ocd

over the weekend, i went for my "abnormal psychology" lecture. it was really interesting cause we got to know the various types of disorders and a more introspective look into them, the causes, symptoms and even how it affects a person's life.

on the 2nd day of lecture, we watched a video abt OCD, obsessive compulsion disorder, which is characterized by a person doing something repeatedly or having certain thoughts pertaining to a specific behaviour, such as the feeling of being unclean and a compulsive act of washing your hands over and over again till you're satisfied that your hands are clean.

the video "The House of Obsessive Compulsives", was a reality programme in which a psychologist attempts to improve the lives of 3 individuals who suffer from various types of OCD. there was a middle aged lady, wendy, who had not touched anyone for 5 years and uses gloves or tissues to hold objects. she was paranoid over dirt and had a fear of glitter or any shiny metallic objects.

there was a young woman named sophie who was paranoid over dirt too and constantly kept washing her hands. her bedtime ritual of washing up would take as long as 3 hours.

and then there was a man called gerard who was afraid of touching pens and papers cause he might write a false confession to a crime that he never did.

so these 3 individuals were put in a house in london and went through consultations with the professor and tried to overcome their fears, to live a normal life. now to most of us, it would be weird why a person was afraid of a little dirt or why a person is a clean-freak, but to these individuals, it was a daily hassle, constricting their routines, altering them and posing a challenge everyday. it seemed like such a pain to live with, especially when they showed wendy's husband, david, who was so patient with his wife, checking the clothes or an object to see if they were clean, doing the household chores and putting up with his wife's often-strange requests and yeah, the lack of love, or rather physical love. however, by meeting wendy's demands, he actually reaffirmed her obsessive compulsiveness and wasn't helpful in trying to overcome it.

to cut the story short, the individuals eventually get better, better in the sense that they were not very paranoid over their quirky fears, they were able to live in a rather normal way, just like any of us. the re-occurence of their OCD is always there. you can never be completely rid of it. you just keep it under wraps, through proper treatment, more of facing your fear instead of just depending on pills.

be it bipolar disorder, OCD, agoraphobia, tourette, even bulimia and anorexia; individuals suffering from them do not likely think the same way as a normal person does. and by saying "normal", i would mean a person whose thoughts and actions are in sync with his or her society, accepted by societal norms. rather than laughing or ostracizing them, we should help them to improve their condition.

failing to conform to societal norms might get you labelled as abnormal. hmm..

could it be justified? nahh..

cheating. can it be justified? let's say, you're in a monogamous relationship, and you cheat on your partner (you could be married or just in a relationship). Why would you cheat?

1. You're unhappy with your partner for various reasons.
2. You want to end the relationship but don't know how to broach the topic.
3. You're in a relationship where your partner and you do not feel the same way about each other, eg; there's no more love, passion or you're simply bored. which bring us back to option2, where you look to end the relationship.
4. You could be in an abusive relationship, resulting in looking for love outside your relationship.
5. You cheat with someone just to get back at your partner, due to some disputes or angry feelings directed towards him/her.
6. You're feeling insecure. You think your partner would not be able to stay committed to you, so you cheat before he/she cheats on you. (the human mind works wonders, tsktsk.)

SO, you cheat, you got busted. You're in deep shit. You wanna make amends, (well, sorry's not gonna help much now.) Let's see what could be running through your partner's mind;

1. Would you accept someone who has cheated on you?
2. By apologising profusely and making up in other ways, sufficient to accept the apology?
3. Can you trust your partner again?
4. Wait, is he/she still your partner after what he/she did?
5. Do you keep thinking of what YOU did to drive your partner to cheat on you?

there are many reasons why people cheat and for most of the times, i doubt it is justifiable.
it's a breach of trust. even if you are in an abusive or unhappy relationship, call it off before you go gallivanting behind your partner's back. save all the hurt and anger.
