THIRD-YEAR chemistry undergraduate Randall Tan, 23, will be mixing more than chemicals soon - he will be mixing tunes for the rest of the students at his university.
MAKING WAVES ONLINE: NUS students (from left) Lotus-lee Chin, Nicole Chia, Randall Tan and 27 others in the Students' DJ Group will be running the online station, Radio Pulze.

Mr Tan is one of the 30 students at the National University of Singapore (NUS) who will be running Radio Pulze - the first tertiary online radio station not headed by communication studies students.

Broadcasts, set to start next May, will be live over the Internet, and students logging on to computers on campus will have direct access through an icon which will appear on their screens.
The university's Students' DJ Group, which will run the station, plans to have programmes during lunch breaks from 11.30am to 2.00pm.

Said Mr Tan, 23, president of the group: 'It seems like a small timeframe, but we're all undergraduate students and we want to gauge the response from students before we venture into bigger things.'

They plan to branch out to dedication programmes during special occasions like Valentine's Day, interview local bands and interact with their listeners through talk shows focusing on NUS issues.

About 10 students will work as deejays while the rest will source for advertisers, market the station and arrange for deejays to appear at other school gigs.
The cost of starting up the station, which includes buying equipment and possibly also building a place to house the station, is estimated to be between $100,000 and $200,000.
Currently, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have campus radio stations.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic started the first campus radio station - Radio Heatwave - in 1992. It is headed by its final-year mass communication students at the school of film and media studies.
NTU's online Fusion Radio is run by students from the school of communication and information.
Said Mr Tan: 'It's going to be quite a challenge since most of us don't have any background in communications or deejaying.
'But with our passion for music, hard work and the school's support, I think we'll do okay.'

So...gonna throw in the towel~ yeah...my studies gonna affect it's timetable as well~ so y nt~ yeah..

REFLECTION ON TERM VACATION

mmm...this term vacation is 1 of the most fullfilling vacation i ever had! haha, had a great time meeting new frenx in school & external events, and catching up with my old frenx....yeah... had fun events like the nyp-pal camp, and the VSA camp...really enjoyable and enriching

hope the new semester will bring abt more happening stuffs and hopefully, better results! haha especially camp crazy and camp eagle! hope to run for the OGL thingy man~ but the NYP openhouse thingy aleady giving headache liao... due to divided loyalty...haix~

yeah...and 1 more thing...NYP at night very shiok...cold + errie to a certain xtend.... the CCTV in the elevator showing you the inside of it, of which is display on a TV outside...is kinda creepy...yeah... 2 of my fellow counsellors fm NUS, in a camp held in NYP, said that...the view is kinda creepy..dunno y...haha...frankly..i feel pretty weird too, mayb u pple got time can try int he middle of the night stay over at nyp and check it out...and SIT, SCL, SEG at night is so damn bloody errie! and it's Sooooooooooo shiok to bathe alone at 2am over there hahaha!

during the VSA camp, was told by bryan abt this 2 upcoming by S.I.T, he's 1 of the committee dudes you see...1 is camp crazy, 1 is camp eagle... camp crazy suppose to be on the school break, and is a sort of fun camp, and gear us up for camp eagle...camp eagle is an OGL camp...heard is very tough both mentally and physically~ thought the mental part more siong~ anyway, i m GAME for it~!

Yup, back fm camp, let's it begin~!

Day 1

Mmmm..... walk fm my usual route fm amk interchange to nyp blk E...raining sia..that time i still kana fever... den by the time got there... only saw vincent, 1 of the volunteer management committee... den he told me go walk ard~ den come back lor~ LOL well...anyway.. den everybody come liao..kk... saw bryan, at least some1 to tok 2 for the rest of de camp...

met my grp members, randall (group leader), xin yun and sheena...well.. during the ice-breaker, sabastiin n xing er join us, sabastian is logistic crew, xing er is de photographer...they r nt part of de the counsellor team, but they join us anyway...althought during the entire stay in camp, xing er was sticking to out grp...cox she click with de gals mah...den somemore she dunno any1...

