Subway Nutritional Values

info extracted from http://subway.sg/nutrition/index.html

Subway serves healthy meals. The keynote is they serve healthy meals, but not ALL meals are healthy! Lets do some deep diving and check out how "nutrition" their meals are!
Supposed you order Cold Cut Trio meal which comes with 2 cookies ( and you choose 1 oatmeal raisin & 1 Chocolate Chip) and 1 regular Coke. Do some simple maths and you will find that the total calories add up to 905Kcal, with a whopping total fatsof 33g! Thats equally as bad as The Fast Food chain with the M sign, minus the transfats only.
Another shocking fact: If you think tuna is healthy, think again. Tuna Sub (241g serving) contains 29g of fats, 22g of proteins and McDonald's Big Mac (214g serving) contains also 29g Fats but 25g Protein. http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutrition.index1.html
Choosing your dressing is also very important. Choose Chipotle Southwest, and you top up another 10g fats, and mayonaise another 12g. Alternative better choice would be Fat-free Honey Mustard or Sweet onion.
By making the right choice, you can cut down on those fats! Choose those with 6g of fats or less choices. My personal favourite would be subway club with Red Wine and Honey Mustard minus those unecessary cookies, and diet coke (0 Kcal).

Astons Specialties

Queuing for Toto? No its Astons! Its 6.30pm!
Look at the Queue... I Queued for an hour and a half before i managed to get in!
Still Q-ing, and the sun is still up...
6.45pm
Around 7pm, i got the menu! still Q-ing...
The sun has set, and im still Q-ing, close to 7.30pm.
Finally placed my order at 7.55pm!

Before Entry

Prime Ribeye with Pasta Salad and Whipped Potato

Comes along with 2 sides which you can choose. The Ribeye is done medium, so kinda bloody, but that makes the beef so rich in taste and flavour. Each slice is so juicy and tender. I bet the Wagyu will be even much much far better!

Close-up of the ribeye, with fresh blood still oozing out in somem parts of the meat

Grilled Fish with Herbs

Since i had such a filling dim sum lunch today, i still feel quite full even when its time for dinner, so decided to settle for white meat instead, so that i can have a mix of some red and white. The grilled fish portion is generous enough, and the best thing about it is that the interior is soft, while the top layer is slightly charred and crisp, certainly not an easy skill to cook to such standard. The herbs has indeed infused into the center of the white meat, unlike some other grilled fish who claims to have herbs, but the herbs can only be seen, but not tasted.

Victors's Kitchen

Victor's Kitchen! From what i heard, they serve authentic HongKong Dim Sum! No more Dimsum wanna-bes! Variety wise is very limited, almost all the dim sums they sold are already on this blog! Although they lose out in quantity, Quality wise, Victor beats Yum Cha flat. Needless for me to explain how good they are, The pictures below shows all.

Chinese Tea served in non-standardised mugs
Scallop Dips & Chilli Sauce

Milk Custard Bun

First time ate Milk Custard Bun, and 6 out of 8 people of the table loves it. I find if okay thou, fairly good!

4 Custards / 5 Custards

Chee Chiong Fan with Prawn

The Prawn is very BIG and very juicy, the prawn "juice" burst on the first bite. The Chiong Fan Skin veryvery smooth that can slides down your throat, but thick (unlike the usual thin kind). The Gravy is not saltish, so light yet so good. Ordered around 6 of this!

4.5 Chiong Fan / 5.0 Chiong Fan

Glutinous Rice with Chicken

The Glutinous rice wraps a very generous amount of chicken meat, chinese sausages. It is steamed to perfection, not too dry. The Rice is very fragrant with the aroma of the Pandan leaves.

4.5 Glutinous Rice / 5.0 Glutinous Rice

Spare Ribs

Taste very normal, nothing special, but its nice nevertheless.

3.7 Ribs / 5.0 Ribs

XO sauce Carrot Cake
The Carrot cake is so soft yet quite chewy. Each bite has a pretty strong taste of carrots. we ordered like 5 of these! Good Stuff!
4.6 Carrot / 5.0 Carrots

Fried Wantons

I never tried this, cos its fried and looks normal to me. But from what i heard from the rest, they say its good. I should think its good. Go try to find out! :)

Siew Mais

I think the Siew Mais are pretty normal, the small size type. Nicer than NTUC and many of those Buffet Siew Mais, but its certainly not the best ive eaten. But i have to say, its above average la...

