the junior sch in kindy and now im going back to the junior sch (i know its now called international sch but my 1st instinct when i think about it is junior sch ma..too used to it i guess)after f5..its like a full cycle