den played this disability board game...is a game that not only provide us with enjoyment, but to get us to know various medical condition, objectives of the camp and troubleshooting for the camp, thru a game like monopoly.

anyway, got this gal that look like this HK actress call li shan shan, lol, always smile sheepily at me : ) hahahahhahaha kk fine fine fine, den did campus tour, ok fine...as if i nv been to nyp b4... oh btw...damn...my fellow camp counsellors most are university student lor! like so alien...randall is NUS's sci faculty, xin er is NUS's Arts faculty, xin yun is NUS's Design faculty... sheena is SMU de... wah..stress hahahah

den we got briefing on our campers, their medical condition etc, and our events briefs etc..... my campers under my grp include kids with down syndrome, global delay, hyperactive disorder, depression, deaf and mild intellectual...well...all of us r 1st timers dealing with the disabled..only our leader is experienced... sheena even feel that the conditions r intimidating at times...but well...that doesn't stop her fm doing her job... read abt that later ya? hahax.. we had to chorograph some action for the song " Oh Suzanne"? the kid song la...had a tough time.. we all unimaginative de la haha.. wah seh.. 1st time bathe at NYP...nt bad... no heater...oso.. tips ar..if 1 2 bath, go to the 1 inside the stadium...cox the showerhead better than the 1 beside the swimming pool. Althought the 1 beside the swimming pool got a "table" inside whic's quite useful.

had a rather bad time sleeping on 1st night...new to the enviroment..hard floor..etc...so hen xing ku... but by 4am, after 4+ hrs of testing different sleeping methods ^_^ haha, finally got "THE" position! haha sleep till 6+ , woke up... den i saw li xia, lanky, white face, bush-liked hair covering part of her face..i was like 0_o... can u tied ur hair? which i remind her for 4 days haha, duh -_-"

Day 2

then we prepared ourselves....and await the parents and campers..while they look nice... haha.. the gal with global delay, lynn...was attach to sheena..she was oso like Oww... and sheena really took it upon herself to take care of lynn... kinda touching ya... den we did quiling, wheat straw pictures and a mini chinese kite session... after that is dance, stained glass painting, T-shirt dying and international games...den after that..sing along... den SLEEP haha.. 1st night damn drama sia... 1 of the kana a fit...and was like need to have 3-5 guys to subdude him... heard he was sent home, cox he dun really listen to the instructions too...well...wat 2 do...that got this big-sized guy... who got autism and hyperactive disorder ( sry to say, but what a weird combination..) was almost fighting with bryan...took him, willie and roy to subdude him... another 1 is a guy...always trying to run away...bryan revoke his old injury by changing him, while chasing him myself, almost twist my right ankle sia..haha.. well...2nd night better to sleep liao...

then after guarding the bloody door for an hr or so....c pple playing with card outside! KNN BO JIO! so go c c...orh...yuan lai is our resident magician, Tom playing ard....i m impress... when he say those tricks r just intermediate beginner, at most is advance beginner nia... we were like

Day 3

woke at almost 7....some campers aleady woke up le... did more further dance, mosaic box and Guatemalan Weaving...den after lunch went OUTING! bought the kids to de history museum beside singapore river...i think the old 1 renovation...then this "new" history museum is like jux abt singapore river...so...yup...after that..we went for a ride on singapore river on the tourist bumboat...frankly hor...this 1 my 1st time sailing on singapore river itself in a bumboat! Lol..me so mountain tortise...last time nearest is only upto the mouth of s'pore river in a dragon boat nia...went back nyp...let the kids bath...dinner... play alittle bit..song n dances...

most of them slept like log after that...phew~ then, went out watch tom play some magic tricks agian... den abt 5 of us counsellors tok abt...if our kids were to have down syndrome...will we let them come to earth?...... this female counsellor ( who got best disclipinary award, cox she's very very firm with the kids) she say starting she would jux abort...if she got a kid wit DS...but after this...she got a mixed feeling... for Tom, he would not allow a child with DS to suffer in society, for me and bao jin ...we feel that... they should be given a chance, the life is their's we do not have the right to give them the death penalty....we bring them to this world, we have the responsibility of bring them up, watever their aliments *oWww... touching*

den...marina, came surf us with fruits... great logistic crew ya... ( she got best kitchew crew afterthat ^_^ )

den off we went to sleep.....best night to sleep man...i shut my eyes at 2am, open aleady 6am LOl FAST!