4.0 Siews / 5.0 mais

Fried Spring Rolls

Usually i don't like spring rolls, because they are deep fried, and they taste pretty much the same. I had the first bite, and oh my! Its crispy to the right amount on the outside, and the fillings in the inside was so tasty! I cannot really tell whats inside, but BIG juicy prawn was found inside again! My 2nd bite I dipped it with the specially prepared vinegar, and it now taste even better! So i had my 3rd, 4th 5th..yadayada.... and up up those calories!

4.6 Spring / 5.0 Rolls

Chicken Feet

The chicken feet is simmered in a very nice sauce with Tau Pok. Those who do not dare to eat the Chicken Feet for fear of those "feets" can eat the Tau Pok underneath it! The Tau Pok is very yummy after sponging up the sauce. For those who dare to eat feets, lucky you, the feet is cooked so well that the skin detaches away from the bone so easliy, and the sauce has already simmered into the skin.. yums... we had about 4 or 5 of these!

4.3 chicken feets / 5.0 Chicken feets

Har Gow

My Favourite dish of all! Each Har Gow envelopes 3 of those BIG JUICY Prawns! So each Bite gives you 3 bursts of Prawn "juice". Ahh... this is heavenly! DIE DIE MUST EAT and MUST EAT ALOT!

4.8 Har Gow / 5.0 Har Gows

Beancurd Skin wrapped (forgot the name)

This is pretty ok for me..but the rest likes it. Dipped into the special sauce for best effect!

4.0 / 5.0

Some dumpling (forgot the name again)

Well, we ordered only one of this, and this is the first and last. Nothing worth mentioning, a lot of meat fillings inside, but nothing great, and those who ate it agrees too!

3.0 / 5.0

Char Siew Bao

I never eat this cos its just char siew bao. No one mentioned that its good, so once again, i guess its just normal.

Ritter Sports

Ritter Sport Cappiccino & Marzipan

The reason this chocolate is called Ritter Sport, indeed has something to do with Sport! Ok..the story goes like this... Alfred Ritter married Clara, so thats why the "Ritter". They wanted to produce a Squarish chocolate, but yet weighs the same as Rectangular ones, and must be able to fit into Sport's Jacket Pocket, and thats how we get the "Sport". Combined them together and we get "Ritter Sport"! Im not making this up!

Hope the cappucino is good, and anyway got them from NUS co-op, so cheap... only $2.20! Usual price $2.70! hehe... Taka sells 4 for $10! I got a good deal! anyway just realised from my friend that Cold Storage is also selling at $2.20. =

Wanton Mee Soup vs Wanton Mee Dry

http://www.nutrition.com.sg/do/hnoodle.asp

Here's a simple trick to choosing the right food. The trick is "always choose soupy stuffs over the dry version."

As you can see from the table above, both are wanton mees, just that one is dry and the other soup. The Dry contains 8 more grams of fats compare to the soup one!!! Even though the serving weight for the soup wanton mee is higher (410g), probably due to the weight of soup.

Next time when you order a bowl or Dry Wanton Mee, observe what goes into the bowl. Lard! Sesame Oil. Onion Oil. Oyster Sauce! all the different lipids into the bowl and eventually into YOU!! Taste-wise, how big a difference can it get? Even if the dry one taste better...does it worth that extra 8g of fats?!! It could be more if the uncle decides to use more lard.

Worse still... Singaporeans actually eat Wanton Mee for Breakfast... =\ Wake up! Its morning breakfast!

Break-y at The Coffee Bean

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaves
I think that TCB & TL has done a wonderful job, by making their breakfast available all-day! I always wanted to eat their breakfast, but i am those kind who likes to make my own breakfast at home, so seldom have chance to eat breakfast outside! But since their breakfast is now all-day! It means that i can get to eat their breakfast as my lunch! haha!
The Tea - Free Flow before 11am

The Black Coffee or Kopi-o siu dai

Salmon with Egg sandwich (im sure this is not the right name...i cant rmb!)

This is damn good la, thick and quite fresh salmon fillings between the bread, and sunny side up in the hollow of the bread! Perfect Combi! The cranberry Salad that comes along with makes my day, a good one! :)

Egg Ben (the right name)

Above the layer of bread, is scrambled eggs with cheese and ham topped with slight dash of herbs, and some pepper to go along with it will be good. Its quite salty already due to the cheese and ham, so be wary, do not add the salt that was given! Cranberry salad to go along too!

