Higashino Keigo's mysteries
There is something about 东野圭吾 Higashino Keigo's mysteries that always left me craving for something more in humanity.
I would say that, in this entire novel, he detailed the heinous crimes and wrongdoings of the antagonist explicitly. Yet his verdict and final stroke on sculpting the antagonist never fails to evoke compassion towards the obvious bad guy. We are left with disturbing emotions, which then force us to reexamine our label on the bad guy, whom we find that they are merely victims in life who unfortunately took the wrong path, or was led down the wrong path, or in the wrong circumstances. Their remorse, their guilt, their faith and belief in love and love for their loved ones, these are laid out in good view for your scrutiny and judgment.
In contrast, he shed some light on the not-so-glamourous side of the good guys/victims and we see flawed heroes/victims. Then you really think hard -- are they really the good guys/victims? are they really the bad guys?
I just read his novel Utsukushiki Kyouki 美丽的凶器 (美しき凶器) recently. The description of crime is boring, you know where the description ends (though you wouldn't know the twist in the story). The juxtaposition of three parallel storylines are slightly disjointed (yet the whole is the sum of the parts). His touch on anatagonist's feelings is minimal. There are reasons for this -- the character of the antagonist tends to be aloof, robotic and unfeeling. Perhaps that is why I didn't really like it. However, the final few paragraphs of the novel changed my entire perspective towards the antagonist (and even my perception towards the novel's readability). At that moment, you realized the unsaid, unspeakable, inexpressible feelings of the antagonist is the last missing piece of jigsaw. It's as though you read the entire novel, just to reach that last few conclusive lines of the novel. All for that enlightening and perception-changing moment.
[Spoiler: She was a unknowing puppet that was controlled by the doctor, who unscrupulously made her conceive time and again, just to take advantage of the developing cells during pregnancy with addition of medicine to develop super-human bodies and muscles. As a side effect of the medicine, a miscarriage is inevitable at the third month. Despite not delving much into her feelings and emotions throughout the novel, you finally realize that she has feelings even when she killed without battling an eyelid. At that moment when she hunted down her final prey for her revenge stint, she showed her weakness -- emotions -- when she saw a pregnant woman. The only words that were muttered before she was gunned down, were "Ba--by."]
The people who mistook evil for good, the good who took on evil for various motives.. how do you even know that you define someone well enough? Do you know a person well enough to determine if they are good or bad, more good than bad, or more bad than good, or bad with a little good etc? What role does circumstances play out in these scenario? Would things have been different from that turning point if another scenario happened? The infinite possibilities, all sprung up from that little voice at the back of your head (起心动念), which could lead you down to where you will land yourself in in future.
I am glad to have such mind provoking novels to read, where you read not just for the storyline, but to reflect on issues. (Similar to this novel would be 盛夏的方程式 (真夏の方程式) / 嫌疑犯X的献身(容疑者Xの献身), which were made into movies!)
So long to trashy blogs.
Sidenote: In fact, his portrayal of characters are just how I love the badass guys in various shows and anime, who show twinge of kindness (Tyki Mikk and Sebastian, my two favourite flawed-bad-guys, haha. Incidentally, both seiyuus are cast in Hanasakeru Seishonen. Whee. =) )

Fervently writing and scrunching up my To-Do listS lately. At least thrice day, it has become a fetish.
Not as though there's any changes to it, but I seemed to keep reminding myself that there are things to be done. MANY.
Now to limit it to one list. ONE.

For a change, I was watching Underc*ver B*ss USA episodes 1 and 2, and it sort of resonated with what my friend had said ages ago. Really knowing what all your staff is doing through the bottom-up approach, and most importantly, not to forget how you've had been one of the bottom-ground staff, how it was to be one and how you've slowly gotten to where you are today. (Though to be honest, one of the bosses took over parents' company and the other bought over a company without working from the roots, so not exactly what I am saying here)
I like the humane side of how some of the underc*ver bosses dealt with the problem, and they take the problem with a proactive approach instead of reprimanding and pointing a finger at what's wrong. Furthermore, I admire their grace and fortitude in taking these complaints right smacked in their face.
There are indeed so many things we can learn from others.