Day 4 ( FINAL !!)

Oww..last day.. anyway...as usual dance, den do some tin art, den some spray painting.. den...got this straits times journalist...ar... interview me and this disabled guy...take picture! *looking out for it in strait times* Lol anyway... den after lunch...we had a rehearsal on the performance tonight...! damn! it's final! we had to dance and to the bloody song thingy... yup! me and randall performing.... xin yun and sheena only coming in for the bloody song thiny...yep, 6 grp, togerther perform 3 items, we did the 2nd item...togther with grp 3, ( i m in grp 4~) den after that a short speech..and PRIZE PRESENTATION! although we got consolation...but...we sweep award 6 awards last night!

after that we hang out with the kids and their parents...damn it man! almost cry while chatting with a kid's parent...so touching...we jux hang over there for 30mins... for the parents and kids to go home after their dinner reception...we were like so... : ( the campers say they wanna come join agian nxt yr...while...they ask us coming back anot...but...i dunno..mux c if student affair calling me anot...but anyway.. i ask some of them to keep a lookout..nxt yr i wanna join if got such lobang... den counsellors starts to leave, logistic crews still have to pack the stuffs and bring back to VSA HQ in bedok... wah seh.. peifu u pple... counsellors as long de parents and children leave, we can go le...haha den the gals wait for me while i packup...den bid farewell to the the other volunteers...mmm... may and xin er bunking sheena's dad car home... they all live in the west mah... den me and xin yun walk 2gether to yck, she lives in boon keng mrt there~

Learn alot of things in this camp. It's my 1st camp and in-depth interaction with the physical n mentally disabled...it's really no mean feat to take care of them, but... they are just like us normal human, jux that they are a little slower in responding, they might have problem expressing...but, i m damn sure they know how u treat them and certainly feel the same emotion we normal being feel too. The smile, the sense of appreication u get from them and their parents is a feeling money can't buy. We as normal being, should not be deter by minor problems like, not enough money to buy ur favourite mp player, ur regular hair treatment, or that latest concert tix for ur favourite artists or even worry abt poor school results or a trifle with friend or family... these problems are minor as oppose to theirs. This camp is really an eye opener for me. To better appreciate yourself and ur environment, and do ur part for the less fortunate, be a Volunteer.

Well...this is it...tml have to go for camp liao... is call this "Very Special Arts Camp" ... held at nyp de... it's a camp foo special children...ya know...down syndrome etc...frankly...i only know the minimum bare info on this camp...i dun even know who those campers exactly are etc.. only got job scope, shedule and to-bring list, oh ya...suppose to be a camp counsellor there~ haha.. anyway..is student affairs de thingy la...i know that 1 of my nyp-pal senoirs, bryan going too....well, at least some1 i know...(though nt a gal :X) anyway suppose to report at BLK E, SDC, lvl 3 de openspace there.... at 2.30pm..1st day is get to know the fellow volunteers etc... day 2, 3 n 4 is the REAL CAMP... so is fm 6-9 dec...oh man...no TV..no INTERNET! guess i will smuggle my hp in....and yeah...i m serious abt this...haha..gonna smuggle it in... *though i m seriously warn against bringing electronic gadgets in..., well... *shugs shoulder* we will see abt it ya.

den found this thingy call wikipedia.com last wk... very nice webbie... u can get alot of info fm there... fmmeaning of words...to information on country, to events like world war 2... very informative... a mux go for all you net-centric dudes~ and an excellent place for me to keep myself occupy, spent a great deal of time writing articles and alterating exsisting articles for wikipedia.com . But my related topic very limited haha..i only focuson 2 topic, ' Military Science & Technology ' and ' Singapore ' and some other blank link along the way..if i know my stuff, will just write an article on them~
