I think what makes games and movies / shows so captivating is cos of the instantaneous feedback and instant gratification that one derives from it.
The laughter, the emotions, the relaxation are the most direct form of deemed advantages gained from these interactive media and animation.
Yet, if only one is able to look past one's greed, and reflect on the effects in the long run, you'll realize that you're on the shorter end of the stick despite all the "deemed gains". Time "wasted" could be better spent -- studies, voluntary work, studying Buddhism etc. These don't offer instantaneous gratification, some don't even offer feedback decades down the road. But if we know our final goal and destination and keep that in mind, that is what which will keep us going despite the tough ride and seemingly no advantages or merits earned.
It's not easy to remove oneself from all these distractions, but at least try.
And plant that little seed of goodness a little at a time.
