It's quite sad to see young girls nowadays don't appreciate crafts.
We were teaching them friendship bands, and many
complained commented "Where did you learn all these? (myself) When did you learn? (Secondary school days) Wow. Your must have nothing better to do and do all these."
So disheartening.
Till today, I still love doing these little crafts, friendship band, cross stitch etc. Among all these, I don't really like sewing, but sewing once in a while is therapeutic. hahaha. Healing in those moments of concentration. =)
But during one of my lessons to teach the use of "sequential words", I taught them origami. 14-year-old boys, and they love it. Haha. (of course, no books is always better for them, hah)
At least I feel... at least they appreciate. Some would even offer to teach you another origami that you haven't learnt before.
I've never forgotten that I've learnt my first origami from my grandmother when I was in kindergarten. With just a few folds, she performed magic and transformed newspaper into something else. Then, you felt as though you had all the toys in the world, and you can simply spend hours playing masak with these folded paper or even hours just perfecting and memorizing the steps to fold them. She taught me how to fold a ball, crane, crane on a boat, boat etc, just to name a few. Of course you could simply argue you can learn anything and almost everything from Y*utube (and of course Guide Books) nowadays, but having someone to teach you such little simple things beats the accessibility of these Guides, as the fun is in the learning and spending time with the other person.
Till today at her age of 80+, she still can remember new things/crafts which I've yet to learn from her. One regret I have is not being able to master knitting because it ain't easy, and this country ain't really practical to take up this craftwork unless you travel to cold climate frequently. She can simply knit a jacket just from balls of yarn, and even create patterns in the knitwork. How genius is that?? No books, no notes, no videos, no nothing. Simply from memory, through learning from her elders.
Note to self: If I have any children and eventually grandchildren in future, I will make sure that they learn some basic crafts, and to appreciate the beauty in the simplicity of these crafts. Origami, knots, beads painting etc. Or even using fruits/vegetable, paper from hole punching or recycled materials to create art pieces.