More Breakfast!!!

anyway just rmb something, LJS breakfast is a big NONO!

more piglets to usher "mid-autumn"!

One Pig, 2 piglets, 2 Goldfish aka me, 1 merlion!
Suddenly i just feel like eating these for lectures everyday! haha. Bought from "Bee Cheng Hiang"! Warning! (dun ever buy from normal bakeries, their Piglets are so hard, majiam chewing pebbles!) The auntie selling is was like: "Buy fish good ah... "nian nian you yu".. and i showed her the = face. But in the end, i bought it still...lol. I want "nian nian you CAP 5.0" la... who cares bout fish man...
Anyway, was surfing for the nutritional values of this piglets but up to no avail, until i bought one with the nutritional info label.
For those Health freakies out there: One Normal size Piglet of 25g contains 5g carbs, 4g Fats, 1g Protein, thats about 50Kcal! Rather high in fats for something so small... but eat in moderation lor...

Piglet-in-a-basket

Some call it piglet-in-a-basket, some call it piglet bisuit. But its actually called "jui zai beng" (豬仔餅) in Cantonese. So much attention is given to mooncakes, but this poor piglet is left more and more neglected over the years... Mooncakes contains so much calories ~ 1000Kcal for one piece of Traditional Mooncake with lotus paste, so why not celebrate with this sweet biscuit!? :) and it cost only $1.00 at Bee Cheng Hiang!

The pastry is atually similar to that of the tradtional cantonese mooncake, minus away the lotus paste. But recently, new piglets are out in the market which contains lotus paste or even chocolate! Theres also Merlions now, fish... wonder if theres Disney Cartoon Characters...

If you haven't had yours today, go get it now! relieve those childhood days!

In Chinese, its called Dan Song Shao Bing. This gotta be my favourite!!! Can some kind soul please tell me if this ting is deep fried, or toasted?

Soya Bean Curd ($1.60)

How can anyone not eat beancurd over here?! I think its better than the one at Selegie, less sweet, with more goodness of soyabean taste!

"Xiao Long Bao" (around $3+)

Although they are known for their Soya Products, This less known XLB is actually very good for the price you are paying...

QQ mian (noodles)

QQ Noodle House

QQ noodle house, as the name suggested, the noodles are QQ. QQ means kinda like chewy, not lumped in a mess. Its usually very crowded on weekdays, but i went on N'day, meaning no need to Q at QQ house!

Whats on their menu?

I ordered "6" - "martell chicken broth"

"Martell Chicken Broth Noodle"

The first sip of the soup has a very rich "Martell taste, but the more you drink, you sort of gets immuned to the martell taste, and eventually your tastebuds just cant taste anymore of the martell. But still, the chicken broth is very rich in flavor. And how can i not to mention, the Noodles are so QQ! Theres also 3 pieces of Chicken along with it and of cos my favourite EGG! But too bad, the egg was looks quite bad on the picture, but an egg still taste like an egg no matter how it looks like larh!

Thumbsup for the Broth and the QQ noodles!

Soya Milk vs Cows' Mlik

Found the 2 healthiest Milk of each category (let me know if there's better choices out there!)
: Cow and Soya! Healthy in the context that it has the highest protein per 100ml, lowest sugar, and low fat, and low in calories.

The winner for Cows' Milk is none other than HL fresh Milk (Plain),

and for the Soya category is the new NutriSoy Omega Soya Milk (No Sugar Added).

HL Milk (Plain)

50 kcal
5g Protein
1g Fat
5.3g Carbs per 100ml

NutriSoy Omega No SugarAdded Soya Milk

39kcal
4g Protein
1.8 Fats
1.8 Carbs

With all these healthier alternatives, sometimes i just wonder how come consumers do not want to switch to these healthier choices rather than those loaded with plenty of fats and sugar? Why not just spend some time and effort to look at the nutritional information before making your purchase. They are there for a reason! But many people still choose based on which taste the best, which one is the cheapest... Price wise its just a few cents more expensive, so it shouldn't be an issue. A simple decision like this will save you from consuming
unecessary fats and sugar, save yourself from running an extra mile, or another 30min in the gym.

SO folks! Not only should you eat responsibly, you should buy responsibly too!
